Evidence of the Pan-Lake Stage in the Period of 40-28 ka B.P. on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau显示文摘The Qinghai-Tibet plateau is one of major saline lake regions in China, where saline lakes are widespread and constitute an important object of researches on the palaeoclimatic change in the region. On the basis of comprehensive investigations of the evolution of the lake’s surface and sediments on the plateau, the authors have further demonstrated the existence of a pan-lake stage (river and lake flooding stage) on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau during the period of about 40+-28 ka B.P. and analyzed the palaeoclimatic characteristics of the pan-lake period and relationships between the ancient monsoons and the uplift of the plateau since the beginning of the Quaternary. | ZHENG Mianping, MENG Yifeng and Wei LejunResearch & Development Center of Saline Lake and Epithermal Deposits,Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing 100037 | 2000 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2000,74,2: | 22

Progress and Prospects of Salt Lake Research in China显示文摘China has unique salt lake resources, and they are distributed in the east of Eurasian salt lake subzone of the Northern Hemisphere Salt Lake Zone, mainly concentrated in the regions with modern mean annual precipitation lower than 500 mm. This paper preliminarily reviews the progress made in salt lake research in China for the past 60 years. In the research of Paleoclimate and paleoenvironment from salt lake sediments, a series of salts have been proposed to be indicators of paleoclimate, and have been well accepted by scholars. The chloride-sulfate depositional regions of the west Qaidam and the east Tarim have been revealed to be the drought center of China since the Quaternary, and more than 6 spreading stages of arid climate(salt forming) have been identified. Five pan-lake periods with highstands have been proved to exist during the late Quaternary on the Tibetan Plateau. In mineral resource prospecting and theories of the forming of salt deposits: the atlas(1:2500000) of hydrochemical zoning of salt lakes on the Tibetan Plateau has been compiled for the first time, revealing the zonal distribution and transition from carbonate type to chloride type from south to north and presenting corresponding mineral assemblages for different type of salt lakes; several large continental salt deposits have been discovered and the theory of continental potash deposition has been developed, including the salt deposition in deep basins surrounded by high mountains, the mineral deposition from multistage evolution through chains of moderate or shallow lakes with multilevels, the origin of potassium rich brines in gravel layers, and the forming of potassium deposits through the inheriting from ancient salt deposits, thus establishing the framework of 'Continental Potash Deposition Theory'; several new types of Mg-borate deposits have been discovered, including the ulexite and pinnoite bed in Da Qaidam Lake, Qinghai, the pinnoite and kurnakovite bed in Chagcam Caka, Tibet, the kurnakovite bed in Lake Nyer, and the corresponding model of borate deposition from the cooling and dissolution of boron rich brines was proposed based on principles of geology, physics and chemistry. The anti-floatation-cold crystallization method developed independently has improved the capacity of KCl production to 3 million tons per year for the Qarham, serving the famous brand of potash fertilizer products. One 1.2 million ton K-sulfate production line, the biggest in the world, has been built in Lop Nor, and K-sulfate of about 1.6 million tons was produced in 2015. Supported by the new technology, i.e. brine preparation in winter-cooling-solarization-isolation-lithium deposition from salt gradient solar pond' the highest lithium production base at Zabuye Lake(4421 m), Tibet, has been established, which is the first lithium production base in China that reaches the year production of 5000 tons of lithium carbonate. The concept of Salt lake agriculture(Salt land agriculture) has been established based on the mass growth of Dunaliella and other bacillus-algae and the occurrence of various halophytes in saltmarsh and salt saline-alkali lands, finding a new way to increase arable lands and develop related green industry in salt rich environments. Finally this paper presents some new thoughts for the further research and development on salt science, and the further progress in salt science and technology will facilitate the maturing of the interdisciplinary science 'Salinology'. | ZHENG Mianping ZHANG Yongsheng LIU Xifang NIE Zhen KONG Fanjing QI Wen Jia Qingxian PU Linzhong HOU Xianhua WANG Hailei ZHANG Zhen KONG Weigang LIN Yongjie | 2016 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2016,90,4: | 15

