1MAKING AND VALIDATING COMPLEX DECISIONS WITH THE AHP/ANP显示文摘Several examples that serve to validate the AHP/ANP with matrices hierarchies and networks are given in this paper. They are then followed by a discussion of the real numbers and how they are generated without the need for an absolute zero, and how they define an absolute scale of measurement that also does not need an absolute zero. In the AHP/ANP the measurement of an alternative depends on what other alternatives it is compared with. The result is that rank can change if alternatives are added or deleted, something that does not occur in one-at-a-time rating of the alternatives by comparing them with an ideal. An example is provided to show that this is natural and need not involve new criteria or change in judgments. A brief discussion of Utility Theory, the other multi-criteria theory, which uses interval scales to measure intangibles and some of its problems and paradoxes, is given. The references at the end include most of the papers that are adverse to the AHP with brief comments about several of them given in the paper.Thomas L. 2LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION PLANNING UNDER ENVIRONMENTAL RISKS AND UNCERTAINTIES显示文摘In this paper we demonstrate the need for risk-adjusted approaches to planning expansion of livestock production. In particular, we illustrate that under exposure to risk, a portfolio of producers is needed where more efficient producers co-exist and cooperate with less efficient ones given that the latter are associated with lower, uncorrelated or even negatively correlated contingencies. This raises important issues of cooperation and risk sharing among diverse producers. For large-scale practical allocation problems when information on the contingencies may be disperse, not analytically tractable, or be available on aggregate levels, we propose a downscaling procedure based on behavioral principles utilizing spatial risk preference structure. It allows for estimation of production allocation at required resolutions accounting for location specific risks and suitability constraints. The approach provides a tool for harmonization of data from various spatial levels. 3BIG DATA:UNLEASHING INFORMATION显示文摘At present,it is projected that about 4 zettabytes(or 10**21 bytes)of digital data are being generated per year by everything from underground physics experiments to retail transactions to security cameras to global positioning systems.In the U.S.,major research programs are being funded to deal with big data in all five sectors(i.e.,services,manufacturing,construction,agriculture and mining)of the economy.Big Data is a term applied to data sets whose size is beyond the ability of available tools to undertake their acquisition,access,analytics and/or application in a reasonable amount of time.Whereas Tien(2003)forewarned about the data rich,information poor(DRIP)problems that have been pervasive since the advent of large-scale data collections or warehouses,the DRIP conundrum has been somewhat mitigated by the Big Data approach which has unleashed information in a manner that can support informed-yet,not necessarily defensible or valid-decisions or choices.Thus,by somewhat overcoming data quality issues with data quantity,data access restrictions with on-demand cloud computing,causative analysis with correlative data analytics,and model-driven with evidence-driven applications,appropriate actions can be undertaken with the obtained information.New acquisition,access,analytics and application technologies are being developed to further Big Data as it is being employed to help resolve the 14 grand challenges(identified by the National Academy of Engineering in 2008),underpin the 10 breakthrough technologies(compiled by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2013)and support the Third Industrial Revolution of mass customization.James M.TIEN 2013Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2013,22,2:34

6THERE IS NO MATHEMATICAL VALIDITY FOR USING FUZZY NUMBER CRUNCHING IN THE ANALYTIC HIERARCHY PROCESS显示文摘Fuzzy logic has difficulty producing valid answers in decision-making. Absent are theorems to prove that it works to produce results already known that are being estimated with judgments by transforming such judgments numerically. The numerical representation of judgments in the AHP is already fuzzy. Making fuzzy judgments more fuzzy does not lead to a better more valid outcome and it often leads to a worse one. The compatibility index of the AHP is used to illustrate how the answers obtained by fuzzifying AHP judgments do not produce better results than direct derivation of the principal eigenvector. Other authors who did experiments with given data in decision making quoted in the conclusions section of the paper, have observed that fuzzy sets gives the poorest answers among all methods used to derive best decisions.Thomas L. 8COMPARISONS OF LOW CARBON POLICIES IN SUPPLY CHAIN COORDINATION显示文摘This paper investigates the influence of low-carbon policies on channel coordination for a two-echelon supply chain consisting of one supplier and one retailer.Four different models are considered:the basic model,the carbon emission model,the carbon emission trading model and the carbon tax model.We find that the government policy on all carbon emission models is not universal among the firms as well as the customers.The carbon emission trading policy is always better than the carbon emission policy and the carbon tax policy when the allocated carbon emission quotas are greater than the carbon emissions.The carbon emission trading policy is proved to be an effective mechanism which can motivate the supply chain to reduce carbon emissions.Under certain conditions,the supply chain prefers the carbon emission trading policy with higher carbon price to other policies.In the framework of Stackelberg game with the supplier as the leader,for each carbon policy,the paper presents coordination mechanism with the all-unit wholesale quantity discount contract(AWQD).We analyze and compare the influence of low-carbon policies on channel coordination for the four low-carbon policies.Numerical experiments are conducted to examine our findings.Lei YANG Chenshi ZHENG Minghui XU 2014Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2014,23,3:20

