Role of cytokines in inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), rep- resents a group of chronic disorders characterized by inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, typically with a relapsing and remitting clinical course. Mucosal mac- rophages play an important role in the mucosal im- mune system, and an increase in the number of newly recruited monocytes and activated macrophages has been noted in the inflamed gut of patients with IBD. Activated macrophages are thought to be major con- tributors to the production of inflammatory cytokines in the gut, and imbalance of cytokines is contributing to the pathogenesis of IBD. The intestinal inflammation in IBD is controlled by a complex interplay of innate and adaptive immune mechanisms. Cytokines play a key role in IBD that determine T cell differentiation of Th1, Th2, T regulatory and newly described Th17 cells. Cytokines levels in time and space orchestrate the development, recurrence and exacerbation of the inflammatory process in IBD. Therefore, several cyto- kine therapies have been developed and tested for the treatment of IBD patients.Fausto Sanchez-Muoz Aaron Dominguez-Lopez Jesus K Yamamoto-Furusho 2008World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,27:78
Different profile of cytokine synthesis according to the severity of acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the cellular synthetic ability of cytokines involved in pro- and anti-inflammatory reactions in patients with AP.METHODS: Sixty-seven patients with AP (16 severe,51 mild) and 10 controls were included in the study.Cultures of whole blood were performed in samples obtained within the first 72 h from the onset of pain.Serum levels of interleukins (IL) 6, 8, 10, and TNF-α were measured at baseline and in the supernatant of cultures with (functional reserve) or without stimulation with phytohemaglutinin.RESULTS: Basal levels of cytokines were significantly higher in patients with severe AP. A significant increase of all pro-inflammatory cytokines vs basal levels was observed in the supernatant after 24 h of whole blood cultures in patients, but not in controls. In contrast, IL-10 increased significantly in the supernatant of cultures only in patients with mild AP. Cells showed a statistically significant functional reserve for all IL in patients with mild, but only for pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with severe AP.CONCLUSION: A marked activation of immune system may be observed in patients with AP, being balanced between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in patients with mild but not severe AP. A reduced functional reserve for the synthesis of IL-10 may be observed in patients with severe AP, which might lead to a worst prognosis.Raquel Laveda Juan Martínez Carlos Mu■oz Juan Carlos Penalva Jesus Sáez Germán Belda Salvador Navarro Faust Feu Anton Mas José Ma Palazón José Sánchez-Payá José Such Miguel Pérez-Mateo 2005World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,34:24
在 laparoscopic 肝外科的快轨道的节目: 理论或事实?显示文摘 AIM:To analyze our results after the introduction of a fast-track(FT) program after laparoscopic liver surgery in our Hepatobiliarypancreatic Unit.METHODS:All patients(43) undergoing laparoscopic liver surgery between March 2004 and March 2010 were included and divided into two consecutive groups:Control group(CG) from March 2004 until December 2006 with traditional perioperative cares(17 patients) and fast-track group(FTG) from January 2007 until March 2010 with FT program cares(26 patients).Primary endpoint was the influence of the program on the postoperative stay, the amount of re-admissions,morbidity and mortality.Secondarily we considered duration of surgery, use of drains, conversion to open surgery, intensive cares needs and transfusion.RESULTS:Both groups were homogeneous in age and sex.No differences in technique, time of surgery or conversion to open surgery were found, but more malignant diseases were operated in the FTG,and then transfusions were higher in FTG.Readmissions and morbidity were similar in both groups, without mortality.Postoperative stay was similar, with a median of 3 for CG vs 2.5 for FTG.However, the 80.8% of patients from FTG left the hospital within the first 3 d after surgery(58.8% for CG).CONCLUSION:The introduction of a FT program after laparoscopic liver surgery improves the recovery of patients without increasing complications or re-admissions,which leads to a reduction of the stay and costs.Belinda Sánchez-Pérez José Manuel Aranda-Narváez Miguel Angel Suárez-Muoz Moises elAdel-delFresno José Luis Fernández-Aguilar Jose Antonio Pérez-Daga Ysabel Pulido-Roa Julio Santoyo-Santoyo 2012World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery2012,4,11:18