High-Resolution Records of the Holocene Paleoenvironmental Variation Reflected by Carbonate and Its Isotopic Compositions in Bosten Lake and Response to Glacial Activities显示文摘The Early Holocene paleoclimate in Bosten Lake on the northern margin of the Tarim Basin, southern Xinjiang, is reconstructed through an analysis of a 953 cm long core (BSTC2000) taken from Bosten Lake. Multiple proxies of this core, including the mineral components of carbonate, carbonate content, stable isotopic compositions of carbonate, Ca/Sr, TOC and C/N and C/S of organic matter, are used to reconstruct the climatic change since 8500 a B.P. The chronology model is made by nine AMS 14C ages of leaves, seeds and organic matter contained in two parallel cores. The climate was cold and wet during 8500 to 8100 a B.P. Temperature increased from 8100 to 6400 a B.P., the climate was warm and humid, and the lake expanded. The lake level was highest during this stage. Then from 6400 to 5100 a B.P., the climate became cold and the lake level decreased slightly. During the late mid-Holocene, the climate was hot and dry from 5100 to 3100 a B.P., but there was a short cold period during 4400 to 3800 a B.P. At this temporal interval, a mass of ice and snow melting water supplied the lake at the early time and made the lake level rise. The second highest lake level stage occurred during 5200 to 3800 a B.P. The climate was cool and wet during 3100 to 2200 a B.P., when the lake expanded with decreasing evaporation. The lake had the last short-term high level during 3100 to 2800 a B.P. After this short high lake level period, the lake shrank because of the long-term lower temperature and reduced water supply. From 2200 to 1200 a B.P., the climate was hot and dry, and the lake shrank greatly. Although the temperature decreased somewhat from 1200 a B.P. to the present, the climate was warm and dry. The lake level began to rise a little again, but it did not reach the river bed altitude of the Konqi River, an outflow river of the Bosten Lake. | ZHANG Chengjun ZHENG Mianping Alexander PROKOPENKO Steffen MISCHKE GOU Xiaohui YANG Qili ZHANG Wanyi FENG Zhaodong | 2009 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2009,83,6: | 10
Sedimentary Characteristics and Paleoenvironmental Records of Zabuye Salt Lake,Tibetan Plateau, since 128 ka BP显示文摘This paper for the first time reveals high-resolution core records of Zabuye Salt Lake in the interior of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.According to 1346 samples taken continuously, relatively accurate ^(14)C,U-series disequilibrium and ESR ages have been obtained, thus revealing that the lake core ages from 0 to 83.63m of hole SZK02 are~800 to over 128 ka.In the paper, the lake core sedimentary characteristics(including the lithologies and mineral assemblages)are analyzed in detail and correlated with ostracod assemblages I to XX and sporopollen zones A to I,and on the basis of an integrated analysis of theδ^(18)0 values of authigenic calcium-magnesium carbonate and environmental proxies of minerals, sporopollen and microfossils in the lake core,a correlation has been made of oxygen isotope change between this lake core and the Greenland GISP2 and GRIP and Guliya ice cores, and the climate of Zabuye Salt Lake since 128 ka BP is divided into the last interglacial stage (including substages e,d,c,b and a)of oxygen isotope stage(OIS)5,early glacial stadial of the last glacial stage of OIS 4,interglacial stadial of the last glacial stage of OIS 3,late glacial stadial of the last glacial stage or Last Glacial Maximum of OIS 2 and postglacial state of OIS 1;in addition,6 Heinrich (H_6-H_1)events,Younger Dryas event and 8.2 ka BP cold event have been recognized. | ZHENG Mianping YUAN Heran LIU Junying LI Yanhe MA Zhibang SUN Qing | 2007 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2007,81,5: | 10
