| 2 | Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma of the liver as a rare indication for liver transplantation显示文摘AIM: To investigate the indications and outcomes of liver transplantation for hepatic epithelioid hemangioendothelioma(HEHE). METHODS: Between 1989 and August 2013, in the Department of General, Transplant, and Liver Surgery, Medical University of Warsaw, 1306 orthotopic liver transplantations(OLTx) were performed, including 72 retransplantations. Unresectable HEHE was an indication for OLTx in 10 patients(0.8% of primary OLTx), the mean age of the patients was 40.5 ± 13.3 years(range 23-65 years), and the male-to-female ratio was 2:8. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis in HEHE, hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC), and other OLTx recipients groups was performed. The differences in mortality were compared using the χ2 test. A P-value < 0.05 indicated statistical significance.RESULTS: No concomitant liver disease was found in any patient. There was no neoadjuvant chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Liver function test results were normal in most of the patients. The levels of alpha-fetoprotein, carcinoembryonic antigen, and carbohydrate antigen 19-9 were normal. In immunohistochemical staining, the neoplastic cells were positive for factor Ⅷ-related antigen, CD31, and CD34, which are endothelial cell markers, and negative for cytokeratin 19, cytokeratin 7, and HepPar-1. Nine patients were alive without tumor recurrence. One patient died 2 mo after OLTx due to septic complications. No morbidity was observed. Maximum follow-up was 11.4 years, with a minimum of 1 mo. The cumulative survival rate at the end of followup in HEHE patients was 87.5% compared with 54.3% in the HCC group and 76.3% in the other OLTx recipients group(χ2 test = 1.784, df = 2, P = 0.409).CONCLUSION: Unresectable HEHE, without extrahepatic metastases is an excellent indication for liver transplantation. | 3 | Underexpression of LATS1 TSG in colorectal cancer is associated with promoter hypermethylation显示文摘AIM:To investigate large tumor suppressor 1 (LATS1 ) expression, promoter hypermethylation, and microsatellite instability in colorectal cancer (CRC).METHODS:RNA was isolated from tumor tissue of 142 CRC patients and 40 colon mucosal biopsies of healthy controls. After reverse transcription, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed, and LATS1 expression was normalized to expression of the ACTB and RPL32 housekeeping genes. To analyze hypermethylation, genomic DNA was isolated from 44 tumor CRC biopsies, and methylation-specific PCR was performed. Microsatellite instability (MSI) status was checked with PCR using BAT26, BAT25, and BAT40 markers in the genomic DNA of 84 CRC patients, followed by denaturing gel electrophoresis. RESULTS:Decreased LATS1 expression was found in 127/142 (89.4%) CRC cases with the average ratio of the LATS1 level 10.33 ± 32.64 in CRC patients vs 32.85 ± 33.56 in healthy controls. The lowest expression was found in Dukes' B stage tumors and G1 (welldifferentiated) cells. Hypermethylation of the LATS1 promoter was present in 25/44 (57%) CRC cases analyzed. LATS1 promoter hypermethylation was strongly associated with decreased gene expression; methylated cases showed 162× lower expression of LATS1 than unmethylated cases. Although high-grade MSI (mutation in all three markers) was found in 14/84 (17%) cases and low-grade MSI (mutation in 1-2 markers) was found in 30/84 (36%) cases, we found no association with LATS1 expression. CONCLUSION:Decreased expression of LATS1 in CRC was associated with promoter hypermethylation, but not MSI status. | 4 | Modeling of particle transport and combustion phenomena in a large-scale circulating fluidized bed boiler using a hybrid Euler-Lagrange approach显示文摘The constantly developing fluidized combustion technology has become competitive with a conventional pulverized coal(PC) combustion.Circulating fluidized bed(CFB) boilers can be a good alternative to PC boilers due to their robustness and lower sensitivity to the fuel quality.However,appropriate engineering tools that can be used to model and optimize the construction and operating parameters of a CFB boiler still require development.This paper presents the application of a relatively novel hybrid Euler-Lagrange approach to model the dense gas-solid flow combined with a combustion process in a large-scale industrial CFB boiler.In this work,this complex flow has been resolved by applying the ANSYS FLUENT 14.0commercial computational fluid dynamics(CFD) code.To accurately resolve the multiphase flow,the original CFD code has been extended by additional user-defined functions.These functions were used to control the boiler mass load,particle recirculation process(simplified boiler geometry),and interphase hydrodynamic properties.This work was split into two parts.In the first part,which is referred to as pseudo combustion,the combustion process was not directly simulated.Instead,the effect