| 1 | The cloud-microphysical cause of torrential rainfall amplification associated with Bilis(0604)显示文摘After its landfall in China's mainland in 2006, Typhoon Bilis brought about torrential rainfall amplification at the edge of Guangdong, Jiangxi, and Hunan provinces, causing severe disasters. From a cloud-microphysical perspective, we discuss the differences of cloud-microphysical processes before and during the precipitation amplification and possible causes of the rainfall amplification by using high-resolution simulation data. The results show that the cloud-microphysical characteristics during the above two periods are significantly different. With the distinct increase in the rainfall intensity, the cloud hydrometeor contents increase markedly, especially those of the ice-phase hydrometeors including ice, snow and graupel, contributing more to the surface rainfall. The clouds develop highly and vigorously. Comparisons of conversion rates of the cloud hydrometeors between the above two periods show that the distinct increases in the cloud water content caused by the distinct enhancement of the water vapor condensation rate contribute to the surface rainfall mainly in two ways. First, the rain water content increases significantly by accretion of cloud water by rain water, which thus contributes to the surface rainfall. Second, the accretion of cloud water by snow increases significantly the content of snow, which is then converted to graupel by accretion of snow by graupel. And then the graupel melts into rain water, which subsequently contributes to the surface rainfall amplification. | 3 | Identification and Characterization of Proteins Associated with Plant Tolerance to Heat Stress显示文摘Heat stress is a major abiotic stress limiting plant growth and productivity in many areas of the world. Understanding mechanisms of plant adaptation to heat stress would facilitate the development of heat-tolerant cultivars for improving productivity in warm climatic regions. Protein metabolism involving protein synthesis and degradation is one of the most sensitive processes to heat stress. Changes in the level and expression pattern of some proteins may play an important role in plant adaptation to heat stress. The identification of stress-responsive proteins and pathways has been facilitated by an increasing number of tools and resources, including two-dimensional electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, and the rapidly expanding nucleotide and amino acid sequence databases. Heat stress may induce or enhance protein expression or cause protein degradation. The induction of heat-responsive proteins, particularly heat shock proteins (HSPs), plays a key role in plant tolerance to heat stress. Protein degradation involving various proteases is also important in regulating plant responses to heat stress. | 4 | Soil Enzyme Activities under Agroforestry Systems in Northern Jiangsu Province显示文摘The authors presented the enzyme characteristics of catalase, sucrase, urease and alkaline phosphatase under agroforestry systems in northern Jiangsu Province. The results show that soil enzyme activities reduce gradually from top to bottom layer of the soil profile, and the fluctuations of catalase and urease are smaller than those of sucrase and alkaline phosphatase. Soil enzyme activities differe significantly in different samples, and the order is arranged as poplar-crop intercropping segment (A, D) > paulownia-crop intercropping segment (B, C) > CK. Furthermore, soil enzyme activities increase with intercropping age. On the other hand, in the same plot, there are closer relationships between enzymes in the soil samples. Catalase, alkaline phosphatase and urease are negatively related, while alkaline phosphatase and urease are positively related (except in samples B and C). In addition, the enzyme activities have a close relationship with the fertilizers. Catalase is positively correlated with the soil pH value (r = 0.854, 0.804, 0.078 and 0.082, respectively), and is negatively correlated with total N (r = –0.201, –0.529, –0.221 and –0.821, respectively), total P (r = –0.143, –0.213, –0.362 and –0.751, respectively) and available P (r = –0.339, –0.351, –0.576, and –0.676, respectively). Sucrase, urease and alkaline phosphatase are negatively correlated with the pH value, while positively correlated with the other fertilizers (r 1). | 5 | Reviewing the Technical Designs for Experiments with Ultraviolet-B Radiation and Impact on Photosynthesis,DNA and Secondary Metabolism显示文摘The ultraviolet-B(UV-B) portion of sunlight has received much attention in the last three decades,because radiation from this spectral region increases due to the stratospheric ozone depletion,which results from increases of chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere.Plant responses to UV-B exposure vary greatly and the interpretation of and comparison between studies is hindered,mainly by the contrasting experimental conditions used and interactive factors such as low light levels and possible artifacts due to the artificial experimental conditions.It seems likely that increases in solar UV-B radiation of the magnitude anticipated under current stratospheric ozone projections will not significantly inhibit photosynthesis and cause DNA damage in plants.This is in part due to the wellevolved protection mechanisms present in most plant species.One of the significant plant responses to UV-B is changes in foliar secondary chemistry,which could be translated into significant effects at higher trophic levels through plant-herbivore interactions and decomposition.Enhanced UV-B radiation due to stratospheric ozone depletion could also cause morphological changes that would affect competitive interactions,especially if contrasting UV-B sensitivity exists among the competitors. | Chenping Xu Joe H. | 6 | Mutations of connexin43 in fetuses with congenital heart malformations显示文摘Background Gap junction channels formed by connexin43 (Cx43) protein are important in cardiac morphogenesis, and Cx43 gene is thought to be associated with congenital heart malformation (CHM). This study was undertaken to detect the mutations of Cx43 in fetuses with CHM.Methods Cx43 extron DNA was amplified by PCR from 16 fetuses with a variety of CHM. The PCR products were analyzed by SSCP and DNA sequencing. Thirty children who had no CHM were selected as controls. Results Eight homozygous mutations of Cx43 were observed in a fetus with double outlet right ventricule (DORV), five of the 8 mutations were missense mutations including Arg239Trp, Ser251Thr, Ala253Pro, Pro283Leu and Thr290Asn, and the remaining 3 were silent polymorphisms including Gly252Gly, Pro256Pro and Thr275Thr. No mutations were found in other fetuses and the control group.Conclusions Mutations of Cx43 may be associated with congenital conotruncal anomalies. | 9 | Comparison of neutron irradiation effects on the electrical performances of SiGe HBT and SiBJT显示文摘The change of electrical performances of silicon-germanium (SiGe) heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) andSi bipolar junction transistor (BJT) was studied as a fumction of reactor fast neutron radiation fluence. After neutron irradia-tion, the collector current Ic and the current gain β decrease, and the base current Ib increases generally for SiGe HBT. Thehigher the neuron irradiation fluence is, the larger Ib increases. For conventional Si BJT, Ic and Ib increase as wellas β decreases much larger than SiGe HBT at the same fluence.
