Risk factors associated with the development of ischemic colitis显示文摘AIM:To ascertain the role of cardiovascular risk factors, cardiovascular diseases, standard treatments and other diseases in the development of ischemic colitis(IC).METHODS:A retrospective,case-control study was designed, using matched data and covering 161 incident cases of IC who required admission to our hospital from 1998 through 2003.IC was diagnosed on the basis of endoscopic findings and diagnostic or compatible his-tology.Controls were randomly chosen from a cohort of patients who were admitted in the same period and required a colonoscopy, excluding those with diagnosis of colitis.Cases were matched with controls(ratio 1:2),by age and sex.A conditional logistic regression was performed.RESULTS:A total of 483 patients(161 cases,322 con-trols)were included;mean age 75.67±10.03 years,55.9%women.The principal indications for colonos-copy in the control group were lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage(35.4%),anemia(33.9%),abdominal pain(19.9%)and diarrhea(9.6%).The endoscopic findings in this group were hemorrhoids(25.5%),diverticular disease(30.4%),polyps(19.9%)and colorectal cancer(10.2%).The following variables were associated with IC in the univariate analysis:arterial hypertension(P= 0.033);dyslipidemia(P<0.001);diabetes mellitus(P =0.025);peripheral arterial disease(P=0.004);heart failure(P=0.026);treatment with hypotensive drugs(P=0.023);angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors;(P=0.018);calcium channel antagonists(P=0.028);and acetylsalicylic acid(ASA)(P<0.001).Finally,the following variables were independently associated with the development of IC:diabetes mellitus[odds ratio(OR)1.76,95%confidence interval(CI):1.001-3.077,P=0.046];dyslipidemia(OR 2.12,95%CI:1.26-3.57,P=0.004);heart failure(OR 3.17,95%CI:1.31-7.68,P=0.01);peripheral arterial disease(OR 4.1,95%CI:1.32-12.72,P=0.015);treatment with digoxin(digitalis)(OR 0.27,95%CI:0.084-0.857,P=0.026);and ASA(OR 1.97,95%CI:1.16-3.36,P=0.012).CONCLUSION:The development of an episode of IC was independently associated with diabetes,dyslipid-emia,presence of heart failure, peripheral arterial dis-ease and treatment with digoxin or ASA. | Joaquín Cubiella Fernández Luisa Núez Calvo Elvira González Vázquez Maria Jesús García García Maria Teresa Alves Pérez Isabel Martínez Silva Javier Fernández Seara | 2010 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2010,16,36: | 27
Nutritional value of a partially defatted and a highly defatted black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens L.) meal for broiler chickens: apparent nutrient digestibility, apparent metabolizable energy and apparent ileal amino acid digestibility显示文摘Background: The study aimed to determine the apparent total tract digestibility coefficients(ATTDC) of nutrients, the apparent metabolizable energy(AME and AMEn) and the amino acid(AA) apparent ileal digestibility coefficients(AIDC)of a partially defatted(BSFp) and a highly defatted(BSFh) black soldier fly larvae meal. The experimental diets were: a basal diet and two diets prepared by substituting 250 g/kg(w/w) of the basal diet with BSFp or BSFh, respectively. Results: Significant differences were found between BSFp and BSFh meals for ATTDC of the nutrients: BSFp resulted more digestible than BSFh, except for ATTDC of CP which did not differed between meals, while a statistical trend was observed for ATTDC of DM and EE. The AME and AMEn values were significantly(P < 0.05) different between the two BSF meals, with higher levels for BSFp(16.25 and 14.87 MJ/kg DM, respectively). The AIDC of the AA in BSFp ranged from 0.44 to 0.92, while in BSFh they ranged from 0.45 to 0.99. No significant differences were observed for the AA digestibility(0.77 and 0.80 for BSFp and BSFh, respectively), except for glutamic acid, proline and serine that were more digestible in the BSFh meal(P < 0.05).Conclusions: Defatted BSF meals can be considered as an excellent source of AME and digestible AA for broilers with a better efficient nutrient digestion. These considerations suggested the effective utilization of defatted BSF larvae meal in poultry feed formulation. | Achille Schiavone Michele De Marco Silvia Martínez Sihem Dabbou Manuela Renna Josefa Madrid Fuensanta Hernandez Luca Rotolo Pierluca Costa Francesco Gai Laura Gasco | 2017 | Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2017,8,4: | 27
