Circulating adhesion molecules in patients with virus-related chronic diseases of the liver显示文摘AIM: In the inflammatory state, intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) and vascular cellular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) play a key role in promoting migration of immunological cells from the circulation to target site.Aim of our study was to investigate soluble forms of these molecules in patients with virus-related chronic liver diseases, to assess their behavior in different pathologies and correlation with severity of liver damage.METHODS: Circulating ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 were assayed by EIA commercial kits (R&D System Co.,Abington, UK) in 23 patients with chronic active hepatitis (CH), 50 subjects affected by liver cirrhosis (LC) and 15 healthy controls comparable for sex and age. In patients, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were also detected by autoanalyzer.RESULTS: LC patients had significantly higher ICAM-1 values than CH patients (38.56±7.4 ng/mL vs 20.89±6.42 ng/mL; P<0.001) and these ones had significantly higher values than controls (12.92±1.08 ng/mL; P<0.001). In CH group, ICAM-1 levels were significantly related to inflammatory activity (P= 0.041) and ALT values (r= 0.77;P<0.05). VCAM-1 values were significantly increased only in LC patients (P<0.001) and related to severity of liver impairment.CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that the determination of serum ICAM-1 can be considered as an additional useful marker of hepatocellular necrosis and inflammatory activity in chronic hepatitis, while serum VCAM-1 is an indicator of liver fibrogenesis and severity of disease in cirrhosis.Cosimo Marcello Bruno Claudio Sciacca Danila Cilio Gaetano Bertino Anna Elisa Marchese Gaetana Politi Lucia Chinnici 2005World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,29:19
Platelet-rich plasma for regeneration of neural feedback pathways around dental implants: a concise review and outlook on future possibilities显示文摘Along with the development of new materials, advanced medical imaging and surgical techniques, osseointegrated dental implants are considered a successful and constantly evolving treatment modality for the replacement of missing teeth in patients with complete or partial edentulism. The importance of restoring the peripheral neural feedback pathway and thus repairing the lack of periodontal mechanoreceptors after tooth extraction has been highlighted in the literature. Nevertheless, regenerating the nerve fibers and reconstructing the neural feedback pathways around osseointegrated implants remain a challenge. Recent studies have provided evidence that platelet-rich plasma(PRP) therapy is a promising treatment for musculoskeletal injuries.Because of its high biological safety, convenience and usability, PRP therapy has gradually gained popularity in the clinical field.Although much remains to be learned, the growth factors from PRP might play key roles in peripheral nerve repair mechanisms. This review presents known growth factors contributing to the biological efficacy of PRP and illustrates basic and(pre-)clinical evidence regarding the use of PRP and its relevant products in peripheral nerve regeneration. In addition, the potential of local application of PRP for structural and functional recovery of injured peripheral nerves around dental implants is discussed.Yan Huang Michael M Bornstein Ivo Lambrichts Hai-Yang Yu Constantinus Politis Reinhilde Jacobs 2017International Journal of Oral Science2017,9,1:10
High-efficiency forming processes for complex thin-walled titanium alloys components: state-of-the-art and perspectives显示文摘Complex thin-walled titanium alloy components play a key role in the aircraft, aerospace and marine industries, offering the advantages of reduced weight and increased thermal resistance. The geometrical complexity, dimensional accuracy and in-service properties are essential to fulfill the high-performance standards required in new transportation systems, which brings new challenges to titanium alloy forming technologies.Traditional forming processes, such as superplastic forming or hot pressing, cannot meet all demands of modern applications due to their limited properties, low productivity and high cost. This has encouraged industry and research groups to develop novel high-efficiency forming processes.Hot gas pressure forming and hot stamping-quenching technologies have been developed for the manufacture of tubular and panel components, and are believed to be the cut-edge processes guaranteeing dimensional accuracy, microstructure and mechanical properties. This article intends to provide a critical review of high-efficiency titanium alloy forming processes, concentrating on latest investigations of controlling dimensional accuracy, microstructure and properties. The advantages and limitations of individual forming process are comprehensively analyzed, through which, future research trends of high-efficiency forming are identified including trends in process integration, processing window design, full cycle and multi-objective optimization. This review aims to provide a guide for researchers and process designers on the manufacture of thin-walled titanium alloy components whilst achieving high dimensional accuracy and satisfying performance properties with high efficiency and low cost.Kehuan Wang Liliang Wang Kailun Zheng Zhubin He Denis J Politis Gang Liu Shijian Yuan 2020International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing2020,2,3:10
