Constitutive model for overconsolidated clays显示文摘Based on the relationships between the Hvorslev envelope, the current yield sur-face and the reference yield surface,a new constitutive model for overconsolidated clays is proposed. It adopts the unified hardening parameter,to which the potential failure stress ratio and the characteristic state stress ratio are introduced. The model can describe many characteristics of overconsolidated clays, including stress-strain relationships, strain hardening and softening, stress dilatancy, and stress path dependency. Compared with the Cam-clay model, the model only re-quires one additional soil parameter which is the slope of the Hvorslev envelope. Comparisons with data from triaxial drained compression tests for Fujinomori clay show that the proposed model can rationally describe overconsolidated properties. In addition, the model is also used to predict the stress-strain relationship in the isotropic consolidation condition and the stress paths in the undrained triaxial compression tests.YAO YangPing HOU Wei ZHOU AnNan 2008Science China(Technological Sciences)2008,51,2:13
Photodegradation of dye pollutants on TiO_2 pillared bentonites under UV light irradiation显示文摘TiO2 pillared bentonite samples dried under different conditions are used to degrade 2,4-dichlorophenol and orange II under UV light irradiation. The supercritical dried sample exhibits a high activity for the photodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol and orange II due to its structural features. TOC and COD are measured during the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol under UV light irradiation using P25 and TiO2 pillared bentonite samples dried under different conditions. The clay-based catalysts can be readily separated by filtration or sedimentation.李静谊 朱怀勇 丁哲 陈春城 赵进才 2002Science China Chemistry2002,45,4:7
Pre-Failure Behavior of Deep-Situated Osaka Clay显示文摘Great interest has been aroused on deeply-situated Osaka clay since Kobe Earthquake in1994.In this paper is presented the analysis on the results of a series of lab tests on Osaka clay situatedfrom 100m to 1500m under the ground. The wave velocity method, bender element method,LDT and theformula derived by the authors are used, focus is put on the pre-failure mechanical behavior of the clay. The analysis shows that,(i)pore-pressure coefficient B is less than 1.0,(ii)the relationship between shearmodulus and Poisson's ratio is not in agreement with that reported before,(iii)the modulus measured withLDT is still less than that measured with bender element method, and(iv)there are two threshold strains, within which the clay can be considered as elastic, and both of them are larger than that reported before.T.HONGO M.FUKUDA T.ADACHI F.OKA 1998China Ocean Engineering1998,13,4:5
A new method of developing elastic-plastic-viscous constitutive model for clays显示文摘A new method is presented to develop the existing elastic-plastic constitutive model into an elastic-plastic-viscous one for clays. The actual loading process is divided into an instant process and a delayed process denoting the elastic-plastic strain and viscous strain, respectively. The elastic-plastic strain is determined by either an elastic-plastic model for overconsolidated clays or an improved model based on the elastic-plastic model for normally consolidated clays. In order to calculate viscous strain, a reference state line is defined based on the actual loading path. Combining the reference state line, an existing elastic-plastic model can be conveniently developed into an elastic-plastic-viscous model. Furthermore, using the proposed method, the modified cam clay model is extended into an elastic-plastic-viscous model. Comparisons with test results demonstrate that the extended model can capture the main time-dependent behaviours of clays, including creep, stress relaxation and strain rate effects.LU DeChun MIAO JinBo DU XiuLi LIANG JingYu 2020Science China(Technological Sciences)2020,63,2:3
Intelligent modelling of clay compressibility using hybrid meta-heuristic and machine learning algorithms显示文摘Compression index Ccis an essential parameter in geotechnical design for which the effectiveness of correlation is still a challenge. This paper suggests a novel modelling approach using machine learning(ML)technique. The performance of five commonly used machine learning(ML)algorithms,i.e.back-propagation neural network(BPNN),extreme learning machine(ELM),support vector machine(SVM),random forest(RF)and evolutionary polynomial regression(EPR)in predicting Cc is comprehensively investigated.A database with a total number of 311 datasets including three input variables,i.e.initial void ratio e0,liquid limit water content wL,plasticity index Ip,and one output variable Cc is first established.Genetic algorithm(GA)is used to optimize the hyper-parameters in five ML algorithms, and the average prediction error for the 10-fold cross-validation(CV)sets