Role of dietary polyphenols in the management of peptic ulcer显示文摘Peptic ulcer disease is a multifactorial and complex disease involving gastric and duodenal ulcers.Despite medical advances, the management of peptic ulcer and its complications remains a challenge, with high morbidity and death rates for the disease. An accumulating body of evidence suggests that, among a broad reach of natural molecules, dietary polyphenols with multiple biological mechanisms of action play a pivotal part in the management of gastric and duodenal ulcers. The current review confirmed that dietary polyphenols possess protective and therapeutic potential in peptic ulcer mediated by:improving cytoprotection,re-epithelialization,neovascularization,and angiogenesis; up-regulating tissue growth factors and prostaglandins; down-regulating anti-angiogenic factors; enhancing endothelial nitric oxide synthasederived NO; suppressing oxidative mucosal damage; amplifying antioxidant performance, antacid, and antisecretory activity; increasing endogenous mucosal defensive agents; and blocking Helicobacter pylori colonization associated gastric morphological changes and gastroduodenal inflammation and ulceration. In addition,anti-inflammatory activity due to downregulation of proinflammatory cytokines and cellular and int e r c e llular adhe s ion age nt s,s uppr e s s ing leukocyte-endothelium interaction, inhibiting nuclear signaling pathways of inflammatory process, and modulating intracellular transduction and transcription pathways have key roles in the anti-ulcer action of dietary polyphenols. In conclusion, administration of a significant amount of dietary polyphenols in the human diet or as part of dietary supplementation along with conventional treatment can result in perfect security and treatment of peptic ulcer.Further welldesigned preclinical and clinical tests are recommended in order to recognize higher levels of evidence for the confirmation of bioefficacy and safety of dietary polyphenols in the management of peptic ulcer. | Mohammad Hosein Farzaei Mohammad Abdollahi Roja Rahimi | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,21: | 34
Effi cacy of tricyclic antidepressants in irritable bowel syndrome:A meta-analysis显示文摘We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of tricyclic antidepressants(TCAs) as a therapeutic option for irritable bowel syndrome(IBS) through meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. For the years 1966 until September 2008,PubMed,Scopus,Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials were searched for double-blind,placebo-controlled trials investigating the effi cacy of TCAs in the management of IBS.Seven randomized,placebo-controlled clinical trials met our criteria and were included in the metaanalysis.TCAs used in the treatment arm of these trials included amitriptyline, imipramine, desipramine, doxepin and trimipramine. The pooled relative risk for clinical improvement with TCA therapy was 1.93(95% CI:1.44 to 2.6,P<0.0001).Effect size of TCAs versus placebo for mean change in abdominal pain score among the two studies was -44.15(95% CI:-53.27 to -35.04,P<0.0001).It is concluded that low dose TCAs exhibit clinically and statistically signifi cant control of IBS symptoms. | Roja Rahimi Shekoufeh Nikfar Ali Rezaie Mohammad Abdollahi | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,13: | 22
Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile ducts: A case report and literature review显示文摘Intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct(IPNB) is a rare bile duct neoplasm mostly found in far eastern nations where hepatolithiasis and clonorchiasis infections are endemic. In western countries,it is very rare and the etiology is unknown. In this article,we report the first IPNB patient we encountered in our clinic and a literature review. The patient is a 38-yearold female with a history of choledocholithiasis who presented with obstructive jaundice. She was found to have a papillary mass at the junction of the right hepatic duct and common hepatic duct with six masses in the liver parenchyma. The immunophenotypic and histologic features of the tumor are consistent with IPNB,gastric subtype. The patient had a partial hepatectomy and has been receiving palliative chemotherapy. In a search of Pub Med database,we collected 354 IPNB patients reported in 22 articles. In these patients,52.8% were from Japan and 27.7% were from western countries including the United States(11.0%). The age of the patients ranged from 35 to 80 years old with an average of 64.6. Male/female ratio was 1.5. Macroscopically,57.5% of the tumors were in the left lobe and 29.5% were in the right lobe. The average size of the tumor were 4.2 cm at the time of diagnosis. Histologically,pancreato-biliary subtype accounted for 41.8%,intestinal 28.0%,gastric 13.5% and oncocytic 16%. An invasive component is most often present in the pancreato-biliary and gastric subtypes. Despite recent advanced technologies, diagnosis of IPNB is still challenging, especially in western countries due to its rarity. Defined clinicopathologic features are in demand for the accurate diagnosis and proper treatment. | Yaohong Tan Clara Milikowski Yanelba Toribio Adam Singer Claudia P Rojas Monica T Garcia-Buitrago | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,43: | 19