of the chemical reactions was simulated by modifying the density of the continuous phase so that it corresponded to the mean temperature and composition of the flue gases.In this stage,the particle transport was simulated using the standard Euler-Euler and novel hybrid Euler-Lagrange approaches.The obtained results were compared against measured data,and both models were compared to each other.In the second part,the numerical model was enhanced by including the chemistry and physics of combustion.To the best of the authors' knowledge,the use of the hybrid Euler-Lagrange approach to model combustion is a new engineering application of this model.In this work,the combustion process was modeled for air-fuel combustion.The simulation results were compared with experimental data.The performed numerical simulations showed the applicability of the hybrid dense discrete phase model approach to model the combustion process in large-scale industrial CFB boilers. | Wojciech P.Adamczyk Gabriel Wecel Marcin Klajny Pawel Kozolub Adam Klimanek Ryszard A.Bialecki | 2014 | Particuology2014,12,5: | 7 |

| 6 | Pioglitazone, a specific ligand of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma, protects pancreas against acute cerulein-induced pancreatitis显示文摘ABM: To determine the effect of pioglitazone, a specific peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ(PPARγ) ligand, on the development of acute pancreatitis (AP) and on the expression of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) in the pancreas. METHODS: AP was induced in rats by subcutaneous infusion of cerulein for 5 h. Pancreatic blood flow was measured by laser Doppler flowmetry. Plasma lipase activity, interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-10 were determined, Pancreatic weight and histology were evaluated and pancreatic DNA synthesis and blood flow as well as pancreatic mRNA for IL-1β and HSP70 were assessed in rats treated with pioglitazone alone or in combination with cerulein. RESULTS: Pioglitazone administered (10-100 mg/kg i.g.) 30 min before cerulein, attenuated dose-dependently the pancreatic tissue damage in cerulein-induced pancreatitis (CIP) as demonstrated by the improvement of pancreatic histology, reduction in plasma lipase activity, plasma concentration of pro-inflammatory IL-1β and its gene expression in the pancreas and attenuation of the pancreatitis-evoked fall in pancreatic blood flow. CIP increased pancreatic HSP70 mRNA and protein expression in the pancreas and this effect was enhanced by pioglitazone treatment. CONCLUSION: Pioglitazone attenuates CIP and the beneficial effect of this pioglitazone is multifactorial probably due to its anti-inflammatory activities, to the suppression of IL-1β and to the over-expression of HSP70. | 9 | Fatty acid changes help to better understand regression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease显示文摘AIM: To investigate whether liver steatosis reduction due to a six-month dietary intervention results in significant changes in the concentrations of fatty acids.METHODS: A group of 35 Caucasian individuals diagnosed with different levels of steatosis were prospectively enrolled in the present study.Analysis of the fatty acid profiles was performed according to changes in liver steatosis(liver steatosis reduction by one or two degrees) after a six-month dietary intervention.The diet helped reduce body mass in obese and overweight patients,and stabilize both glycemia and dyslipidemia.Fatty acids were extracted according to the Folch method and analyzed by gas chromatography.RESULTS: This study showed significant changes in fatty acid profiles in patients who had reduced liver steatosis by one as well as two degrees.A reduction in liver steatosis by one degree caused a significant increase in the level of the n-3 family: eicosapentaenoic acid(P < 0.055),docosapentaenoic acid-C 22:5(P < 0.05) and docosahexaenoic acid(P < 0.05).A reduction in liver steatosis by two degrees caused a significant decrease in serum palmitoleic acid-C 16:1(P < 0.05).CONCLUSION: Liver steatosis reduction is associated with changes in fatty acid profiles,and these changes may reflect an alteration in fatty acid synthesis and metabolism.These findings may help better understand regression of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. | Dominika Maciejewska Arleta Drozd Piotr Ossowski Karina Ryterska Dominika Jamio-Milc Marcin Banaszczak Joanna Raszeja-Wyszomirska Magorzata Kaczorowska Anna Sabinicz Ewa Stachowska | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,1: | 4 |