is set as thefitness function in the GA for enhancing the robustness of ML models. The results indicate that ML models outperform empirical prediction formulations with lower prediction error.RF yields the lowest error followed by BPNN,ELM,EPR and SVM.If the ranges of input variables in the database are large enough,BPNN and RF models are recommended to predict Cc.Furthermore,if the distribution of input variables is continuous,RF model is the best one.Otherwise,EPR model is recommended if the ranges of input variables are small. The predicted correlations between input and output variables using five ML models show great agreement with the physical explanation.Pin Zhang Zhen-Yu Yin Yin-Fu Jin Tommy HTChan Fu-Ping Gao 2021Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,1:3
Optimized functional linked neural network for predicting diaphragm wall deflection induced by braced excavations in clays显示文摘Deep excavation during the construction of underground systems can cause movement on the ground, especially in soft clay layers. At high levels, excessive ground movements can lead to severe damage to adjacent structures. In this study, finite element analyses(FEM)and the hardening small strain(HSS)model were performed to investigate the deflection of the diaphragm wall in the soft clay layer induced by braced excavations.Different geometric and mechanical properties of the wall were investigated to study the deflection behavior of the wall in soft clays.Accordingly,1090 hypothetical cases were surveyed and simulated based on the HSS model and FEM to evaluate the wall deflection behavior. The results were then used to develop an intelligent model for predicting wall deflection using the functional linked neural network(FLNN)with different functional expansions and activation functions.Although the FLNN is a novel approach to predict wall deflection;however,in order to improve the accuracy of the FLNN model in predicting wall deflection, three swarm-based optimization algorithms, such as artificial bee colony(ABC),Harris’s hawk’s optimization(HHO),and hunger games search(HGS),were hybridized to the FLNN model to generate three novel intelligent models, namely ABC-FLNN,HHO-FLNN,HGS-FLNN.The results of the hybrid models were then compared with the basic FLNN and MLP models. They revealed that FLNN is a good solution for predicting wall deflection, and the application of different functional expansions and activation functions has a significant effect on the outcome predictions of the wall deflection. It is remarkably interesting that the performance of the FLNN model was better than the MLP model with a mean absolute error(MAE)of 19.971,root-mean-squared error(RMSE)of 24.574,and determination coefficient(R^(2))of 0.878.Meanwhile,the performance of the MLP model only obtained an MAE of 20.321,RMSE of 27.091,and R^(2)of 0.851.Furthermore,the results also indicated that the proposed hybrid models,i.e.,ABC-FLNN,HHO-FLNN,HGS-FLNN,yielded more superior performances than those of the FLNN and MLP models in terms of the prediction of deflection behavior of diaphragm walls with an MAE in the range of 11.877 to 12.239,RMSE in the range of 15.821 to 16.045,and R^(2)in the range of 0.949 to 0.951.They can be used as an alternative tool to simulate diaphragm wall deflections under different conditions with a high degree of accuracy.Chengyu Xie Hoang Nguyen Yosoon Choi Danial Jahed Armaghani 2022Geoscience Frontiers2022,13,2:3
THE STEPWISE EXCHANGE ACTION AND STERIC HINDRANCE EFFECT OF ORGANIC PHENOLS ON CLAYS IN SEAWATER显示文摘The exchange action of six types of organic phenols on clay surfaces in seawater is systematically studied in this work. The following significant conclusions are drawn from the experiments. (1) The interaction of organic phenols with montmorillonite, illite and kaolinite in seawater is monovalent anion exchage.(2) Their isotherms of stepwise exchage on clay surfaces belong to the Langmuir type or stepwise type.(3) The discovery of the'steric hindrance effects of stepwise exchange of organic phenols on clays surfaces', and revelation of an exchange mechanisrn diffeient from that in references are the greatest achieverments in this work.杨桂朋 张正斌 1994Chinese Journal of Oceanology and Limnology1994,12,1:3