A Comparative Analysis of Evaporate Sediments on Earth and Mars: Implications for the Climate Change on Mars显示文摘The knowledge of Martian salts has gone through substantial changes during the past decades. In the 70th of last century, Viking landers have noticed the existence of salts on Mars. Several salt species have been suggested from then on, such as sulfates and chlorides. However, their origin was a mystery due to the lack of observations. The recent explorations and related studies at the beginning of this century revealed that the crustal composition of Mars is similar to that of Earth, and it was hypothesized that almost one third of Martian surface was covered by oceans and lakes in the early stage of Mars. The huge water bodies may have dissolved a large quantity of ions from Martian primary rocks during the whole Noachian and Hesperian epoch. After the enormous drought event happened during the late Hesperian and the early Amazonian, these dissolved ions have formed huge salts deposits and most of them were preserved on Mars until today. To date, carbonates, sulfates, chlorides have all been detected by orbital remote sensing and by landers and rovers. However, the salt mineral assemblages on Mars seems to have some differences from those on Earth, e.g., rich in sulfates and lack of massive carbonates. To explain this difference, we propose that most of the surface carbonates precipitated from the ancient oceans may have been dissolved by the later ubiquitous acidic fluids originated from the global volcanism in the Hesperian era, and formed the enormous sulfate deposits as detected, and this hypothesis seems to be supported by the evidence that most of the sulfate deposits distribute around the Tharsis volcanic province while the survived carbonates located far from it. This process can release most of the carbon on Mars to the atmosphere in the form of CO2 and then be erased by the late heavy bombardments, which might have profound influence on the climate change happened in the Hesperian age. The positive correlation between the GRS results of the potassium distributions and the distribution of chlorides on Mars, together with the high Br concentration measured from the evaporate sediments at two Mars exploration rover landing sites, indicate that the brines in the regions where the chlorides deposited may have reached the stage for potassium salts deposition, thus we propose for the first time that potassium salts deposits might be prevalent in these regions. | ZHENG Mianping KONG Weigang ZHANG Xuefei CHEN Wenxi KONG Fanjing | 2013 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2013,87,3: | 7
Geochemical processes and origin of boron isotopes in geothermal water in the Yunnan-Tibet geothermal zone显示文摘Boron concentrations and isotope compositions have been measured for 93 water samples from the hot springs and drill-holes in the geothermal system in the Yunnan-Tibet Geothermal Belt(YTGB),China.Boron concentrations range from 0.036–472.4ppm,and theδ11B values range from -16.0‰to 13.1‰,indicating the non-marine origin for each geothermal system. We observed a clear binary mixing relationship between the B concentrations and B isotope compositions in Tibet geothermal area. This relationship can be well explained by two sources,i.e.,marine carbonate rocks and magmatic rocks, for the Tibet geothermal water. No evidence supports a mantle contribution to B.In addition,we found that the precipitation only plays a dilution role for B of geothermal waters.δ11B values for the precipitation across the southern Tibetan Plateau area range from -6.0‰ to -6.8‰at least.Due to data scarcity in Yunnan geothermal area,we observed possible different boron sources from the Tibet geothermal system.Comparing it with other geothermal systems in the world,we found that the samples from YTGB have the lowestδ11B values and the largest range of B concentration, which might be related to their special geological background. On the whole, the world geothermalδ11B-Cl/B relation suggests a mixing process between marine and non-marine sources.Additionally,we suggest that B source of B-enriched geothermal waters is mainly from B-enriched crustal country-rocks,instead of mantle. | Lü YuanYuan ZHENG MianPing ZHAO Ping XU RongHua | 2014 | Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,12: | 6