Different profile of cytokine synthesis according to the severity of acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the cellular synthetic ability of cytokines involved in pro- and anti-inflammatory reactions in patients with AP.METHODS: Sixty-seven patients with AP (16 severe,51 mild) and 10 controls were included in the study.Cultures of whole blood were performed in samples obtained within the first 72 h from the onset of pain.Serum levels of interleukins (IL) 6, 8, 10, and TNF-α were measured at baseline and in the supernatant of cultures with (functional reserve) or without stimulation with phytohemaglutinin.RESULTS: Basal levels of cytokines were significantly higher in patients with severe AP. A significant increase of all pro-inflammatory cytokines vs basal levels was observed in the supernatant after 24 h of whole blood cultures in patients, but not in controls. In contrast, IL-10 increased significantly in the supernatant of cultures only in patients with mild AP. Cells showed a statistically significant functional reserve for all IL in patients with mild, but only for pro-inflammatory cytokines in patients with severe AP.CONCLUSION: A marked activation of immune system may be observed in patients with AP, being balanced between pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines in patients with mild but not severe AP. A reduced functional reserve for the synthesis of IL-10 may be observed in patients with severe AP, which might lead to a worst prognosis. | Raquel Laveda Juan Martínez Carlos Mu■oz Juan Carlos Penalva Jesus Sáez Germán Belda Salvador Navarro Faust Feu Anton Mas José Ma Palazón José Sánchez-Payá José Such Miguel Pérez-Mateo | 2005 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,34: | 24
Anti-fungal and anti-bacterial activities of ethanol extracts of selected traditional Chinese medicinal herbs显示文摘Objective:To evaluate in ritro antimicrobial activities of selected 58 ethno-medicinal plant extracts with a view to assess their therapeutic potential. Methods:A total of 58 traditional Chinese medicinal plants were carefully selected based on the literature review and their traditional use.The antimicrobial activities of ethanol extracts of these medicinal plants were tested against fungi(Aspergillus funigaius),yeast(Candida albicans),gram-negative(Acirelobacter haumannii and Pseudornnruis aeruginosa)and gram-positive bacteria(Staphglococcus aureus). The activities were tested at three different concentrations of 1.00,0.10 and 0.01 mg/mL.The data was analysed using Gene data Screener program. Results:The measured antimicrobial activities indicated that out of the 58 plant extracts,15 extracts showed anti-fungal activity and 23 extracts exhibited anti-bacterial activity.Eight plant extracts have exhibited both anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activities. For instance,Eucommia ulmoides,Pohgonum cuspidcrtum,Poria cocas and Uncaria rhineophylla showed activity against both bacterial and fungal strains, indicating their broad spectrum of activity. Conclusions:The results revealed that the ethanol extracts of 30 plants out of the selected 58 possess significant antimicrobial activities. It is interesting to note that the findings from the current study are consistent with the traditional use.A clear correlation has also been found between the antimicrobial activity and the flavonoid content of the plant extracts which is in agreement with the literature.Hence.the results presented here can be used to guide the selection of potential plant species for the isolation and structure elucidation of novel antimicrobial compounds in order to establish the structure-activity relationship. This in turn is expected to lead the way to the discovery of novel antimicrobial agents for therapeutic use. | Lin Zhang Anjaneya S.Ravipati Sundar R Koyyalamudi Sang Chul Jeong Narsimha Reddy John Bartlett Paul T.Smith Mercedes de la Cruz Maria Cndida Monteiro ngeles Melguizo Ester Jimnez Francisca Vicente | 2013 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2013,6,9: | 23
