| 1 | Red cell distribution width to platelet ratio: New and promising prognostic marker in acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the accuracy of red cell distribution width(RDW) to platelet ratio(RPR) to predict in-hospital mortality in acute pancreatitis(AP).METHODS: Between January 2010 and June 2012, 102 patients with AP were recruited to the study. In this retrospective cohort study, for all subjects, demographic data on hospital admission, AP etiology, comorbid diseases, organ failure assessment, laboratory parameters and length of hospital stay were examined. Additionally, we used a non-invasive prediction method in addition to the RPR to evaluate the disease severity. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the impact of RPR on hospital admission to predict mortality.RESULTS:The male-female ratio(59/43)was 1.37with a median age of 56.5 years(17-89 years).In both univariate and multivariate analyses,RDW and RPR were presented as independent and significant variables on admission to predict mortality.The RPR obtained on hospital admission was persistently higher amongnon-survivors than among survivors(P<0.0001).The median RPR was 0.000087 in the non-survivor group and 0.000058 in the survivor group.RPR with a cutoff value of 0.000067 presented an area under the curve of 0.783(95%CI:0.688-0.878)in receiver operating characteristic curves and could predict the mortality of approximately 80%of the patients. | Erdin etinkaya Kazim Senol Baris Saylam Mesut Tez | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014，20，39： | 38 |
| 2 | Efficacy of intramuscular diclofenac and fluid replacement in prevention of post-ERCP pancreatitis显示文摘AIM:To assess the efficacy of intramuscular diclofenac and fluid replacement for prevention of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) pancreatitis.METHODS: A prospective, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 80 patients who underwent ERCP. Patients were randomized to receive parenteral diclofenac at a loading dose of 75 mg followed by the infusion of 5-10 mL/kg per hour isotonic saline over 4 h after the procedure, or the infusion of 500 mL isotonic saline as placebo. Patients were evaluated clinically, and serum amylase levels were measured 4, 8 and 24 h after the procedure.RESULTS: The two groups were matched for age, sex, underlying disease, ERCP findings, and type of treatment. The overall incidence of pancreatitis was 7.5% in the diclofenac group and 17.5% in the placebo group (12.5% in total). There were no significant differences in the incidence of pancreatitis and other variables between the two groups. | 3 | Radical vs conservative surgery for hydatid liver cysts:Experience from single center显示文摘AIM:To compare the efficacy and safety of radical and conservative surgical interventions for liver hydatid disease.METHODS:The study comprised 59 patients in two groups who had undergone radical and conservative surgical procedures for liver hydatid disease in our department between 2004 and 2009. Preoperative diagnostic tools,medical treatments,demographic and clinical characteristics,postoperative follow-up,and recurrence were compared in both groups. RESULTS:This non-randomized retrospective studyincluded 59 patients who had undergone liver hydatid disease surgery. The radical technique was used in 18 patients (mean age:42.1 ± 13.5 years,seven male,11 female),and the conservative technique was used in 41 patients (mean age:43.5 ± 13.9 years,17 male,24 female). The follow-up period ranged from 3 to 58 mo. Although operative time was significantly shorter in the conservative group (P < 0.001),recurrence was significantly reduced in the radical group (P = 0.045). No statistically significant differences were found in terms of hospitalization duration,cyst count and size,location,postoperative complications,scolicidal solution usage,or follow-up duration between the two groups.CONCLUSION:The more effective method for pre-venting postoperative recurrence is radical surgery. | 4 | Left-sided appendicitis:Review of 95 published cases and a case report显示文摘AIM:To give an overview of the literature on left-sided acute appendicitis (LSAA) associated with situs inversus totalis (SIT) and midgut malrotation (MM).METHODS:We present a new case of LSAA with SIT and a literature review of studies published in the English language on LSAA,accessed via PubMed and Google Scholar databases.RESULTS:Ninety-five published cases of LSAA were evaluated and a 25-year-old female,who presented to our clinic with left lower abdominal pain caused by LSAA,is