Improved prediction of clay soil expansion using machine learning algorithms and meta-heuristic dichotomous ensemble classifiers显示文摘Soil swelling-related disaster is considered as one of the most devastating geo-hazards in modern history.Hence, proper determination of a soil’s ability to expand is very vital for achieving a secure and safe ground for infrastructures.Accordingly, this study has provided a novel and intelligent approach that enables an improved estimation of swelling by using kernelised machines(Bayesian linear regression(BLR)&bayes point machine(BPM)support vector machine(SVM)and deep-support vector machine(D-SVM));(multiple linear regressor(REG),logistic regressor(LR)and artificial neural network(ANN)),tree-based algorithms such as decision forest(RDF)&boosted trees(BDT).Also, and for the first time,meta-heuristic classifiers incorporating the techniques of voting(VE)and stacking(SE)were utilised.Different independent scenarios of explanatory features’combination that influence soil behaviour in swelling were investigated.Preliminary results indicated BLR as possessing the highest amount of deviation from the predictor variable(the actual swell-strain).REG and BLR performed slightly better than ANN while the meta-heuristic learners(VE and SE)produced the best overall performance(greatest R2 value of 0.94 and RMSE of 0.06%exhibited by VE).CEC,plasticity index and moisture content were the features considered to have the highest level of importance.Kernelized binary classifiers(SVM,D-SVM and BPM)gave better accuracy(average accuracy and recall rate of 0.93 and 0.60)compared to ANN,LR and RDF.Sensitivity-driven diagnostic test indicated that the meta-heuristic models’best performance occurred when ML training was conducted using k-fold validation technique. Finally,it is recommended that the concepts developed herein be deployed during the preliminary phases of a geotechnical or geological site characterisation by using the best performing meta-heuristic models via their background coding resource.E.U.Eyo S.J.Abbey T.T.Lawrence F.K.Tetteh 2022Geoscience Frontiers2022,13,1:1
The role of fluid polarity in the swelling of sodium-montmorillonite clay:A molecular dynamics and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy study显示文摘Swelling clays are found extensively in various parts of the world, and sodium-montmorillonite(NaMMT) is the main constituent of an expansive clay mineral. In this work, the swelling behavior of NaMMT clay with a wide range of organic fluids, high polar through low polar fluids, is studied using a combination of Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) technique and molecular dynamics(MD) simulations. The construction of the representative clayefluid models is carried out, and the nature of nonbonded interactions between clay and fluids is studied using MD. Our FTIR and MD simulations results suggest the significant nonbonded interactions between Na-MMT clay and polar fluids, such as formamide and water. The nonbonded interactions of Na-MMT with methanol and acetone are significantly less than those in Na-MMT with polar fluids. The interactions of the fluids with various entities of the clay such as Sie O, Fee OH, Mge OH, and Ale OH captured via the spectroscopy experiments and modeling provide a finer understanding of the interactions and their contributions to swelling. The MD simulations are able to capture the band shifts observed in the spectra obtained in the spectroscopy experiments. This work also captures the conformations of interlayer sodium ions with formamide, water, methanol, and acetone during swelling. These nonbonded interactions provide insight into the molecular mechanism that the polarity of fluids plays an important role in the initiation of interlayer swelling, alteration in the orientations, and evolution of microstructure of swelling clays at the molecular scale.Dinesh R.Katti Keshab B.Thapa Kalpana S.Katti 2018Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2018,10,6:1
A critical state based thermo-elasto-plastic constitutive model for structured clays显示文摘In this paper, a critical state based thermo-elasto-plastic constitutive model is developed for destructured, naturally structured and artificially structured saturated clays. The model is an extension of the previously developed thermo-mechanical model by the authors for saturated clays, considering the effects of structure on the mechanical behaviors of the soil. It is based on change in the position of normal consolidation line(NCL) in a compression plane(e-ln p′) due to the soil's structure and variation of temperature. The present model is able to simulate the mechanical behavior of structured saturated clays in a triaxial plane at elevated temperatures lower than the boiling point of water. An attempt has been made to use the lowest possible number of parameters compared with that of Came Clay model and to ensure that these new parameters have clear physical interpretations. The sufficiency of the model was verified by the test results on artificially and naturally structured soils using thermal triaxial tests.Amir Hamidi Saeed Tourchi Fatemeh Kardooni 2017Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2017,9,6:1