Clinical value of rapid urine trypsinogen-2 test strip, urinary trypsinogen activation peptide, and serum and urinary activation peptide of carboxypeptidase B in acute pancreatitis显示文摘AIM: To assess the usefulness of urinary trypsinogen-2 test strip, urinary trypsinogen activation peptide (TAP),and serum and urine concentrations of the activation peptide of carboxypeptidase B (CAPAP) in the diagnosisof acute pancreatitis.METHODS: Patients with acute abdominal pain and hospitalized within 24 h after the onset of symptoms were prospectively studied. Urinary trypsinogen-2 was considered positive when a clear blue line was observed (detection limit 50 μg/L). Urinary TAP was measured using a quantitative solid-phase ELISA, and serum and urinary CAPAP by a radioimmunoassay method.RESULTS: Acute abdominal pain was due to acute pancreatitis in 50 patients and turned out to be extrapancreatic in origin in 22 patients. Patients with acute pancreatitis showed significantly higher median levels of serum and urinary CAPAP levels, as well as amylase and lipase than extrapancreatic controls. Median TAP levels were similar in both groups. The urinary trypsinogen-2 test strip was positive in 68% of patients with acute pancreatitis and 13.6% in extrapancreatic controls (P<0.01). Urinary CAPAP was the most reliable test for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis (sensitivity 66.7%, specificity 95.5%, positive and negative predictive values 96.6% and 56.7%, respectively), with a 14.6 positive likelihood ratio for a cut-off value of 2.32 nmol/L.CONCLUSION: In patients with acute abdominal pain, hospitalized within 24 h of symptom onset, CAPAP in serum and urine was a reliable diagnostic marker of acute pancreatitis. Urinary trypsinogen-2 test strip showed a clinical value similar to amylase and lipase.Urinary TAP was not a useful screening test for the diagnosis of acute pancreatitis. | Jesús Sáez Juan Martínez Celia Trigo José Sánchez-Payá Luis Compay Raquel Laveda Pilar Grió Cristina García Miguel Pérez-Mateo | 2005 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,46: | 21
The timing of bowel preparation before colonoscopy determines the quality of cleansing, and is a significant factor contributing to the detection of flat lesions:A randomized study显示文摘AIM: To compare the cleansing quality of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and sodium phosphate with different schedules of administration, and to evaluate whether the timing of the administration of bowel preparation affects the detection of polyps. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-seven consecutive outpatients scheduled for colonoscopy were randomized in one of four groups to receive polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution or oral sodium phosphate with two different timing schedules. Quality of cleansing, polyp detection, and tolerance were evaluated. RESULTS: Patients receiving polyethylene glycol or sodium phosphate on the same day as the colonoscopy, obtained good to excellent global cleansing scores more frequently than patients who received polyethylene glycol or sodium phosphate on the day prior to the procedure (P < 0.001). Flat lesions, but not flat adenomas, were more frequent in patients prepared on the same day (P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: The quality of colonic cleansing and the detection of flat lesions are significantly improved when the preparation is taken on the day of the colonoscopy. | Adolfo Parra-Blanco David Nicolás-Pérez Antonio Gimeno-García Begoa Grosso Alejandro Jiménez Juan Ortega Enrique Quintero | 2006 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2006,12,38: | 19

Exosomes as mediators of neuron-glia communication in neuroinflammation显示文摘In recent years,a type of extracellular vesicles named exosomes has emerged that play an important role in intercellular communication under physiological and pathological conditions. These nanovesicles (30–150 nm) contain proteins,RNAs and lipids, and their internalization by bystander cells could alter their normal functions. This review focuses on recent knowledge about exosomes as messengers of neuron-glia communication and their participation in the physiological and pathological functions in the central nervous system.Special emphasis is placed on the role of exosomes under toxic or pathological stimuli within the brain,in which the glial exosomes containing inflammatory molecules are able to communicate with neurons and contribute to the pathogenesis of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative disorders.Given the small size and characteristics of exosomes, they can cross the blood-brain barrier and be used as biomarkers and diagnosis for brain disorders and neuropathologies. Finally, although the application potential of exosome is still limited, current studies indicate that exosomes represent a promising strategy to gain pathogenic information to identify therapeutically targets and biomarkers for neurological disorders and neuroinflammation. | María Pascual Francesc Ibánez Consuelo Guerri | 2020 | Neural Regeneration Research2020,15,5: | 14
