| 2 | Mycoplasma infections and different human carcinomas显示文摘AIM To explore relationships between human carcinomas and mycoplasma infection.METHODS Monoclonal antibody PD4, which specifically recognizes a distinct protein from mycoplasma hyorhinis, was used to detect mycoplasma infection in different paraffinembedded carcinoma tissues with immunohistochemistry. PCR was applied to amplify the mycoplasma DNA from the positive samples for confirming immunohistochemistry.RESULTS Fifty of 90 cases (56%) of gastric carcinoma were positive for mycoplasma hyorhinis. In other gastric diseases, the mycoplasma infection ratio was 28% (18/49) in chronic superficial gastritis, 30% (14/ 46) in gastric ulcer and 37% (18/ 49) in intestinal metaplasia. The difference is significant with gastric cancer (X2=12.06, P<0.05). In colon carcinoma, the mycoplasma infection ratio was 55.1% (32/58), but it was 20.9% (10/49) in adenomarous polyp (X2=13.46, P<0.005).Gastric and colon cancers with high differentiation had a higher mycoplasma infection ratio than those with low differentiation (P< 0.05). Mycoplasma infection in esophageal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer and glioma was 50.9% (27/53), 52.6% (31/ 59), 39.7%(25/63) and 41% (38/91), respectively. The mycoplasma DNA was successfully amplified with the DNA extracted from the cancer tissues that were positive for mycoplasma infection (detected with antibody PD4).CONCLUSION There was high correlation between mycoplasma infection and different cancers, which suggests the possibility of an association between the two. | 5 | Effects of quaternary ammonium chain length on the antibacterial and remineralizing effects of a calcium phosphate nanocomposite显示文摘Composites containing nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate(NACP)remineralize tooth lesions and inhibit caries.A recent study synthesized quaternary ammonium methacrylates(QAMs)with chain lengths(CLs)of 3–18 and determined their effects on a bonding agent.This study aimed to incorporate these QAMs into NACP nanocomposites for the first time to simultaneously endow the material with antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities and to investigate the effects of the CL on the mechanical and biofilm properties.Five QAMs were synthesized:DMAPM(CL3),DMAHM(CL6),DMADDM(CL12),DMAHDM(CL16),and DMAODM(CL18).Each QAM was incorporated into a composite containing 20%NACP and 50%glass fillers.A dental plaque microcosm biofilm model was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity.The flexural strength and elastic modulus of nanocomposites with QAMs matched those of a commercial control composite(n 5 6;P.0.1).Increasing the CL from 3 to 16 greatly enhanced the antibacterial activity of the NACP nanocomposite(P,0.05);further increasing the CL to 18 decreased the antibacterial potency.The NACP nanocomposite with a CL of 16 exhibited biofilm metabolic activity and acid production that were 10-fold lesser than those of the control composite.The NACP nanocomposite with a CL of 16 produced 2-log decreases in the colony-forming units(CFU)of total microorganisms,total streptococci,and mutans streptococci.In conclusion,QAMs with CLs of 3–18 were synthesized and incorporated into an NACP nanocomposite for the first time to simultaneously endow the material with antibacterial and remineralization capabilities.Increasing the CL reduced the metabolic activity and acid production of biofilms and caused a 2-log decrease in CFU without compromising the mechanical properties.Nanocomposites exhibiting strong anti-biofilm activity,remineralization effects,and mechanical properties are promising materials for tooth restorations that inhibit caries. | Ke Zhang Lei Cheng Michael D Weir Yu-Xing Bai Hockin HK Xu | 2016 | International Journal of Oral Science2016,8,1: | 13 |
| 6 | Influence of Garlic Intercropping or Active Emitted Volatiles in Releasers on Aphid and Related Beneficial in Wheat Fields in China显示文摘In order to develop biological control of aphids by a 'push-pull'approach, intercropping using repellent emitting plants was developed in different crop and associated plant models. Garlic is one of the potential plant that could be inserted in crops to decrease the pest occurrence in neighboring crop plots. In this study, field works were conducted in wheat fields in Langfang Experimental Station, Hebei Province in China from October 2009 to July 2010 during wheat developmental season. The effect of wheat intercropping with garlic but also the volatiles emission on the incidence of the English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae Fabricius (Homoptera: Aphididae) was assessed. Natural beneficial occurrence and global yields in two winter wheat varieties that were susceptible or resistant to cereal aphid were also determined comparing to control plots without the use of garlic plant intercrop nor semiochemical releaser in the fields. S. avenae was found to be lower in garlic oil blend treatment (GOB), diallyl disulfide treatment (DD) and wheat-garlic intercropping treatment (WGI) when compared to the control plots for both two varieties (P<0.01). Both intercropping and application of volatile chemicals emitted by garlic could improve the population densities of natural enemies of cereal aphid, including ladybeetles and mummified aphids. Ladybeetle population density in WGI, GOB and mummified aphids densities in WGI, DD were significantly higher than those in control fields for both two varieties (P<0.05). There were significant interactions between