Ceria-Modified Clay Supported Palladium Catalysts for Complete Oxidation of Volatile Organic Compounds显示文摘Ceria- and alumina-pillared interlayered clays were synthesized in the presence of PEO surfactant by using laponite clay as raw material. And the synthesized pillared clays were used as supports to load palladium catalysts for complete oxidation of benzene.Nitrogen adsorption/desorption experiments reveal that the pillared clays have higher tests show that ceria pillar exhibited promoting effect on the activity of the palladium catalysts, and ceria-pillared clay supported palladium catalyst catalyzed the complete oxidation of benzene at less than 250 ℃.The calcination temperature affects the activity of the catalysts significantly, and it is found that the optimal calcination temperature are 600 and 400 ℃ for ceria- and alumina-pillared clay supported palladium catalysts, respectively.Li Jinjun Hao Zhengping Hu Chun 2004Journal of Rare Earths2004,22,z1:0

Combined Bearing Capacity of Spudcans on a Double Layer Deposit of Strong-Over-Weak Clays显示文摘An extreme sea storm process can lead to a jack-up rig under the combined loading condition of vertical load(V), horizontal load(H), and moment(M) to have stability problems. This paper presents the analysis of combined bearing capacities of a circular spudcan on layered clays with a strong layer overlying a comparatively weaker layer. Numerical models combined with displacement-based load tests, swipe tests, and constant ratio displacement probe tests are adopted to calculate the uniaxial bearing capacities, failure envelopes in combined V-H, V-M planes, and failure envelopes in a combined V-H-M load space, respectively. A parametric study on the effects of vertical load level V, the layer strength ratio s_(u,t)/s_(u,b), and the hard layer thickness t_1 on the bearing capacities is then performed. Results show that the vertical load level is a key factor that influences the values of H and M and the size of the H-M failure envelope. The existence of the underlying weak clay decreases the bearing capacities in all directions, and the vertical capacity Vult is affected more than the horizontal(H_(ult)) and moment(M_(ult)) capacities based on a single uniform deposit. The influence of the underlying weak clay on H-M failure envelope is mainly shown where H and M are coupled in the same direction. In contrast, little difference is observed when H and M are coupled in opposite directions.YIN Qilin DONG Sheng 2019Journal of Ocean University of China2019,18,1:0
Trace elemental signatures and mineral chemistry of clays associated with the alteration halos of the Paleoproterozoic U mineralization in Bijawars of the Sonrai Basin,Central India显示文摘Paleoproterozoic Bijawars of the Sonrai basin consists of(a) Sonrai(mostly carbonate carbonaceous shale and phosphatic breccia) and(b) Solda Formations(commonly chloritic and ferruginous shale) with well-developed clay-organo-rich facies, often marked with hydrothermal activities.Previous studies revealed abundance order of kaolinite> chlorite> illite> smectite;and kaolinite> illite> chlorite in clay(0.2-2.0 μm) fractions separated from the Sonrai and Solda Formations, respectively. To understand atomic substitutions and trace elemental concentrations, clay minerals were analyzed by fusion ICPMS and SEM-EDS.PAAS normalized data plots show U,Th,Rb,Ba,Pb Sr,and large-ion lithophiles enrichment, whereas,Bandai sandstone and Rohini carbonate clays show HREE enrichment with asymmetrical patterns, similar to those reported from the well-established McArthur River,Cigar Lake, and Sue UTUD of Canada. For Rohni carbonate,chondrite-normalized REE data plots revealed M shape REE patterns, ascribed to Gd-Tb-Dy-Ho tetrad effect and anomalous Y,Zr,and Hf concentrations.Owing to HREE incorporation in the clay inter-layers,linear and flattened REE trends were noticed.Flat REE patterns associated with the highly altered chlorite and illite represent negative Eu anomaly related to the dilational nature of the uraninite structure and is suggestive of anoxic conditions.Surendra Kumar Jha Rashmi Sharma Jaya Prakash Shrivastava 2020Acta Geochimica2020,39,3:0
An improved damaging model for structured clays显示文摘An improved damaging model formulated within the framework of bounding surface for structured clays was proposed. The model was intended to describe the effects of structure degradation due to geotechnical loading. The predictive capability of the model was compared with those of triaxial compression test on Tianjin soft clays. The results show that, by incorporating a new damage function into the model, the reduction of elastic bulk and shear modulus with elastic deformations and the reduction of plastic bulk modulus and shear modulus with plastic deformations are able to be appreciable. Before the axial strain reaches 15%, the axial strain computed from the model is smaller than that from the test under the drained condition. Under the undrained condition, after the axial strain reaches 1%, the axial strain increases quickly because of the complete loss of structure and stiffness; and the result computed from the model is nearly equal to that from the model without the incorporation of the damage function due to less plastic strain under undrained condition test.姜岩 雷华阳 郑刚 徐舜华 2008Journal of Central South University2008,15,S2:0