Role of chemokines and their receptors in viral persistence and liver damage during chronic hepatitis C virus infection显示文摘Chemokines produced in the liver during hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection induce migration of activated T cells from the periphery to infected parenchyma. The milieu of chemokines secreted by infected hepatocytes is predominantly associated with the T-helper cell/Tc1 T cell(Th1/Tc1) response. These chemokines consist of CCL3(macrophage inflammatory protein-1α;MIP-1α),CCL4(MIP-1β),CCL5(regulated on activation normal T cell expressed and secreted;RANTES),CXCL10(interferon-γ-inducible protein-10;IP-10),CXCL11(interferon-inducible T-cell α chemoattractant;I-TAC),and CXCL9(monokine induced by interferon γ;Mig) and they recruit T cells expressing either CCR5 or CXCR3 chemokine receptors.Intrahepatic and peripheral blood levels of these chemokines are increased during chronic hepatitis C.The interaction between chemokines and their receptors is essential in recruiting HCV-specific T cells to control the infection. When the adaptive immune response fails in this task,non-specific T cells without the capacity to control the infection are also recruited to the liver, and these are ultimately responsible for the persistent hepatic damage. The modulation of chemokine receptor expression and chemokine secretion could be a viral escape mechanism to avoid specific T cell migration to the liver during the early phase of infection, and to maintain liver viability during the chronic phase,by impairing non-specific T cell migration. Some chemokines and their receptors correlate with liver damage, and CXCL10(IP-10) and CXCR3 levels have shown a clinical utility as predictors of treatment response outcome. The regulation of chemokines and their receptors could be a future potential therapeutic target to decrease liver inflammation and to increase specific T cell migration to the infected liver. | Juan R Larrubia Selma Benito-Martínez Miryam Calvino Eduardo Sanz-de-Villalobos Trinidad Parra-Cid | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,47: | 13
Modified activated carbon with interconnected fibrils of iron-oxyhydroxides using Mn^(2+) as morphology regulator, for a superior arsenic removal from water显示文摘The arsenic removal efficiency of iron-modified activated carbons depends greatly on the number of available iron oxide surface sites, which are given by the surface area of the anchored particles. In this sense, aiming the generation of an adsorbent with superior arsenic adsorption capacity, we developed a protocol to anchor interconnected fibrils of iron oxyhydroxides, using Mn^(2+) as a morphology regulator. The protocol was based on a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method, using bituminous based activated carbon and both Fe^(2+) and Mn^(2+) ions in the hydrolysis solution. The elemental analysis of modified carbons revealed that Mn does not anchor to the carbon. However, when Mn is included in the hydrolysis solution, the iron content in the activated carbon increased up to 3.5 wt%,without considerable decreasing the adsorbent surface area. Under specific hydrothermal conditions, the Mn^(2+) promoted the formation of iron oxide nanoparticles shaped as interconnected fibrils. This material showed a superior arsenic adsorption capacity in comparison to similar iron modified activated carbons(5 mg As/g carbon, at 2 mg As/L),attributed to the increase in quantity and availability of active sites located on the novel interconnected fibrils of iron oxyhydroxides nanostructures. | Cesar Nieto-Delgado Joel Gutiérrez-Martínez J.Rene Rangel-Méndez | 2019 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2019,31,2: | 12
