| 1 | Utilisation of transparent synthetic soil surrogates in geotechnical physical models: A review显示文摘Efforts to obtain non-intrusive measurement of deformations and spatial flow within soil mass prior to the advent of transparent soils have perceptible limitations. The transparent soil is a two-phase medium composed of both the synthetic aggregate and fluid components of identical refractive indices aiming at attaining transparency of the resulting soil. The transparency facilitates real life visualisation of soil continuum in physical models. When applied in conjunction with advanced photogrammetry and image processing techniques, transparent soils enable the quantification of the spatial deformation, displacement and multi-phase flow in physical model tests. Transparent synthetic soils have been successfully employed in geotechnical model tests as soil surrogates based on the testing results of their geotechnical properties which replicate those of natural soils. This paper presents a review on transparent synthetic soils and their numerous applications in geotechnical physical models. The properties of the aggregate materials are outlined and the features of the various transparent clays and sands available in the literature are described. The merits of transparent soil are highlighted and the need to amplify its application in geotechnical physical model researches is emphasised. | 2 | Analytical and finite-element study of optimal strain distribution in various beam shapes for energy harvesting applications显示文摘Owing to the increasing demand for harvesting energy from environmental vibration for use in self-powered electronic applications, cantilever-based vibration energy harvesting has attracted considerable interest from various parties and has become one of the most common approaches to converting redundant mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the output voltage produced from a piezoelectric material depends largely on the geometric shape and the size of the beam, there is a need to model and compare the performance of cantilever beams of differing geometries.This paper presents the study of strain distribution in various shapes of cantilever beams, including a convex and concave edge profile elliptical beam that have not yet been discussed in any prior literature. Both analytical and finite-element models are derived and the resultant strain distributions in the beam are computed based on a MATLAB solver and ANSYS finite-element analysis tools. | 3 | TelG Mote: A Green Wireless Sensor Node Platform for Smart Home and Ambient Assisted Living显示文摘The wireless sensor network(WSN) consists of sensor nodes that interact with each other to collectively monitor environmental or physical conditions at different locations for the intended users. One of its potential deployments is in the form of smart home and ambient assisted living(SHAAL) to measure patients or elderly physiological signals, control home appliances, and monitor home. This paper focuses on the development of a wireless sensor node platform for SHAAL application over WSN which complies with the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and operates in 2.4 GHz ISM(industrial, scientific, and medical) band. The initial stage of SHAAL application development is the design of the wireless sensor node named Tel G mote. The main features of Tel G mote contributing to the green communications include low power consumption, wearable, flexible, user-friendly, and small sizes. It is then embedded with a self-built operating system named Wise OS to support customized operation. The node can achieve a packet reception rate(PRR) above 80% for a distance of up to 8 m. | 4 | Green Architecture for Dense Home Area Networks Based on Radio-over-Fiber with Data Aggregation Approach显示文摘The high-density population leads to crowded cities. The future city is envisaged to encompass a large-scale network with diverse applications and a massive number of interconnected heterogeneous wireless-enabled devices. Hence, green technology elements are crucial to design sustainable and future-proof network architectures. They are the solutions for spectrum scarcity, high latency, interference, energy efficiency, and scalability that occur in dense and heterogeneous wireless networks especially in the home area network(HAN). Radio-over-fiber(ROF) is a technology candidate to provide a global view of HAN's activities that can be leveraged to allocate orthogonal channel communications for enabling wireless-enabled HAN devices transmission, with considering the clustered-frequency-reuse approach. Our proposed network architecture design is mainly focused on enhancing the network throughput and reducing the average network communications latency by proposing a data aggregation unit(DAU). | 5 | Optical transmission in thin films of vanadium compounds显示文摘Thin films of five vanadium compounds/composite:(1) VO2(3-fl)(3-fl=3-Hydroxyflavone),(2)VO(pbd)2(pbd=1-Phenyl-1, 3-butadione),(3) VO(dbm)2(dbm= Dibenzoylmethane),(4) VPc(Vanadyl Phthalocyanine)and(5) V2O5-PEPC(V2O5- poly-N-epoxypropylcarbazole composite), were deposited by the dropcasting method from the solution in benzene. The transmittance–irradiance relationships were investigated and the transmission in the visible spectrum and optical images were obtained as well.
