| 1 | Scour countermeasures for cylindrical piers using riprap and combination of collar and riprap显示文摘Various methods are proposed to control scouring around bridge piers. In the present study application of riprap alone and combinations of riprap and collar were examined experimentally for scour control around cylindrical bridge piers. Tests were conducted with seven riprap sizes and with two different sizes of collars. Empirical equations were developed for stable riprap diameter for two cases of piers with and without collar protection. Extent of riprap layer is also presented for these two cases. The results showed that in the range of b/dR≤7.5 (where b is pier diameter and dR is riprap size) using a collar reduced the stable riprap size. | 2 | Modification in Media Composition to Obtain Secretory Production of STxB-based Vaccines using Escherichia coli显示文摘Shiga toxin B-subunit (STxB) from Shigella dysenteriae targets in vivo antigen to cancer cells, dendritic cells (DC) and B cells, which preferentially express the globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) receptor. This pivotal role has encouraged scientists to investigate fusing STxB with other clinical antigens. Due to the challenges of obtaining a functional soluble form of the recombinant STxB, such as formation of inclusion bodies during protein expression, scientists tend to combine STxB with vaccine candidates rather than using their genetically fused forms. In this work, we fused HPV16 E7 as a vaccine candidate to the recombinantly-produced STxB. To minimize the formation of inclusion bodies, we investigated a number of conditions during the expression procedure. Then various strategies were used in order to obtain high yield of soluble recombinant protein from E. coli which included the use of different host strains, reduction of cultivation temperature, as well as using different concentrations of IPTG and different additives (Glycin, Triton X-100, ZnCl2). Our study demonstrated the importance of optimizing incubation parameters for recombinant protein expression in E. coli; also showed that the secretion production can be achieved over the course of a few hours when using additives such as glycine and Triton X-100. Interestingly, it was shown that when the culture mediums were supplemented by additives, there was an inverse ratio between time of induction (TOI) and the level of secreted protein at lower temperatures. | 5 | Incidence and risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity and utility of the national screening criteria in a tertiary center in Iran显示文摘AIM: To determine the incidence and risk factors of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) and the sensitivity of current screening criteria in a tertiary eye center in Tehran, Iran. METHODS: In a cross-sectional observational study, neonates weighing ≤2000 grams at birth or born <34 wk gestational age(GA) and all other infants at risk of ROP admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit(NICU) or referred to our ROP clinic were investigated. The incidence of ROP and severe ROP(i.e. patients needing treatment) were determined. The associations between risk factors and the development and severity of ROP were assessed. We also examined the sensitivity of the current national screening guideline in Iran. RESULTS: Among 207 infants, the incidence of ROP and severe ROP was 33.3% and 11.1%, respectively. Mean GA and birth weight(BW) were significantly lower in ROP vs non-ROP infants(29±2 wk vs 33±3 wk, P<0.001;1274±489 g vs 1916±550 g, P<0.001, respectively). Univariate analysis displayed significant association between ROP incidence and GA, BW, NICU admission period, blood transfusion, surfactant usage, sepsis, intraventricular hemorrhage and patent ductus arteriosus(P<0.05 for all). BW [relative risk(RR): 0.857(0.711-0.873), P<0.001], GA [RR: 0.788(0.711-0.873), P<0.001] and blood transfusion [RR: 1.888(0.995-3.583), P=0.052] were independent ROP risk factors. The sensitivity of country-specific screening guidelines was 95.7% and 100% for overall and severe ROP detection, respectively. CONCLUSION: ROP incidence is relatively high in Iran. Identifying ROP risk factors results in more accurate screening and reduces the risk of irreversible vision loss. | 7 | High efficiency visible-light-driven Fe_2O_3-xS_x/S-doped g-C_3N_4 heterojunction photocatalysts: Direct Z-scheme mechanism显示文摘Several nanoporous Fe_2 O_3-xSx/S-doped g-C_3 N_4(CNS) Z-scheme hybrid heterojuctions have been successfully synthesized by one-pot in situ growth of the Fe_2O_3-xSx particles on the surface of CNS. The characterization results show that S-doping in the g-C3 N4 backbone can greatly enhance the charge mobility and visible light harvesting capability. In addition, porous morphology of hybrid composite provides available open pores for guest molecules and also improves light absorbing property due to existence of multiple scattering effects. More importantly, the Fe_2 O_3-xSx nanoparticles formed intimate heterojunction with CNS and developed the efficient charge transfer by extending interfacial interactions occurred at the interfaces of both components. It has been found that the Fe_2 O_3-xSx/CNS composites have an enhanced photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation compared with isolated Fe_2 O_3 and CNS components toward the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue(MB). The optimal loaded Fe_2 O_3-xSx value obtained is equal to 6.6 wt% that provided 82% MB photodegradation after 150 min with a reaction rate constant of 0.0092 min^(-1) which was faster than those of the pure Fe_2 O_3(0.0016 min^(-1))and CNS(0.0044 min^(-1)) under the optimized operating variables acquired by the response surface methodology. The specific surface area and the pore volume of Fe_2 O_3(6.6)/CNS hybrid are 33.5 m^2/g and0.195 cm^3/g, which are nearly 3.8 and 7.5 times greater compared with those of the CNS, respectively. The TEM image of Fe_2 O_3(6.6)/CNS nanocomposite exhibits a nanoporous morphology with abundant uniform pore sizes of around 25 nm. Using the Mott-Schottky plot, the conduction and valence bands of the CNS are measured(at pH = 7) equal to-1.07 and 1.48 V versus normal hydrogen electrode(NHE), respectively.Trapping tests prove that ·OH-and ·O_2-radicals are major active species in the photocatalytic reaction.It has been established that formation of the Z-scheme Fe_2 O_3(6.6)/CNS heterojunction between CNS and Fe_2 O_3 directly produces ·OH as well as ·O_2-radicals which is consistent with the results obtained from trapping experiments. | Milad Jourshabani Zahra Shariatinia Alireza Badiei | 2018 | Journal of Materials Science & Technology2018,34,9: | 4 |