reported.In the reviewed literature,fiftyseven patients were male and 38 were female with an age range of 8 to 82 years and a median age of 29.1 ± 15.9 years.Sixty-six patients had SIT,23 had MM,three had cecal malrotation,and two had a previously unnoted congenital abnormality.Fifty-nine patients had presentedto the hospital with left lower,14 with right lower and seven with bilateral lower quadrant pain,and seven subjects complained of left upper quadrant pain.The diagnosis was established preoperatively in 49 patients,intraoperatively in 19,and during the postoperative period in five;14 patients were aware of having this anomaly.The data of eight patients were not unavailable.Eleven patients underwent laparoscopic appendectomy,which was combined with cholecystectomy in two cases.Histopathological examination of the appendix specimens revealed adenocarcinoma in only two of 95 patients.CONCLUSION:The diagnosis of left lower quadrant pain is based on well-established clinical symptoms,physical examination and physician's experience. | Sami Akbulut Abdullah Ulku Ayhan Senol Mahmut Tas Yusuf Yagmur | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010，16，44： | 9 |
| 5 | Expression of Notch pathway components (Numb, Itch, and Siah-1) in colorectal tumors: A clinicopathological study显示文摘BACKGROUND The role of the Notch pathway in carcinogenesis and tumor progression has been demonstrated in many organs,including the colon.Accordingly,studies aimed at developing therapies targeting this pathway in various cancers require the identification of several factors that may play a role in regulating Notch-1 expression.Although Numb,Itch,and seven in absentia homolog-1(Siah-1)have been shown to contribute to the regulation of Notch signaling,their role in colorectal carcinogenesis and tumor progression has not been fully elucidated to date.AIM To evaluate Numb,Itch,and Siah-1 expression in colorectal tumors to clarify their relationship with Notch-1 expression and their role in carcinogenesis and tumor behavior.METHODS Expression of Notch-1,Numb,Itch,and Siah-1 was investigated in 50 colorectal carcinomas,30 adenomas,and 20 healthy colonic tissues by immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(PCR)analyses.RESULTS In contrast to Notch-1,which is expressed at higher levels in tumor tissues and adenomas,expression of Numb,Itch,and Siah-1 was stronger and more frequent in normal mucosa(P<0.01).There was a positive correlation between Notch-1 expression and high histological grade,the presence of lymph node metastasis,and advanced-stage tumors,whereas expression of Numb,Itch,and Siah-1 was absent or reduced in tumors with these clinicopathological parameters(P<0.05).In survival analysis,expression of Notch was related to poor prognosis but that of Numb,Itch,and Siah-1 correlated with improved survival(P<0.05).Multivariate analysis revealed Notch-1 expression and loss of Numb expression to be independent prognostic parameters together with lymph node metastasis(P<0.05).CONCLUSION Our findings support the role of Notch-1 in colorectal carcinoma and indicate that loss of Numb,Itch,and Siah-1 expression is associated with carcinogenesis.Our data also suggest that these three proteins might be involved in the Notch-1 pathway during colorectal carcinoma(CRC)progression and might play an essential role in approaches targeting Notch as novel molecular therapies for CRC. | Sinem Cil Gonulcu Betul Unal Ibrahim Cumhur Bassorgun Mualla Ozcan Hasan Senol Coskun Gulsum Ozlem Elpek | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020，26，26： | 5 |
| 6 | Melatonin reduces traumatic brain injury-induced oxidative stress in the cerebral cortex and blood of rats显示文摘Free radicals induced by traumatic brain injury have deleterious effects on the function and antioxidant vitamin levels of several organ systems including the brain. Melatonin possesses antioxidant effect on the brain by maintaining antioxidant enzyme and vitamin levels. We investigated the effects of melatonin on antioxidant ability in the cerebral cortex and blood of traumatic brain injury rats. Results showed that the cerebral cortex β-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, reduced glutathione, and erythrocyte reduced glutathione levels, and plasma vitamin C level were decreased by traumatic brain injury whereas they were increased following melatonin treatment. | 8 | Kefir treatment ameliorates dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in rats显示文摘AIM: To investigate the preventive effect of kefir on colitis induced with dextran sulfate sodium(DSS) in