cultivars and treatments to the population densities of S. avenae. The 1 000-grain weight and yield of wheat were also increased compared to the control. | 8 | One-year water-ageing of calcium phosphate composite containing nano-silver and quaternary ammonium to inhibit biofilms显示文摘Dental composites are commonly used restorative materials; however, secondary caries due to bio?lm acids remains a major problem. The objectives of this study were(1) to develop a composite containing quaternary ammonium dimethacrylate(QADM),nanoparticles of silver(NAg), and nanoparticles of amorphous calcium phosphate(NACP), and(2) to conduct the ?rst investigation of the mechanical properties, bio?lm response and acid production vs water-ageing time from 1 day to 12 months.A 4 × 5 design was utilized, with four composites(NACP-QADM composite, NACP-NAg composite, NACP-QADM-NAg composite,and a commercial control composite), and ?ve water-ageing time periods(1 day, and 3, 6, 9, and 12 months). After each waterageing period, the mechanical properties of the resins were measured in a three-point ?exure, and antibacterial properties were tested via a dental plaque bio?lm model using human saliva as an inoculum. After 12 months of water-ageing, NACP-QADMNAg had a ?exural strength and elastic modulus matching those of the commercial control(P40.1). Incorporation of QADM or NAg into the NACP composite greatly reduced bio?lm viability, metabolic activity and acid production. A composite containing both QADM and NAg possessed a stronger antibacterial capability than one with QADM or NAg alone(Po0.05). The anti-bio?lm activity was maintained after 12 months of water-ageing and showed no signi?cant decrease with increasing time(P40.1). In conclusion, the NACP-QADM-NAg composite decreased bio?lm viability and lactic acid production, while matching the loadbearing capability of a commercial composite. | 9 | Genetic Variation Among the Geographic Population of the Grain Aphid, Sitobion avenae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in China Inferred from Mitochondrial COI Gene Sequence显示文摘In order to characterize the genetic relationship of the geographic populations of Sitobion avenae (Hemiptera: Aphididae) in China, a 588 bp region of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (mtDNA-COI) gene was sequenced and analyzed among the different geographic populations. 269 individuals were collected from 17 localities in different wheat-growing areas in China that covered most of the range reported for this species. Within the sequence among these geographic populations, 15 polymorphic sites defined 16 distinct haplotypes, ranging in sequence divergence from 0.2% (one nucleotide) to 1.7% (10 nucleotides). Of the 15 variable sites, 12 were transitional substitutions, 2 were transversional substitutions and 1 was transitional and transversional substitution. Phylogenetic analysis showed that all haplotypes were highly interconnected with each other, in absence of phylogeographic structing. Each of 8 haplotypes was found only at one locality, and the other haplotypes were the widespread distributed in the different localities. The higher genetic diversity was found in the northern China populations than that in the southern China populations. | 10 | Interactions between CagA and smoking in gastric cancer显示文摘AIM: To examine the interactions between cytotoxinassociated gene (CagA) positive Helicobacter pylori infection and smoking in non-cardiac gastric cancer.METHODS: A case-control study (257 cases and 514 frequency-matched controls) was conducted from September 2008 to July 2010 in Xi’an,China.Cases were newly diagnosed,histologically confirmed non-cardiac cancer.Controls were randomly selected from similar communities to the cases and were further matched by sex and age (± 5 years).A face-to-face interview was performed by the investigators for each participant.Data were obtained using a standardized questionnaire that included questions regarding known or suspected lifestyle and environmental risk factors of gastric cancer.A 5 mL sample of fasting venous blood was taken.CagA infection was serologically detected by enzymelinked immunosorbent assays.RESULTS: Smoking and CagA infection were statistically significant risk factors of non-cardiac cancer.CagA was categorized in tertiles,and the odds ratio (OR) was 12.4 (95% CI: 6.1-20.3,P = 0.003) for CagA after being adjusted for confounding factors when the highexposure category was compared with the low-exposure category.Smokers had an OR of 5.4 compared with subjects who never smoked (95% CI: 2.3-9.0,P = 0.002).The OR of non-cardiac cancer was 3.5 (95% CI: 1.8-5.3) for non-smokers with CagA infection,3.5 (95% CI: 1.9-5.1) for smokers without CagA infection,and 8.7 (95% CI: 5.1-11.9) for smokers with CagA infection compared with subjects without these risk factors.After adjusting for confounding factors,the corresponding ORs of non-cardiac cancer were 3.2 (95% CI: 1.5-6.8),2.7 (95% CI: 1.3-4.9) and 19.5 (95% CI: 10.3-42.2),respectively.There was a multiplicative interaction between smoking and CagA,with a synergistic factor of 2.257 (Z = 2.315,P = 0.021).CONCLUSION: These findings support a meaningful interaction between CagA and smoking for the risk of gastric cancer which may have implications for its early detection. | xiao-Qin wang Hong Yan Paul D Terry Jian-Sheng Wang Li Cheng Wen-An Wu Sen-Ke Hu | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,28: | 6 |