Combining computer vision and deep learning to enable ultra-scale aerial phenotyping and precision agriculture:A case study of lettuce production显示文摘Aerial imagery is regularly used by crop researchers, growers and farmers to monitor crops during the growing season. To extract meaningful information from large-scale aerial images collected from the field,high-throughput phenotypic analysis solutions are required, which not only produce high-quality measures of key crop traits, but also support professionals to make prompt and reliable crop management decisions. Here,we report AirSurf,an automated and open-source analytic platform that combines modern computer vision,up-to-date machine learning, and modular software engineering in order to measure yield-related phenotypes from ultra-large aerial imagery. To quantify millions of in-field lettuces acquired by fixed-wing light aircrafts equipped with normalised difference vegetation index(NDVI)sensors,we customised AirSurf by combining computer vision algorithms and a deep-learning classifier trained with over 100,000 labelled lettuce signals. The tailored platform,AirSurf-Lettuce,is capable of scoring and categorising iceberg lettuces with high accuracy(>98%).Furthermore,novel analysis functions have been developed to map lettuce size distribution across the field, based on which associated global positioning system(GPS)tagged harvest regions have been identified to enable growers and farmers to conduct precision agricultural practises in order to improve the actual yield as well as crop marketability before the harvest. | Alan Bauer Aaron George Bostrom Joshua Ball Christopher Applegate Tao Cheng Stephen Laycock Sergio Moreno Rojas Jacob Kirwan Ji Zhou | 2019 | Horticulture Research2019,6,1: | 14
Diabetes and cancer:Looking at the multiligand/RAGE axis显示文摘The association between diabetes and hyperglycemia and the associated increased risk of several solid and hematologic malignancies has been the subject of investigation for many years.Although the association is not fully understood, current knowledge clearly indicates that diabetes may influence malignant cell transformation by several mechanisms, including hyperinsulinemia, hyperglycemia and chronic inflammation. In this context, the receptor for advanced glycation end-products (RAGE) has emerged as a focal point in its contribution to malignant transformation and tumor growth. We high-light how RAGE,once activated,as it manifests itself in conditions such as diabetes or hyperglycemia,is able to continuously bring about an inflammatory milieu, thus supporting the contribution of chronic inflammation to the development of malignancies. | Armando Rojas Ileana González Erik Morales Ramón Pérez-Castro Jacqueline Romero Héctor Figueroa | 2011 | World Journal of Diabetes2011,2,7: | 11
Herbal medicines for the management of irritable bowelsyndrome:A comprehensive review显示文摘Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional gut disorder with high prevalence.Because of various factors involved in its pathophysiology and disappointing results from conventional IBS medications, the treatment of IBS is challenging and use of complementary and alternative medicines especially herbal therapies is increasing. In this paper, electronic databases including PubMed,Scopus, and Cochrane library were searched to obtain any in vitro,in vivo or human studies evaluating single or compound herbal preparations in the management of IBS.One in vitro,3 in vivo and 23 human studies were included and systematically reviewed. The majority of studies are about essential oil of Menta piperita as a single preparation and STW 5 as a compound preparation. Some evaluated herbs such as Curcuma xanthorriza and Fumaria officinalis did not demonstrate any benefits in IBS.However,it seems there are many other herbal preparations such as those proposed in traditional medicine of different countries that could be studied and investigated for their efficacy in management of IBS. | Roja Rahimi Mohammad Abdollahi | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,7: | 11