rats.METHODS: Twenty-four male Wistar-albino rats were randomized into four groups: normal control,kefircontrol,colitis,and kefir-colitis groups. Rats in the normal and kefir-control groups were administered tap water as drinking water for 14 d. Rats in the colitis and kefir-colitis groups were administered a 3% DSS solution as drinking water for 8-14 d to induce colitis. Rats in the kefir-control and kefir-colitis groups were administered 5 m L kefir once a day for 14 d while rats in the normal control and colitis group were administered an identical volume of the placebo(skim milk) using an orogastric feeding tube. Clinical colitis was evaluated with reference to the disease activity index(DAI),based on daily weight loss,stool consistency,and presence of bleeding in feces. Rats were sacrificed on the 15 th day,blood specimens were collected,and colon tissues were rapidly removed. Levels of myeloperoxidase(MPO),tumor necrosisfactor(TNF)-α,interleukin(IL)-10,malondialdehyde,and inducible nitric oxide synthase(i NOS) were measured in colon tissue.RESULTS: The DAI was lower in the kefir-colitis group than in the colitis group(on the 3rd and 5th days of colitis induction; P < 0.01). The DAI was also significantly higher in the colitis group between days 2 and 6 of colitis induction when compared to the normal control and kefir-control groups. The DAI was statistically higher only on the 6th day in the kefircolitis group when compared to that in the normal control groups. Increased colon weight and decreased colon length were observed in colitis-induced rats. Mean colon length in the colitis group was significantly shorter than that of the kefir-control group. Kefir treatment significantly decreased histologic colitis scores(P < 0.05). MPO activity in the colitis group was significantly higher than in the kefir-control group(P < 0.05). Kefir treatment significantly reduced the DSS colitis-induced TNF-α increase(P < 0.01). No statistically significant differences were observed among groups for IL-10 and MDA levels. | 10 | Efficient adsorption of Th(Ⅳ)from aqueous solution by modified SBA-15 mesoporous silica显示文摘A very effective adsorbent for thorium has been obtained by modification of Santa Barbara Amorphous(SBA-15) using the chelating agent thenoyltrifluoroacetone(TTA).The prepared adsorbent(SBA-15-TTA) was characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),surface area,porosity,and zeta potential analyses.We investigated the factors affecting Th(IV) adsorption on TTA-SBA-15,such as initial p H,contact time,temperature,and initial metal concentration.The effective initial p H for adsorption was found to be 4.The binding sites on TTA-SBA-15 adsorbent were saturated using an initial Th(IV) concentration of 100 mg L-1.The Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm suggested a strong chemical interaction between adsorbent and adsorbate.Contact time and temperature had no significant effect on the adsorption.Therefore,the studies show that TTA-SBA-15 is a promising adsorbent to treat Th(IV)-contaminated effluents. | Mutlu Gok Senol Sert Gulcin Ozevci Meral Eral | 2018 | Nuclear Science and Techniques2018，29，7： | 3 |

| 13 | Effect of growth hormone on small intestinal homeostasis relation to cellular mediators IGF-I and IGFBP-3显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the effects of growth hormone(GH) on the histology of small intestines which might be related to the role of insulin like growth factor(IGF)-I, IGF-binding protein 3(IGFBP-3)and its receptors. METHODS:Twelve week-old adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into two groups.The study group(n =10),received recombinant human growth hormone (rGH)at a dose of 2 mg/kg per day subcutaneously for 14 d and the control group(n=10)received physiologic serum.Paraffin sections of jejunum were stained with periodic acid shift(PAS)and hematoxylin and eosin(HE) for light microscopy.They were also examined for IGF-I, IGFBP-3 and IGF-receptor immunoreactivities.Staining intensity was graded semi-quantitatively using the HS- CORE. RESULTS:Goblet cells and the cells in crypt epitheliawere significantly increased in the study group compared to that of the control group.We have demonstrated an increase of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 immunoreactivities in surface epithelium of the small intestine by GH application.IGF-I receptor immunoreactivities of crypt,villous columnar cells,enteroendocrine cells and muscularis mucosae were also more strongly positive in the study group compared to those of in the control group.