Rapid on-site evaluation of endoscopic-ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration diagnosis of pancreatic masses显示文摘Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)has become an essential tool for the study of pancreatic diseases.Specifically,EUS plays a pivotal role evaluating patients with a known or suspected pancreatic mass.In this setting, differential diagnosis remains a clinical challenge.EUSguided fine-needle aspiration(FNA)and fine-needle biopsy(FNB)have been proven to be safe and useful tools in this setting.EUS-guided FNA and FNB,by obtaining cytological and/or histological samples, are able to diagnose pancreatic lesions with high sensitivity and specificity. In this context, several methodological features, trying to increase the diagnostic yield of EUS-guided FNA and FNB,have been evaluated. In this review,we focus on the role of rapid on-site evaluation(ROSE).From data reported in the literature,ROSE may increase diagnostic yield of EUS-FNA specimens by10%-30%,and thus, diagnostic accuracy. However,we should point out that many recent studies have reported adequacy rates of>90%without ROSE,indicating that, perhaps,at high-volume centers,ROSE may not be indispensable to achieve excellent results. The use of ROSE can be considered important during the learning curve of EUS-FNA,and also in hospital with diagnostic accuracy rates<90%.Julio Iglesias-Garcia Jose Lario-Noia Ihab Abdulkader J Enrique Domínguez-Muoz 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,28:16
An update on iron physiology显示文摘Iron is an essential micronutrient, as it is required for adequate erythropoietic function, oxidative metabolism and cellular immune responses. Although the absorption of dietary iron (1-2 mg/d) is regulated tightly, it is just balanced with losses. Therefore, internal turnover of iron is essential to meet the requirements for erythropoiesis (20-30 mg/d). Increased iron requirements, limited external supply, and increased blood loss may lead to iron deficiency (ID) and iron-deficiency anemia. Hepcidin, which is made primarily in hepatocytes in response to liver iron levels, inflammation, hypoxia and anemia, is the main iron regulatory hormone. Once secreted into the circulation, hepcidin binds ferroportin on enterocytes and macrophages, which triggers its internalization and lysosomal degradation. Thus, in chronic inflammation, the excess of hepcidin decreases iron absorption and prevents iron recycling, which results in hypoferremia and iron-restricted erythropoiesis, despite normal iron stores (functional ID), and anemia of chronic disease (ACD), which can evolve to ACD plus true ID (ACD + ID). In contrast, low hepcidin expression may lead to iron overload, and vice versa. Laboratory tests provide evidence of iron depletion in the body, or reflect iron-deficient red cell production. The appropriate combination of these laboratory tests help to establish a correct diagnosis of ID status and anemia.Manuel Muoz Isabel Villar José Antonio García-Erce 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,37:12
Management of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease:An evidence-based clinical practice review显示文摘AIM:To build a consensus among Chilean specialists on the appropriate management of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)in clinical practice.METHODS:NAFLD has now reached epidemic proportions worldwide. The optimal treatment for NAFLD has not been established due to a lack of evidence-based recommendations. An expert panel of members of the Chilean Gastroenterological Society and the Chilean Hepatology Association conducted a structured analysis of the current literature on NAFLD therapy. The quality of the evidence and the level of recommendations supporting each statement were assessed according to the recommendations of the United States Preventive Services Task Force.A modified three-round Delphi technique was used to reach a consensus among the experts.RESULTS:A group of thirteen experts was established. The survey included 17 open-ended questions that were distributed among the experts, who assessed the articles associated with each question. The levels of agreement achieved by the panel were 93.8%in the first round and 100%in the second and third rounds. The final recommendations support the indication of lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, for