A review of the efficacy of traditional Iranian medicine forinflammatory bowel disease显示文摘The etiology of inflammatory bowel disease(IBD) is not yet known, but many factors such as defects in the immune system, oxidative stress, microbial content in the gastrointestinal tract, nuclear factor(NF)-κB,nitric oxide(NO),cyclooxygenase-2(Cox-2),and leukotriene B4(LB4) are thought to play a role in its pathogenesis. In traditional Iranian medicine(TIM),several medicinal plants are thought to be effective for the treatment of IBD.In this study, information on all of these remedies were derived from all available old sources such as documents or notes and books and were added to the information derived from modern medical databases covering all in vitro,in vivo and clinical trials. For some of these plants, only one or two mechanisms of action have been found such as in Cassia fistula,Lepidium sativum, and Bunium persicum. However, for some plants various mechanisms of action are known. For example,Commiphora mukul is effective in IBD due to its immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties and it decreases NF-κB,NO and Cox-2.Another herb,Plantago ovata, has immunomodulatory,antioxidant,anti-inflammatory and wound healing activities and decreases NO and LB4.Considering the mechanisms of action of these plants, the combination of some of them may be useful because of their many mechanisms of action such as Pistacia lentiscus,Bunium persicum,Solanum nigrum,Plantago ovata,Boswellia,Solanum nigrum,Plantago ovata and Commiphora mukul. For some of the herbal products used in TIM such as oleogum resin from Commiphora myrrha, seeds of Ocimum basilicum, seeds of Linum usitatissimum, gum resin of Dracaena cinnabari, seeds of Plantago major, seeds of Lallementia royleana, and seeds of Allium porrum, there is no or not enough studies to confirm their benefits in IBD.It is suggested that an evaluation of the effects of these plants on different aspects of IBD should be performed. | Roja Rahimi Mohammad Abdollahi Mohammad Reza Shams-Ardekani | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,36: | 10

Functions of NKG2D in CD8^(+) T cells: an opportunity for immunotherapy显示文摘Natural killer group 2 member D(NKG2D)is a type II transmembrane receptor.NKG2D is present on NK cells in both mice and humans, whereas it is constitutively expressed on CD8+T cells in humans but only expressed upon T-cell activation in mice.NKG2D is a promiscuous receptor that recognizes stress-induced surface ligands. In NK cells,NKG2D signaling is sufficient to unleash the killing response;in CD8+T cells, this requires concurrent activation of the T-cell receptor(TCR).In this case, the function of NKG2D is to authenticate the recognition of a stressed target and enhance TCR signaling.CD28 has been established as an archetype provider of costimulation during T-cell priming. It has become apparent, however, that signals from other costimulatory receptors, such as NKG2D,are required for optimal T-cell function outside the priming phase. This review will focus on the similarities and differences between NKG2D and CD28;less well-described characteristics of NKG2D,such as the potential role of NKG2D in CD8+T-cell memory formation, cancer immunity and autoimmunity;and the opportunities for targeting NKG2D in immunotherapy. | Kushal Prajapati Cynthia Perez Lourdes Beatriz Plaza Rojas Brianna Burke Jose A Guevara-Patino | 2018 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2018,15,5: | 7
UPLAND EROSION MODELING WITH CASC2D-SED显示文摘Developed at Colorado State University, CASC2D-SED is a physically-based model simulating the hydrologic response of a watershed to a distributed rainfall field. The time-dependent processes include: precipitation, interception, infiltration, surface runoff and channel routing, upland erosion, transport and sedimentation. CASC2D-SED is applied to Goodwin Creek, Mississippi. The watershed covers 21 km2 and has been extensively monitored both at the outlet and at several internal locations by the ARS-NSL at Oxford, MS. The model has been calibrated and validated using rainfall data from 16 meteorological stations, 6 stream gauging stations and 6 sediment gauging stations. Sediment erosion/deposition rates by size fraction are predicted both in space and time. Geovisualization, a powerful data exploration technique based on GIS technology, is used to analyze and display the dynamic output time series generated by the CASC2D-SED model. | Pierre JULIEN Rosalía ROJAS | 2002 | International Journal of Sediment Research2002,17,4: | 7
