Diabetes mellitus:An overview on its pharmacological aspects and reported medicinal plants having antidiabetic activity显示文摘Diabetes mellitus is not a single disease but is a group of metabolic disorders affecting a huge numlier of population in the world. It is mainly characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, resulting from defects in insulin secretion or insulin action. It is predicated that the number of diabetes person in the world could reach upto 366 million by the year 2030.Even though the cases of diabetes are increasing day by day, except insulin and oral hypoglycemic drugs no other way of treatment has been successfully developed so far. Thus, the objective of the present review is to provide an insight over the pathophysiological and etiological aspects of diabetes mellitus along with the remedies available for this metabolic disorder. The review also contains brief idea about diabetes mellitus and the experimental screening model with their relevant mechanism and significance mainly used nowadays.Alloxan and streptozotocin are mainly used for evaluating the antidiabetic activity of a particular drug. This review contain list of medicinal plants which have been tested for their antidiabetic activity in the alloxan induced diabetic rat model. From the available data in the literature,it was found that plant having antidiabetic activity is mainly due to the presence of the secondary metabolite. Thus, the information provided in this review will help the researchers for the development of an alternative methods rather than insidin and oral hypoglycemic agents for the treatment of diabetes niellitus, which will minimize the complication associated with the diabetes and related disorder.Patel DK Kumar R Laloo D Hemalatha S 2012Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2012,2,5:17
Antihyperglycemic and antioxidant effects of Solanum xanthocarpum leaves(field grown & in vitro raised) extracts on alloxan induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate antidiabetic efficacy of the extract of field grown and in vitro raised leaves of Solanum xanthocarpum(S.xanthocarpum) against alloxan induced diabetic rats. Methods:The antidiabetic activity of the crude methanol extracts of the field grown and in vitro raised leaves of S.xanthocarpum at different concentrations(100-200 mg/kg bw) was tested against alloxan induced diabetic rats. The antidiabetic efficacy was validated through various biochemical parameters and the antioxidant effect was also determined. The phytochemical analyses of field grown S.xanthocarpum and in vitro rasied 5.xanthocarpum leaves were done by estimating their chlorophyll, carotenoids, total sugar, protein, amino acid and minerals contents. Results:The results revealed that the methanol extracts of both the leaves(field grown and in vitro raised) of S.xanthocarpum was efficient anti hyperglycemic agents at a concentration of 200 mg/kg bw and posses potent antioxidant activity. However, the extracts of in vitro rasied S.xanthocarpum raised leaves exhibit higher efficacy than the field grown leaves in all tested concentrations.Proximal composition and mineral analysis of S.xanthocarpum revealed higher concentration of contents in in vitro rasied S.xanthocarpum than field grown S.xanthocarpum. Conclusions:From the results it can be concluded that the leaves extracts of S.xanthocarpum can be a potential candidate in treating the hyperglycemic conditions and suits to be an agent to reduce oxidative stress.K Poongothai P Ponmurugan K Syed Zameer Ahmed B Senthil Kumar SA Sheriff 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,10:9
Antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant potential of methanol extract of Tectona grandis flowers in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate antidiabetic, antihyperlipidemic and antioxidant activity of methanol extract of Tectona grandis(T.grandis) flowers(METGF) in streplozotocin(STZ) induced diabetic rats to supports its traditional use. Methods:Acute toxicity study of METGF was carried out in rat to determine its dose for the antidiabetic study.Oral glucose tolerance test(OGTT) was performed to evaluate METGF effect on elevated blood glucose level.Diabetes was induced in rats by administration of STZ(60 mg/kg,ip.) and it was confirmed 72 h after induction.METGF was orally given to the diabetic rats up to 28 days and blood glucose level were estimated each week.On 28 day of the experiment, diabetic rats were sacrificed after the blood collection for the biochemical parameters analysis and liver, kidney was collected to determine antioxidants levels. Results: In acute