| 1 | Multidimensional Projections for Visual Analysis of Social Networks显示文摘Visual analysis of social networks is usually based on graph drawing algorithms and tools.However,social networks are a special kind of graph in the sense that interpretation of displayed relationships is heavily dependent on context.Context,in its turn,is given by attributes associated with graph elements,such as individual nodes,edges,and groups of edges,as well as by the nature of the connections between individuals.In most systems,attributes of individuals and communities are not taken into consideration during graph layout,except to derive weights for force-based placement strategies.This paper proposes a set of novel tools for displaying and exploring social networks based on attribute and connectivity mappings.These properties are employed to layout nodes on the plane via multidimensional projection techniques.For the attribute mapping,we show that node proximity in the layout corresponds to similarity in attribute,leading to easiness in locating similar groups of nodes.The projection based on connectivity yields an initial placement that forgoes force-based or graph analysis algorithm,reaching a meaningful layout in one pass.When a force algorithm is then applied to this initial mapping,the final layout presents better properties than conventional force-based approaches.Numerical evaluations show a number of advantages of pre-mapping points via projections.User evaluation demonstrates that these tools promote ease of manipulation as well as fast identification of concepts and associations which cannot be easily expressed by conventional graph visualization alone.In order to allow better space usage for complex networks,a graph mapping on the surface of a sphere is also implemented. | Rafael Messias Martins Gabriel Faria Andery Henry Heberle Fernando Vieira Paulovich Alneu de Andrade Lopes Helio Pedrini Rosane Minghim | 2012 | Journal of Computer Science & Technology2012,27,4: | 6 |
| 2 | Glutamine and glutamate supplementation raise milk glutamine concentrations in lactating gilts显示文摘Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in milk, and lactation is associated with increased glutamine utilization both for milk synthesis and as a fuel for the enlarged small intestine. A number of recent studies have indicated that lactation is accompanied by a mild catabolic state in which skeletal muscle proteins are degraded to provide amino acids that are used to synthesize additional glutamine. In this study we tested the hypothesis that supplemental L-glutamine or the commercially available glutamine supplement Aminogut (2.5% by weight mixed into daily feed) provided to gilts from 30 days prior to parturition until 21 days post-parturition would prevent a decrease in skeletal muscle glutamine while increasing the glutamine content of the milk. Muscle glutamine content decreased (P < 0.05) in control animals during lactation but this was prevented by supplementation with either L-glutamine or Aminogut. In this study, neither lactation nor supplementation had any effect on plasma glutamine or glutamate content. Free glutamine, and the total glutamine plus glutamate concentrations in milk from the control and the Aminogut group rose (P < 0.05) during the first 7 days of lactation, with milk concentrations in the L-glutamine supplemented group showing a similar trend (P = 0.053). Milk glutamate remained constant between day 7 and 21 of lactation in the control and L-glutamine supplemented groups, but by day 21 of lactation the free glutamine, glutamate, and glutamine plus glutamate concentrations in milk from Aminogut-treated gilts were higher than those of control gilts. Thus dietary glutamine supplementation can alleviate the fall in intramuscular glutamine content during lactation in gilts, and may alleviate some of the catabolic effects of lactation. | 4 | Mathematical modelling for Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis dynamics:A new analysis considering updated parameters and notified human Brazilian data显示文摘Brazil is one of the highest endemic countries for Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis:according to the Brazilian Ministry of Health,the annual number of new human cases and deaths due to this disease has been increasing for the last 20 years.In addition,regarding the Americas,the specific relationship between canine and human for Visceral Leishmaniasis dynamics is still not well understood.In this work we propose a new model for Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis,based on the models previously published by Burattini et al.(1998)and Ribas et al.