3Shear wave velocity-based liquefaction evaluation in the great Wenchuan earthquake: a preliminary case study显示文摘The great Wenchuan earthquake(Ms = 8.0) in 2008 caused severe damage in the western part of the Chengdu Plain.Soil liquefaction was one of the major causes of damage in the plain areas, and proper evaluation of liquefaction potential is important in the defi nition of the seismic hazard facing a given region and post-earthquake reconstruction. In this paper,a simplifi ed procedure is proposed for liquefaction assessment of sandy deposits using shear wave velocity(Vs),and soil liquefaction from the Banqiao School site was preliminarily investigated after the earthquake.Boreholes were made at the site and shear wave velocities were measured both by SASW and down-hole methods.Based on the in-situ soil information and Vs profi les,the liquefaction potential of this site was evaluated. The results are reasonably consistent with the actual fi eld behavior observed after the earthquake, indicating that the proposed procedure is effective. The possible effects of gravel and fi nes contents on liquefaction of sandy soils were also brie? y discussed.Zhou Yanguo,Chen Yunmin and Ling Daosheng MOE Key Laboratory of Soft Soils and Geoenvironmental Engineering,Institute of Geotechnical Engineering,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310058,China Assistant Professor Professor 2009Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2009,8,2:9

In this paper, the wave gauge array is described and the effects of the gauge spacing, the array orientations, etc. of the three array arrangements, i. e., linear array, T-type array and pentagon array, on the resolution of the directional spreading of waves, are investigated experimentally. This study can be used as a reference in the experimental study and the field measurement of directional waves.Yu Yuxiu Liu Shuxue Prof. Department of Civil Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian Assistant Researcher, Department of Civil Engineering, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 1992China Ocean Engineering1992,7,2:5
8The influence of synthetic jet excitation on secondary flow in compressor cascade显示文摘The detailed numerical simulation has been carried out to investigate the effect of synthetic jet excitation on the secondary flow at 5° incidence in a compressor cascade, in which the synthetic jet actuation is equipped on the suction surface. The influence of excitation position, one fixed near the trailing edge and the other fixed a little far from the trailing edge, has also been studied. The results show that unsteady disturbance of desirable synthetic jet effectively enhances the mixing of the fluid inside the separation region, which reduces the vortex intensity and the energy loss, improves the flow status in the cascade, and also suppresses velocity fluctuation near the trailing edge. Additionally, the actuation fixed near the separation region proves to be more effective and exit load distribution is more uniform due to the employment of the synthetic jet.Yanming LIU, Tuo SUN, Chaobin GUAN and Baoguo WANG School of Aerospace Engineering, Beijing Institute of Technology, Beijing, 100081, China Assistant Professor 2010Journal of Thermal Science2010,19,6:5
9STEP-POOL MORPHOLOGY IN HIGH-GRADIENT STREAMS显示文摘The focus of this study is to examine bed stability and morphology in high-gradient gravel-bed streams, and thus to improve understanding of the various parameters governing the sediment flow characteristics in mountain streams. Ultimately, this knowledge can be used to design pseudo-natural channels, as in the stream simulation method of culvert design; with this in mind, prototype conditions are evaluated in a flume with slopes ranging from 3% to 7%, and particle relative submergence varying from 0.5 to 2.5 for three bed size distributions. These experiments are designed to satisfy the conditions of dynamic similarity for flow and sediment, and they are preferred over field measurements since they allow a high degree of control over testing conditions. It is found that step-pool bedforms are the most ubiquitous features along the gravel bed. A new formula is developed that correlates step height with the gravel-bed size distribution, relative submergence of the particles, and the Froude number. The step spacing is found to be related to step height and streambed longitudinal slope. Flow resistance is also examined, and a formula is developed which accounts for the resistance due to the bedforms (form resistance), as well as the individual sediment particles (grain resistance).A.R. 10LOCAL SCOUR AROUND BRIDGE ABUTMENTS显示文摘This paper summarizes the design equations for local scour depth around bridge abutments as proposed by different investigators, and also the different factors, affecting the scour depth. Methods for the estimation of local scour depth based on dimensional analysis are also presented. The design methods based on empirical relations such as flow depth, flow intensity, sediment characteristics, abutments shape and size, alignment, and approach channel geometry are also discussed. Since clear-water scour is the maximum scour depth, the equation for clear-water scour is recommended for the computation of local scour depth around bridge abutments for uniformly and non- uniformly graded sediments.Er. 12“Color Revolutions” and Beyond显示文摘“Color revolutions” (or “orange revolutions”) broke out in some of the Commonwealth of Independent States in the past couple of years, reminiscent of the drama of disintegration of the former Soviet bloc at the turn of the 1990s. Why those upheavals came hot on the heels of the Soviet collapses merely a dozen or so years ago? Are we expecting more domino effects down the road? What geographical repercussions will they spark? A panel discussion was held on the topic and their views published in the journal.Dr. Ji Zhiye is Research Professor and Assistant President of China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), and Director of the Institute of Russian Studies concurrently. 