all patients with NAFLD.Proven pharmacological therapies include only vitamin E and pioglitazone, which can be used in nondiabetic patients with biopsy-proven nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(the progressive form of NAFLD),although the long-term safety and efficacy of these therapies have not yet been established.CONCLUSION:Current NAFLD management is rapidly evolving, and new pathophysiology-based therapies are expected to be introduced in the near future. All NAFLD patients should be evaluated using a three-focused approach that considers the risks of liver disease, diabetes and cardiovascular events.Juan P Arab Roberto Candia Rodrigo Zapata Cristián Mu?oz Juan P Arancibia Jaime Poniachik Alejandro Soza Francisco Fuster Javier Brahm Edgar Sanhueza Jorge Contreras M Carolina Cuellar Marco Arrese Arnoldo Riquelme 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,34:11
Suzanne M.Garland Susanne K.Kjaer Nubia Muoz Stan L.Block Darron R.Brown Mark J.DiNubile Brianna R.Lindsay Barbara J.Kuter Gonzalo Perez Geraldine Dominiak-Felden Alfred J.Saah Rosybel Drury Rituparna Das Christine Velicer 王华庆 2018中国病毒病杂志2018,8,4:9
Perioperative anemia management in colorectal cancer patients:A pragmatic approach显示文摘Anemia, usually due to iron deficiency,is highly prevalent among patients with colorectal cancer.Inflammatory cytokines lead to iron restricted erythropoiesis further decreasing iron availability and impairing iron utilization.Preoperative anemia predicts for decreased survival.Allogeneic blood transfusion is widely used to correct anemia and is associated with poorer surgical outcomes, increased post-operative nosocomial infections, longer hospital stays, increased rates of cancer recurrence and perioperative venous thromboembolism.Infections are more likely to occur in those with low preoperative serum ferritin level compared to those with normal levels.A multidisciplinary, multimodal, individualized strategy, collectively termed Patient Blood Management, minimizes or eliminates allogeneic blood transfusion. This includes restrictive transfusion policy, thromboprophylaxis and anemia management to improve outcomes.Normalization of preoperative hemoglobin levels is a World Health Organization recommendation.Iron repletion should be routinely ordered when indicated.Oral iron is poorly tolerated with low adherence based on published evidence.Intravenous iron is safe and effective but is frequently avoided due to misinformation and misinterpretation concerning the incidence and clinical nature of minor infusion reactions.Serious adverse events with intravenous iron are extremely rare.Newer formulations allow complete replacement dosing in 15-60 min markedly facilitating care.Erythropoiesis stimulating agents may improve response rates.A multidisciplinary, multimodal, individualized strategy, collectively termed Patient Blood Management used to minimize or eliminate allogeneic blood transfusion is indicated to improve outcomes.Manuel Muoz Susana Gómez-Ramírez Elisa Martín-Montaez Michael Auerbach 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,8:8
Assessment of the correlation between serum prolidase and alpha-fetoprotein levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM: To determine the predictive value of increased prolidase activity that reflects increased collagen turnover in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with HCC(mean age of 69.1 ± 10.1), 31 cirrhosis patients(mean age of59.3 ± 6.3) and 33 healthy volunteers(mean age of51.4 ± 12.6) were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to evaluate the association of serum α-fetoprotein(AFP) values with HCC clinicopathological features, such as tumor size, number and presence of vascular and macrovascular invasion. The patients with HCC were divided into groups according to tumor size, number and presence of vascular invasion(diameters; ≤ 3 cm, 3-5 cmand ≥ 5 cm, number; 1, 2 and ≥ 3, macrovascular invasion; yes/no). Barcelona-clinic liver cancer(BCLC)criteria were used to stage HCC patients. Serum samples for measurement of prolidase and alphafetoprotein levels were kept at-80 ℃ until use.Prolidase levels were measured spectrophotometrically and AFP concentrations were determined by a chemiluminescence immunometric commercial diagnostic assay.RESULTS: In patients with HCC, prolidase and AFP values were evaluated according to tumor size, number, presence of macrovascular invasion and BCLC staging classification. Prolidase values were significantly higher in patients with HCC