Preliminary discussion of low-salinity hydrothermal fluid mineralization显示文摘REVIEWING the history of the geology of mineral deposits, we may find that in the first fifty years of thetwentieth century the magmatic-hydrothermal theory of ore deposition was the most prevalent, whichgave impetus to the development of the geology of mineral deposits. In the 1960s, the drilling of theSalton Sea geothermal field, California, the United States, and discovery and study of the Red Sea seafloor hot brines and large amounts of metal sulfides removed therefrom led to the rise of the brine theory ofmineral deposition, thus elucidating the origin of massive metal sulfides and promoted the discoveryand exploration of metal deposits. | 10 | O,H,and Sr isotope evidence for origin and mixing processes of the Gudui geothermal system,Himalayas,China显示文摘Tho Gudui geothermal field records the highest temperature at equivalent borehole depths among the lainland hydrothermal systems in China's Mainland.Located about 150 km southeast of Lhasa City, the capital of Tibet, the Gudui geothermal field belongs to the Sangri-Cuona rift belt, also known as the Sangri-Cuona geothermal belt, and is representative of the non-volcanic geothermal systems in the Himalayas. In this study,oxygen-18 and deuterium isotope compositions as well as 87Sr/86Sr ratios of water samples collected from the Gudui geothermal field were characterized to understand the origin and mixing processes of the geothermal fluids at Gudui.Hydrogen and oxygen isotope plots show both, deep and shallow reservoirs in the Gudui geothermal field.Deep geothermal fluids are the mixing product of magmatic and infiltrating snow-melt water.Calculations show that the magma fluid component of the deep geothermal fluids account for about 21.10%-24.04%;magma fluids lay also be a contributing source of lithium. The linear relationship of the 87Sr/86Sr isotopic ratio versus the 1/Sr plot indicates that shallow geothermal fluids form from the mixing of deep geothermal fluids with cold groundwater.Using a binary mixing model with deep geothermal fluid and cold groundwater as two end-members,the nixing ratios of the latter in most surface hot springs samples were calculated to be between 5% and 10%.Combined with basic geological characteristics, hydrogen and oxygen isotope characteristics, strontium concentration,87Sr/(86)Sr ratios, and the binary mixing model,we infer the 6 th-Class Reservoirs Evolution Conceptual Model(6-CRECM) for the Gudui geothermal system. This model represents an idealized summary of the characteristics of the Gudui geothermal field based on our comprehensive understanding of the origin and mixing processes of the geothermal fluid in Gudui. This study may aid in identifying the geothermal and geochemical origin of the Gudui high-temperature hydrothermal systems in remote Tibet of China, whose potential for geothermal development and utilization is enormous and untapped. | Chenguang Wang Mianping Zheng Xuefei Zhang Enyuan Xing Jiangyi Zhang Jianhong Ren Yuan Ling | 2020 | Geoscience Frontiers2020,11,4: | 5
Primary Study on Quantitative Reconstruction of Middle-Late Eocene Climate in Jianghan Basin显示文摘This paper reports our primary effort in the quantitative reconstruction of paleoclimate based on the thrine in phytoecology of the affinity parent plants in the stratigraphic pollen records. The Eocene pollen data come from our former study on the Mingjia borehole 1 in the Jianghan basin. The fluctuating trend in the parameter curve of climate shows that the climate in the Middle Eocene in the Jianghan basin was more or less comparable with that of the present 22°-26°N, characteristic of a humid, semi humid central southern subtropical climate. The annual temperature at that time dropped by 1 ℃-4 ℃ in the Late Eocene, approximately equal to that of the present 23°-28°N of northern central subtropical climate. However, the climate composite at that time, characterized by higher temperature, small annual range and big fluctuation in precipitation, was quite different from the present one. The average temperature in January in the Middle Eocene, higher than that of today, ranged between 5 ℃ and 9 ℃, indicating that no effect of winter monsoon occurred in the Middle Eocene, though such an effect may have occurred occasionally in the Late Eocene. Major temperature decline is recognized at the depth of 2 100 m in the borehole, as was indicated by the decline in average January temperature, the increase in annual range, and the increase in the deciduous broad leaved types of trees in the spore pollen assemblage. The sharp fluctuation in the annual precipitation, usually raging from 300 to 1 700 mm, was favorable for the migration and accumulation of salty deposit. When the precipitation was lower than 1 000 mm, ephemera shrub increased at the same depth as that of the salty deposit. It is, therefore, deduced that the formation of the salty