| 1 | GIS-based risk analysis of debris flow:an application in Sichuan,southwest China显示文摘Debris flow is a serious geologic hazard in China.It is estimated that nationally debris flows cause up to 2 billion RMB(250 million US$) in damages and 300-600 deaths and injuries annually.To mitigate debris flow hazards,it is necessary to map,model,and identify zones of debris flow hazards and vulnerability as to inform the local people about the potential risk with a geographic information system.This research presents a regional scale case study modeling debris flow risk(hazard and vulnerability) in Sichuan Province,Southwestern China.In this area,3,290 debris flows have been identified and the spatial-temporal distribution and activity characteristics of them have been documented.Based on the available meteorological data,a Digital Elevation Model with the rate of 1:250,000 and a regional geological map,the 24-hr rainfall threshold(y) for debris flow occurrence is closely related(significant at 99% confidence level) to the index(x) defined using a geology factor(rock hardness:a) and a topographical factor(channel gradient:d) where y = 21 + 10200 / x,in which x = 2.7 × ea + 1000 × d.The discipline is constructive in developing the rainfall threshold for debris flow activity in remote mountainous areas that lack data.For a given watershed,a four-level debris flow hazard map is developed by comparing the rainfall threshold to the design rainfall intensities with 50-,20-,and 5-year average recurrence intervals,respectively.The degree of debris flow vulnerability is determined by the watershed socio-economic conditions.A four-class debris flow risk map,at the final phase of the research,is generated by combining debris flow hazards and vulnerability.With the debris flow risk assessment,the Sichuan Province is classified into the slight,moderate,severe and very severe regions,which accounts for 36%,19%,20% and 25% of total area respectively. | B. The results show that Cu and B added can accelerate the strain-induced precipitation reaction, and the effect of Cu and B is even more obvious with Cu and B combined addition or Cu content increased. The TEM analysis of precipitate engendered at the temperature of 850℃ C indicate that Nb(C,N) precipitate nucleates dominantly on the dislocation line, and grows with holding time extended while the precipitate particle size increases from 5 nm to 17 nm. | G.F. | 3 | Sustainable Management of Planted Forests in China: Comprehensive Evaluation, Development Recommendation and Action Framework显示文摘China is one of the largest countries in the world in terms of planted forests area. Planted forests play an important role in soil and water conservation, food source, timber supply and energy security, but there are still many problems waiting for immediate resolution. Based on the current development status of planted forest in China, the paper made an comprehensive analysis for the positive impact and existing problems with regard to planted forests, and then came up with policy recommendations for promoting sustainable management of planted forests, mainly including: 1) to accelerate planted forests development and improve the quality; 2) to strengthen the protection and management, and quicken the development of planted forests; 3) to enhance the scientific planning for planted forests; 4) to reinforce the management for forests harvesting so as to promote the reasonable utilization of planted forests; 5) to perfect the management system for planted forest resources and improve the managerial capacity; 6) to complete related laws and regulations and improve the policy guarantee system; 7) to reinforce the forest tenure reform and establish a sound planted forest land transference system. | 6 | Policies, Actions and Effects for China's Forestry Response to Global Climate Change显示文摘Climate change is a great concern of various countries, the public and science community, and forest plays an important role in mitigating climate change. The paper made a comprehensive analysis regarding the policy selections of China to promote forestry response to the global climate change, and elaborated the concrete actions and achievements in this regard. Policy selections include: 1) Reinforce tree planting and afforestation, increase the forested area and enhance the capacity of carbon sequestration; 2) Improve forest management and the quality of existing stands, and improve the carbon sequestration services provided by forest ecosystem; 3) Strengthen the soil protection on wetland and