| 1 | Responses of Soil Microbial Community Structure and Diversity to Agricultural Deintensification显示文摘Using a scheme of agricultural fields with progressively less intensive management (deintensification), different manage- ment practices in six agroecosystems located near Goldsboro, NC, USA were tested in a large-scale experiment, including two cash-grain cropping systems employing either tillage (CT) or no-tillage (NT), an organic farming system (OR), an integrated cropping system with animals (IN), a successional field (SU), and a plantation woodlot (WO). Microbial phos- pholipid fatty acid (PLFA) profiles and substrate utilization patterns (BIOLOG ECO plates) were measured to examine the effects of deintensification on the structure and diversity of soil microbial communities. Principle component analyses of PLFA and BIOLOG data showed that the microbial community structure diverged among the soils of the six systems. Lower microbial diversity was found in lowly managed ecosystem than that in intensive and moderately managed agro- ecosystems, and both fungal contribution to the total identified PLFAs and the ratio of microbial biomass C/N increased along with agricultural deintensification. Significantly higher ratios of C/N (P < 0.05) were found in the WO and SU systems, and for fungal/bacterial PLFAs in the WO system (P < 0.05). There were also significant decreases (P < 0.05) along with agricultural deintensification for contributions of total bacterial and gram positive (G+) bacterial PLFAs. | 2 | Differential response of tomato genotypes to Xanthomonas-specific pathogen-associated molecular patterns and correlation with bacterial spot (Xanthomonas perforans) resistance显示文摘Plants depend on innate immune responses to retard the initial spread of pathogens entering through stomata,hydathodes or injuries.These responses are triggered by conserved patterns in pathogen-encoded molecules known as pathogen-associated molecular patterns(PAMPs).Production of reactive oxygen species(ROS)is one of the first responses,and the resulting‘oxidative burst’is considered to be a first line of defense.In this study,we conducted association analyses between ROS production and bacterial spot(BS;Xanthomonas spp.)resistance in 63 genotypes of tomato(Solanum lycopersicum L.).A luminol-based assay was performed on leaf tissues that had been treated with a flagellin 22(flg22),flagellin 28 and a Xanthomonas-specific flg22(flg22-Xac)peptide,to measure PAMP-induced ROS production in each genotype.These genotypes were also assessed for BS disease response by inoculation with Xanthomonas perforans,race T4.Although there was no consistent relationship between peptides used and host response to the BS,there was a significant negative correlation(r=−0.25,P<0.05)between foliar disease severity and ROS production,when flg22-Xac was used.This response could potentially be used to identify the Xanthomonas-specific PRR allele in tomato,and eventually PAMP-triggered immunity loci could be mapped in a segregating population.This has potential significance in tomato improvement. | Krishna Bhattarai Frank J Louws John D Williamson Dilip R Panthee | 2016 | Horticulture Research2016,3,1: | 3 |
| 3 | Chronic antiepileptic drug use and functional network efficiency: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study显示文摘AIM To increase our insight in the neuronal mechanisms underlying cognitive side-effects of antiepileptic drug(AED) treatment.METHODS The relation between functional magnetic resonance-acquired brain network measures, AED use, and cognitive function was investigated. Three groups of patients with epilepsy with a different risk profile for developing cognitive side effects were included: A 'low risk' category(lamotrigine or levetiracetam, n=16), an 'intermediate risk' category(carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenytoin, or valproate, n=34) and a 'high risk' category(topiramate, n=5). Brain connectivity was assessed using resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging and graph theoretical network analysis. The Computerized Visual Searching Task was used to measure central information processing speed, a common cognitive side effect of AED treatment. RESULTS Central information processing speed was lower in patients taking AEDs from the intermediate and high risk categories, compared with patients from the low risk category. The effect of risk category on global efficiency was significant(P < 0.05, ANCOVA), with a significantly higher global efficiency for patient from the low category compared with the high risk category(P < 0.05, post-hoc test). Risk category had no significant effect on the clustering coefficient(ANCOVA, P > 0.2). Also no significant associations between information processing speed and global efficiency or the clustering coefficient(linear regression analysis, P > 0.15) were observed. | 4 | Correlation between expectations of recovery and injury severity perception in whiplash-associated disorders显示文摘Objective:To assess the correlation between expectations of recovery and whiplash patients' perceptions of injury severity using a simplified instrument.Expectations of recovery have been shown to predict rate of recovery from whiplash injury in population-based studies.The perception of having more severe pathology or more ominous diagnostic labels has also been associated with a worse prognosis.Methods:Consecutive patients with whiplash-associated disorder grade 1 or 2,presenting in the acute stage to a primary care centre,were asked 'do you think that your injury will…' with response options 'get better soon;get better slowly;never get better;don't know.' Injury severity perception (ISP) was measured with a numerical rating scale which ranged from 0-10,on which subjects were asked to rate how severe (in terms of damage) they thought their injury was.The anchors were labeled 'no damage' (0) and 'severe,and maybe permanent damage' (10).The primary outcome measure was the correlation between the subject's ISP score and expectation of recovery.Results:A total of 94 subjects (34 males,60 females,and mean age (40.6±10.0) years,range 19-60 years) were included.The initial responses to expectation of recovery were:get better soon (29/94);get better slowly (22/94);never get better (11/94);don't know (32/94).The mean ISP score was 4.9±1.7 (range 2-9 out of 10).There was a high correlation between expectations and ISP scores (Spearman's rank correlation coefficient 0.68).Those who expected to recover soon and those who expected to get better slowly had the lowest ISP scores.Conclusions:The more slowly whiplash patients expect to recover,or the less sure they are of recovery,the more severe their initial perceptions of injury. | Robert FERRARI Deon LOUW | 2011 | Journal of Zhejiang University-Science B(Biomedicine & Biotechnology)2011,12,8: | 2 |
