1Amphibians and Reptiles of Luzon Island,V:The Herpetofauna of Angat Dam Watershed,Bulacan Province,Luzon Island,Philippines显示文摘We report amphibian and reptile distribution records based on recent biodiversity surveys conducted at the Angat Watershed Reservation,Bulacan Province,Luzon Island,Philippines.This watershed constitutes the principal water source for Manila,the Philippines’largest metropolitan area.As virtually nothing is known of the herpetological diversity of the immediate area and the surrounding Bulacan Province,all species recorded as part of our surveys constitute major geographical records and/or significant range extensions.Our data result in a total of 63 new records of amphibian(19 frogs)and reptile(22 lizards,2 turtles,and 20 snakes)species for this protected area(and immediate vicinity)that serves as a watershed for the major metropolitan area of Manila and surrounding cities.Together with the few previous literature records,our new records bring the total number of amphibian and reptile species for Bulacan Province to 68.We discuss several strategies for future survey work(focusing on habitat type,seasonal variation,and elevational variability)that we anticipate will result in increased knowledge of diversity within the Angat Watershed Reserve.The impressive level of herpetological diversity within such a small area,so close to Metro Manila,emphasizes that the diversity and distribution patterns of amphibians and reptiles from Luzon are still poorly known and in need of further study.David S.MCLEOD Cameron D.SILER Arvin C.DIESMOS Mae L.DIESMOS Vhon S.GARCIA Angela O.ARKONCEO Kelvin L.BALAQUIT Charlene C.UY Mariden M.VILLASERAN Earle C.YARRA Rafe M.BROWN 2011Asian Herpetological Research2011,2,4:4
2Food Habits and Distribution of the Lake Taal Sea Snake(Hydrophis semperi Garman 1881) and the Sympatric Little File Snake(Acrochordus granulatus Schneider 1799) in Lake Taal, Philippines显示文摘Our knowledge about the food habits of sea snakes and how it is associated with their distribution has seen much development through its description across a number of species available through published literature except for the key threatened species such as Hydrophis semperi. This paper aims to describe the food habits of H. semperi through gut content and stable isotope analyses. We also compared data with the Little File Snake, Acrochordus granulatus, sympatric with H. semperi. Recorded captures of H. semperi suggest that the sea snake tends to occur in the littoral zones and the shallower portions of the limnetic zone. Gut content analysis of H. semperi have shown that gobies and eels are primary prey items. Halfbeaks(Family Hemiramphidae) were recorded as one of the Lake Taal Sea Snake's prey items which is considered as a new prey record for sea snakes. These extracted gut contents are confirmed to be the temporal food preference of H. semperi given our detected stable isotope signatures. It appears that A. granulatus and H. semperi share common prey items suggesting possible diet overlap and resource competition. 3Amphibians and Reptiles of Cebu,Philippines:The Poorly Understood Herpetofauna of an Island with Very Little Remaining Natural Habitat显示文摘Despite its proximity to other well studied islands, Cebu has received little attention from herpetologists, most likely because of early deforestation and the perception very little natural habitat remains for amphibians and reptiles. In this study, we present a preliminary assessment of island's herpetofauna, focusing our field work on Cebu's last remaining forest fragments and synthesizing all available historical museum distribution data. We surveyed amphibians and reptile populations using standardized methods to allow for comparisons between sites and assess sufficiency of sampling effort. Fieldwork resulted in a total of 27 species recorded from five study sites, complementing the 58 species previously known from the island. Together, our data and historical museum records increase the known number of Cebu's resident species to 13 amphibians(frogs) and 63 reptiles(lizards, snakes, turtle, crocodile). We recorded the continued persistence Cebu's rare and endemic lizard(Brachymeles cebuensis) and secretive snakes such as Malayotyphlops hypogius, and Ramphotyhlops cumingii, which persist despite Cebu's long history of widespread and continuous habitat degradation. Most species encountered, including common and widespread taxa, appeared to persist at low population abundances. To facilitate the immediate recovery of the remaining forest fragments, and resident herpetofauna, conservation effort must be sustained.