| 14 | Noninvasive ventilation in trauma显示文摘Trauma patients are a diverse population with heterogeneous needs for ventilatory support. This requirement depends mainly on the severity of their ventilatory dysfunction, degree of deterioration in gaseous exchange, any associated injuries, and the individual feasibility of potentially using a noninvasive ventilation approach. Noninvasive ventilation may reduce the need to intubate patients with traumarelated hypoxemia. It is well-known that these patientsare at increased risk to develop hypoxemic respiratory failure which may or may not be associated with hypercapnia. Hypoxemia in these patients is due to ventilation perfusion mismatching and right to left shunt because of lung contusion, atelectasis, an inability to clear secretions as well as pneumothorax and/or hemothorax, all of which are common in trauma patients. Noninvasive ventilation has been tried in these patients in order to avoid the complications related to endotracheal intubation, mainly ventilator-associated pneumonia. The potential usefulness of noninvasive ventilation in the ventilatory management of trauma patients, though reported in various studies, has not been sufficiently investigated on a large scale. According to the British Thoracic Society guidelines, the indications and efficacy of noninvasive ventilation treatment in respiratory distress induced by trauma have thus far been inconsistent and merely received a low grade recommendation. The nanophosphors and nanocomposites were obtained by various methods, such as co-precipitation in the presence of Triton X-100 and micelle synthesis with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA) as organic modifiers/surfactants. | 16 | Correlations between skin lesions induced by anti-tumor necrosis factor-α and selected cytokines in Crohn's disease patients显示文摘AIM:To investigate the correlation between the appearance of skin lesions and concentration of interleukin(IL)-17A,IL-23 and interferon-γ(IFN-γ)in Crohn’s disease(CD)patients during anti-tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α)therapy METHODS:A prospective study included 30 adult patients with CD of Caucasian origin(19 men and 11women;mean age±SD 32.0±8.6 years)during biological therapy with anti-TNF-αantibodies from January2012 to March 2013.Eighteen patients were treated with infliximab,seven with adalimumab and five withcertolizumab.Inclusion criteria were exacerbation of the underlying disease,Crohn’s Disease Activity Index over 300 and the ineffectiveness of previously used non-biological therapies.Patients with a history of psoriasis,atopic dermatitis and other autoimmune skin lesions were excluded from the study.The control group consisted of 12 healthy subjects.A diagnostic survey was carried out,blood tests and careful skin examination were performed,and the serum levels of IL-17,IL-23 and IFN-γwere measured using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays technique.Dermatoses that have developed in the course of biological therapy in patients who had no pre-existing skin lesions of similar character were qualified as skin lesions induced by antiTNF-αtherapy.RESULTS:Skin manifestations occurred in 18 of CD patients during the anti-TNF-αtherapy(60%),in the average time of 10.16±3.42 mo following the beginning of the 52-wk treatment cycle.Skin lesions observed in CD patients during biological therapy included psoriasiform lesions(44.4%),and eczema forms lesions(22.2%).In CD patients with drug induced skin lesions significantly higher levels of hemoglobin(13.3±1.5 g/dL vs 10.8±1.9 g/dL,P=0.018)and hematocrit(39.9%±4.5%vs 34.3%±5.4%,P=0.01),as well as a significantly lower level of platelets(268±62×103/μL vs 408±239×103/μL,P=0.046)was observed compared with CD patients without skin manifestations.The concentrations of IL-17A and IL-23in CD patients with skin lesions developed under antiTNF-αtherapy were significantly higher compared to those in patients without lesions(IL-17A:39.01±7.03pg/mL vs 25.71±4.90 pg/mL,P=0.00004;IL-23:408.78±94.13 pg/mL vs 312.15±76.24 pg/mL,P=0.00556).CONCLUSION:Skin lesions in CD patients during bio-logical therapy may result from significantly increased concentrations of IL-17A and IL-23,which are strongly associated with TNF-α/Th1 immune pathways. | Marcin Wodarczyk Aleksandra Sobolewska Bartosz Wójcik Karolina Loga Jakub Fichna Maria Wisniewska-Jarosińska | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,22: | 2 |

| 18 | Synthesis of luminescent KY_3F_(10) nanopowder multi-doped with lanthanide ions by a co-precipitation method显示文摘A series of KY_3F_(10) nanophosphors doped with Gd^(3+), Ce^(3+) and Eu^(3+) ions were obtained with the use of a co-precipitation method. The resulting products were white precipitates, consisting of spherical particles with diameter about 150–200 nm, which was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy(TEM) technique. Powder X-ray diffraction(XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDX) measurements confirmed appropriate structures of the nanoparticles obtained. Spectroscopic properties of the products were examined on the basis of the measured excitation/emission spectra and luminescence decay curves. The synthesized samples showed orange-red luminescence, characteristic for Eu^(3+) ions. The reaction process was performed in required alkaline pH adjusted with the use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid(EDTA) and potassium hydroxide.