Relationship between Temperaments of Medicinal Plants and Their Major Chemical Compounds显示文摘Objective: To determine any relationship between temperaments of medicinal plants referred to traditional Iranian manuscripts and their major chemical compounds. Methods: Plants used in traditional Iranian medicine were categorized based on their major chemical compounds including alkaloids, phenolic compounds, and essential oils. Their temperaments were extracted from traditional herbal pharmacopeias of Iran. The possible relationship between major chemical compounds and temperaments of each group were evaluated. Results: Plants containing phenolic compounds as their major constituents are hot and dry temperaments except those contain tannins with cold and dry temperaments. Plants containing essential oils have hot and dry temperaments except those whose major essential oils with alcoholic structure which have cold and dry temperaments. Alkaloid-containing plants have cold and dry or hot and dry temperaments based on their alkaloidal structures. Conclusions: There is a close relationship between major chemical compounds of medicinal plants and their temperaments mentioned in traditional Iranian manuscripts. | Mohammad Reza Shams Ardekani Roja Rahimi Behjat Javadi Leila Abdi Mahnaz Khanavi | 2011 | Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine2011,31,1: | 7
Guillain–Barré syndrome, transverse myelitis and infectious diseases显示文摘Guillain–Barrésyndrome(GBS)and transverse myelitis(TM)both represent immunologically mediated polyneuropathies of major clinical importance. Both are thought to have a genetic predisposition, but as of yet no specific genetic risk loci have been clearly defined. Both are considered autoimmune, but again the etiologies remain enigmatic. Both may be induced via molecular mimicry, particularly from infectious agents and vaccines, but clearly host factor and co-founding host responses will modulate disease susceptibility and natural history.GBS is an acute inflammatory immune-mediated polyradiculoneuropathy characterized by tingling, progressive weakness, autonomic dysfunction, and pain.Immune injury specifically takes place at the myelin sheath and related Schwann-cell components in acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, whereas in acute motor axonal neuropathy membranes on the nerve axon(the axolemma)are the primary target for immune-related injury.Outbreaks of GBS have been reported, most frequently related to Campylobacter jejuni infection, however, other agents such as Zika Virus have been strongly associated.Patients with GBS related to infections frequently produce antibodies against human peripheral nerve gangliosides. In contrast,TM is an inflammatory disorder characterized by acute or subacute motor, sensory, and autonomic spinal cord dysfunction. There is interruption of ascending and descending neuroanatomical pathways on the transverse plane of the spinal cord similar to GBS.It has been suggested to be triggered by infectious agents and molecular mimicry. In this review,we will focus on the putative role of infectious agents as triggering factors of GBS and TM. | Yhojan Rodríguez Manuel Rojas Yovana Pacheco Yeny Acosta-Ampudia Carolina Ramírez-Santana Diana M Monsalve M Eric Gershwin Juan-Manuel Anaya | 2018 | Cellular & Molecular Immunology2018,15,6: | 7
Helicobacter Pylori Infection and Lung Cancer: New Insights and Future Challenges显示文摘Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is the causative agent of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer diseases and is an important risk factor for the development functional dyspepsia, peptic ulceration, gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma. H. pylori has very high rates of infection in human populations, and it is estimated that over 50% of the world population is infected. Recently, certain extra-gastric manifestations, linked to H. pylori infection, have been widely investigated. Noteworthy, a growing body of evidences supports an association between H. pylori infection with lung cancer. The present review intend to highlight not only the most recent evidences supporting this association, but also some missed points, which must be considered to validate this emerging association. | Ileana GONZALEZ Paulina ARAYA Armando ROJAS | 2018 | 中国肺癌杂志2018,21,9: | 7