Validation of Fujinon intelligent chromoendoscopy with high definition endoscopes in colonoscopy显示文摘AIM:To validate high definition endoscopes with Fujinon intelligent chromoendoscopy(FICE) in colonoscopy.METHODS:The image quality of normal white light endoscopy(WLE),that of the 10 available FICE filters and that of a gold standard(0.2% indigo carmine dye) were compared.RESULTS:FICE-filter 4 [red, green, and blue(RGB) wavelengths of 520,500,and 405 nm,respectively] provided the best images for evaluating the vascular pattern compared to white light. The mucosal surface was best assessed using filter 4.However,the views obtained were not rated significantly better than those observed with white light. The 'gold standard',indigo carmine(IC) dye,was found to be superior to both white light and filter 4.Filter 6(RGB wavelengths of 580,520,and 460 nm,respectively) allowed for exploration of the IC-stained mucosa. When assessing mucosal polyps, both FICE with magnification, and magnification following dye spraying were superior to the same techniques without magnification and to white light imaging. In the presence of suboptimal bowel preparation, observation with the FICE mode was possible, and endoscopists considered it to be superior to observation with white light.CONCLUSION:FICE-filter 4 with magnification improves the image quality of the colonic vascular patterns obtained with WLE. | Adolfo Parra-Blanco Alejandro Jiménez Bjrn Rembacken Nicolás González David Nicolás-Pérez Antonio Z Gimeno-García Marta Carrillo-Palau Takahisa Matsuda Enrique Quintero | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,42: | 12
Switchgrass Biochar Effects on Plant Biomass and Microbial Dynamics in Two Soils from Different Regions显示文摘Biochar amendments to soils may alter soil function and fertility in various ways, including through induced changes in the microbial community. We assessed microbial activity and community composition of two distinct clayey soil types, an Aridisol from Colorado(CO) in the U.S. Central Great Plains, and an Alfisol from Virginia(VA) in the southeastern USA following the application of switchgrass(Panicum virgatum) biochar. The switchgrass biochar was applied at four levels, 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%, approximately equivalent to biochar additions of 0, 25, 50, and 100 t ha-1, respectively, to the soils grown with wheat(Triticum aestivum) in an eight-week growth chamber experiment. We measured wheat shoot biomass and nitrogen(N) content and soil nutrient availability and N mineralization rates, and characterized the microbial fatty acid methyl ester(FAME) profiles of the soils. Net N mineralization rates decreased in both soils in proportion to an increase in biochar levels, but the effect was more marked in the VA soil, where net N mineralization decreased from-2.1 to-38.4 mg kg-1. The 10% biochar addition increased soil p H, electrical conductivity, Mehlichand bicarbonate-extractable phosphorus(P), and extractable potassium(K) in both soil types. The wheat shoot biomass decreased from 17.7 to 9.1 g with incremental additions of biochar in the CO soil, but no difference was noted in plants grown in the VA soil. The FAME recovery assay indicated that the switchgrass biochar addition could introduce artifacts in analysis, so the results needed to be interpreted with caution. Non-corrected total FAME concentrations indicated a decline by 45% and 34% with 10% biochar addition in the CO and VA soils, respectively, though these differences became nonsignificant when the extraction efficiency correction factor was applied. A significant decline in the fungi:bacteria ratio was still evident upon correction in the CO soil with biochar. Switchgrass biochar had the potential to cause short-term negative impacts on plant biomass and alter soil microbial community structure unless measures were taken to add supplemental N and labile carbon(C). | Charlene N.KELLY Francisco C.CALDERóN Verónica ACOSTA-MARTíNEZ Maysoon M.MIKHA Joseph BENJAMIN David W.RUTHERFORD Colleen E.ROSTAD | 2015 | Pedosphere2015,25,3: | 11
Serum leptin levels and insulin resistance are associated with gallstone disease in overweight subjects显示文摘AIM: To establish an association between the serum leptin levels and the development of gallstone disease (GD).METHODS: We carried out a non-matched case-controlled study in a university hospital in Mexico City. Two hundred and eighty-seven subjects were included: 97 cases with gallstones and 190 controls. Body mass index (BMI), fasting plasma leptin, insulin, serum lipid, and lipoprotein levels were measured. Insulin resistance was calculated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR). Unconditional logistic regression analysis (univariate and multivariate)stratified by BMI was used to calculate the risk of GD.RESULTS: The multivariate conditional regression analysis revealed a model for those patients with BMI <30. The selected variables in the model were HOMA-IR index with OR = 1.31, P= 0.02 and leptin higher than median with OR = 2.11, P= 0.05. In the stratum of BMI ≥30, we did not find a useful model.CONCLUSION: We concluded that insulin resistance and the development of GD appears to be associated with serum leptin levels in subjects with overweight, but not in obese subjects with similar metabolic profiles. | Nahum Méndez-Sánchez Luisa B Bermejo-Martínez Yolanda Vi(n|~)als Norberto C Chavez-Tapia Irina Vander Graff Guadalupe Ponciano-Rodríguez Martha H Ramos Misael Uribe | 2005 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2005,11,39: | 11
