Three-dimensional simulations of strong ground motion in the Shidian basin based upon the spectral-element method显示文摘The strong motion of a small long and narrow basin caused by a moderate scenario earthquake is simulated by using the spectral-element method and the parallel computing technique.A total of five different geometrical profiles within the basin are used to analyze the generation and propagation of surface waves and their relation to the basin structures in both the time and frequency domain. The amplification effects are analyzed by the distribution of peak ground velocity(PGV)and cumulative kinetic energy(Ek) in the basin. The results show that in the 3D basin, the excitation of the fundamental and higher surface wave modes are similar to that of the 2D model.Small bowls in the basin have great influence on the amplification and distribution of strong ground motion, due to their lateral resonances when the wavelengths of the lateral surface waves are comparable to the size of the bowls.Obvious basin edge effects can be seen at the basin edge closer to the source for constructive interference between direct body waves and the basin-induced surface waves. The Ek distribution maps show very large values in small bowls and some corners in the basin due to the interference of waves propagating in different directions.A high impedance contrast model can excite more surface wave modes, resulting in longer shaking durations as well as more complex seismograms and PGV and Ek distributions.Liu Qifang Yu Yanyan Zhang Xubin 2015Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2015,14,3:6
Site amplification effects as an explanation for the intensity anomaly in the Hanyuan Town during the Wenchuan Mw 7.9 earthquake显示文摘The Hanyuan Town is located approximately 200 km from the macro-epicenter of the great Wenchuan earthquake. However, it is within the only Intensity Ⅷ zone, surrounded by a region of Intensity Ⅵ. The objective of this study was to investigate this high-intensity anomaly with respect to the site amplifications in the Hanyuan Town. The base inputs were derived from the records at a nearby strong-motion station because no records were available from the town. The characteristics of the subsurface formations and their dynamic properties at a typical site in the town were obtained by drilling, field tests and laboratory tests. Seismic response and parametric sensitivity analyses of the site were conducted using Shake 91, and the results were compared with the provisions for rare earthquakes from the Chinese Code for Seismic Design of Buildings(GBJ11-89). The results showed that the average peak acceleration at the site during the Wenchuan earthquake is similar to the code-specified value under rare earthquakes, that the corresponding spectral accelerations for periods between approximately 0.35 and 0.75 s are significantly stronger than those specified by the code and that the average amplification factor at the site is significantly higher than the mean value of the site class. These findings indicate that the high-intensity anomaly in the town was primarily caused by site amplification effects from the unique structure of the soil strata.Liu Hongshuai Bo Jingshan Li Ping QiWenhao Zhang Yudong 2016Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2016,15,3:4
Local site effects evaluation by surface wave and H/V survey methods in Senirkent(Isparta)region, southwestern Turkey显示文摘This study aimed to investigate the site characterization of the Senirkent Basin(Isparta)by using the microtremor(H/V)and surface wave analysis(ReMi)methods.Senirkent district, which is located on the foothill of the Kap?Mountain, are prone to seismic and landslide hazards. After the last landslip disaster(1995),the city has continued to develop on the alluvial basin. The microtremor data collected at 41 stations were analyzed. The predominant frequency and the amplification of the soil were found to be in the range of 1.8–6.6 Hz and 0.8–6.8,respectively.These are 4.0-6.8 Hz and 1-2.5 around the slope of the Kap?Mountain and 0.8-3.6 Hz and 3.0-6.6 at alluvium deposits of the valley. The ReMi data collected along 41 profiles were analyzed to obtain a Vs30 map.The soil classifications were done by using Vs30 values according to NEHRP soil classification criteria. The results showed that the southern area of the study had better soil conditions with Vs30 between 360-1160 m/s and soil class between C and B.The alluvium deposits on the north are relatively low with Vs30 in the range of 260-360 m/s and soil class D.Mehmet Zakir Kanbur Ali Silahtar Gokhan Aktan 2020Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2020,19,2:3