compared with controls(P <0.001). Prolidase levels were significantly associated with tumor size and number(P < 0.001, P = 0.002,respectively). Prolidase levels also differed in patients in terms of BCLC staging classification(P < 0.001).Furthermore the prolidase levels in HCC patients showed a significant difference compared with patients with cirrhosis(P < 0.001). In HCC patients grouped according to tumor size, number and BCLC staging classification, AFP values differed separately(P = 0.032,P = 0.038, P = 0.015, respectively). In patients with HCC, there was a significant correlation(r = 0.616; P< 0.001) between prolidase and AFP values in terms of tumor size, number and BCLC staging classification, whereas the presence of macrovascular invasion did not show a positive association with serum prolidase and AFP levels.CONCLUSION: Considering the levels of both serum prolidase and AFP could contribute to the early diagnosing of hepatocellular carcinoma.Sevil Uygun Ilikhan Muammer Bilici Hatice Sahin Ayse Semra Demir Akca Murat Can Ibrahim Ilker Oz Berrak Guven M Cagatay Buyukuysal Yucel Ustundag 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,22:8
Oral allopurinol to prevent hyperamylasemia and acute pancreatitis after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography显示文摘AIM:To assess the efficacy of allopurinol to prevent hyperamylasemia and pancreatitis after endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(PEP).METHODS:One hundred and seventy patients were enrolled and randomized to two groups:a study group(n=85)who received 300 mg of oral allopurinol at 15 h and 3 h before endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)and a control group(n=85)receiving an oral placebo at the same times.Main Outcome Measurements included serum amylase levels and the number severity of the episodes of pancreatitis.Serum amylase levels were classified as normal(<150 IU/L)or hyperamylasemia(>151 IU/L).Episodes of PEP were classified following Ranson's criteria and CT severity index.RESULTS:Gender distribution was similar between groups.Mean age was 53.5±18.9 years for study group and 52.8±19.8 years for controls. Also, the distribution of benign pathology was similar between groups.Hyperamylasemia was more common in the control group(P=0.003).Mild PEP developed in two patients from the study group(2.3%)and eight(9.4%) from control group(P=0.04),seven episodes were observed in high-risk patients of the control group(25%) and one in the allopurinol group(3.3%,P=0.02).Risk factors for PEP were precut sphincterotomy(P=0.02),pancreatic duct manipulation(P=0.002)and multiple procedures(P=0.000).There were no deaths or side effects.CONCLUSION:Oral allopurinol before ERCP decreased the incidences of hyperamylasemia and pancreatitis in patients submitted to high-risk procedures.Hector Martinez-Torres Xochilt Rodriguez-Lomeli Carlo Davalos-Cobian Jesus Garcia-Correa Juan Manue Maldonado-Martinez Fabiola Medrano-Muoz Clotilde Fuentes-Orozco Alejandr Gonzalez-Ojeda 2009World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,13:7
Differences in standing balance between patients with diplegic and hemiplegic cerebral palsy显示文摘Maintaining standing postural balance is important for walking and handling abilities in patients with cerebral palsy. This study included 23 patients with cerebral palsy(seven with spastic diplegia and16 with spastic hemiplegia),aged from 7 to 16 years of age.Standing posture balance measurements were performed using an AMTI model OR6-7 force platform with the eyes open and closed.Patients with diplegic cerebral palsy exhibited greater center of pressure displacement areas with the eyes open and greater center of pressure sway in the medial-lateral direction with the eyes open and closed compared with hemiplegic patients. Thus, diplegic patients exhibited weaker postural balance control ability and less standing stability compared with hemiplegic cerebral palsy patients.Valeska Gatica Rojas Guillermo Méndez Rebolledo Eduardo Guzman Muoz Natalia Ibarra Cortés Caterine Berrios Gaete Carlos Manterola Delgado 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,26:6