deposit was attributed mainly to the dry and hot environment in the high mountains and deep basins. The small annual precipitation and the intense fluctuation are favorable for the sustainable accumulation of the salts, which is different from the present salty accumulation in the Northwest China. | Tong Guobang Liu Zhiming Institute of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Zhengding 050803 Open Laboratory of Saline Lake Resources and Environment, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing 100037 Zheng Mianping Institute of Mineral Resources, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing 100037 Research & Development Center of Saline Lake and Epithermal Deposit, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, Beijing 100037 Wang Weiming Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing 210008 | 2002 | Journal of China University of Geosciences2002,13,3: | 5
Geothermal-type Lithium Resources in Southern Xizang,China显示文摘High-temperature geothermal water has abundant lithium(Li)resources, and research on the development and utilization of geothermal-type lithium resources around the world are increasing. The Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau contains huge geothermal resources;especially,Li-rich geothermal resources in southern Xizang, southwestern China, are widely developed. The Li-rich geothermal spots in Xizang are mainly distributed on both sides and to the south of the Yarlung Zangbo suture zone.Such resources are often found in the intensely active high-temperature Li-rich geothermal fields and, compared with other Li-rich geothermal fields around the world, the Li-rich geothermal fluid in the Xizang Plateau, southern Xizang is characterized by good quality:the highest reported Li concentration is up to 239 mg/L;the Mg/Li ratio is extremely low and ranges from 0.03 to 1.48 for most of the Li-rich geothermal fluid;the Li/TDS value is relatively high and ranges from 0.25–1.14%compared to Zhabuye Li-rich salt lake(0.19%)and Salar de Uyuni(Bolivia)(0.08–0.31%).Continuous discharge has been stable for at least several decades, and some of them reach industrial grades of salt lake brine(32.74 mg/L).In addition, elements such as boron(B),caesium(Cs),and rubidium(Rb)are rich and can be comprehensively utilized.Based on still-incomplete statistics, there are at least 16 large-scale Li-rich hot springs with lithium concentration of 20 mg/L or more. The total discharge of lithium metal is about 4300 tons per year, equivalent to 25,686 tons of lithium carbonate.Drilling data has shown that the depth is promising and there is a lack of volcanism(non-volcanic geothermal system). With a background of the partial-melting lower crust caused by the collision of the Indo-Asia continent and based on a comprehensive analysis of the tectonic background of southern Xizang and previous geological, geophysical, and geothermal research, deep molten magma seems to provide a stable heat source for the high-temperature Li-rich geothermal field. The Li-rich parent geothermal fluid rushes to the surface to form hot springs along the extensively developed tectonic fault zones in southern Xizang;some of the Li-rich fluid flows in to form Li-rich salt lakes. However, most of the Li-rich geothermal fluid is remitted to seasonal rivers and has not been effectively exploited, resulting in great waste. With the continuous advance of lithium extraction technologies in Li-rich geothermal fluid, the lithium resource in geothermal water is promising as a new geothermal type of mineral deposit, which can be effectively exploited. This is the first study to undertake a longitudinal analysis on the characteristics, distribution and scale, origin and utilization prospects of Li-rich geothermal resources in southern Xizang, research that will contribute to a deeper understanding of Li-rich geothermal resources in the area and attract attention to these resources in China. | WANG Chenguang ZHENG Mianping ZHANG Xuefei WU Qian LIU Xifang REN Jianhong CHEN Shuangshuang | 2021 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2021,95,3: | 4