Interventions of natural and synthetic agents in inflammatory bowel disease, modulation of nitric oxide pathways显示文摘Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)refers to a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal(GI)tract. The elevated levels of nitric oxide(NO)in serum and affected tissues;mainly synthesized by the inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)enzyme;can exacerbate GI inflammation and is one of the major biomarkers of GI inflammation.Various natural and synthetic agents are able to ameliorate GI inflammation and decrease iNOS expression to the extent comparable with some IBD drugs.Thereby, the purpose of this study was to gather a list of natural or synthetic mediators capable of modulating IBD through the NO pathway.Electronic databases including Google Scholar and PubMed were searched from 1980 to May 2018.We found that polyphenols and particularly flavonoids are able to markedly attenuate NO production and iNOS expression through the nuclear factorκB(NF-κB)and JAK/STAT signaling pathways.Prebiotics and probiotics can also alter the GI microbiota and reduce NO expression in IBD models through a broad array of mechanisms.A number of synthetic molecules have been found to suppress NO expression either dependent on the NF-κB signaling pathway(i.e.,dexamethasone,pioglitazone,tropisetron)or independent from this pathway(i.e.,nicotine,prednisolone,celecoxib,β-adrenoceptor antagonists).Co-administration of natural and synthetic agents can affect the tissue level of NO and may improve IBD symptoms mainly by modulating the Toll like receptor-4 and NF-κB signaling pathways. | Aida Kamalian Masoud Sohrabi Asl Mahsa Dolatshahi Khashayar Afshari Shiva Shamshiri Nazanin Momeni Roudsari Saeideh Momtaz Roja Rahimi Mohammad Abdollahi Amir Hossein Abdolghaffari | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,24: | 5
Alzheimer’s disease and type 2 diabetes mellitus:Pathophysiologic and pharmacotherapeutics links显示文摘At present,Alzheimer’s disease(AD)and type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM)are two highly prevalent disorders worldwide, especially among elderly individuals.T2DM appears to be associated with cognitive dysfunction, with a higher risk of developing neurocognitive disorders, including AD.These diseases have been observed to share various pathophysiological mechanisms, including alterations in insulin signaling, defects in glucose transporters(GLUTs),and mitochondrial dysfunctions in the brain. Therefore, the aim of this review is to summarize the current knowledge regarding the molecular mechanisms implicated in the association of these pathologies as well as recent therapeutic alternatives. In this context, the hyperphosphorylation of tau and the formation of neurofibrillary tangles have been associated with the dysfunction of the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase and mitogen-activated protein kinase pathways in the nervous tissues as well as the decrease in the expression of GLUT-1 and GLUT-3 in the different areas of the brain, increase in reactive oxygen species, and production of mitochondrial alterations that occur in T2DM.These findings have contributed to the implementation of overlapping pharmacological interventions based on the use of insulin and antidiabetic drugs,or,more recently, azeliragon, amylin, among others, which have shown possible beneficial effects in diabetic patients diagnosed with AD. | Milagros Rojas Mervin Chávez-Castillo Jordan Bautista Ángel Ortega Manuel Nava Juan Salazar Edgar Díaz-Camargo Oscar Medina Joselyn Rojas-Quintero Valmore Bermúdez | 2021 | World Journal of Diabetes2021,12,6: | 5

Receptor for advanced glycation end-products axis and coronavirus disease 2019 in inflammatory bowel diseases:A dangerous liaison?显示文摘Compelling evidence supports the crucial role of the receptor for advanced glycation end-products(RAGE)axis activation in many clinical entities.Since the beginning of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, there is an increasing concern about the risk and handling of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)infection in inflammatory gastrointestinal disorders, such as inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD).However, clinical data raised during pandemic suggests that IBD patients do not have an increased risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection or develop a more severe course of infection. In the present review,we intend to highlight how two potentially important contributors to the inflammatory response to SARS-CoV-2 infection in IBD patients, the RAGE axis activation as well as the cross-talk with the renin-angiotensin system, are dampened by the high expression of soluble forms of both RAGE and the angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE)2.The soluble form of RAGE functions as a decoy for its ligands, and soluble ACE2 seems to be an additionally attenuating contributor to RAGE axis activation, particularly by avoiding the transactivation of the RAGE axis that can be produced by the virus-mediated imbalance of the ACE/angiotensin II/angiotensin II receptor type 1 pathway. | Armando Rojas Ivan Schneider Cristian Lindner Ileana Gonzalez Miguel Angel Morales | 2021 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2021,27,19: | 4