forestland, and exert the potentials of carbon sequestration; 4) Boost the nature protection, and conserve the biodiversity; 5) Vigorously exploit forestry bio-energy, and reduce the GHG emission; 6) Enhance the prevention and control of forest fires, diseases and pests as well as of illegal expropriation of forest land, and effectively control the GHG emission; 7) Appropriately increase the use of timber, further improve the utilization rate of timber, extend the use life-span of timber and strengthen the carbon-storing function of timber products; 8) Actively implement forestry programs for carbon sequestration and widen the financing channels for forestry development and carbon sequestration. Meanwhile, with the concrete actions in forestry response to climate change, e.g. setting up a specialized agency responsible for the response to climate change, establishing Asian-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation, launching the national evaluation of preferential development areas for forestry CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) projects, initiating the pilot projects for Afforestation and Reforestation Project under the CDM, and creating and operating China Green Carbon Fund, China has made great achievements in her response to climate change. | 8 | Primary Hyperparathyroidism:A Tale of Two Cities Revisited-New York and Shanghai显示文摘In the 1970s,with the advent of biochemical multichannel screening in the United States and other western countries,the clinical presentation of primary hyperparathyroidism(PHPT) changed from a symptomatic to an asymptomatic disorder.However,in Asian countries,like China,PHPT did not show this evolution,but rather continued to be a symptomatic disease with target organ involvement.In this paper,we revisit the clinical features of PHPT in New York and Shanghai,representative United States and Chinese cites,over the past decade.The questions we address are whether the disease evolved in China to a more asymptomatic one and,whether in the United States further changes are evident.The results indicate that while PHPT con-tinues to present primarily as an asymptomatic disease in the United States,a new phenotype characterized by normal serum calcium and high parathyroid hormone levels,normocalcemic PHPT,has emerged.Data from Shanghai demonstrates a trend for PHPT to present more commonly as an asymptomatic disorder in China.However,most patients with PHPT in China still manifest classical symptoms,i.e.nephrolithiasis and fractures.A comparison of the two cohorts shows that Chinese patients with PHPT are younger,with higher serum calcium and PTH levels,and lower 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels than patients in New York.Normocalcemic PHPT has not yet been recognized in Shanghai.In summary,although the phenotypes of PHPT in both cities are evolving towards less evident disease,sharp clinical and biochemical differences are still apparent in PHPT as expressed in China and the United States. | Jian-min Liu Natalie E. | 9 | Extractability and Mobility of Copper and Zinc Accumulated in Sandy Soils显示文摘Extractability and mobility of Cu and Zn and their relationships with 1) accumulation of Cu and Zn and 2) soil pH were studied in three sandy soils (Wabasso, Ankona, and Winder) from commercial citrus groves in Florida, USA. The soils, with a broad range of Cu and Zn concentrations, were fractionated by a modified procedure of Amacher, while Cu and Zn mobility were evaluated using column leaching. The extractability of Cu and Zn increased with decreasing soil pH. Also with increasing total soil Cu and Zn for extractable Cu in the Wabasso sand a threshold level, where the metal extraction rate increased, was noted at 100 mg kg-1, whereas for extractable Zn in the Wabasso sand the threshold level was found at 60 mg kg-1 and in the Ankona sand at 120 mg kg-1. These results suggested that the release potential of Cu and Zn was greater in the Wabasso sand than in the Ankona sand. The column leaching experiment showed that at total soil Cu or Zn concentrations < 100 mg kg-1 all leachates had low Cu and Zn concentrations. However at total concentrations > 200 mg kg-1 for Cu and > 150 mg kg-1 for Zn with decreasing soil pH, the concentrations of both Cu and Zn in the leachates increased exponentially. | 10 | Analysis on Dynamic Heterosis for Allelopathy in Rice Under Different Environment Conditions显示文摘In this study, 5 parental rice varieties with different allelopathic potentials were employed indiallel cross [P(P+ 1)/2] to get a set of