11ORDERED WEIGHTED DISTANCE MEASURE显示文摘The aim of this paper is to develop an ordered weighted distance(OWD) measure,which is the generalization of some widely used distance measures,including the normalized Hamming distance, the normalized Euclidean distance,the normalized geometric distance,the max distance,the median distance and the min distance,etc.Moreover,the ordered weighted averaging operator,the generalized ordered weighted aggregation operator,the ordered weighted geometric operator,the averaging operator,the geometric mean operator,the ordered weighted square root operator,the square root operator,the max operator,the median operator and the min operator are also the special cases of the OWD measure.Some methods depending on the input arguments are given to determine the weights associated with the OWD measure.The prominent characteristic of the OWD measure is that it can relieve(or intensify) the influence of unduly large or unduly small deviations on the aggregation results by assigning them low(or high) weights.This desirable characteristic makes the OWD measure very suitable to be used in many actual fields,including group decision making,medical diagnosis, data mining,and pattern recognition,etc.Finally,based on the OWD measure,we develop a group decision making approach,and illustrate it with a numerical example.Zeshui XU Jian CHEN 2008Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2008,17,4:16

15MANUFACTURING AND SERVICES:FROM MASS PRODUCTION TO MASS CUSTOMIZATION显示文摘Manufacturing and services constitute two of the five sectors of every country's economy;depending on the maturity of the economy,they are-in terms of employment-typically the two largest sectors.The outputs or products of an economy can also be divided into goods products(due to manufacturing,construction,agriculture and mining) and services products.To date,the goods and services products have,for the most part,been mass produced;it is the premise of this paper that recent technological advances-including flexible manufacturing,cloud computing,nanotechnology and smart sensing-can better enable the transformation from mass production to mass customization.We regard mass customization as the simultaneous and real time management of supply and demand chains,based on a taxonomy that can be defined in terms of its underpinning component and management foci.From a components perspective,we first consider the value chain of supplier,manufacturer,assembler,retailer,and customer,and then develop a consistent set of definitions for supply and demand chains based on the location of the customer order penetration point.From a management perspective,we classify the methods that are employed in the management of these chains,based on whether supply and/or demand are flexible or fixed.Interestingly,our management taxonomy highlights a very critical research area at which both supply and demand are flexible,thus manageable.Simultaneous management of supply and demand chains sets the stage for mass customization which is concerned with meeting the needs of an individualized customer market.Simultaneous and real time management of supply and demand chains set the stage for real time mass customization(e.g.,wherein a tailor first laser scans an individual's upper torso and then delivers a uniquely fitted jacket within a reasonable period,while the individual is waiting).The benefits of real time mass customization cannot be over-stated as goods and services become indistinguishable and are co-produced-as 'servgoods'-in real time,resulting in an overwhelming economic advantage.James M.TIEN 2011Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2011,20,2:15
16INTERRELATIONSHIPS AMONG NONCOOPERATIVE AND COALITION STABILITY CONCEPTS显示文摘Insightful theorems are established on interrelationships among coalition and noncooperative stability concepts defined within the paradigm of the Graph Model for Conflict Resolution.More specifically,the newly defined coalition stability definitions that are considered are coalition Nash stability(CNash),coalition general metarationality(CGMR),coalition symmetric metarationality (CSMR)and coalition sequential stability(CSEQ),along with their earlier-defined noncooperative versions.A range of interesting new theorems are derived to establish connections among these coalition stability concepts as well as between noncooperative and coalition stability definitions. 19A PRICE-SETTING NEWSVENDOR MODEL UNDER CVAR DECISION CRITERION WITH EMERGENCY PROCUREMENT显示文摘In this paper,we consider a newsvendor model in which a risk-averse manager faces a stochastic price-dependent demand in either an additive or a multiplicative form.An emergency purchase option is allowed after the realization of demand to satisfy the units that are short.By adopting conditional value-at-risk(CVaR) as the decision criterion,we aim to investigate the optimal pricing and ordering decisions,and the effects of parameter changes in such a setting.We provide sufficient conditions for the uniqueness of the optimal policy for both demand models.We perform comparative statics analysis to show how the optimal pricing and ordering decision behaves when changing parameters.We also compare our results with those of the newsvendor with a general utility function and with CVaR criterion under lost sales assumption.Our key results include:(i) For both demand models,the optimal selling price is decreasing in risk aversion.Hence,the optimal price of a risk-averse newsvendor is not greater than the optimal price of a risk-neutral newsvendor.(ii) In contrary to the lost sales case,for the multiplicative demand model,the optimal order quantity may not be monotonic in risk aversion. Consequently,the optimal risk-averse order quantity may be lower or higher than the optimal risk-neutral counterpart.(iii) For the additive model,the optimal order quantity is strictly increasing in the emergency purchase price,while for the multiplicative model the optimal order quantity has no such a monotonic property.Some numerical examples are conducted to verify our claims and gain more insights about the risk-averse decision-making behaviors.Minghui XU School of Economics and Management,Wuhan University,Wuhan 430072,China 2010Journal of Systems Science and Systems Engineering2010,19,1:12