Prognostic factors for recurrence of gastrointestinal bleeding due to Dieulafoy's lesion显示文摘AIM:To analyze the effectiveness of the endoscopic therapy and to identify prognostic factors for recurrent bleeding.METHODS:Retrospective study of patients with gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to Dieulafoy's lesion(DL) from 2005 to 2011.We analyzed the demographic characteristics of the patients, risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding, endoscopic findings, characteristics of the endoscopic treatment, and the recurrence of bleeding. We included cases in which endoscopy described a lesion compatible with Dieulafoy. We excluded patients who had potentially bleeding lesions such as angiodysplasia in other areas or had undergone other gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures.RESULTS:Twenty-nine patients with DL were identified. Most of them were men with an average age of 71.5 years.Fifty-five percent of the patients received antiaggregatory or anticoagulant therapy. The most common location for DL was the stomach(51.7%).The main type of bleeding was oozing in 65.5% of cases. In 27.6% of cases, there was arterial(spurting) bleeding, and 6.9% of the patients presented with an adherent clot.A single endoscopic treatment was applied to nine patients(31%);eight of them with adrenaline and one with argon, while 69% of the patients received combined treatment.Six patients(20.7%) presented with recurrent bleeding at a median of 4 d after endoscopy(interquartile range = 97.75).Within these six patients, the new endoscopic treatment obtained a therapeutic success of 100%.The presence of arterial bleeding at endoscopy was associated with a higher recurrence rate for bleeding(50% vs 33.3% for other type of bleeding) [P = 0.024,odds ratio(OR) = 8.5,95% CI = 1.13-63.87].The use of combined endoscopic treatment prevented the recurrence of bleeding(10% vs 44.4% of single treatment)(P = 0.034,OR = 0.14,95% CI = 0.19-0.99).CONCLUSION:Endoscopic treatment of DL is safe and effective.Adrenaline monotherapy and arterial(spurting) bleeding are associated with a high rate of bleeding recurrence. | Yuliana Jamanca-Poma Antonio Velasco-Guardado Concepción Piero-Pérez Renzo Calderón-Begazo Josue Umaa-Mejía Fernando Geijo-Martínez Antonio Rodríguez-Pérez | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,40: | 11
Review of natural products with hepatoprotective effects显示文摘The liver is one of the most important organs in the body, performing a fundamental role in the regulationof diverse processes, among which the metabolism, secretion, storage, and detoxification of endogenous and exogenous substances are prominent.Due to these functions, hepatic diseases continue to be among the main threats to public health, and they remain problems throughout the world.Despite enormous advances in modern medicine, there are no completely effective drugs that stimulate hepatic function, that offer complete protection of the organ,or that help to regenerate hepatic cells. Thus,it is necessary to identify pharmaceutical alternatives for the treatment of liver diseases, with the aim of these alternatives being more effective and less toxic. The use of some plants and the consumption of different fruits have played basic roles in human health care, and diverse scientific investigations have indicated that,in those plants and fruits so identified, their beneficial effects can be attributed to the presence of chemical compounds that are called phytochemicals. The present review had as its objective the collecting of data based on research conducted into some fruits(grapefruit, cranberries, and grapes)and plants[cactus pear(nopal)and cactus pear fruit, chamomile, silymarin, and spirulina],which are consumed frequently by humans and which have demonstrated hepatoprotective capacity,as well as an analysis of a resin(propolis)and some phytochemicals extracted from fruits, plants, yeasts, and algae, which have been evaluated in different models of hepatotoxicity. | Eduardo Madrigal-Santillán Eduardo Madrigal-Bujaidar Isela álvarez-González María Teresa Sumaya-Martínez José Gutiérrez-Salinas Mirandeli Bautista ángel Morales-González Manuel García-Luna y González-Rubio J Leopoldo Aguilar-Faisal José A Morales-González | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,40: | 10