Pseudopolyps in inflammatory bowel diseases: Have we learned enough?显示文摘Pseudopolyps are a well described entity in the literature and even though the exact pathogenesis of their formation is not completely understood, they are considered non-neoplastic lesions originating from the mucosa after repeated periods of inflammation and ulceration associated with excessive healing processes. Their occurrence is less common in Crohn's disease than in ulcerative colitis, and their overall prevalence ranges from 4% to 74%; moreover, they are found more often in colon but have been detected in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract as well. When their size exceeds the arbitrary point of 1.5 cm, they are classified as giant pseudopolyps. Clinical evaluation should differentiate the pseudopolyps from other polypoid lesions, such as the dysplasiaassociated mass or lesion, but this situation represents an ongoing clinical challenge. Pseudopolyps can provoke complications such as bleeding or obstruction, and their management includes medical therapy, endoscopy and surgery; however, no consensus exists about the optimal treatment approach. Patients with pseudopolyps are considered at intermediate risk for colorectal cancer and regular endoscopic monitoring is recommended. Through a review of the literature, we provide here a proposed classification of the characteristics of pseudopolyps.Dimitrios S Politis Konstantinos H Katsanos Epameinondas V Tsianos Dimitrios K Christodoulou 2017World Journal of Gastroenterology2017,23,9:8
Validation of a novel imaging approach using multi-slice CT and cone-beam CT to follow-up on condylar remodeling after bimaxillary surgery显示文摘The main goal of this study was to introduce a novel three-dimensional procedure to objectively quantify both inner and outer condylar remodelling on preoperative multi-slice computed tomography(MSCT) and postoperative cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT) images. Second, the reliability and accuracy of this condylar volume quantification method was assessed. The mandibles of 20 patients(11 female and 9 male) who underwent bimaxillary surgery were semi-automatically extracted from MSCT/CBCT scans and rendered in 3D. The resulting condyles were spatially matched by using an anatomical landmark-based registration procedure.A standardized sphere was created around each condyle, and the condylar bone volume within this selected region of interest was automatically calculated. To investigate the reproducibility of the method, inter-and intra-observer reliability was calculated for assessments made by two experienced radiologists twice five months apart in a set of ten randomly selected patients. To test the accuracy of the bone segmentation, the inner and outer bone structures of one dry mandible, scanned according to the clinical set-up, were compared with the gold standard, micro-CT. Thirty-eight condyles showed a significant(P<0.05) mean bone volume decrease of 26.4% ± 11.4%(502.9 mm^3± 268.1 mm^3). No significant effects of side, sex or age were found. Good to excellent(ICC>0.6) intra-and inter-observer reliability was observed for both MSCT and CBCT. Moreover, the bone segmentation accuracy was less than one voxel(0.4 mm) for MSCT(0.3 mm ± 0.2 mm) and CBCT(0.4 mm ± 0.3 mm), thus indicating the clinical potential of this method for objective follow-up in pathological condylar resorption.laura ferreira pinheiro nicolielo jeroen van dessel eman shaheen carolina letelier marina codari constantinus politis ivo lambrichts reinhilde jacobs 2017International Journal of Oral Science2017,9,3:7