Gene expression changes in spleens of the wildlife reservoir species,Eurasian wild boar(Sus scrofa),naturally infected with Brucella suis biovar 2显示文摘Brucella suis is responsible for swine brucellosis worldwide.Of the five different B.suis biovars(bv.),bv.2 appears restricted to Europe where it is frequently isolated from wild boar and hares, can infect pigs and can cause human brucellosis. In this study, the differential gene expression profile was characterized in spleens of Eurasian wild boar naturally infected with B.suis bv.2.Of the 20,201 genes analyzed in the microarray,633 and 1,373 were significantly(fold change > 1.8;P < 0.01) upregulated and downregulated, respectively,in infected wild boar. The analysis was focused on genes that were over represented after conditional test for biological process gene ontology.Upregulated genes suggested that B.suis bv.2 infection induced cell maturation, migration and/or proliferation in infected animals. The genes downregulated in infected wild boar impaired the activity of several important cellular metabolic pathways such as metabolism, cytoskeleton organization and biogenesis, immune response and lysosomal function and vesicle-mediated transport. In addition, the response to stress, sperm fertility, muscle development and apoptosis seemed to be also impaired in infected animals. These results suggested that B.suis bv.2 may use strategies similar to other smooth brucellae to facilitate intracellular multiplication and the development of chronic infections. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the analysis of gene expression profile in hosts infected with B.suis bv.2,which is important to understand the molecular mechanisms at the host-pathogen interface in the main reservoir species with possible implications in the zoonotic cycle of the pathogen.Ruth C.Galindo Pilar M.Muoz María J.de Miguel Clara M.Marin Javier Labairu Miguel Revilla José M.Blasco Christian Gortazar José de la Fuente 2010Journal of Genetics and Genomics2010,37,11:6
Recent Advances in Synthesis and Properties of Hybrid Halide Perovskites for Photovoltaics显示文摘The progress made by the scientific community in emerging photovoltaic technologies over the past two decades has been outstanding. Numerous methods have been developed for the preparation of hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite solar cells. The power conversion efficiency has been up to 14% by a one-step vacuum deposition technique. A serious concern is the toxicity of the materials. In this review, several methods aimed at resolving these problems to some extent have been compiled, including eco-friendly synthesis. Further efficiency enhancements are expected following optimization, and a better fundamental understanding of the internal electron charge transfer, electron–hole diffusion to the corresponding layers, flexibility, and stability-dependent bandgaps is reported. This paper explores the green synthesis of organic–inorganic perovskites for industrialization. Concerning the above facts, a simple low-cost model called‘‘dispersed photovoltaic cells' ' is presented.C.C.Vidyasagar Blanca M.Muoz Flores Víctor M.Jimnez Prez 2018Nano-Micro Letters2018,10,4:6
Cardiometabolic health among gastric bypass surgery patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome显示文摘AIM:To examine the effect of gastric bypass surgery on cardiometabolic health among women with polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS).METHODS:Retrospective medical chart review identified women(n = 389) with PCOS who underwent Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery from 2001-2009 in one surgical practice.Separate repeated measures linear mixed models were fit using the MIXED procedureto assess mean change in cardiometabolic disease risk factors from before to 1-year after surgery and were evaluated by ethnicity [Hispanic,non-Hispanic black(NHB) and white(NHW)].RESULTS:The majority of the sample was Hispanic(66%,25% NHB,9% NHW).Mean body mass index significantly improved 1 year post-surgery for all ethnic groups(45.5 to 35.5 kg/m2 for Hispanics,46.8 to 37.7 kg/m2 for NHB and 45.7 to 36.7 kg/m2 for NHW,P < 0.001).Among Hispanic women mean total cholesterol(198.1 to 160.2 mg/dL),low-density lipoproteins(LDL) cholesterol(120.9 to 91.0 mg/dL),triglycerides(148.6 to 104.8 mg/dL),hemoglobin A1c(6.2% to 5.6%),alanine aminotransferase(28.1 to 23.0 U/L) and aspartate aminotransferase(23.5 to 21.6 U/L) decreased significantly(P < 0.001).Among NHB,mean total cholesterol(184.5 to 154.7 mg/dL),LDL cholesterol(111.7 to 88.9 mg/dL) and triglycerides(99.7 to 70.0 mg/dL) decreased significantly(P < 0.05).Among NHW,mean total cholesterol(200.9 to 172.8 mg/dL) and LDL cholesterol(124.2 to 96.6 mg/dL),decreased significantly(P < 0.05).Pairwise ethnic group comparisons of all cardiometabolic outcomes adjusted for age and type of surgery before and 1 year after surgery showed no statistical difference between the three groups for any outcome.CONCLUSION:Cardiometabolic disease risk improvements vary by ethnicity and obesity may impact glucose tolerance and liver function changes more in Hispanic women with PCOS vs non-Hispanic women.Carley A Gomez-Meade Adriana Carrillo Gabriela Lopez-Mitnik Sarah E Messiah Kristopher L Arheart Nestor de la Cruz-Muoz 2013World Journal of Diabetes2013,4,3:6