| 11 | Effects of disinhibition on spatiotemporal pattern of neuronal first recruitment in neuronal networks显示文摘The propagation of neuronal activities is a key feature to understanding information processing in networks. The analysis based on first-spikes of bursts in turn plays an important role in the research of neuronal activity propagation. Our focus here is to investigate how spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal first-spikes are affected by disinhibition. Multi-electrode arrays were used to record stimulation-evoked bursts of multiple neurons in randomly cultured neuronal networks. Both the precise timing of and the rank relationships between first-spikes were analyzed. Compared with evoked bursts in the network's native state, the precise first-spike latencies in its dis-inhibited state are more consistent and the propagation of its bursting activities is much faster. | 12 | Ultrashort Bessel beam photoinscription of Bragg grating waveguides and their application as temperature sensors显示文摘Ultrashort pulsed Bessel beams with intrinsic nondiffractive character and potential strong excitation confinement down to 100nm can show a series of advantages over Gaussian beams in fabricating efficient Bragg grating waveguides(BGWs).In this work, we focus on parameter management for the inscription of efficient BGWs using the point-by-point method employing Bessel beams.Due to their high aspect ratio, the resulting one-dimensional void-like structures can section the waveguides and interact efficiently with the optical modes. Effective first-order BGWs with low birefringence can then be fabricated in bulk fused silica. By controlling the size and the relative location of grating voids via the Bessel pulse energy and scan velocities, the resonant behaviors of BGWs can be well regulated.A high value of 34 dB for 8 mm length is achieved.A simple predictive model for BGWs is proposed for analyzing the influences of processing parameters on the performance of BGWs. | 14 | Effect of anti-biofilm glass–ionomer cement on Streptococcus mutans biofilms显示文摘Dental restorative materials with antimicrobial properties can inhibit bacterial colonization, which may result in a reduction of caries at tooth-filling interaction zones. This study aimed to develop antibacterial glass–ionomer cements(GIC) containing a quaternary ammonium monomer(dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate, DMADDM), and to investigate their effect on material performance and antibacterial properties. Different mass fractions(0, 1.1% and 2.2%) of DMADDM were incorporated into the GIC. The flexure strength, surface charge density, surface roughness and fluoride release were tested. A Streptococcus mutans biofilm model was used. Exopolysaccharides(EPS) staining was used to analyze the inhibitory effect of DMADDM on the biofilm matrix. In addition, biofilm metabolic activity, lactic acid metabolism and the expression of glucosyltransferase genes gtf B, gtf C and gtf D were measured. GIC containing 1.1% and 2.2% DMADDM had flexural strengths matching those of the commercial control(P40.1). DMADDM was able to increase the surface charge density but reduced surface roughness(Po0.05). The incorporation of 1.1% and 2.2% DMADDM elevated the release of fluoride by the GIC in the first 2 days(Po0.05). The novel DMADDM-modified GIC significantly reduced biofilm metabolic activity(Po0.05) and decreased lactic acid production(Po0.05). The quantitative polymerase chain reaction(q PCR) results showed that the expression of gtf B, gtf C and gtf D decreased when mass fractions of DMADDM increased(Po0.05). EPS staining showed that both the bacteria and EPS in biofilm decreased in the DMADDM groups. The incorporation of DMADDM could modify the properties of GIC to influence the development of S. mutans biofilms. In this study, we investigated the interface properties of antibacterial materials for the first time. | 17 | Primer containing dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate kills bacteria impregnated in human dentin blocks显示文摘Antibacterial dimethylaminododecyl methacrylate(DMADDM) was recently synthesized. The objectives of this study were to:(1)investigate antibacterial activity of DMADDM-containing primer on Streptococcus mutans impregnated into dentin blocks for the first time, and(2) compare the antibacterial efficacy of DMADDM with a previous quaternary ammonium dimethacrylate(QADM).Scotchbond Multi-Purpose(SBMP) bonding agent was used. DMADDM and QADM were mixed into SBMP primer. Six primers were tested: SBMP control primer P, P+2.5% DMADDM, P+5% DMADDM, P+7.5% DMADDM, P+10% DMADDM, and P+10% QADM.S. mutans were impregnated into human dentin blocks, and each primer was applied to dentin to test its ability to kill bacteria in dentinal tubules. Bacteria in dentin were collected via a sonication method, and the colony-forming units(CFU) and inhibition zones were measured. The bacterial inhibition zone of P+10% DMADDM was 10 times that of control primer(Po0.05). CFU in dentin with P+10% DMADDM was reduced by three orders of magnitude, compared with control. DMADDM had a much stronger antibacterial effect than QADM, and antibacterial efficacy increased with increasing DMADDM concentration. Dentin shear bond strengths were similar among all groups(P40.1). In conclusion, antibacterial DMADDM-containing primer was validated to kill bacteria inside dentin blocks, possessing a much stronger antibacterial potency than the previous QADM. DMADDM-containing bonding agent was effective in eradicating bacteria in dentin, and its efficacy was directly proportional to DMADDM mass fraction.
