1Handgrip strength and health outcomes: Umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies显示文摘Purpose:The aim of the present study was to assess both the credibility and strength of evidence arising from systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies on handgrip strength and health outcomes. Methods:An umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies was conducted. We assessed meta-analyses of observational studies based on random-effect summary effect sizes and their p values,95%prediction intervals,heterogeneity,small-study effects, and excess significance. We graded the evidence from convincing(Class I)to weak(Class IV).Results:From 504 articles returned in a search of the literature,8 systematic reviews were included in our review, with a total of 11 outcomes.Overall, nine of the 11 of the outcomes reported nominally significant summary results(p<0.05),with 4 associations surviving the application of the more stringent p value(p<106).No outcome presented convincing evidence.Three associations showed Class II evidence(i.e.,highly suggestive):(1)higher handgrip values at baseline were associated with a minor reduction in mortality risk in the general population(n=34 studies;sample size=1,855,817;relative risk=0.72,95%confidence interval(95%CI):0.670.78),(2)cardiovascular death risk in mixed populations(n=15 studies;relative risk=0.84,95%CI:0.780.91),and(3)incidence of disability(n=7 studies;relative risk=0.76,95%CI:0.660.87).Conclusion:The present results show that handgrip strength is a useful indicator for general health status and specifically for early all-cause and cardiovascular mortality,as well as disability. To further inform intervention strategies, future research is now required to fully understand mechanisms linking handgrip strength scores to these health outcomes.Pinar Soysal Christopher Hurst Jacopo Demurtas Joseph Firth Reuben Howden Lin Yang Mark A.Tully Ai Koyanagi Petre Cristian Ilie Guillermo F.Lopez-Sanchez Lukas Schwingshackl Nicola Veronese Lee Smith 2021Journal of Sport and Health Science2021,10,3:5
2Is There a Metabolic Requirement for Photorespiratory Enzyme Activities in Heterotrophic Tissues?显示文摘Dear Editor, Photorespiration is an essential metabolic process in leaves that facilitates recovery of carbon lost by the oxygenase reaction of Rubisco and avoids the accumulation of the toxic product,2-phosphoglycolate (2PG) of this reaction (Bauwe et al.,2012).However,there is also evidence to suggest that photorespiration has a more complex role during normal growth than the mere detoxification of 2PG and the recovery of 3-phosphoglycerate (3PGA) (Bauwe et al.,2012).The current view is that photorespiration is an essential mechanism to maintain optimal photosynthesis, normal growth, and development of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms in an oxygen-containing environment (Bauwe et al.,2012).Adriano Nunes-Nesi Alexandra Florian Andrew Howden Kathrin Jahnke Stefan Timm Hermann Bauwe Lee Sweetlove Alisdair R. 3Effect and feasibility of wearable physical activity trackers and pedometers for increasing physical activity and improving health outcomes in cancer survivors:A systematic review and meta-analysis显示文摘Purpose:This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effect of wearable devices for improving physical activity and healthrelated outcomes in cancer survivors. Methods:CINAHL,Cochrane,Ebscohost,MEDLINE,Pubmed,ProQuest Health and Medical Complete,ProQuest Nursing and Allied Health Source,ScienceDirect, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched for randomized controlled trials published before September 1,2020,that evaluated interventions involving wearable devices in cancer survivors.Standardized mean differences(SMDs)were calculated to assess effects on physical activity and health-related outcomes.Subgroup analyses were conducted to assess whether the effects differed by interventions and cancer characteristics.Risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool.Results:Thirty-five trials were included(breast cancer,n=15,43%).Intervention durations ranged between 4 weeks and 1 year. Most trials(n=25,71%)involved pedometer-based physical activity interventions.Seven(20%)involved Fitbit-based interventions, and 3(9%)involved other wearable physical activity trackers(e.g.,Polar,Garmin).Compared to usual care, wearable devices had moderate-to-large effects(SMD range 0.54-0.87,p<0.001)on moderate-intensity physical activity,moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity, total physical activity, and daily steps.Compared to usual care, those in the intervention had higher quality of life, aerobic fitness, physical function, and reduced fatigue(SMD range=0.18-0.66,all p<0.05).Conclusion:Wearable physical activity trackers and pedometers are effective tools that increase physical activity and improve health-related outcomes in individuals with cancer.Identifying how these devices can be implemented for longer-term use with other intervention components remains an area for future research.Benjamin Singh Eva M.Zopf Erin J Howden 2022Journal of Sport and Health Science2022,11,2:2