CCA Inferred Environmental Implications of Common Ostracods on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau显示文摘103 surface sediment samples in 71 water bodies, such as lakes with different salinity, swamps, shallow puddles and rivers on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau(QTP),were collected to study the ecological distribution of living ostracods and their environmental implications. Total of 12 genus and 45 species living ostracods are identified. According to the frequencies and abundance of ostracods occurrence,Limnocythere dubiosa,Limnocytherellina kunlunensis,Ilyocypris bradyi,Candona candida,Eucypris rischtanica and Leucocythere dilatata are the common species on the QTP,with occurrence frequency of more than 8 and abundance of more than 570 in the 71 water bodies. Among them,L. dubiosa, occurring in 28 water bodies with 2177 shells,is the most widely distributed ostracod in this research. Canonical Correspondence Analysis(CCA) indicates high correlation between species and environmental variables, suggesting that the occurrence of species is strongly related to the changes in ecological conditions of habitats. Among eight environmental factors, salinity and p H value are the most affective variables that influence the species occurrence. L. kunlunensis is positively correlated with salinity while E. rischtanica is negatively correlated with salinity. C. candida has a positive correlation with salinity,as does I. bradyi although there is not such a strong correlation. L. dubiosa displays a positive correlation with p H value. Consequently,we discuss the environmental implications of the common living ostracods on the QTP based on the CCA as well as the distribution of ostracod species in different salinity and p H values water. L. dubiosa,L. kunlunensis and E. rischtanica are euryhaline species, among which,L. dubiosa is the most adaptable species on the QTP with large occurrence in sundry salinity water and the most widely adaptive range for p H values. L. kunlunensis prefers to saline water while E. rischtanica prefers to fresh water. Both L. kunlunensis and E. rischtanica can live in water from faintly acid to alkaline,in contrast,L. dubiosa only appears in neutral and alkaline water bodies. I. bradyi only occurs in fresh water and oligohaline water with a large p H tolerance range tolerance range from weakly acidic water to alkaline water weakly acidic water to alkaline water. C. Candida lives in freshwater, with p H value above eight. The six common species reach maximum abundance in alkaline water(p H 8-10) except for Ilyocypris bradyi. | SONG Gao WANG Hailei ZHENG Mianping | 2015 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2015,89,2: | 4
The Quaternary Pan-lake (Overflow) Period and Paleoclimate on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau显示文摘Lake geomorphology and high-level lacustrine deposits since the mid-late Pleistocene are well preserved in lakes of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. According to geological surveys of 17 lake districts in different locations of the plateau, combined with interpretations of satellite images and topographic maps, the authors studied the timing of formation and scopes of the pan-lake areas of the plateau and their paleoclimate. The latest two high lake levels (overflow surfaces) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the Quaternary occurred at ~40 to 30/35 ka and ~65 to 53 ka respectively. In these time intervals, the plateau was covered by huge interconnected pan-lake systems with a total area of ~36 km2 and a total volume of lake water of >530 million km2, which are about 38 times and 659 times larger than those of the modem lakes respectively. Before this pan-lake period in the late Pleistocene, there had been three high lake levels that occurred at ~132-112 ka, 110-95 ka and 91-72/~83-75 ka respectively, suggesting that the late Quaternary climate on the plateau was unstable and changed rapidly. The ~40-30 ka high lake level also appeared in the Tengger desert north of the plateau, suggesting that there existed very strong summer monsoons from South Asia then; the variation in solar radiation with a 20,000 precessional period has special importance for the high-altitude Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in the low-latitude zone of the Earth. Around 30 ka, the pan-lakes at the peripheries of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau drained out suddenly with rapid uplift of the plateau and cooling. In a short time the huge amount of cold lake water emptied into the Indian Ocean and Western Pacific. The draining event of the pan-lakes brought about the environmental changes of rivers and lakes at peripheries of the plateau. | ZHENG Mianping YUAN Heran ZHAO Xitao LIU Xifang | 2005 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)2005,79,6: | 3
