MHC II DRB variation and trans-species polymorphism in the golden snub-nosed monkey(Rhinopithecus roxellana)显示文摘Genetic variation is generally believed to be important in studying endangered species' adaptive potential.Early studies assessed genetic diversity using nearly neutral markers, such as microsatellite loci and mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA),which are very informative for phylogenetic and phylogeographic reconstructions. However, the variation at these loci cannot provide direct information on selective processes involving the interaction of individuals with their environment,or on the capability to resist continuously evolving pathogens and parasites. The importance of genetic diversity at informative adaptive markers, such as major histocompatibility complex(MHC) genes,is increasingly being realized, especially in endangered, isolated species.Small population size and isolation make the golden snub-nosed monkey(Rhinopithecus roxellana) particularly susceptible to genetic variation losses through inbreeding and restricted gene flow.In this study,we compared the genetic variation and population structure of microsatellites,mtDNA,and the most relevant adaptive region of the MHC II-DRB genes in the golden snub-nosed monkey. We examined three Chinese R.roxellana populations and found the same variation patterns in all gene regions, with the population from Shennongjia population,Hubei Province, showing the lowest polymorphism among three populations.Genetic drift that outweighed balancing selection and the founder effect in these populations may explain the similar genetic variation pattern found in these neutral and adaptive genes. | LUO MaoFang PAN HuiJuan | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17: | 5
Molecular demographic history of the Hainan Peacock Pheasant(Polyplectron katsumatae) and its conservation implications显示文摘Knowledge of the historical responses of animal species to climate changes is critical for understanding their evolutionary history and conservation.During the late Quaternary period,Southeast Asia had a larger land area than today due to lower sea levels, and its terrestrial landscape was covered by extensive forests and savannah. To date, however, the general fluctuations in landscape distribution and their impacts on the demographics history of native species during the late Quaternary periods are still disputed.Specifically, the responses of animals on Hainan Island, which is located in the northernmost region of Southeast Asia,to historical climate changes, are poorly understood. Here,we performed a series of demographic analyses based on mitochondrial DNA genes to examine the response of the resident Hainan Peacock Pheasant(Polyplectron katsumatae) to climate change.Unlike the pattern of population collapse during the ice age and expansion during the warming period,we detected a historical expansion pattern in the demographic history of Hainan Peacock Pheasant through the late Quaternary period. It was concluded that the Hainan Peacock Pheasant survived through the late Quaternary periods, despite of its currently limited distribution and population size on Hainan Island.Anthropogenic influences must be considered in conservation planning due to their impacts on currently fragmented habitats and populations. | CHANG Jiang CHEN De LIANG Wei LI Ming ZHANG ZhengWang | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17: | 2
Special Topic on Conservation Biology of Endangered Wildlife pushes conservation studies显示文摘In recent years Chinese Science Bulletin has published some work focused on environment, biodiversity and sustainability,etc.[1-10].This has promoted the follow-up and indepth research efforts, and to some extent, has accelerated the development of conservation studies on endangered animals and plants. | FANG ShengGuo ZHU Ying | 2012 | Chinese Science Bulletin2012,57,36: | 2
Editor's note显示文摘Biodiversity is abundant in China, but human activities have endangered many species, reducing numbers to the brink of extinction [1].The Chinese government has increased financial funding for various conservation projects over the past decade, but although every biological conservation study | FANG ShengGuo | 2013 | Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,17: | 1
