1The phytoconstituents and the comparative effects of aqueous extract of Irvingia gabonensis seeds and proviron on the biochemical parameters of male guinea pigs显示文摘Objective:To investigate the phytochemical screening and the effects of the aqueous extracts of the seeds of Irvingia gabonensis on the biochemical parameters of male guinea pigs.Methods: The biochemical parameters were assayed using Randox Diagnostic kits,Phenolphthalein method and colorimetric method.The phytochemical screening was carried out using standard procedures.Results:Phytochemical investigations revealed the presence of flavonoids,tannins, carbohydrate,alkaloids,terpenoids,steroids,volatile oils,saponins and cardiac glycosides.The aqueous extract of Irvingia gabonensis seeds(SO - 400 mg/kg) caused a statistically significant(P< 0.05 ANOVA) decrease in the levels of total cholesterol,urea,uric acid,total protein,prostatic, alkaline,and acid phosphatases.The highest reduction effect was obtained with uric acid at 400 mg/kg of Irvingia gabonensis extract while the least effect was observed in total cholesterol. These effects were dose- and time- dependent.Conclusions:This shows that the seeds of Irvingia gabonensis have hepatoprotective,nephroprotective and cardio protective properties.The study therefore,supports the claims on the use of the seeds of this plant by traditional medicine practitioners as a hepatoprotective and nephroprotective agent Although further studies need to be done to isolate,identify and characterize the active principles in the seeds of this plant.Obianime AW Uche FI 2010Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,2:3
2Is onchocerciasis elimination in Africa feasible by 2025:a perspective based on lessons learnt from the African control programmes显示文摘Background:Onchocerciasis is found predominantly in Africa where large scale vector control started in 1974.Registration and donation of ivermectin by Merck&Co in 1987 enabled mass treatment with ivermectin in all endemic countries in Africa and the Americas.Although elimination of onchocerciasis with ivermectin was considered feasible only in the Americas,recently it has been shown possible in Africa too,necessitating fundamental changes in technical and operational approaches and procedures.Main body:The American programme(OEPA)operating in onchocerciasis epidemiological settings similar to the mild end of the complex epidemiology of onchocerciasis in Africa,has succeeded in eliminating onchocerciasis from 4 of its 6 endemic countries.This was achieved through biannual mass treatment with ivermectin of 85%of the eligible population,and monitoring and evaluation using serological tests in children and entomological tests.The first African programme(OCP)had a head start of nearly two decades.It employed vector control and accumulated lots of knowledge on the dynamics of onchocerciasis elimination over a wide range of epidemiological settings in the vast expanse of its core area.OCP made extensive use of modelling and operationalised elimination indicators for entomological evaluation and epidemiological evaluation using skin snip procedures.The successor African programme(APOC)employed mainly ivermectin treatment.Initially its objective was to control onchocerciasis as a public health problem but that objective was later expanded to include the elimination of onchocerciasis where feasible.Building on the experience with onchocerciasis elimination of the OCP,APOC has leveraged OCP’s vast modelling experience and has developed operational procedures and indicators for evaluating progress towards elimination and stopping ivermectin mass treatment of onchocerciasis in the complex African setting.Conclusions:Following the closure of APOC in 2015,implementation of onchocerciasis elimination in Africa appears to overlook all the experience that has been accumulated by the African programmes.It is employing predominantly American processes that were developed in a dissimilar setting from the complex African onchocerciasis setting.This is impeding progress towards decisions to stop intervention in many areas that have reached the elimination point.This article summarizes lessons learned in Africa and their importance for achieving elimination in Africa by 2025.Yankum Dadzie Uche V.Amazigo Boakye A.Boatin Azodoga Seketeli 2018Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1:3
3Phytochemical constituents,analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of methanol extract of Triumfetta rhomboidea leaves in animal models显示文摘Objective:To investigate the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the methanolic extract of the leaves of Triumfetta rhomboidea on mice and rats respectively.And to screen the phytochemical constituent of the extract. Methods:The analgesic effect was determined by acetic acid-induced writhing test in mice.While the anti-inflammatory activity was determined by egg albumin-induced oedema of the rat paw.Phytochemical screening was done by standard procedures.Results:Triumfetta rhomboidea leaf extract(50 -400 mg/kg) caused a statistically significant inhibition on the egg albumin-induced eodema or inflammation in Wister albino rats with P<0.001(ANOVA).This effect was higher than the observed effect with Piroxicam(0.5 mg/kg) which was used as a standard.The effect was also dose-dependent.Furthermore,Triumfetta rhomboidea extract caused a statistically significant reduction in the number of acetic acid-induced writhing in mice,with P<0.001(ANOVA).These effects were also does-dependent and greater than the analgesic effects by paracetamol which was used as a reference drug.Phytochemical screening revealed the presence of flavonoids,steroids, triterpenoids alkaloids,tannins and saponins in Truimfetta rhomboidea leaf extract.Conclusion:Triumfetta rhomboidea can be recommended for acute inflammatory disorders and diseases associated with pains.This also supports its traditional use as an anti-snake bite and anti-cancer or anti-tumor agent.Further study is on the way to find out the mechanism of its action and also to isolate,identify and characterize the active principle responsible for these effects in this plant.Uche FI Okunna BU 2009Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2009,2,5:2