genetic materials including parental lines and two generations of F1 s.The dynamic heterosis for allelopathy in rice under different environmental conditions, was analyzed by usingadditive-dominant developmental genetic model. The results indicated that heterosis in both F1 and F2 showedinhibitory effects on shoot and root length of receiver plant (Lactuca sativa L. ). Heterosis over mid-parentbased on population mean(HMP) in F2 was lower than that in differental environmental conditions, showing1/2 HMP in F1. The heterosis in rice allelopathy was much higher under the field environmental conditionswith lower temperature and weaker sunlight than that under favorable environment, implying that the allel-opthic potential could be increased by stress environment. | 11 | Effects of Lipoxygenase Null Genes of Soybean in Controlling Beany-flavor of Soymilk and Soyflour显示文摘The flavor of the soymilk and soyflour obtained from the lipoxygenase mutant isolines was concentrated by simultaneous distillation and extraction (SDE), and its constituents were identified by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Results showed that the same 24 flavor constituents were isolated in both soymilk and soyflour, and most of them were aldehydes and alcohols. Lox2 was most responsible for the production of the volatile and beany-flavor components, and Lox1 less responsible.Lox3 was least responsible and can reduce the yield of hexanal. Either Lx1 or Lx2 could significantly reduce the volatile and beany-flavor, and Lx3 could significantly increase the yield of hexanal. Primary and secondary interactions existed among the null mutant genes, and the major effects and interactions could be affected by processing conditions. The isoline with triple lipoxygenase null genes yielded the least volatile and beany-flavor components, and the isoline without the lipoxygenase gene Lx3 produced the greatest amount of the volatile and beany-flavor components. The amounts of volatile and beany-flavor components produced by the other isolines were between that of the isoline with triple lipoxygenase null genes and the isoline without lipoxygenase gene Lx3. According to the correlation analysis, the hexanal amount could be used as an index in evaluating the importance of lipoxygenase isozymes in the yield of beany-flavor compounds, and the effects of the different types of lipoxygenase null mutants in controlling beany-flavor compounds. | 16 | Winter Phytoplankton Assemblages of Coastal Yellow Sea Connected to Jiaozhou Bay,China显示文摘The daily species variation of phytoplankton assemblage of coastal Yellow Sea connected to Jiaozhou Bay in the sea-water around the Xiaoqingdao Island was studied for the three months of winter, 2003. A total of 79 taxa from four phyla, Bacil-lariophyta (52 species), Pyrrophyta (25 species), Chrysophyta (1 species), and Cyanophyta (1species) were determined. In general, the most important groups were Bacillariophyta and Pyrrophyta on cell abundance and species richness. In January, the dominant species was mainly composed of cosmopolitan species such as Skeletonema costatum, then it changed to cosmopolitan species Tha-lassiosira nordenskiodii in February, and finally, it recovered to Skeletonema costatum again in March. Cell abundance ranged from 1.02 to 130.71×103 cells L-1with a single peak on 6th Feb., and the average abundance was 28.11 ± 26.01×103 cells L-1 (n = 90) during the winter time. The trends of Shannon-Weiner diversity index and Pielou’s evenness index were contrary to cell abundance, whereas the species diversity and evenness were the lowest in February. Temperature and salinity were closely correlated to phytoplankton species composition and cell abundance. According to the variations of temperature and salinity, species sequence was obvious at the studied site. P1, P2, F1, F2 and F3 from three crosses, i. e. , Liken2/Yumai2, 85Zhong33/Wenmai6 and 85Zhong33/95Zhong459 were sown to study the genetics of grain hardness. Significant correlation was observed between hardness measured by Single Kernel Characteristic System 4100 (SKCS 4100) and Near Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy, r ranging from 0. 85 to 0.94. Chinese wheat is a mixed population in terms of hardness, ranging from very soft to very hard. For autumn-sown wheat, on average, grain hardness decreases from north to south and spring-sown wheat is dominant with hard type. Hardness is negatively associated with flour color, and its associations with flour yield and ash content differ in winter and spring wheats.