Big earth data analytics on Sentinel-1 and Landsat imagery in support to global human settlements mapping显示文摘Continuous global-scale mapping of human settlements in the service of international agreements calls for massive volume of multi-source,multi-temporal,and multi-scale earth observation data.In this paper, the latest developments in terms of processing big earth observation data for the purpose of improving the Global Human Settlement Layer(GHSL)data are presented. Two experiments with Sentinel-1 and Landsat data collections were run leveraging on the Joint Research Centre Earth Observation Data and Processing Platform.A comparative analysis of the results of built-up areas extraction from different remote sensing data and processing workflows shows how the information production supported by data-intensive computing infrastructure for optimization and multiple testing can improve the output information reliability and consistency within the GHSL scope. The paper presents the processing workflows and the results of the two main experiments, giving insights into the enhanced mapping capabilities gained by analyzing Sentinel-1 and Landsat data-sets,and the lessons learnt in terms of handling and processing big earth observation data.Christina Corbane Martino Pesaresi Panagiotis Politis Vasileios Syrris Aneta JFlorczyk Pierre Soille Luca Maffenini Armin Burger Veselin Vasilev Dario Rodriguez Filip Sabo Lewis Dijkstra Thomas Kemper 2017Big Earth Data2017,1,1:3
Automated global delineation of human settlements from 40 years of Landsat satellite data archives显示文摘This paper presents the analysis of Earth Observation data records collected between 1975 and 2014 for assessing the extent and temporal evolution of the built-up surface in the frame of the Global Human Settlement Layer project. The scale of the information produced by the study enables the assessment of the whole continuum of human settlements from rural hamlets to megacities. The study applies enhanced processing methods as compared to the first production of the GHSL baseline data. The major improvements include the use of a more refined learning set on built-up areas derived from Sentinel-1 data which allowed testing the added-value of incremental learning in big data analytics.Herein, the new features of the GHSL built-up grids and the methods are described and compared with the previous ones using a reference set of building footprints for 277 areas of interest. The results show a gradual improvement in the accuracy measures with a gain of 3.6% in the balanced accuracy, between the first production of the GHSL baseline and the latest GHSL multitemporal built-up grids.A validation of the multitemporal component is also conducted at the global scale establishing the reliability of the built-up layer across time.Christina Corbane Martino Pesaresi Thomas Kemper Panagiotis Politis Aneta J.Florczyk Vasileios Syrris Michele Melchiorri Filip Sabo Pierre Soille 2019Big Earth Data2019,3,2:3

Competition between fusion-evaporation and multifragmentation in central collisions in ^(58)Ni+^(48)Ca at 25A MeV显示文摘The experimental data concerning the58Ni+48Ca reaction at Elab(Ni)=25A MeV,collected by using the CHIMERA 4π device, have been analyzed in order to investigate the competition among different reaction mechanisms for central collisions in the Fermi energy domain. As a main criterion for centrality selection we have chosen the flow angle(flow) method, making an event-by-event analysis that considers the shape of events,as it is determined by the eigenvectors of the experimental kinetic-energy tensor. For the selected central events(flow >60°) some global variables, good to characterize the pattern of central collisions have been constructed. The main features of the reaction products were explored by using different constraints on some of the relevant observables, like mass and velocity distributions and their correlations.Much emphasis was devoted, for central collisions,to the competition between fusion-evaporation processes with subsequent identification of a heavy residue and a possible multifragmentation mechanism of a well defined(if any) transient nuclear system.Dynamical evolution of the system and pre-equilibrium emission were taken into account by simulating the reactions in the framework of transport theories.Different approaches have been envisaged(dynamical stochastic BNV calculations + sequential SIMON code,QMD,CoMD,etc.).Preliminary comparison of the experimental data with BNV calculations shows reasonable agreement with the assumption of sequential multifragmentation emission in the mass region of IMFs close to the heavy residues.Possible deviations from sequential processes were found for those IMFs in the region of masses intermediate between the mass of heavy residues and the mass of light IMFs.Further simulations are in progress. The experimental analysis will be enriched also by information obtained inspecting the IMF-IMF correlation function,in order to elucidated the nature of space-time decay property of the emitting source associated with events having the largest IMF multiplicity.FRANCALANZA L ABBONDANNO U AMORINI F BARLINI S BINI M BOUGAULT R BRUNO M CARDELLA G CASINI G AGOSTINO M D' De FILIPPO V De SANCTIS J GERACI E GIUSSANI A GRAMEGNA F GUIOT B KRAVCHUK V La GUIDARA E LANZALONE G Le NEINDRE N MAIOLINO C MARINI P MORELLI L OLMI A PAGANO A PAPA M PIANTELLI S PIRRONE S POLITI G POGGI G PORTO F RUSSOTTO P RIZZO F VANNINI G VANNUCCI L 2013Nuclear Science and Techniques2013,24,5:2
