1Effects of gaps on regeneration of woody plants: a meta-analysis显示文摘Forest gaps, openings in the canopy caused by death of one or more trees, have a profound effect on forest regeneration and drive the forest growth cycle. It is therefore necessary to understand the effects of forest gaps on regeneration for modern forest management. In order to provide a quantitative assessment of the effects of forest gaps on regeneration of woody plants, we conducted this review of gap effects on woody plant regeneration on the basis of 527 observations from 42 individual papers, and reported the results of these data in a meta-analysis. Overall, densities of regenerated woody plants were significantly greater(359%) in forest gaps than on the closed-canopy forest floor. The regeneration density in gaps of plantation forests was significantly greater(P < 0.05) than that of natural forest because the regeneration in gaps of plantation forests was improved by both gap effects and experimental measures. Similarly, in comparison to natural gaps, regeneration was better enhanced in artificial gaps. Regeneration density exhibited a significantly positive correlation with gap size, but a negative correlation with gap age because the gap size decreased with increasing gap age. Shade tolerance of woody plants affected regeneration density in gaps and understory. Average regeneration density of shade-tolerant species exhibited a significantly positive response to gaps but densities remained lower in total than those of intermediate and shade-intolerant species. Gap effects on regeneration decreased in response to increasing temperature and precipitation because of the limiting effects of lower temperature and moisture on woody plant regeneration. In summary, forest gaps enhance woody plant regeneration, and the effects of gaps varied by forest type, gap characteristics, environmental factors and plant traits. The results of this meta-analysis are useful for better understanding the effects and roles of gaps on forest regeneration and forest management.Jiaojun Zhu Deliang Lu Weidong Zhang 2014Journal of Forestry Research2014,25,3:15
2Recycling organic waste in managed tropical forest ecosystems:effects of arboreal litter types on soil chemical properties in Abeokuta, southwestern Nigeria显示文摘The aim of this study is to determine the influence of tree litters on soil nutrients in a managed forest in southwestern Nigeria.Mono species tree clusters consisted of indigenous species:Gmelina arborea,Tectona grandis,Leucaena leucocephala,Bambusa vulgaris,Treculia africana,Anogeissus leiocarpus were selected and analyzed for their litter and soil chemical properties at 0–5 and 15–30 cm.T.africana and T.grandis litters have the highest nutrients, while L.leucocephala and A.leiocarpus are the lowest.Soils under G.arborea,T.africana,and A.leiocarpus are more acidic due to lower calcium and magnesium contents but have higher manganese and sulphur levels.Tree litters improved soil nitrogen, phosphorous, and micro-nutrients but depleted potassium.Litter lignin and carbon appeared to hinder the release of some nutrients.Nitrogen, potassium and copper are concentrated in the topsoil while others nutrients are not differentiated with soil depth. There is a positive correlation between litter chemistry and soil chemical properties. It was concluded that tree litter chemistry differs according to species but determines soil reaction and nutrient content. The magnitude of the effect on soil properties is related to the quality of the organic litters.J.O.Azeez 2019Journal of Forestry Research2019,30,5:1
3The forecast of fire impact on Pinus sylvestris renewal in southwestern Siberia显示文摘Simulation of fire impact on forest floor renewal in pine forests was based on predictions for 2100 by the Canadian Climate Centre for increase in temperatures of by4.5℃and total precipitation by 14%in the West Siberian pre-forest-steppes and empirical regression relationships between them and the degree of burnt forest floor,as well as amount of Pinus sylvestris L.regeneration.It was predicted that by 2100,pine regeneration on fire prone sites under the canopy of the dominant forest type will increase by 29-54%compared to the 1980 s but on adjacent open sites, regeneration will decrease twice as much. This means that the regeneration potential and pine population stability in pre-forest-steppes will become as poor as it is today.Stanislav NSannikov Nelly SSannikova Irina VPetrova Olga E.Cherepanova 2021Journal of Forestry Research2021,32,5:0
4Assessment of early survival and growth of planted Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris) seedlings under extreme continental climate conditions of northern Mongolia显示文摘Environmental factors play vital roles in successful plantation and cultivation of tree seedlings. This study focuses on problems associated with reforestation under extreme continental climatic conditions. The objectives were to assess relative seedling performance(survival and growth)with respect to plantation age,and to analyze the influence of specific climatic factors during the early stages of Scots pine(Pinus sylvestris L.)plantations.The study was carried out in reforested areas of the Tujyin Nars region of northern Mongolia on six Scots pine plantations ranging from 5 to 10 years. In each of the six plantations, five 900 m^2 permanent sample plots were established and survival rates and growth performance measured annually over 7 years. Results show high variation in survival among the plantations(p<0.001,F=29.7).Seedling survival in the first year corresponded directly to the number of dry days in May.However, survival rate appeared to stabilize after the second year. The insignificant variation of height categories throughout the observation period indicated low competition among individuals. Two linear mixed-effect models show that height and radial growth were best explained by relative air humidity, which we consider to be a reliable indicator of site-specific water availability.Insufficient amounts and uneven distribution of rainfall pose a major threat during the first year of plantation establishment.Humidity and water availability are decisive factors for a successful seedling plantation. This highlights the impact of drought on forest plantations in northern Mongolia and the importance of developing climate resilient reforestation strategies.Gerelbaatar Sukhbaatar Batsaikhan Ganbaatar Tsogtbaatar Jamsran Battulga Purevragchaa Baatarbileg Nachin Alexander Gradel Tao Xu 2020Journal of Forestry Research2020,31,1:0