| 10 | A preliminary study of impact of reduced system inertia in a low-carbon power system显示文摘One of the important features of low-carbon electric power system is the massive deployment of renewable energy resources in the advent of a new carbon-strained economy.Wind generation is a major technology of generating electric power with zero carbon dioxide emission.In a power system with the high penetration of wind generation,the displacement of conventional synchronous generators with variable speed wind turbines reduces system inertia.This leads to larger system frequency deviation following a loss of large generation.In this paper,the impact of the reduction of system inertia on system frequency is analyzed as the result of the integration of a significant amount of wind generation into power systems.Furthermore,we present a preliminary study of the impact of the distribution of the inertia contributions from those online conventional synchronous generators on the rate of change of frequency(ROCOF)based on the total energy injected into the system due to the fault.The total fault energy is represented using Hamiltonian formulism.With the IEEE 39-bus system,it is shown that for a fault with the given injected total energy,clearing time,and location,the distribution of inertia contributions can significantly affect the magnitude of ROCOF.Moreover,for such a fault with different locations,the average of the magnitudes of ROCOF caused by the fault at different locations is larger when the distribution of the inertia contributions is more dispersed. | Di WU Milad JAVADI John Ning JIANG | 2015 | Journal of Modern Power Systems and Clean Energy2015,3,1: | 4 |

| 13 | Nonlinear vibration analysis of a circular micro-plate in two-sided NEMS/MEMS capacitive system by using harmonic balance method显示文摘In this study, forced nonlinear vibration of a circular micro-plate under two-sided electrostatic, two-sided Casimir and external harmonic forces is investigated analytically. For this purpose, at first, von Karman plate theory including geometrical nonlinearity is used to obtain the deflection of the micro-plate. Galerkin decomposition method is then employed, and nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) of motion are determined. A harmonic balance method (HBM) is applied to equations and analytical relation for nonlineaT frequency response (F-R) curves are derived for two categories (including and neglecting Casimir force) separately. The analytical results for three cases:(1) semi-linear vibration;(2) weakly nonlinear vibration;(3) highly non linear vibration, are validated by comparing with the numerical solutio ns. After validation, the effects of the voltage and Casimir force on the natural frequency of two-sided capacitor system are investigated. It is shown that by assuming Casimir force in small gap distances, reduction of the natural frequency is considerable. The influences of the applied voltage, damping, micro-plate thickness and Casimir force on the frequency response curves have been presented too. | 17 | Azole derivatives embedded in montmorillonite clay nanocarriers as corrosion inhibitors of mild steel显示文摘Azole derivatives such as 2-mercaptobenzothiazole(MBT) and 2-mercaptobenzimidazole(MBI) were introduced as corrosion inhibitors into the interlayer space of sodium montmorillonite clay(Na+-MMT). The corrosion protection behavior of mild steel in solutions containing MBT, MBI, MMT + MBT, MMT + MBI, Na^+-MMT, and NaCl(3.5 wt%) was evaluated using polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS). Also, the release of penetrated species into the medium from the clay nanocarriers was evaluated using ultraviolet-visible(UV-Vis) spectroscopy. Small-angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) confirmed the insertion of MBT and MBI into the inner space of the clay layers and the interaction between two organic and inorganic phases. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) was used to assess the morphology of the surface of the steel samples after the samples had been immersed for 24 h in the extraction solution. The corrosion protection in the solutions with clay nanocarriers containing MBT and MBI was better than that in solutions without MMT. | 18 | Effects of copper content on microstructure and mechanical properties of open-cell steel foams显示文摘The effects of copper content on the microstructural and mechanical properties of steel foams are investigated. Spherical urea granules, used as a water-leachable space holder, were coated with a mixture of iron, ultrafine carbon, and different amounts of copper powders. After the mixture was compacted and the space holder was removed by leaching, a sintering process was performed under an atmosphere of thermally dissociated ammonia. Microstructural evaluations of the cell walls were carried out using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. In addition, compression tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical properties of the manufactured steel foams. The results showed that the total porosity decreases from 77.2% to 71.9% with increasing copper content in the steel foams. In the foams' microstructure, copper islands are mostly distributed in pearlite and intergranular carbide phases are formed in the grain boundaries.
