| 2 | The European Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure(ECCSEL)显示文摘The transition to a non-emitting energy mix for power generation will take decades. This transition will need to be sustainable, e.g.economically affordable. Fossil fuels which are abundant have an important role to play in this respect, provided that Carbon Capture and Storage(CCS) is progressively implemented. CCS is the only way to reduce emissions from energy intensive industries.Thus, the need for upgraded and new CCS research facilities is widely recognised among stakeholders across Europe, as emphasised by the Zero Emissions Platform(ZEP) [1] and the European Energy Research Alliance on CCS(EERA-CCS) [2].The European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratory Infrastructure, ECCSEL, provides funders, operators and researchers with significant benefits by offering access to world-class research facilities that, in many cases, are unlikely for a single nation to support in isolation.This implies creation of synergy and the avoidance of duplication as well as streamlining of funding for research facilities.ECCSEL offers open access to its advanced laboratories for talented scientists and visiting researchers to conduct cutting-edge research.In the planning of ECCSEL, gap analyses were performed and CCS technologies have been reviewed to underpin and envisage the future experimental setup; 1) Making use of readily available facilities, 2) Modifying existing facilities, and 3) Planning and building entirely new advanced facilities.The investments required for the first ten years(2015-2025) are expected to be in the range of €80-120 miilion. These investments show the current level of ambition, as proposed during the preparatory phase(2011-2014).Entering the implementation phase in 2015, 9 European countries signed Letter of Intent(LoI) to join a ECCSEL legal entity: France, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Poland, Greece, Norway and Switzerland(active observer). As the EU ERIC-regulation [3] would offer the most suitable legal framework for ECCSEL, the host country, Norway, will apply for establishing ERIC as the ECCSEL Research Infrastructure(RI)legal entity in 2017. Until the ECCSEL ERIC is approved by the European Commission(probably by summer 2017), an interim MoU agreement for the implementation phase of ECCSEL RI has been signed by 13 research institutions and universities representing the 9 countries. | 5 | Engineering osteoblastic metastases to delineate the adaptive response of androgen-deprived prostate cancer in the bone metastatic microenvironment显示文摘While stromal interactions are essential in cancer adaptation to hormonal therapies,the effects of bone stroma and androgen deprivation on cancer progression in bone are poorly understood.Here,we tissue-engineered and validated an in vitro microtissue model of osteoblastic bone metastases,and used it to study the effects of androgen deprivation in this microenvironment.The model was established by culturing primary human osteoprogenitor cells on melt electrowritten polymer scaffolds,leading to a mineralized osteoblast-derived microtissue containing,in a 3D setting,viable osteoblastic cells,osteocytic cells,and appropriate expression of osteoblast/osteocyte-derived mRNA and proteins,and mineral content.Direct co-culture of androgen receptordependent/ independent cell lines (LNCaP,C4-2B,and PC3) led cancer cells to display functional and molecular features as observed in vivo.Co-cultured cancer cells showed increased affinity to the microtissues,as a function of their bone metastatic potential.Cocultures led to alkaline phosphatase and collagen-I upregulation and sclerostin downregulation,consistent with the clinical marker profile of osteoblastic bone metastases.LNCaP showed a significant adaptive response under androgen deprivation in the microtissues,with the notable appearance of neuroendocrine transdifferentiation features and increased expression of related markers (dopa decarboxylase,enolase 2).Androgen deprivation affected the biology of the metastatic microenvironment with stronger upregulation of androgen receptor,alkaline phosphatase,and dopa decarboxylase,as seen in the transition towards resistance.The unique microtissues engineered here represent a substantial asset to determine the involvement of the human bone microenvironment in prostate cancer progression and response to a therapeutic context in this microenvironment. | Nathalie Bock Ali Shokoohmand Thomas Kryza Joan Rohl Jonelle Meijer Phong A. | 6 | Fabrication and testing of polymer-based capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers for medical imaging显示文摘The ultrasonic transducer industry is dominated by piezoelectric materials.As an emerging alternative,capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers(CMUTs)offer wider bandwidth,better integration with electronics,and ease of fabricating large arrays.CMUTs have a sealed cavity between a fixed electrode and a suspended metalized membrane.Manufacturing cost and sensitivity are limiting factors in current CMUTs that depend on the fabrication equipment and,especially,on the materials used.For widespread use of CMUTs,a much lower fabrication cost that uses inexpensive materials,which maintain or improve upon existing sensitivity,is needed.Herein,a new fabrication process is described for polymer-based CMUTs(polyCMUTs)using the photopolymer SU-8 and Omnicoat.The first ultrasound B-mode image of a wire phantom created with a 64-element linear array using synthetic aperture beamforming techniques is presented.A 12 VAC signal superimposed on a 10 VDC signal was used on the transmission side,and only a bias-tee,with no amplifiers,was used on the receiving side.The low operational voltage and high sensitivity of this device can be partially attributed to a pre-biasing condition on the membrane.By using a novel sacrificial layer combined with a top electrode embedded inside the membrane,we demonstrated that SU-8 can be used to manufacture CMUTs inexpensively.Moreover,the fabrication used relatively simple equipment,and the number of fabrication steps was reduced compared to traditional CMUT fabrication.This new fabrication process has the potential to increase the use of CMUTs in the ultrasound market,including the market for wearable transducers. | Carlos D.Gerardo Edmond Cretu Robert Rohling | 2018 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2018,4,1: | 2 |
