Influence of particle size and salinity on adsorption of basic dyes by agricultural waste: dried Seagrape (Caulerpa lentillifera)显示文摘Green macroalga Caulerpa lentillifera was found to have reasonable adsorption capacity for basic dyes, Astrazon Blue FGRL (AB), Astrazon Red GTLN (AR), and Astrazon Golden Yellow GL-E (AY). The initial dye concentration was in the range of 100–1,800 mg/L. The dried algal sorbent was ground and sieved into 3 sizes: S (0.1–0.84 mm), M (0.84–2.0 mm), and L sizes (larger than 2.0 mm). For all conditions examined in this work (at 25°C in batch systems), the adsorption reached equilibrium within the first hour. The kinetic data corresponded well with the pseudo second order kinetic model where the rate constant, k2, decreased as the sorbent size increased for all dyes. The adsorption isotherms followed both Langmuir and Freundlich models. Among three sorbent sizes, S size gave the highest adsorption capacity followed by M and L sizes. A reduction of sorbent size increased the specific surface area for mass transfer, and also increased the total pore volume, thus providing more active sites for adsorption. The adsorption of AB was adversely influenced by the protonation of algal surface at low pH. On the other hand, the adsorption of AR and AY could be due to weak electrostatic interaction, which was not significantly affected by pH. Increasing salinity of the system caused a decrease in adsorption capacity possibly due to the competition between Na+ and the dye cations for the binding sites on algal surface. Moreover, an increase in salinity generated a compressed electrical double layer on the algal surface which exerted repulsive force, retarding the adsorption of positive charged molecules such as the basic dyes. | Pimol Punjongharn Khanidtha Meevasana Prasert Pavasant | 2008 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2008,20,6: | 15
Batch studies of adsorption of copper and lead on activated carbon from Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. bark显示文摘Powdered activated carbon (PAC) prepared from Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehn. bark was tested for its adsorption capacity for Cu(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ). The experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of pH, contact time, initial metal concentration, and temperature. The best adsorption of both Cu(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) occurred at pH 5, where the adsorption reached equilibrium within 45 min for the whole range of initial heavy metal concentrations (0.1-10 mmol/L). The adsorption kinetics was found to follow the pseudo-second order model where equilibrium adsorption capacities and adsorption rate constants increased with initial heavy metal concentrations. The adsorption isotherm followed Langmuir better than Freundlich models within the temperature range (25-60°C). The maximum adsorption capacities (qm) occurred at 60°C, where qm for Cu(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) were 0.85 and 0.89 mmol/g, respectively. The enthalpies of Cu(Ⅱ) and Pb(Ⅱ) adsorption were 43.26 and 58.77 kJ/mol, respectively. The positive enthalpy of adsorption indicated an endothermic nature of the adsorption. | Phussadee Patnukao Apipreeya Kongsuwan Prasert Pavasant | 2008 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2008,20,9: | 6
Interleukin-1βinduces human cementoblasts to support osteoclastogenesis显示文摘Injury of the periodontium followed by inflammatory response often leads to root resorption. Resorption is accomplished by osteoclasts and their generation may depend on an interaction with the cells in direct contact with the root, the cementoblasts. Our study aimed to investigate the role of human cementoblasts in the formation of osteoclasts and the effect of interleukin(IL)-1β hereupon. Extracted teeth from healthy volunteers were subjected to sequential digestion by type I collagenase and trypsin. The effect of enzymatic digestion on the presence of cells on the root surface was analyzed by histology. Gene expression of primary human cementoblasts(p HCB) was compared with a human cementoblast cell line(HCEM). The p HCBs were analyzed for their expression of IL-1 receptors as well as of receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-B ligand(RANKL) and osteoprotegerin(OPG). In a co-culture system consisting of osteoclast precursors(blood monocytes) and p HCBs, the formation of osteoclasts and their resorptive activity was assessed by osteo-assay and ivory slices. The cells obtained after a 120 min enzyme digestion expressed the highest level of bone sialoprotein, similar to that of HCEM. This fraction of isolated cells also shared a similar expression pattern of IL-1 receptors(IL1-R1 and IL1-R2). Treatment with IL-1β potently upregulated RANKL expression but not of OPG. p HCBs were shown to induce the formation of functional osteoclasts. This capacity was significantly stimulated by pretreating the p HCBs with IL-1β prior to their co-culture with human blood monocytes. Our study demonstrated that cementoblasts have the capacity to induce osteoclastogenesis, a capacity strongly promoted by IL-1β. These results may explain why osteoclasts can be formed next to the root of teeth. | nam c-n huynh vincent everts prasit pavasant ruchanee s ampornaramveth | 2017 | International Journal of Oral Science2017,9,4: | 5
Visual detection of tropomyosin,a major shrimp allergenic protein using gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)-assisted colorimetric aptasensor显示文摘A gold nanoparticle-based label-free colorimetric assay was developed to detect the shrimp allergenic protein tropomyosin(TM),an important biomarker responsible for severe clinical reactivity to shellfish. In a gold nanoparticles(AuNPs)-tropomyosin-binding aptamer(TMBA)complex, the aptamer adsorbs onto the surface of AuNPs and dissociates in the presence of TM.In addition,AuNPs tend to aggregate in the presence of ionic salt, revealing a color change(i.e.,wine-red to purple/blue)with a shift in the maximum absorption peak from 520 nm.In the presence of specific binding TM,the aptamer folds into a tertiary structure where it more efficiently stabilizes AuNPs toward the salt-induced aggregation with a hypsochromic shift in the absorption spectra compared to the stabilized AuNPs by aptamer alone.Based on the aggregation and sensitive spectral transformation principle, the AuNPs-based colorimetric aptasensor was successfully applied to detect TM with a range of 10-200 nmol/L and a low detection limit of 40 nmol/L in water samples. The reliability, selectivity, and sensitivity of the aptasensor was then tested with food samples spiked with TM.The observed detection limit was as low as 70 nmol/L in shrimp,90 nmol/L in tofu, and 80 nmol/L in eggs, respectively. We anticipate the proposed AuNPs-based colorimetric aptasensor assay possesses a high potential for the easy and efficient visual colorimetric detection of TM. | Tushar Ramesh Pavase Hong Lin Maqsood Ahmed Soomro Hongwei Zheng Xiaxia Li Kexin Wang Zhenxing Li | 2021 | Marine Life Science & Technology2021,3,3: | 3