(2013).Herein,we modeled the disease dynamics using a modified set of differential equations from those two authors,considering the same assumptions(inclusion of human,dog and sandfly populations,all constants over time).From this set of equations we were able to calculate the basic reproduction number R 0 and to analyze the stability and sensitivity of the system to the parameters variability.As main result,when the stability of the system is reached,the normalized reporting human cases rate is estimated in 9.12E-08/day.This estimation is very close to the 2015 report from Araçatuba city,5.69E-08/day.We also observed from stability and sensitivity analysis that the activity of sandfly population is critical to introduction and maintenance of Zoonotic Visceral Leishmaniasis in the population.In addition,the importance of dog as source of infection concentrates on latent dog,since it does not show clinical symptoms and signs and,therefore,has a great contribution to disease dissemination.As conclusion,considering the presently ethical issues regarding to elimination of positive dog in Brazil and the highly sensitivity of disease dynamics on sandfly population,we recommend that the sandfly population control should be prioritized. | Helio Junji Shimozako Jianhong Wu Eduardo Massad | 2017 | Infectious Disease Modelling2017,2,2: | 2 |
| 5 | Optimizing Nitrogen Use Efficiency for No-Till Corn Production by Improving Root Growth and Capturing NO_(3)-N in Subsoil显示文摘Subsoil acidity restricts root growth and reduces crop yields in many parts of the world. More than half of the fertilizer nitrogen(N) applied in crop production is currently lost to the environment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of gypsum application on the efficiency of N fertilizer in no-till corn(Zea mays L.) production in southern Brazil. A field experiment examined the effects of surface-applied gypsum(0, 5, 10, and 15 Mg ha^(-1)) and top-dressed ammonium nitrate(NH_4NO_3)(60, 120, and 180 kg N ha^(-1)) on corn root length, N uptake, and grain yield. A greenhouse experiment was conducted using undisturbed soil columns collected from the field experiment site to evaluate NO_3-N leaching, N uptake, and root length with surface-applied gypsum(0 and 10 Mg ha^(-1)) and top-dressed NH_4NO_3(0 and 180 kg N ha^(-1)). Amelioration of subsoil acidity due to gypsum application increased corn root growth,N uptake, grain yield, and N use efficiency. Applying gypsum to the soil surface increased corn grain yield by 19%–38% and partial factor productivity of N(PFPN) by 27%–38%, depending on the N application rate. Results of the undisturbed soil column greenhouse experiment showed that improvement of N use efficiency by gypsum application was due to the higher N uptake from NO_3-N in the subsoil as a result of increased corn root length. Our results suggest that ameliorating subsoil acidity with gypsum in a no-till corn system could increase N use efficiency, improve grain yield, and reduce environmental risks due to NO_3-N leaching. | Eduardo F. | 13 | Development of an ADC radiation tolerance characterization system for the upgrade of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter显示文摘ATLAS LAr calorimeter will undergo its Phase-I upgrade during the long shutdown(LS2) in 2018, and a new LAr Trigger Digitizer Board(LTDB) will be designed and installed. Several commercial-off-the-shelf(COTS)multi-channel high-speed ADCs have been selected as possible backups of the radiation tolerant ADC ASICs for the LTDB. To evaluate the radiation tolerance of these backup commercial ADCs, we developed an ADC radiation tolerance characterization system, which includes the ADC boards, data acquisition(DAQ) board, signal generator,external power supplies and a host computer. The ADC board is custom designed for different ADCs, with ADC drivers and clock distribution circuits integrated on board. The Xilinx ZC706 FPGA development board is used as a DAQ board. The data from the ADC are routed to the FPGA through the FMC(FPGA Mezzanine Card)connector, de-serialized and monitored by the FPGA, and then transmitted to the host computer through the Gigabit Ethernet. A software program has been developed with Python, and all the commands are sent to the DAQ board through Gigabit Ethernet by this program. Two ADC boards have been designed for the ADC, ADS52J90 from Texas Instruments and AD9249 from Analog Devices respectively. TID tests for both ADCs have been performed at BNL, and an SEE test for the ADS52J90 has been performed at Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH). Test results have been analyzed and presented. The test results demonstrate that this test system is very versatile, and works well for the radiation tolerance characterization of commercial multi-channel high-speed ADCs for the upgrade of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter.