Microtremor-based analysis of the dynamic response characteristics of earth-fissured sites in the Datong basin, China显示文摘This study conducted microtremor testing along six survey lines that cross three typical earth fissures in the Datong basin to determine the dynamic response characteristics of earth fissure sites with regard to the Fourier amplitude spectrum, response spectrum, and Arias intensity. The results show the following.(1)The predominant frequency of an earth fissure site is mainly affected by the thickness and the shear wave velocity of the soil layer and is minimally effected by the presence of an earth fissure.(2)Earth fissures have a pronounced amplification effect on dynamic response.Fourier amplitude, response acceleration, and Arias intensity are high near an earth fissure and decrease with an increase in distance from the earth fissure, tending toward stability at a distance of 20 m.(3)The area that is seriously affected by this amplification is within 6-8 m of an earth fissure, and the general affected area is farther out than this,to a distance of 25 m.(4)New construction should be avoided in an area affected by the amplification, and existing buildings in general and seriously affected areas need to be reinforced to increase their seismic fortification intensity.Xuan You Deng Yahong He Jia Chang Jiang Yan Zuofei Wu Wei 2021Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2021,20,3:2
Fault detection using microtremor data (HVSR-based approach) and electrical resistivity survey显示文摘The faults and fractures are known as two of the most important parameters in earthquake occurrence.During the construction in urban areas, faults and fractures may be covered in depth and thus are not visible at the ground surface. In this context, non-invasive geophysical prospecting methods(microtremor and geoelectrical methods) and borehole data were used to detect subsurface geological structures(hidden faults) in a suburb of Shiraz in Iran. The horizontal to vertical spectral ratio(HVSR) method was used to obtain the dynamic parameters(predominant frequency and resonance amplitude) of the soil, to detect hidden faults. The results show that the abrupt changes in the sediment thickness and predominant frequencies at a specific direction(NW-SE) can be related to the displacement of a nearly vertical fault with NW-SE trend. In addition, the electrical resistivity method using continuous resistivity profiling(CRP) and Schlumberger arrays was employed to detect a hidden fault and the results were compared with previous data. The obtained results of both arrays illustrate the presence of a nearly vertical fault with NW-SE trend in the region. Comparison of all results shows that the detected faults by both methods are consistent with each other. Therefore, it can be conclusive that combination of the two methods is a useful and reliable approach to study and detect hidden faults.Marzieh Khalili Abdul Vahed Mirzakurdeh 2019Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2019,11,2:0
Ambient noise H/V spectral ratio in site effects estimation in Fateh jang area, Pakistan显示文摘Local geology or local site effect is a crucial component while conducting seismic risk assessment studies. Investigations made by utilization of ambient noise are an effective tool for local site estimation. The present study is conducted to perform site response analysis at 13 different sites within urban settlements of Fateh jang area(Pakistan). The aim of this study was achieved by utilizing Nakamura method or H/V spectral ratio method. Some important local site parameters, e.g., the fundamental frequencies f0 of soft sediments, amplitudes A0 of corresponding H/V spectral ratios, and alluvium thicknesses over 13 sites within the study area, were measured and analyzed. The results show that the study area reflects low fundamental frequency f0. The fundamental frequencies of the sediments are highly variable and lie in a range of 0.6–13.0 Hz. Similarly, amplification factors at these sites are in the range of 2.0–4.0.S.M.Talha Qadri Bushra Nawaz S.H.Sajjad Riaz Ahmad Sheikh 2015Earthquake Science2015,28,1:0
Conventional vs.modified pseudo-dynamic seismic analyses in the shallow strip footing bearing capacity problem显示文摘The conventional pseudo-dynamic(CPD)and modified pseudo-dynamic(MPD)methods are invoked to obtain the seismic bearing capacity of strip foundations using the limit equilibrium method, with a two-wedge failure mechanism.A spectral version of the conventional pseudo-dynamic method(SPD)is also invoked by considering the ground motion amplification factor,to be a function of the non-dimensional frequencyλ/B and soil damping.Numeric analyses show that bearing capacity results obtained by the MPD and SPD methods are generally consistent. Both experience the same general reduction in bearing capacity with the increase ofλ/B,with successive ups and downs corresponding to soil′s natural frequencies. For 5<λ/B<10,SPD and MPD results fluctuated between falling above and below CPD results.Forλ/B<2.5,SPD and MPD results were consistent with attenuation of the shear wave, while for 10<λ/B,amplification was exhibited. Results obtained by the CPD method monotonically decrease, due to the fact that CPD fails to inherently consider site effects and damping, and instead and relies on a single factor to consider the ground motion amplification.Ghazal Rezaie Soufi Reza Jamshidi Chenari Sina Javankhoshdel 2021Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2021,20,4:0
