| 1 | Environmental Implications of Excessive Selenium: A Review显示文摘Selenium is a naturally occurring trace element that is nutritionally required in smallamounts but it can become toxic at concentrations only twice those required. The narrow mar-gin between beneficial and harmful levels has important implications for human activities thatincrease the amount of selenium in the environment. Two of these activities, disposal of fbssilfuel wastes and agricultural irrigation of arid, seleniferous soils, have poisoned fish andwildlife, and threatened public health at several locations in the United States. Research stud-ies of these episodes have generated a data base that clearly illustrates the environmental hazardof excessive selenium. It is strongly bioaccumulated by aquatic organisms and even slight in-creases in waterborne concentrations can quickly result in toxic effects such as deformed em-bryos and reproductive failure in wildlife. The selenium data base has been very beneficial indeveloping hazard assessment procedures and establishing environmentally sound water qualitycriteria. The two faces of selenium, required nutrient and Potent toxin, make it a particularlyimportant trace element in the health of both animals and man. Because of this paradox, envi-ronmental selenium in relation to agriculture, fisheries, and wildlife wiIl continue to raise im-POrtant land and water management issues for decades to come. If these issues are dealt withusing prudence and the available environmental selenium data base, adverse irnpacts to naturalresources andspublic health can be | A. | 5 | Effects of Internal Flow on Vortex-Induced Vibration and Fatigue Life of Submarine Pipelines显示文摘- With the rapid development of the offshore oil industries, submarine oil / gas pipelines have been widely used. Under the complicated submarine environmental conditions, the dynamic characteristics of pipelines show some new features due to the existence of both internal and external flows. The paper is intended to investigate the vortex-induced vibration of the suspended pipeline span exposed to submarine steady flow. Especially, the effects of the flow inside the pipeline are taken into account. Its influences on the amplitude of pipeline response, and then on the fatigue life, are given in terms of the velocity of the internal flow. | Shen Zhonghan and Zhao Qiang Professor, Institute of Mechanics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100080Applied and Computation Analysis and Modeling (ACAM) Program, Louisiana Tech University, PO Box 3827, LA 71272, USA | 1996 | China Ocean Engineering1996,11,3: | 3 |

| 7 | FRACTAL SIMULATION OF AMORPHOUS ELECTROLESS NiPDEPOSITION显示文摘Electroless NiP coating has stochastic nonlinear structure, which was in far from equilibrium and instability state. Fractal theory, an effective method for resolving nonlinear system, was introduced to describe the coating structure quantitatively. Disorker and self-similarity characteristics, which are the two basic features of fractal, were explained in this paper for the first time. The results show that amorphous NiP structure exhibits scale invariance and can be quantitatively characterized by fractal dimension. Based on the fractal principle, a two-dimensional computer simulation on electroless NiP deposition was carried out and it is in agreement with the experimental result. Finally, the fractal dynamics and process of atom growth were investigated. The results show that the atom deposition is reaction-limited growth process. | K. S. Guan, L. Zhang, Y. G. Yao and M. H. | 8 | Soil-Landscape Estimation and Evaluation Program(SLEEP)to predict spatial distribution of soil attributes for environmental modeling显示文摘The spatial distribution of surface and subsurface soil attributes is an important input to environmental modeling.Soil attributes represent an important input to the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT),which influence the accuracy of the modeling outputs. An ArcGIS-based tool was developed to predict soil attributes and provide inputs to SWAT.The essential inputs are digital elevation model and field observations.Legacy soil data/maps can be used to derive observations when recent field surveys are not available.Additional layers, such as satellite images and auxiliary data, improve the prediction accuracy. The model contains a series of steps(menus)to facilitate iterative analysis. The steps are summarized in deriving many terrain attributes to characterize each pixel based on local attributes as well as the characteristics of the contributing area. The model then subdivides the entire watershed into smaller facets(subdivisions of subwatersheds)and classifies these into groups.A linear regression model to predict soil attributes from terrain attributes and auxiliary data are established for each class and implemented to predict soil attributes for each pixel within the class and then merged for the entire watershed or study area.SLEEP(Soil-Landscape Estimation and Evaluation Program)utilizes Pedo-transfer functions to provide the spatial distribution of the necessary unmapped soil data needed for SWAT prediction. An application of the tool demonstrated acceptable accuracy and better spatial distribution of soil attributes compared with two spatial interpolation techniques. The analysis indicated low sensitivity of SWAT prediction to the number of field observations when SLEEP is used to provide the soil layer. This demonstrates the potential of SLEEP to support SWAT modeling where soil data is scarce. | Feras M.Ziadat Yeganantham Dhanesh David Shoemate Raghavan Srinivasan Balaji Narasimhan Jaclyn Tech | 2015 | International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2015,8,3: | 3 |
| 9 | EXTRAPOLATION AND A-POSTERIORI ERROR ESTIMATORS OF PETROV-GALERKIN METHODS FOR NON-LINEAR VOLTERRA INTEGRO-DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS显示文摘In this paper we will show that the Richardson extrapolation can be used to enhance the numerical solution generated by a Petrov-Galerkin finite element method for the initial value problem for a nonlinear Volterra integro-differential equation. As by-products, we will also show that these enhanced approximations can be used to form a class of posteriori estimators for this Petrov-Galerkin finite element method. | 10 | CONSIDERING NEIGHBORHOOD INFORMATION IN IMAGE FUZZY CLUSTERING显示文摘Fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm is a classical non-supervised classification method. For image classification, fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm makes decisions on a pixel-by-pixel basis and does not take advantage of spatial information, regardless of the pixels' correlation. In this letter, a novel fuzzy C-means clustering algorithm is introduced, which is based on image's neighborhood system. During classification procedure, the novel algorithm regards all pixels'fuzzy membership as a random field. The neighboring pixels' fuzzy membership information is used for the algorithm's iteration procedure. As a result, the algorithm gives a more smooth classification result and cuts down the computation time. | Huang Ning Zhu Minhui Zhang Shourong(The Nat.
