| 2 | Some open problems in granular matter mechanics显示文摘Granular matter is a large assemblage of solid particles, which is fundamentally different from any other type of matters, such as solid and liquid. Most models presented for granular matter are phenomenological and are only suitable for solving engineering problems. Many fundamental mechanical problems remain open. By analyzing characteristics of internal state structure, we propose that granular matter is intrinsically multiscale, i.e. microscale of particle size, mesoscale of force chain, and macroscale of the bulk of granular matter. The correlations among difference scales would be crucial. The mesoscale force chain network is determined by both particle properties and macroscopic boundary conditions. The evolution of the force the chain network contributes to macroscopic mechanical properties of granular matter. In addition, we discuss the drawbacks in simplifying contact forces in the current models, and the difficulties in analyzing the interaction of interstitial fluid in wet granular matter. | 5 | Recent Advances in Swine Amino Acid Nutrition显示文摘Recent advances in swine protein nutrition are characterized by the development of functional amino acids(AA)in regulating fetal and postnatal survival,growth and development.These AA include arginine,glutamine,glutamate,proline,leucine,cysteine and tryptophan.Due to limited knowledge on AA nutrition,pork producers have traditionally paid little attention to supplementing the arginine family of AA to swine diets.Results of recent studies indicate that functional AA serve important regulatory functions in nutrient metabolism,protein turnover,and immune function,therefore enhancing efficiency of feed utilization by pigs.The underlying mechanisms include activation of nitric oxide,mammalian target of rapamycin,gaseous signaling,and AMP-activated protein kinase pathways,as well as anti-oxidative function.Dietary supplementation with arginine,glutamine,proline or leucine to weanling piglets enhances their growth performance.Arginine or glutamine is also effective in increasing milk production by lactating sows.Furthermore,supplementing arginine to the diet of pregnant gilts between days 30 and 114 of gestation increases the number of live-born piglets and litter birth-weight.Availability of feed-grade functional AA holds great promise for improving animal health and nutrient utilization in pig production worldwide.Additionally,feedstuffs of animal origin [e.g.,blood meal(ring dried),feather meal(hydrolyzed),meat and bone meal,porcine protein meal,and poultry by-product meal(both feed-and petfood-grades)] are excellent and cost-effective sources of both essential and functional AA for formulating balanced swine diets.New knowledge on AA nutrition provides a much needed scientific basis for revising the next edition of swine nutrient requirements. | Guoyao Wu Department of Animal Science and Faculty of Nutrition,Texas A&M University,College Station,TX,77843,U.S.A and State Key Laboratory of Animal Nutrition,China Agricultural University,Beijing,100193,China | 2010 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2010,1,2: | 7 |

| 7 | Effects of disinhibition on spatiotemporal pattern of neuronal first recruitment in neuronal networks显示文摘The propagation of neuronal activities is a key feature to understanding information processing in networks. The analysis based on first-spikes of bursts in turn plays an important role in the research of neuronal activity propagation. Our focus here is to investigate how spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal first-spikes are affected by disinhibition. Multi-electrode arrays were used to record stimulation-evoked bursts of multiple neurons in randomly cultured neuronal networks. Both the precise timing of and the rank relationships between first-spikes were analyzed. Compared with evoked bursts in the network's native state, the precise first-spike latencies in its dis-inhibited state are more consistent and the propagation of its bursting activities is much faster. METHODS: Saphenous vein segments from patients with type 2 diabetes ( n = 12) and patients without diabetes (n =8) were obtained. The release of NO was measured directly from the endothelium using a NO-specific amperometric probe. NΩ-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 0.1 mmol/L), a NO synthase (NOS) inhibitor, or morphine (1 μmol/L), a stimulant, was administered and the measurements were repeated.
