Biochar-Induced Changes in Soil Resilience:Effects of Soil Texture and Biochar Dosage显示文摘Biochars are, amongst other available amendment materials, considered as an attractive tool in agriculture for carbon sequestration and improvement of soil functions. The latter is widely discussed as a consequence of improved physical quality of the amended soil. However, the mechanisms for this improvement are still poorly understood. This study investigated the effect of woodchip biochar amendment on micro-structural development, micro-and macro-structural stability, and resilience of two differently textured soils, fine sand(FS) and sandy loam(SL). Test substrates were prepared by adding 50 or 100 g kg^(-1) biochar to FS or SL. Total porosity and plant available water were significantly increased in both soils. Moreover, compressive strength of the aggregates was significantly decreased when biochar amount was doubled. Mechanical resilience of the aggregates at both micro-and macro-scale was improved in the biochar-amended soils, impacting the cohesion and compressive behavior. A combination of these effects will result in an improved pore structure and aeration. Consequently, the physicochemical environment for plants and microbes is improved. Furthermore, the improved stability properties will result in better capacity of the biochar-amended soil to recover from the myriad of mechanical stresses imposed under arable systems, including vehicle traffic, to the weight of overburden soil. However, it was noted that doubling the amendment rate did not in any case offer any remarkable additional improvement in these properties, suggesting a further need to investigate the optimal amendment rate.Ayodele Ebenezer AJAYI Rainer HORN 2017Pedosphere2017,27,2:5
Assessing resources for implementing a community directed intervention (CDI) strategy in delivering multiple health interventions in urban poor communities in Southwestern Nigeria: a qualitative study显示文摘Background:Many simple, affordable and effective disease control measures have had limited impact due to poor access especially by the poorer populations(urban and rural)and inadequate community participation.A proven strategy to address the problem of access to health interventions is the Community Directed Interventions(CDI)approach, which has been used successfully in rural areas. This study was carried out to assess resources for the use of a CDI strategy in delivering health interventions in poorly-served urban communities in Ibadan,Nigeria. Methods:A formative study was carried out in eight urban poor communities in the Ibadan metropolis in the Oyo State.Qualitative methods comprising 12 focus group discussions(FGDs)with community members and 73 key informant interviews(KIIs)with community leaders, programme managers,community-based organisations(CBOs),non-government organisations(NGOs)and other stakeholders at federal, state and local government levels were used to collect data to determine prevalent diseases and healthcare delivery services,as well as to explore the potential resources for a CDI strategy. All interviews were audio recorded.Content analysis was used to analyse the data. Results:Malaria, upper respiratory tract infection, diarrhoea and measles were found to be prevalent in children, while hypertension and diabetes topped the list of diseases among adults.Healthcare was financed mainly by out-of-pocket expenses.Cost and location were identified as hindrances to utilisation of health facilities;informal cooperatives(esusu)were available to support those who could not pay for care.Immunisation, nutrition, reproductive health, tuberculosis(TB)and leprosy, environmental health, malaria and HIV/AIDs control programmes were the ongoing interventions.Delivery strategies included house-to-house,home-based treatment, health education and campaigns.Community participation in the planning, implementation and monitoring of development projects was reported as common practice. The resources available for these activities and which constitute potential resources for the CDI process include community volunteers,CBOs and NGOs.Others are landlords;professional, women and youth associations;social clubs, religious organisations and the available health facilities. Conclusion:This study’s findings support the feasibility of using the CDI process in delivering health interventions in urban poor communities and show that potential resources for the strategy abound in the communities.Ikeoluwapo O Ajayi Ayodele S Jegede Catherine O Falade Johannes Sommerfeld 2013Infectious Diseases of Poverty2013,2,1:4
A discrete model for prediction of radon flux from fractured rocks显示文摘Prediction of radon flux from the fractured zone of a propagating cave mine is basically associated with uncertainty and complexity. For instance, there is restricted access to these zones for field measurements, and it is quite difficult to replicate the complex nature of both natural and induced fractures in these zones in laboratory studies. Hence, a technique for predicting radon flux from a fractured rock using a discrete fracture network(DFN) model is developed to address these difficulties. This model quantifies the contribution of fractures to the total radon flux, and estimates the fracture density from a measured radon flux considering the effects of advection, diffusion, as well as radon generation and decay. Radon generation and decay are classified as reaction processes. Therefore, the equation solved is termed as the advection-diffusion-reaction equation(ADRE). Peclet number(Pe), a conventional dimensionless parameter that indicates the ratio of mass transport by advection to diffusion, is used to classify the transport regimes. The results show that the proposed model effectively predicts radon flux from a fractured rock. An increase in fracture density for a rock sample with uniformly distributed radon generation rate can elevate radon flux significantly compared with another rock sample with an equivalent increase in radon generation rate. In addition to Pe, two other independent dimensionless parameters(derived for radon transport through fractures) significantly affect radon dimensionless flux.Findings provide insight into radon transport