| 1 | Soil salinity prediction in the Lower Cheliff plain(Algeria) based on remote sensing and topographic feature analysis显示文摘Soil salinity and ground surface morphology in the Lower Cheliff plain(Algeria) can directly or indirectly impact the stability of environments. Soil salinization in this area is a major pedological problem related to several natural factors, and the topography appears to be important in understanding the spatial distribution of soil salinity. In this study, we analyzed the relationship between topographic parameters and soil salinity, giving their role in understanding and estimating the spatial distribution of soil salinity in the Lower Cheliff plain. Two satellite images of Landsat 7 in winter and summer 2013 with reflectance values and the digital elevation model(DEM) were used. We derived the elevation and slope gradient values from the DEM corresponding to the sampling points in the field. We also calculated the vegetation and soil indices(i.e. NDVI(normalized difference vegetation index), RVI(ratio vegetation index), BI(brightness index) and CI(color index)) and soil salinity indices, and analyzed the correlations of soil salinity with topography parameters and the vegetation and soil indices. The results showed that soil salinity had no correlation with slope gradient, while it was significantly correlated with elevation when the EC(electrical conductivity) values were less than 8 d S/m. Also, a good relationship between the spectral bands and measured soil EC was found, leading us to define a new salinity index, i.e. soil adjusted salinity index(SASI). SASI showed a significant correlation with elevation and measured soil EC values. Finally, we developed a multiple linear regression for soil salinity prediction based on elevation and SASI. | 2 | CeO2 nanoscale particles:Synthesis,characterization and photocatalytic activity under UVA light irradiation显示文摘CeO_2 nanoparticles(NPs) were synthesized in alkaline medium via the homogeneous precipitation method and were subsequently calcined at 80 ℃/24 h(assigned as CeO_2-80) and 500 ℃/2 h(assigned as CeO_2-500). The as-prepared materials and the commercial ceria(assigned as CeO_2-com) were characterized using TGA-MS, XRD, SEM-EDX, UV-vis DRS and IEP techniques. The photocatalytic performances of all obtained photocatalysts were assessed by the degradation of Congo red azo-dye(CR) under UVAlight irradiation at various environmental key factors(e.g., reaction time and calcination temperature).Results reveal that CeO_2 compounds crystalize with cubic phase, CeO_2-500 exhibits smaller crystallite size(9 nm vs 117 nm) than that of bare CeO_2-com. SEM analysis shows that the materials are sphericallike in shape NPs with strong assembly of CeO_2 NPs observed in the CeO_2-500 NPs. EDX analysis confirms the stoichiometry of CeO_2 NPs. UV-vis DRS measurement reveals that, CeO_2-500 NPs exhibits a red-shift of absorption band and a more narrow bandgap(2.6 eV vs 3.20 eV) than that of bare CeO_2-com. On the contrary, Urbach energy of Eu is found to be increased from 0.12 eV(CeO_2-com) to 0.17 eV(CeO_2-500),highlighting an increase of crystalline size and internal microstrain in the CeO_2-500 NPs sample. Zeta potential(IEP) of CeO_2-500 NPs is found to be 7.2. UVA-light-responsive photocatalytic activity is observed with CeO_2-500 NPs at a rate constant of 10×10^(-3) min^(-1), which is four times higher than that of CeO_2-com(K_(app)=2.4×10^(-3) min^(-1)) for the degradation of CR. Pseudo-first-order kinetic model gives the best fit. | 6 | Clinical outcomes of combined versus separate carbachol and brimonidine drops in correcting presbyopia显示文摘Background:To test and compare in a masked fashion the efficacy of using a parasympathomimetic drug(3%carbachol)and an alpha-2 agonist(0.2%brimonidine)in both combined and separate forms to create optically beneficial miosis to pharmacologically improve vision in presbyopia.Methods:A prospective,double-masked,randomized,controlled clinical trial was conducted.Ten naturally emmetropic and presbyopic subjects between 42 and 58 years old with uncorrected distance visual acuity of at least 20/20 in both eyes without additional ocular pathology were eligible for inclusion.All subjects received 3%carbachol and 0.2%brimonidine in both combined and separate forms,3%carbachol alone and 0.2%brimonidine(control)alone in their non-dominant eye in a crossover manner with one week washout between tests.The subjects’pupil sizes and both near and distance visual acuities will be evaluated pre-and post-treatment at 1,2,4,and 8 h,by a masked examiner at the same room illumination.Results:Statistically significant improvement in mean near visual acuity(NVA)was achieved in all subjects who received combined 3%carbachol and 0.2% brimonidine in the same formula compared with those who received separate forms or carbachol alone or brimonidine alone(P<0.0001).Conclusion:Based on the data,the combined solution demonstrated greater efficacy than the other solutions that were tested.Improving the depth of focus by making the pupil small caused statistically significant improvement in near visual acuity,with no change in binocular distance vision.Trial registration:ACTRN12616001565437.Registered 11 November 2016. | Almamoun Abdelkader Herbert E.Kaufman | 2016 | Eye and Vision2016,3,1: | 5 |
