| 1 | Zebrafish as a possible bioindicator of organic pollutants with effects on reproduction in drinking waters显示文摘Organic contaminants can be detected at low concentrations in drinking water, raising concerns for human health, particularly in reproduction. In this respect, we attempted to use the zebrafish as a bioindicator to detect the possible presence of these substances in drinking water, aiming to define the most relevant parameters to detect these substances, which particularly affect the development and reproduction of zebrafish. To this end, batches of30 embryos with the chorion intact were cultured in drinking waters from different sources,throughout their full life-cycle up to 5 months, in 20 L tanks. Six replicates were performed in all water groups, with a total of 24 aquariums. Two generations(F0 and F1) were studied and the following parameters were tested: in the F0 generation, survival and abnormality rates evaluated at 5 dpf(days post-fertilization) and at 5 mpf(months post-fertilization),the onset of spawning and the fertility rate from 3 mpf to 5 mpf, and the sex ratio and underdeveloped specimens at 5 mpf. Furthermore, in the F0 offspring(F1), survival and abnormality rates were evaluated at 5 dpf and the hatching rate at 72 hpf. These results revealed that the hatching rate is the most sensitive parameter to distinguish different levels of effects between waters during the early life stages, whereas the rate of underdeveloped specimens is more suitable at later life stages. Regarding adult reproduction, fertility rate was the most sensitive parameter. | 2 | Disruption of iron homeostasis and resultant health effects upon exposure to various environmental pollutants:A critical review显示文摘Environmental pollution has become one of the greatest problems in the world, and the concerns about environmental pollutants released by human activities from agriculture and industrial production have been continuously increasing. Although intense efforts have been made to understand the health effects of environmental pollutants, most studies have only focused on direct toxic effects and failed to simultaneously evaluate the long-term adaptive, compensatory and secondary impacts on health. Burgeoning evidence suggests that environmental pollutants may directly or indirectly give rise to disordered element homeostasis, such as for iron. It is crucially important to maintain concerted cellular and systemic iron metabolism. Otherwise, disordered iron metabolism would lead to cytotoxicity and increased risk for various diseases, including cancers. Thus, study on the effects of environmental pollutants upon iron homeostasis is urgently needed. In this review, we recapitulate the available findings on the direct or indirect impacts of environmental pollutants, including persistent organic pollutants(POPs), heavy metals and pesticides, on iron homeostasis and associated adverse health problems. | 3 | Plasma concentrations of chlorinated persistent organic pollutants and their predictors in the general population of Algiers, Algeria显示文摘Background:Persistent organic pollutants(POPs)are subject of particular attention and in-depth studies which demonstrate their toxicity towards humans and biotope in general.POPs are therefore addressed by the Stockholm Convention globally with human milk or blood as matrix for effectiveness evaluation.Objectives:The objective of this study was to assess plasma concentrations of certain chlorinated POPs in subjects from the urban population in Algiers.Methods:A total number of 207 adult subjects were recruited in Algiers and plasma concentrations of Hexachlorobenzene(HCB),p,p’Dichlorodiphenyl DichloroEthylene(4,40 DDE)and Polychlorinated Biphenyls(PCBs)were determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry detection(GC-MS).Results:The nanogram per gram of lipids(ng g^(-1) lipids)geometric means of plasma concentrations of studied compounds were:6.09 for HCB,131.60 for 4,40 DDE,8.61 for PCB153,7.95 for PCB138 and 8.39 for PCB180.PCB 180,PCB 153 and PCB 138 showed a high correlation with each other(r>0.5).4,40 DDE concentrations were significantly higher in women and in subject with low educational level,whereas POPs were higher in older participants(>65 years old).Organochlorine pesticides(OCPs)and PCB153 concentrations were higher in overweight and obese subjects.There was no significant difference between POPs concentrations according to breastfeeding history,smoking status or fish consumption.Conclusions:Chlorinated POPs were detected in the blood plasma of adults living in Algiers.Plasma concentrations were consistent with those of several studies in the world.However,further investigations are needed to assess the exposure profile of subjects living near contaminated sites. | El Hadia Mansouri Mohamed Reggabi | 2021 | Emerging Contaminants2021,7,1: | 1 |