Protective effect of some vitamins against the toxic action of ethanol on liver regeneration induced by partial hepatectomy in rats显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effects of vitamins (A, C and E) on liver injury induced by ethanol administration during liver regeneration in rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats subjected to 70% partial hepatectomy were divided into five groups (groups 1-5). During the experiment, animals of Group 1 drank only water. The other four groups (2-5) drank 30 mL of ethanol/L of water. Group 3 additionally received vitamin A, those of group 4 vitamin C and those of group 5 received vitamin E. Subsequently serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), albumin and bilirubin were measured colorimetrically. Lipid peroxidation (thiobarbituric-acid reactive substances, TBARS) both in plasma and liver was measured, as well as liver mass gain assessment and total DNA. RESULTS: Compared with sham group, serum AST and ALT increased significantly under ethanol treatment (43% and 93%, respectively, with P < 0.05). Vitamin C and vitamin E treatment attenuated the ethanol-induced increases in ALT and AST activity. Ethanol treatment also decreased serum albumin concentration compared to sham group (3.1 ± 0.4 g/dL vs 4.5 ± 0.2 g/dL; P < 0.05). During liver regeneration vitamins C and E significantly ameliorated liver injury for ethanol administration in hepatic lipid peroxidation (4.92 nmol/mg and 4.25 nmol/mg vs 14.78 nmol/mg, respectively, with P < 0.05). In association with hepatic injury, ethanol administration caused a significant increase in both hepatic and plasma lipid peroxidation. Vitamins (C and E) treatment attenuated hepatic and plasma lipid peroxidation. CONCLUSION: Vitamins C and E protect against liver injury and dysfunction, attenuate lipid peroxidation, and thus appear to be significantly more effective than vitamin A against ethanol-mediated toxic effects during liver regeneration. | Carlett Ramírez-Farías Eduardo Madrigal-Santillán José Gutiérrez-Salinas Nidia Rodríguez-Sánchez Maricela Martínez-Cruz Ilse Valle-Jones Ingrid Gramlich-Martínez Alejandra Hernández-Ceruelos José A Morales-González | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,6: | 8
Soil Conservation Measures in Rainfed Olive Orchards in South-Eastern Spain: Impacts of Plant Strips on Soil Water Dynamics显示文摘Sloping and mountainous olive production systems are widespread, occupying large parts of the Mediterranean landscape prone to water erosion. Soil erosion, runoff, and soil water content patterns over a three-year period were monitored in erosion plots on a mountainside with rainfed olive (Olea europaea cv. Picual) trees under: 1) non-tillage with barley strips of 4 m width (BS); 2) non-tillage with native vegetation strips of 4 m width (NVS); and 3) non-tillage without plant strips (NT). The erosion plots, located in Lanjaron (Granada, south-eastern Spain), on a 30% slope, were 192 m2 in area. For assessing soil water dynamics in real-time and near-continuous soil water content measurements, multisensor capacitance probes were installed in the middle of plant strips and beneath the olive tree at five soil depths (10, 20, 30, 50, and 100 cm). The highest erosion and runoff rates were measured under NT, with a mean of 17.3 Mg ha-1 year-1 and 140.0 mm year-1, respectively, over the entire study period. The BS and NVS with respect to the NT reduced erosion by 71% and 59% and runo? by 95% and 94%, respectively. In general, greater available soil water content was found under BS than NVS and NT, especially beneath the olive tree canopies. These results supported the recommendation of non-tillage with barley strips in order to reduce erosion and to preserve soil water for trees in traditional mountainous olive-producing areas, where orchards cover vast tracts of land. | V. | 19 | Soluble ST2:A new and promising activity marker in ulcerative colitis显示文摘AIM:To correlate circulating soluble ST2(sST2) levels with the severity of ulcerative colitis(UC) and serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, and to demonstrate the predictive power of sST2 levels for differentiation between active and inactive