1Validation of a discrete element model using magnetic resonance measurements显示文摘The discrete element model(DEM)is a very promising modelling strategy for two-phase granular systems.However,owing to a lack of experimental measurements,validation of numerical simulations of two-phase granular systems is still an important issue.In this study,a small two-dimensional gas- fluidized bed was simulated using a discrete element model.The dimensions of the simulated bed were 44 mm×10 mm×120 mm and the fluidized particles had a diameter dp=1.2 mm and density p=1000 kg/m3.The comparison between DEM simulations and experiments are performed on the basis of time-averaged voidage maps.The drag-law of Beetstra et al.[Beetstra,R.,van der Hoef,M.A.,&Kuipers,J. A.M.(2007b).Drag force of intermediate Reynolds number flow past mono-and bidispersed arrays of spheres. 2Revisiting the death of geography in the era of Big Data:the friction of distance in cyberspace and real space显示文摘Many scholars have argued that the importance of geographic proximity in human interactions has been diminished by the use of the Internet,while others disagree with this argument.Studies have noted the distance decay effect in both cyberspace and real space,showing that interactions occur with an inverse relationship between the number of interactions and the distance between the locations of the interactors.However,these studies rarely provide strong evidence to show the influence of distance on interactions in cyberspace,nor do they quantify the differences in the amount of friction of distance between cyberspace and real space.To fill this gap,this study used massive amounts of social media data(Twitter)to compare the influence of distance decay on human interactions between cyberspace and real space in a quantitative manner.To estimate the distance decay effect in both cyberspace and real space,the distance decay function of interactions in each space was modeled.Estimating the distance decay in cyberspace in this study can help predict the degree of information flow across space through social media.Measuring how far ideas can be diffused through social media is useful for users of location-based services,policy advocates,public health officials,and political campaigners.Su Yeon Han Ming-Hsiang Tsou Keith C.Clarke 2018International Journal of Digital Earth2018,11,5:2

6Sub-stoichiometric functionally graded titania fibres for water-splitting applications显示文摘The photo–electro–chemical(PEC) splitting of water requires semiconductor materials with a minimum energy gap of 1.23 e V along with conduction and valence bands overlapping the oxidation of H2O and reduction of HC respectively. This work overcomes the limitations of stoichiometric titania by manufacturing fine scale fibres that exhibit a compositional gradient of oxygen vacancies across the fibre length. In such a fibre configuration the fibre end that is chemically reduced to a relatively small extent performs as the photoanode and the oxygen vacancies enhance the absorption of light. The fibre end that is reduced the most consists of Magnéli phases and exhibits metallic electrical conductivity that enhances the electron–hole separation. The structure and composition of the functionally graded fibres, which were manufactured through extrusion, pressureless sintering and carbo-thermal reduction, are studied using XRD and electron microscopy. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements were performed in a three-electrode electrochemical system and showed that the oxygen vacancies in the functionally graded fibres affect the flat band potential and have increased carrier density. The efficiency of the system was evaluated with PEC measurements that shows higher efficiency for the functionally graded fibres compared to homogeneous TiO2 or Magnéli phase fibres. 7Reshaping the urban hierarchy:patterns of information diffusion on social media显示文摘The spatial diffusion of information is a process governed by the flow of interpersonal communication.The emergence of the Internet and especially social media platforms has reshaped this process and previous research has studied how online social networks contribute to the diffusion of information.Understanding such processes can help devise methods to maximize or control the reach of information or even identify upcoming events and social movements.Yet activities in cyberspace are still confined to physical locations and this geographic connection tends to be overlooked.In this research,we focus on geographic regions instead of individuals and study how the underlying hierarchical structure of regions relates to their response to the information.We examined the top 30 populated cities and metropolitan areas in the U.S.and retrieved Twitter data related to two selected topics from these regions,the 2015 Nepal Earthquake and the#JesuisCharlie hashtag in response to the Paris attacks on the Charlie Hebdo offices.We analyzed the similarity among regions of their response using multiple statistical methods and three urban classifications.Our results indicate that the diffusion of information is impacted by the hierarchy of urban regions and that the Twitter responses act more similar when the populated regions are positioned at the same level in the urban hierarchy.Jiue-An Yang Ming-Hsiang Tsou Krzysztof Janowicz Keith C.Clarke Piotr Jankowski 2019Geo-Spatial Information Science2019,22,3:0