14VELOCITY PROFILE OF SEDIMENT-LADEN OPEN CHANNEL FLOW显示文摘A detailed literature survey of the existing models for vertical velocity profiles of open channel flow for both clear water and sediment-laden water is performed. It is found that flow resistance and suspended sediment particles affect velocity profiles significantly. The Karman constant K of the logarithmic law is equal to 0.41 near the channel bed but far from the bed the value will change due to flow resistance and sediment suspension. The exponent of the power law velocity profile is also affected by those two factors. A general logarithmic law and a general power law for the description of velocity profiles arc proposed herein and verified by the experiment data presented by several investigators. Satisfactory results were obtained.LEE Hong Yuan and YU Wei Sheng Associate Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, China Graduate Research Assistant, Dept. of Civil Engineering, National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan, China 1991International Journal of Sediment Research1991,6,1:2

17EFFECT OF DYNAMIC STRAIN AGING ON LOW CYCLE FATIGUE BEHAVIOUR OF 18-8 AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STEEL显示文摘Studies were made of the symmetric tensile-compressive low cycle fatigue behaviour and theinfluence of dynamic strain aging(DSA)pre-treatment of 18-8 austenitic stainless steel.Within the testing amplitude range of strain.±0.5 % to±1.5 %,the three processes ofcyclic hardening, cyclic saturation and cyclic softening were observed. In the same amplitudeof strain, the peak stress of the samples pre-treated by DSA is higher than that of solid-solu-tion and cold working pre-treatment,but no remarkable differences of the fatigue lives ofthem were found.TEM observation shows that the uniform and stable dislocation networkswith high density form after DSA pre-treatment,which increases the cyclic peak stress.Thecyclic softening results from the low dislocation density and elongated cell structure with lowenergy.PENG Kaiping CHEN Wenzhe OIAN Kuangwu Fuzhou University,Fuzhou,China teaching assistant,Department of Mechanical Engineering,Fuzhou University,Fuzhou 350002,China 1993Acta Metallurgica Sinica(English Letters)1993,6,6:2
18WAVE CURRENT FORCE COEFFICIENTS ON INCLINED CYLINDER AND A NEW ESTIMATION METHOD显示文摘Based on the review of present force coefficients estimation methods, a new method in the frequency domain, revised cross-spectrum estimation method, is presented in this paper. Some experiments on the wave-current force on inclined cylinders are also described and the wave current force coefficients are estimated by the revised cross-spectrum estimation method. From the results, it is found that the wave and current directions have some regular effect on the coefficients. According to the results, some empirical formulas are obtained for converting the wave-current force coefficients on inclined cylinders into a unified coefficient. Comparisons show that the unified coefficients are in good agreement with other results.Teng Bin and Li Yucheng Research Assistant, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian Professor, Dalian University of Technology, Dalian 1990China Ocean Engineering1990,5,3:2
19PHYSICAL MODELING OF HYDRAULIC DESILTATION IN TAPU RESERVOIR显示文摘A movable bed physical model was constructed to investigate hydraulic desiltation by flushing and lateral erosion in the Tapu reservoir, Taiwan. The model scaling is based on the requirement for dynamic similarity of cohesive sediment deposit initiation in flushing processes. For model scaling, flume experiments investigating the initiation of cohesive sediment deposits were carried out to establish the relationship between critical shear stress of the flow and dry density of the deposit. Experiments in the physical model were then performed to measure the variations of the reservoir water level, the outlet discharge and the outflow sediment discharge. The processes of emptying and flushing were observed and analyzed in the main flushing channel. One of the experiments was conducted to simulate the on-site flushing operations on June 11, 1997. The results showed that the total 0cumulative flushed sediment volume by physical modeling was close to that by numerical simulation. To deal with the fioodplain deposits, experiments of lateral erosion as an auxiliary method were also conducted in the physical model to investigate the effectiveness and applicability for the0 Tapu reservoir.Jihn-Sung LAI and Fi-John CHANG Assistant Research Fellow, Hydrotech Research Institute, National Taiwan University, Taipei, 10617, Taiwan Professor, Department of Agriculture Engineering and Hydrotech Research Institute, National Taiwan University, Taipe 2001International Journal of Sediment Research2001,16,3:2
20BED FORMS AND RESISTANCE PROPERTIES OF LIGHT-WEIGHT BED MATERIAL显示文摘Based on experimental results from a large tilting flume, the characteristics and de- veloping processes of bed forms of plastic particles during scouring and deposition are systematically studied. The relationships of the occurence, development and disappearence of sand waves with the flow conditions are presented. Various statistical characteristics of sand waves with different sizes and the corresponding resistance properties of different bed forms of plastic particles are obtained. These results have filled in the gaps in bed forms and resistance properties of light sediment particles. It also serves as useful reference in the design of river model tests.WANG Guixian ,WANG Xingkui,GUO Jiachao Professor, Sediment Research Laboratory, Dept. of Hydraulic Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China.