Gene expression profiling and endothelin in acute experimental pancreatitis显示文摘AIM:To analyze gene expression profiles in an experimental pancreatitis and provide functional reversal of hypersensitivity with candidate gene endothelin-1 antagonists.METHODS:Dibutyltin dichloride(DBTC) is a chemical used as a polyvinyl carbonate stabilizer/catalyzer,biocide in agriculture, antifouling agent in paint and fabric.DBTC induces an acute pancreatitis flare through generation of reactive oxygen species.Lewis-inbred rats received a single i.v.injection with either DBTC or vehicle.Spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia(DRG) were taken at the peak of inflammation and processed for transcriptional profiling with a cDNA microarray biased for rat brain-specific genes. In a second study, groups of animals with DBTC-induced pancreatitis were treated with endothelin(ET) receptor antagonists [ET-A(BQ123) and ET-B BQ788)].Spontaneous pain related mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity were measured.Immunohistochemical analysis was performed using anti-ET-A and ET-B antibodies on sections from pancreatic tissues and DRG of the T10-12 spinal segments.RESULTS:Animals developed acute pancreatic inflammation persisting 7-10 d as confirmed by pathological studies(edema in parenchyma, loss of pancreatic architecture and islets, infiltration of inflammatory cells, neutrophil and mononuclear cells, degeneration, vacuolization and necrosis of acinar cells) and the painrelated behaviors(cutaneous secondary mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity).Gene expression profile was different in the spinal cord from animals with pancreatitis compared to the vehicle control group.Over 260 up-regulated and 60 down-regulated unique genes could be classified into 8 functional gene families:circulatory/acute phase/immunomodulatory;extracellular matrix;structural;channel/receptor/transporter;signaling transduction;transcription/translation-related;antioxidants/chaperones/heat shock;pancreatic and other enzymes.ET-1 was among the 52 candidate genes upregulated greater than 2-fold in animals with pancreatic inflammation and visceral pain-related behavior.Treatments with the ET-A(BQ123) and ET-B(BQ-788) antagonists revealed significant protection against inflammatory pain related mechanical and thermal hypersensitivity behaviors in animals with pancreatitis(P < 0.05).Open field spontaneous behavioral activity(at baseline, day 6 and 30 min after drug treatments(BQ123,BQ788) showed overall stable activity levels indicating that the drugs produced no undesirable effects on normal exploratory behaviors, except for a trend toward reduction of the active time and increase in resting time at the highest dose(300 μmol/L).Immunocytochemical localization revealed that expression of ET-A and ET-B receptors increased in DRG from animals with pancreatitis.Endothelin receptor localization was combined in dual staining with neuronal marker NeuN,and glia marker, glial fibrillary acidic protein.ET-A was expressed in the cell bodies and occasional nuclei of DRG neurons in na ve animals. However, phenotypic expression of ET-A receptor was greatly increased in neurons of all sizes in animals with pancreatitis.Similarly,ET-B receptor was localized in neurons and in the satellite glia,as well as in the Schwann cell glial myelin sheaths surrounding the axons passing through the DRG.CONCLUSION:Endothelin-receptor antagonists protect against inflammatory pain responses without interfering with normal exploratory behaviors.Candidate genes can serve as future biomarkers for diagnosis and/or targeted gene therapy.Helieh S Oz Ying Lu Louis P Vera-Portocarrero Pei Ge Ada Silos-Santiago Karin N Westlund 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,32:6