toxicity,METGF did not show toxicity and death up to a dose 2 000 mg/kg in rats. Administration of METGF 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly(P<0.001) reduced blood glucose levels in OGTT and STZ-induced diabetic rats. Both doses of METGF treatment significantly(P<0.001, P<0.01 and P<0.05) increased body weight, serum insulin, haemoglobin(Hb) and total protein levels in diabetic rats. Also,MEGTF treatment reduced elevated glycosylated haemoglobin(HbA1c) and other biochemical parameters levels significantly(P<0.001) in diabetic rats.Altered lipid profiles and antioxidants levels were reversed to near normal in diabetic rats treated with METGF. Conclusions:These results concluded that METGF possesses antidiabetic, antihyperglycemic and antioxidant activity which supports its traditional use.Subramaniani Ramachandran Aiyalu Rajasekaran KT Manisenthil Kumar 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,8:7

Antidiabetic, hypolipidemic and histopathological analysis of Dillenia indica (L.) leaves extract on alloxan induced diabetic rats显示文摘Objective:To investigate antidiabetic, hypolipidemic histopathological analysis of Dillenia indica(D.indica) methanolic leaves(DIME) extract in alloxan induced diabetic rat by administering oral doses(250 and 500 mg/kg body weight). Methods:Blood glucose levels were measured using blood glucose test strips with elegance glucometer on weekly intervals till the end of study(i.e.3 weeks).Other parameters e.g.liver profile, renal profile and total lipid levels were determined in normal and alloxan induced diabetic rats after oral administration of the extract for 21 days.Histopathological changes in diabetic rat organs(pancreas, liver and kidney) were also observed after extract treatment Results:Daily oral administration DIME(250 and 500 mg/kg body weight) and glibenclamide(10 mg/kg) showed beneficial effects on blood glucose level (P<0.001) as well as improving kidney, liver functions and hyperlipidaemia due to diabetes. The extract treatment also showed to enhanced serum insulin level and body weight of diabetic rats as compared to diabetic control group.Furthermore, the extract has a favorable effect on the histopathological changes of the pancreas, liver and kidney in alloxan induced diabetes. Conclusions:D.indica possess antidiabetic property as well improve body weight, liver profile, renal profile and total lipid levels.DIME has also favorable effect to inhibit the histopathological changes of the pancreas and kidney in alloxan induced diabetes.Sunil Kumar Vipin Kumar Om Prakash 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,5:4
Byrsocarpus coccineus Schumach.&Thonn.(Connaraceae)叶子提取物的降血糖和抗氧化活性(英文)显示文摘AIM: Diabetes Mellitus is associated with significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. The need for enhanced efficacy and safety, and cheaper and more readily available new drugs has increased the search for new antidiabetic drugs from plants. This study was conducted to investigate the antidiabetic activity of the hydroethanolic leaf extract of B. coccineus in rats. METHODS: The effect of B. coccineus extract(100–800 mg·kg–1, p.o.) on blood glucose levels in normal and glucose loaded rats, and alloxan-induced diabetic rats was determined. After 10 days of treatment, blood samples were collected from rats for lipid and insulin profiling. Animals were thereafter sacrificed and the kidneys, heart, and liver were harvested for antioxidant indices assay. RESULTS: In normal rats, B. coccineus did not cause significant reduction in blood glucose. At the dose of 800 mg·kg–1, significant increase in blood glucose level was not observed 30 min. after glucose load. B. coccineus administered acutely did not generally produce significant reduction in blood glucose level in diabetic rats. Administered subacutely, the extract significantly reduced blood glucose level in diabetic rats from the 3rdday with peak effect observed at the dose of 800 mg·kg–1on the 10thday. The extract generally preserved in vivo antioxidant levels in the kidneys, heart, and liver, increased the level of high density lipoprotein and insulin, and reduced the level of triglycerides and low density lipoprotein compared to diabetic control. CONCLUSION: The findings in this study suggest that the hydroethanolic leaf extract Byrsocarpus coccineus possesses antidiabetic activity possibly mediated through inhibition of intestinal glucose absorption, in vivo antioxidant activity, and enhancement of regeneration of beta cells of the pancreas and insulin secretion.Oluwakemi K.Dada Abidemi J.Akindele Olufemi A.Morakinyo Margaret O.Sofidiya Duncan Ota 2013中国天然药物2013,11,6:0
