| 1 | Analysis of sea surface temperature fronts in the Taiwan Strait and its adjacent area using an advanced edge detection method显示文摘A morphology-based edge detection method has been used to study sea surface temperature (SST) fronts in the Taiwan Strait and its adjacent area. The method is based on mathematical morphology with multi-dimensional and multi-structural elements. Using six years’ SST data from September 2002 to August 2008, we distinguished the large SST front like Kuroshio Front as well as the smaller ones: namely Taiwan Bank Front, Zhe-Min Coastal Front and Zhang-Yun Ridge Front. The seasonal and monthly variations of these fronts were also studied. Generally, the SST fronts are stronger in winter but weaker in summer. | 2 | 喜马拉雅山佩枯岗日冰川地貌的年代学、平衡线高度和气候研究显示文摘喜马拉雅山珠穆朗玛峰-希夏邦马峰地区是青藏高原南部现代冰川集中发育区之一,古冰川遗迹亦十分丰富,是研究第四纪青藏高原冰川形成和演化的关键区,一直备受地貌和第四纪环境研究者的关注.应用原地宇宙核素10Be暴露年龄测试技术,对采自希夏邦马峰西北佩枯岗日拉曲谷地冰碛垄上的冰川漂砾进行年代学研究;结合冰川地貌分析方法,对古冰川平衡线高度(ELA)和气候特征进行探讨.结果表明:末次冰期时,拉曲谷地冰川扩张,发育了山麓冰川,拉曲Ⅰ冰川面积99.9 km2,平衡线海拔5 620 m;拉曲Ⅱ冰川面积97.6 km2,平衡线海拔5 600 m;与现代平衡线高度相比,拉曲Ⅰ和拉曲Ⅱ的平衡线分别下降380 m、400 m.拉曲在末次冰期存在多次冰进,拉曲Ⅰ的10Be暴露年龄在42.1~22.3 ka;拉曲Ⅱ的10Be暴露年龄在18.6~14.8 ka.根据地貌法恢复末次冰期拉曲Ⅰ平衡线高度的温度为-10.7℃,拉曲Ⅱ为-10.6℃,降水量分别为251~461 mm和261~480 mm,显示出当时雪线高度的温度状况和现代冰川雪线高度的温度状况接近,但是降水比现在少得多,冰川气候类型为亚大陆型,印度季风减弱带来的水气变少. | 刘耕年 Li Yingkui 陈艺鑫 张梅 李川川 孔屏 Harbor J. | 3 | A NON-UNIFORM SEDIMENT TRANSPORT MODEL WITH THE BOUNDARY-FITTING ORTHOGONAL COORDINATE SYSTEM显示文摘A 2-D non-uniform sediment mat hmatical model in the boundary-fitting orthogonal coordinate system was develop ed in this paper. The governing equations, the numerical scheme, the boundary con ditions, the movable boundary technique and the numerical solutions were present ed. The model was verified by the data of the reach 25km upstream the Jialingjia ng estuary and the 44km long main stream of the Chongqing reach of the Yangtze r iver. | 4 | Generation and Deformation of Solitary Waves显示文摘Base on the Lagrangian description and finite differencing of the time step, the generation, propagation and deformation of solitary waves are simulated numerically by means of boundary element method. An algorithm to generate waves with any prescribed form is also implanted in the scheme, but in this research, solitary waves are studied. The numerical model is first verified by studying the case of a solitary wave impinging against a vertical wall. Time histories of evolution of a soliton running up on a sloping beach, as well as over a submerged obstacle are then presented. | 6 | Nitrite-derived nitric oxide by xanthine oxidoreductase protects the liver against ischemia- reperfusion injury显示文摘It was demonstrated that xanthine oxidoreductase (XOR), during ischemia, catalyzes the formation of nitric oxide (NO) from nitrite (NO2-) and this NO2--derived NO protects the isolated perfused rat heart against the damaging effects of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) when conventional nitric oxide synthase (NOS) -dependent NO production is impaired. Liver is one of the organs with the highest XOR concentration. This study was designed to determine whether NO2--derived NO by XOR protects liver against I/R injury in vivo. For its minute amounts and active reactivity, NO can not be detected directly in real time in vivo by this time. We have to prove the above hypothesis indirectly. METHODS:Wistar rats were pretreated with saline, NOS inhibitor L-NAME (10 mg/kg intravenously), XOR inhibitor allopurinol (1.5 mg/kg orally), L-NAME +allopurinol and NO scavenger carboxy-PTIO (0.6 mg/kg intravenously) respectively (12 animals per group). And then, they were subjected to total liver ischemia for 40 minutes followed by reperfusion. Blood samples and liver tissues were obtained for analysis after 3 hours of reperfusion. Survival was also investigated. RESULTS:Allopurinol-treated animals exhibited further increased serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels and liver myeloperoxidase (MPO) activities, but further decreased liver adenosine triphosphate (ATP) stores after I/R compared to saline-treated counterparts (830.5±108.3 U/L, 56.5±11.0 U/mg protein and 1.93±0.47 μmol/g vs. 505.8± 184.2 U/L, 41.5±10.2 U/mg protein and 3.05±0.55 μmol/g respectively, P<0.01, P<0.05 and P<0.01 respectively). The hepatocyte injury was further exacerbated and the overall survival rate was significantly decreased after I/R in animals given by allopurinol compared to those pretreated by saline (P<0.05). L-NAME and allopurinol co-treated animals exhibited more severe liver injury (P<0.05 and P<0.01) and a further decreased overall survival rate (P<0.05) compared to L-NAME or allopurinol alone-treated counterparts, but they were not different from carboxy-PTIO treated animals (P>0.05). | 7 | PREDICTING THE DEPTH OF EROSION IN RESERVOIRS FOLLOWING DAM REMOVAL USING BANK STABILITY ANALYSIS显示文摘Dam removal has emerged in the U.S. as a critical concern for river management. Of particular interest is predicting the quantity of sediment that will be eroded from a reservoir following dam removal, which necessitates predicting the geometry a channel will approach as it forms in the reservoir. The geometry and sediment characteristics of the Koshkonong River were measured as it adjusted to the removal of the Rockdale Dam. Bank stability modeling was used as a tool for predicting the maximum depth of the evolving channel and general agreement was found between depths predicted with the model and those observed up to one year following dam removal. Model sensitivity analysis showed strong control of bank heights by groundwater levels in the reservoir sediment, as well as some control by vegetation established on the sediment surface. Long-term monitoring is needed to assess the accuracy of the model, but preliminary agreement is encouraging for applying this model and similar models to future dam removals. | Martin W.