| 7 | Functional and anatomical evaluation of the effect of nepafenac in prevention of macular edema after phacoemulsification in diabetic patients显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the effect of prophylactic administration of nepafenac in prevention of macular edema occurring in diabetic patients after phacoemulsification and to investigate the correlation between optical coherence tomography(OCT) foveal thickness and multifocal electroretinogram(MF-ERG) parameters.METHODS: The study included two groups. Group 1 included 50 diabetic patients with senile cataract(50 eyes, 30 females, 20 males, aged 55±7 y) received nepafenac 0.1% eye drop. Group 2 included another 50 diabetic patients with senile cataract(50 eyes, 22 female, 28 males, aged 53.8±8 y) did not receive nepafenac. All patients were followed up for 3 mo postoperatively. OCT and MF-ERG were done preoperative and at 1 wk, 1, 2 and 3 mo.RESULTS: The mean foveal thickness was statistically significantly lower in Group 1. Five eyes in Group 2 developed clinical cystoid macular oedema(CMO)(10%), and no patients in Group 1 developed central macular thickening more than 50 μm. There were insignificant differences in MF-ERG amplitudes and latencies between the two groups except in the five eyes that developed CMO, there statistically significant reduction of MF-ERG amplitude with increase in foveal thickness. CONCLUSION: Perioperative nepafenac reduces the incidence of CMO following uncomplicated phacoemulsification significantly. | 11 | Laboratory Study of Geotextiles Performance on Reinforced Sandy Soil显示文摘This paper presents the results of triaxial tests conducted for the investigation of the influence of geotextiles on stress-strain and volumetric change behaviour of reinforced sandy soil. Tests were carried out on loose sandy soil. The experimental program includes drained compression tests on samples reinforced with different values of both geotextiles layers(Ng) and confining pressure(σ′c). Two methods of preparation were used: air pluviation(AP) and moist tamping(MT). Test results show that the geotextiles induce a quasi-linear increase in the stress deviator(q) and volume contraction in the reinforced sand. Method of preparation significantly affects the shear strength; samples prepared by the air pluviation method and mobilized deviator stresses are significantly higher than those prepared by moist tamping method. Geotextiles restrict the dilation of reinforced sandy soil and consequently the contraction increases. The mobilized friction angle increases with increasing number of layers and decreases with increasing initial confining pressure. Samples prepared by moist tamping present mobilized friction angles significantly lower than those prepared by air pluviation method. For samples prepared by the air pluviation method, the secant modulus at ε1=1% and 5% decreases with increasing geotextile layers; those prepared by the moist tamping method, secant modulus at ε1=1% and 5% increases with increasing number of geotextile layer sand confining pressure. | 13 | Effect of fibrin glue on corneal lamellar healing and how it correlates to biomechanical properties: biomechanical wavefront analysis and confocal study显示文摘Background:To evaluate,using a rabbit model,the influence of the wound healing process at the flap edge on corneal biomechanics after sutured,glued,and non-augmented microkeratome flaps.Methods:Unilateral 160μm thick laser in situ keratomileusis(LASIK)flaps using a mechanical microkeratome were performed on the corneas of the left eyes of 36 rabbits.Animals were then divided into 3 groups of 12 rabbits each:A:the flaps were glued with human fibrin tissue adhesive(Tisseel);B:the flaps were sutured;and C:the flaps were allowed to heal without the use of sutures or glue(non-augmented).The contralateral eyes served as controls.Reichert ocular response analyzer(ORA)was used to measure corneal hysteresis(CH),corneal resistance factor(CRF),Goldmann-correlated intraocular pressure(IOPg)and cornea-compensated IOP(IOPcc)at 6 weeks and 3 months postoperatively.In vivo confocal microscopy(IVCM)was also used to study the corneal wound healing process in all groups.Results:Both mean CH and mean CRF were significantly higher in sutured and glued groups compared with the non-augmented group at 6 weeks and 3 months postoperatively(P<0.0001).No statistically significant difference in corneal biomechanics was found between controls and groups A and B at any time points.Activated keratocytes were detected at the wound edge and peripheral flap interface in sutured and glued groups.Conclusion:The healing process at the wound edge is critical for optimal corneal integrity.Fibrin glue may serve as a safe and effective substitute to sutures in enhancing the corneal flap edge healing response and in increasing its mechanical strength. | Almamoun Abdelkader | 2016 | Eye and Vision2016,3,1: | 2 |