through fractured rocks and can be used to improve radon control measures for proactive mitigation.K.M. 5Genome-wide characterization and developmental expression profiling of long non-coding RNAs in Sogatella furcifera显示文摘The genome-wide characterization of long non-coding RNA(lncRNA)in insects demonstrates their importance in fundamental biological processes.Esentially,an in-depth understanding of the functional repertoire of lncRNA in insects is pivotal to insect resources utilization and sustainable pest control.Using a custom bioinformatics pipeline,we identified 1861 lncRNAs encoded by 1852 loci in the Sogatella furcifera genome. We profiled lncRNA expression in different developmental stages and observed that the expression of lncRNAs is more highly temporally restricted compared to protein-coding genes.More up-re gulated Sogatella furcifera lncRNA expressed in the embryo,4th and 5th instars, suggesting that increased lncRNA levels may play a role in these developmental stages. We compared the relationship between the expression of Sogatella furcifera lncRNA and its nearest protein gene and found that lncRNAs were more correlated to their downstream coding neighbors on the opposite strand. Our genome-wide profiling of lncRNAs in Sogatella furcifera identifies exciting candidates for characterization of lncRNAs,and also provides information on lncRNA regulation during insect development.Zhao-Xia Chang Olugbenga Emmanuel Ajayi Dong-Yang Guo Qing-Fa Wu 2020Insect Science2020,27,5:3
Numerical investigation of the effectiveness of radon control measures in cave mines显示文摘Ventilation is one of the radon control measures in an underground working environment. However, the dynamics related to the cave mining methods particularly in block/panel cave mines, complicate the design of effective ventilation system, and implementation.Events such as hang ups(in the drawbells),leakage from old workings, and changes in cave porosity lead to differing response of an existing ventilation designs. However,it is difficult to investigate these conditions at the mine or with a laboratory scale study. Therefore, this study develops a discrete model to investigate the impact of different radon control measures in cave mines using computational fluid dynamics techniques. We considered two ventilation conditions for a fully developed cave:with and without the undercut ventilation. For each of the two conditions,we studied four parameters:airflow distribution through the production drifts, radon distribution through the production drifts, the effect of increasing airflow on radon concentration, and the effect of a cave top negative pressure on radon distribution. The results show that:the undercut ventilation significantly increases the radon concentration in the production drift;the growth of radon concentration through the production drift is nonlinear(oscillating pattern);maintaining a negative pressure on top of the cave is more effective at mitigating radon exposure, when the undercut ventilation is active;and increase in air volume flow rate decreases radon concentration in most regions, however, there might be regions with significant radon accumulation due to pressure variation across the drifts. These findings provide vital information for designing an effective ventilation system and for proactive implementation of radon control measures in cave mines.Kayode Ajayi Khosro Shahbazi Purushotham Tukkaraja Kurt Katzenstein 2019International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2019,29,3:3
Nutrient uptake, maximum yield production, and economic return of maize under deficit irrigation with biochar and inorganic fertiliser amendments显示文摘The individual and combined effects of biochar(B)and inorganic fertiliser(F)have all been widely proofed to improve soil fertility and enhance crop growth and yield under irrigation(I)and rain fed conditions. However, the strength of their individual and combined effects on crop productivity has been scarcely reported. In addition, few studies have assessed their individual and co-application effects on economic returns. Therefore,a 2-year field experiment which consisted of factorial combination of irrigation(I)[100%full irrigation(FI),80%FI and 60%FI],biochar(0 and 20 t/ha)and fertiliser(0 and 300 kg/ha)was conducted.According to the results, irrigation was the dominant factor that influences maize grain yield, followed by inorganic fertiliser and biochar, and they were all significant in their main effects. The strength of interaction effects among,I,F and B on maize grain yield follow the sequence F×I>B×F>B×I.The economic analysis showed that the ternary combination of B,F and I was more economical than the binary combination of B plus I,and F plus I(in that order),when compared with the standalone application of I at maximum production in the field experiment. In addition, combined applications of biochar and fertiliser improved soil nutrients, nutrient uptake in all irrigation treatments, compared to the standalone applications of biochar or fertiliser.Further research is,therefore, recommended for long-term evaluation of the economic viability of integrating biochar with fertiliser under irrigation.Oluwaseun Temitope Faloye Ayodele Ebenezer Ajayi Michael Olarewaju Alatise Babatunde Sunday Ewulo Rainer Horn 2019Biochar2019,1,4:2

Antibacterial potency of methanol extracts of lower plants显示文摘Antibacterial potency of methanol extracts of three green lower plants, Pneumatopteris afra, Platycerium bifurcatum and Nephrolepsis bisserata was determined using agar dilution method on clinical strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella spp. and Salmomelia typhi. Antibacterial activities were observed at concentrations of 12.5, 25.0, 50.0 and 100.0 μg/ml. Their minimum inhibitory concentrations ranged from 12.5~100 μg/ml. Extracts of P. afra and P. bifurcatum were most active. Antibacterial activities observed with N. bisserata were less pronounced with no detectable activity at extract con-centrations of 12.5 and 25.0 μg/ml. E. coli, together with S. aureus appeared to be the most susceptible of the test bacteria while Klebsiella spp. was least sensitive. The significance of our findings is discussed.OJO O.O. AJAYI A.O.