UC.METHODS:We recruited 153 patients:82 with UC,26 with Crohn's disease(CD) and 43 disease controls [non-inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)].Subjects were excluded if they had diagnosis of asthma, autoimmune diseases or hypertension. The serum levels of sST2 and pro-inflammatory cytokines [pg/mL;median(25th-75th)] as well as clinical features, endoscopic and histological features, were subjected to analyses. The sST2 performance for discrimination between active and inactive UC,non-IBD and healthy controls(HC) was determined with regard to sensitivity and specificity, and Spearman's rank correlation coefficient(r).To validate the method, the area under the curve(AUC) of receiver-operator characteristic(ROC) was determined(AUC,95% CI) and the total ST2 content of the colonic mucosa in UC patients was correlated with circulating levels of sST2.RESULTS:The serum sST2 value was significantly higher in patients with active [235.80(90.65-367.90) pg/mL] rather than inactive UC [33.19(20.04-65.32) pg/mL],based on clinical, endoscopic and histopathological characteristics,as well as compared with non-IBD and HC(P < 0.001).The median level of sST2 in CD patients was 54.17(35.02-122.0) pg/mL,significantly higher than that of the HC group only(P < 0.01).The cutoff was set at 74.87 pg/mL to compare active with inactive UC in a multicenter cohort of patients.Values of sensitivity, specificity, and ability to correctly classify UC,according to activity, were 83.33%,83.33% and 83.33%,respectively.The AUC of the ROC curve to assess the ability of this molecule to discriminate between active vs inactive UC was 0.92(0.86-0.97,P < 0.0001).The serum levels of sST2 in patients with UC significantly correlated with endoscopic and histo-pathological scores(r = 0.76 and r = 0.67,P < 0.0001,respectively),and with the pro-inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-α(r = 0.69 and r = 0.61,respectively,P < 0.0001).Interestingly,we found a direct correlation between total intestinal ST2 content and serum levels of sST2,adjusted to endoscopic activity score in patients with mild(r = 0.44,P = 0.004),moderate(r = 0.59,P = 0.002) and severe disease(r = 0.82,P = 0.002).Only patients with inactive UC showed no significant correlation(r = 0.45,P = 0.267).CONCLUSION:sST2 levels correlated with disease severity and inflammatory cytokines, are able to differentiate active from inactive UC and might have a role as a biomarker. | David Díaz-Jiménez Lucía E Núez Caroll J Beltrán Enzo Candia Cristóbal Suazo Manuel varez-Lobos María-Julieta González Marcela A Hermoso Rodrigo Quera | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011,17,17: | 8
Effect of dephytinization on bioavailability of iron, calcium and zinc from infant cereals assessed in the Caco-2 cell model显示文摘AIM:To test the effect of the dephytinization of three different commercial infant cereals on iron, calcium, and zinc bioavailability by estimating the uptake, retention, and transport by Caco-2 cells.METHODS:Both dephytinized (by adding an exogenous phytase) and non-dephytinized infant cereals were digested using an in vitro digestion protocol adapted to the gastrointestinal conditions of infants younger than 6 mo. Mineral cell retention, transport, and uptake from infant cereals were measured using the soluble fraction of the simulated digestion and the Caco-2 cells. RESULTS: Dephytinization of infant cereals significantly increased (P<0.05) the cell uptake efficiency (from 0.66%-6.05% to 3.93%-13%), retention (from 6.04%-16.68% to 14.75%-20.14%) and transport efficiency (from 0.14%-2.21% to 1.47%-6.02%), of iron, and the uptake efficiency (from 5.0%-35.4% to 7.3%-41.6%) and retention (from 4.05%-20.53% to 14.45%-61.3%) of zinc, whereas calcium only cell uptake showed a significant increase (P<0.05) after removing phytate from most of the samples analyzed. A positive relationship (P<0.05) between mineral solubility and the cell uptake and transport efficiencies was observed.CONCLUSION: Removing phytate from infant cereals had a beneficial effect on iron and zinc bioavailability when infant cereals were reconstituted with water. Since in developing countries cereal-based complementary foods for infants are usually consumed mixed with water, exogenous phytase additions could improve the nutritional value of this weaning food. | Carmen Frontela Maria Laura Scarino Simonetta Ferruzza Gaspar Ros Carmen Martínez | 2009 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2009,15,16: | 7