| 14 | Geochemical characterization of the salinity of irrigated soils in arid regions(Biskra, SE Algeria)显示文摘The agriculture in Biskra,southeastern Algeria,is based on traditional practices and characterized by small irrigated fields.In the last decades,the increasing demand in water as well as the scarcity of rainfall has forced many farmers to use groundwater of low quality to maintain the profitability of their crops.Unfortunately,this practice seems to be the main harmful factor for soil quality in the region since it is responsible for the salinization of the irrigated areas.Aiming to assess the impact of this phenomenon,the soils of the irrigated perimeter of El Ghrous-a representative rural community located in the west of Biskra-have been analyzed.A set of 82 soil samples was collected from top and subsoil(0-15 and15-35 cm respectively),on which the following physicochemical analyzes were performed:Ca^(2+),Mg^(2+),K^(+),Na^(+),Cl^(-),SO_(4)^(2-),HCO_(3)^(-),NO_(3)^(-),pH,electrical conductivity(EC)and sodium adsorption ratio.A Principal Component Analysis was performed to individuate the geochemical processes that influenced significantly the evolution of soil salinity and its pathways.The results showed a calcium sulfate(CaSO_(4))facies with a high risk of salinity and a low to medium risk of alkalinity.The calcite residual alkalinity and generalized residual alkalinity decreased as the solutions became more concentrated.Most of the samples were oversaturated in carbonate minerals(aragonite,calcite,and dolomite)and under saturated in evaporitic minerals(anhydrite,gypsum,and halite).Finally,two multiple linear regressions(using cations and anions as independent variables)have been proposed to quantify soil salinity.These equations,with an accuracy of 85%,can represent a time and money-saving tool for managers and farmers to estimate the EC,in comparison to the traditional estimation methods. | Mohamed Amine Abdennour Abdelkader Douaoui Jesus Barrena Manuel Pulido Abdelhamid Bradai Amel Bennacer Chiara Piccini Alberto Alfonso-Torreno | 2021 | Acta Geochimica2021,40,2: | 2 |
| 15 | Bethe–Weizs?cker semiempirical mass formula coefficients 2019update based on AME2016显示文摘In the present work, the classical Bethe–Weizs?cker(BW) mass formula with five energy terms is revisited and updated. We use the least-squares adjustments on the binding energy of 2497 different nuclides from the last update of the atomic mass evaluation,AME2016 published in March 2017, to provide a new set of energy coefficients of the mass formula. The obtained set of formula coefficients allowed us to reproduce most of the experimental values of the binding energies for each nucleus with A ≥50. The comparison between the binding energies provided with updated mass formula and those of AME2016 on the one hand, and those of previous works,on the other hand, yields relative errors that oscillate between less than 0.05% and 1.5%. | 16 | Sequential extraction of Cs and Sr from Ain Oussera soils around Es-Salam research reactor facility显示文摘Four types of undisturbed soil in Ain Oussera region around the Es-Salam reactor facility,located in the south of Algiers, Algeria, at about 200 km, were artificially contaminated for one year with stable CsCl and SrCl2 in order to simulate an accidental release of these elements. This study was performed using sequential extraction procedure based on Shultz method and containing six fractions. The selectivity of the extraction protocol was confirmed by analyzing some elements(Ca, C, Fe, Mn, Si and Al) designed as indicators of the targeted phases. The obtained results showed an acceptable reproducibility, in view of the coefficients of variation that were in most cases less than 15%. The results revealed a clear proportional correlation between the extracted Cs and Sr in fractions for each soil and some of soils physicochemical properties. Organic matter appears to play an important role in the soil retention, particularly for Cs where the extracted percentage exceeds to 30% in whole soils. In contrast, strontium expresses a remarkable affinity for the fraction bound to carbonates. The obtained data also indicate that the availability of Cs in the four soils is less important compared to Sr availability.