Vitamin D,calcium homeostasis and aging显示文摘Osteoporosis is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitecture deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and consequent increase in fracture risk. Evidence is accumulating for an important role of calcium deficiency as the process of aging is associated with disturbed calcium balance. Vitamin D is the principal factor that maintains calcium homeostasis. Increasing evidence indicates that the reason for disturbed calcium balance with age is inadequate vitamin D levels in the elderly. In this article, an overview of our current understanding of vitamin D, its metabolism, and mechanisms involved in vitamin D-mediated maintenance of calcium homeostasis is presented. In addition, mechanisms involved in age-related dysregulation of 1,25(OH)_2D_3action, recommended daily doses of vitamin D and calcium, and the use of vitamin D analogs for the treatment of osteoporosis(which remains controversial) are reviewed. Elucidation of the molecular pathways of vitamin D action and modifications that occur with aging will be an active area of future research that has the potential to reveal new therapeutic strategies to maintain calcium balance.Vaishali Veldurthy Ran Wei Leyla Oz Puneet Dhawan Yong Heui Jeon Sylvia Christakos 2016Bone Research2016,4,3:5
Urban Park Soil and Vegetation: Effects of Natural and Anthropogenic Factors显示文摘Various soil surface components, such as trees, shrubs and biological crusts, and human recreational activities, e.g., barbecues and trampling by visitors, may divide the area of the urban park into smaller fragments/microenvironments, differentiated by their microenvironmental conditions, which may differ in soil and vegetation characteristics. The spatial changes in the soil and vegetation characteristics and their causes were investigated in an urban park located south of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, Israel. The area of the park is 0.5km2, including groves, a lake, lawns, and rest areas. Soil was sampled in nine microenvironments, of which seven were within the park:under Ceratonia siliqua trees(Cs U), under Ficus sycomorus trees(Fi U), rest area between tables under F. sycomorus(Fi B), rest area under tables under F. sycomorus(Fi T), open area with bare soil(Oa S), open area with biological crust cover(Oa C), and open area covered by herbaceous vegetation(Oa V). Two more microenvironments, planar and sloping open areas(Co P and Co S, respectively) in the vicinity of the park, were used as the controls. Electrical conductivity, concentrations of soluble ions(Mg2+, Ca2+, Na+, K+and HCO-3), p H, contents of organic carbon, calcium carbonate and moisture, and grain size distribution were determined. In addition, herbaceous vegetation cover, number and diversity of herbaceous vegetation species were measured. It was found that soil properties and herbaceous vegetation characteristics varied within the park. Soil organic carbon, electrical conductivity, soluble salts, penetration depth, and vegetation characteristics were affected by human activities, mainly in the rest area between the tables. In contrast, the above characteristics were affected by natural factors mainly in the rest of the microenvironments, which were subjected to low levels of anthropogenic intervention. The heterogeneous structure of the park, as represented by the various microenvironments, offered new habitats and promoted the preservation of natural vegetation.Pariente SARAH Helena Michaela ZHEVELEV Atar OZ 2015Pedosphere2015,25,3:4

Role of the HLA-DQ locus in the development of chronic gastritis and gastric carcinoma in Mexican patients显示文摘AIM: To determine the HLA-DQ locus in Mexican patients with Chronic gastritis and gastric adenocarcinoma. METHODS: Oligotyping for HLA-DQ locus was performed in 45 Mexican patients with chronic gastritis and 13 Mexican patients with diffuse-type gastric adenocarcinoma, and was then compared with 99 clinically healthy unrelated individuals. H pylori infection and CagA status were assessed in patients by enzyme-linked immunosor-bent assay (ELISA) method. RESULTS: We found a significant increased frequency of HLA-DQB1*0401 allele in H pylori-positive patients with chronic gastritis when compared with healthy subjects [19 vs 0%, P= 1 × 10-7, odds ratio (OR) = 4.96; 95% confidence interval (95% CI), 3.87-6.35]. We also found a significant increased frequency of HLA-DQB1*0501 in patients with diffuse-type gastric carcinoma in comparison with healthy individuals (P = 1 × 10-6, OR = 13.07; 95% CI, 2.82-85.14). CONCLUSION: HLA-DQ locus may play a different role in the development of H pylori-related chronic gastritis and diffuse-type gastric adenocarcinoma in the Mexican Mestizo population.Roberto Herrera-Goepfert Jesús K Yamamoto-Furusho Luis F Oate-Ocaa Margarita Camorlinga-Ponce Leopoldo Muoz Jorge A Ruiz-Morales Gilberto Vargas-Alarcón Julio Granados Cellular Biology Section 2006World Journal of Gastroenterology2006,12,48:4
