1Controllable macrocyclic supramolecular assemblies in aqueous solution显示文摘A series of macrocycles, including crown ethers, cyclodextrins, calixarenes, pillararenes and cucurbiturils, are well known to be able to associate various organic/inorganic/biological guest molecules and ions in their well-defined cyclic cavities to form stable host-guest complexes and supramolecular systems through the cooperative contributions of various non-covalent interactions.When one or more functional groups are attached to the cavity of macrocycles or guest molecules, enhanced and/or controlled host-guest associations may take place, leading to not only improved host-guest binding abilities but also fascinating properties.In this review, some representative contributions in the construction of controllable macrocyclic supramolecular assemblies in aqueous solution are presented with an emphasis on the stimuli-responsive control manner and wide applications of this property.Yong Chen Feihe Huang Zhan-Ting Li Yu Liu 2018Science China Chemistry2018,61,8:8
2Pillararene-based supramolecular systems for theranostics and bioapplications显示文摘As an emerging type of important macrocycles for supramolecular chemistry,pillararenes and their derivatives have been widely studied and applied in numerous fields,which intensively promotes the development of chemistry,materials science and biology.Pillararene-based theranostic systems are of special interest in the biological and medical areas as they have shown very promising results.Owing to easy preparation,reliable guest affinity,good biocompatibility and stability,pillararenes are frequently used to construct functional biomaterials.On one hand,pillararenes can either be used individually or form diversiform self-assemblies such as micelles,nanoparticles and vesicles to increase water solubility and biocompatibility of drugs.On the other hand,it is promising to modify solid materials like framework materials,silica nanoparticles and graphene oxides with pillararene derivatives to enhance their functions and controllability.In this review,we summarize recent endeavors of pillararene-based supramolecular systems with theranostics and other biological applications comprising drug delivery/chemotherapy,photodynamic/photothermal therapy,antimicrobials,bioimaging,etc.By introducing several typical examples,the design principles,preparation strategies,identifications and bio-applications of these pillararene-based supramolecular systems are described.Future challenges and directions of this field are also outlined.Huangtianzhi Zhu Qi Li Laila E.Khalil-Cruz Niveen M.Khashab Guocan Yu Feihe Huang 2021Science China Chemistry2021,64,5:4

5Cyclic Ether Contaminant Removal from Water Using Nonporous Adaptive Pillararene Crystals via Host-Guest Complexation at the Solid-Solution Interface显示文摘Te removal of soluble cyclic ether contaminants,such as dioxane and THF,produced in industrial chemical processes from water is of great importance for environmental protection and human health.Here we report that nonporous adaptive crystals of perethylated pillar[5]arene(EtP5)and pillar[6]arene(EtP6)work as adsorbents for cyclic ether contaminant removal via hostguest complexation at the solid-solution interface.Nonporous EtP6 crystals have the ability to adsorb dioxane from water with the formation of 1:2 host-guest complex crystals,while EtP5 crystals cannot.However,both guest-free EtP5 and EtP6 crystals remove THF from water with EtP5 having a better capacity.Tis is because EtP5 forms a 1:2 host-guest complex with THF via host-guest complexation at the solid-solution interface while EtP6 forms a 1:1 host-guest complex with THF.EtP6 also shows the ability to selectively remove dioxane from water even in the presence of THF.Moreover,the reversible transitions between nonporous guestfree EtP5 and EtP6 structures and guest-loaded structures make them highly recyclable.Yujuan Zhou Kecheng Jie Run Zhao Errui Li Feihe Huang 2019Research2019,,1:2

14Pillararenes as Versatile Building Blocks for Fluorescent Materials显示文摘Fluorescent materials have received more and more attention in the past few decades because of their great potentials in the fields of luminescent devices,sensing,data storage,bioimaging,and other optical applications.Fluorescent materials comprising organic molecules are of broad interest owing to their highly tunable emission.Initial studies on organic fluorescent materials were mainly focused on the design and covalent modification of fluorophores in order to improve their photophysical properties at the molecular level,whereas in recent decades,many studies have revealed that the intermolecular or intramolecular noncovalent interactions also play a crucial role in luminescence.For example,the modulation of noncovalent interactions in aggregates and selfassemblies was proven to be capable of adjusting aggregation-induced emission(AIE)-active fluorophores by the restriction of intramolecular motions(RIM).In addition,in the crystalline state,intermolecular noncovalent interactions are able to promote phosphorescence by decreasing nonradiative decays.Introducing supramolecular macrocycles into organic fluorescent materials is an intriguing prospect because multiple noncovalent interactions are incorporated.On one hand,the photophysical properties of fluorophores can be changed upon inclusion within the macrocycles,providing unforeseen luminescence.On the other hand,the dynamic and reversible features of host−guest recognition endow the materials with controllability and stimuli-responsiveness,which is beneficial to the fabrication of smart materials.Among numerous supramolecular macrocycles,pillararenes are promising candidates that can be included in fluorescent materials.The advantages of pillararenes are their easy functionalization and planar chirality.After modification with proper substituents,pillararene derivatives possess high solubility and stability in both organic and aqueous media,and reversible guest binding remains.Such features make pillararenes versatile hosts in different environments.Additionally,pillararenes are planar chiral,and the interconversion between enantiomers can be adjusted with different-sized substituents and external stimuli,which are favorable to the construction of chiroptical materials.In this Account,we summarize research progress in the field of pillararene-based luminescent materials,which mainly includes the contributions made by our group.Using pillararenes as building blocks can facilitate the fabrication of high-performance fluorescent materials,in solution or the solid state,with different functions and mechanisms.Therefore,we categorize pillararene-based luminescent materials as those in solution or in the solid state.The applications and the advantages of pillararenes are discussed in detail.For example,in the solid state,pillararene-based host−guest complexation is capable of minimizing the aggregation-caused quenching(ACQ)of fluorophores.This broadens the application of fluorophores in crystalline materials.In solution,the host−guest complexes of pillararenes and fluorophores can self-assemble into well-defined nanostructures,which not only adjust the photophysical properties but also enable functions such as bioimaging.The remaining challenges and future perspectives are outlined at the end.It is expected that this Account will inspire new researchers in different fields and offer new opportunities for the construction of novel luminescent materials with pillararenes and other macrocycles.Huangtianzhi Zhu Qi Li Weijie Zhu Feihe Huang 2022Accounts of Materials Research2022,3,6:1

17Negatively charged crown ethers for binding paraquat in water显示文摘A water soluble negatively charged fluorescent 1,4-benzo-1,5-naphtho-36-crown-10-based host has been devised and synthesized.As shown by proton NMR,ESI mass spectrometry and UV-vis spectroscopy,it binds paraquat with a 1:1 stoichiometry and an association constant of 4.50(±0.02) ×103 M-1 in water.Its complexation with paraquat in water was further investigated by fluorescence emission spectroscopy.The results revealed that when paraquat was added to the water solution of the host,the fluorescence emission of the host was quenched by the charge transfer between the crown ether host and paraquat guest.A similar bis-p-phenylene-34-crown-10-based host was synthesized as a contrasting host.Lacking the naphthalene unit,the second host binds paraquat with a 1:1 stoichiometry and a lower association constant,1.04(±0.04) ×103 M-1,in water.This demonstrated that the naphthalene unit could not only act as a strong fluorescence group but also improve the π-πstacking interactions between the host and guest.Wu, Ling Liu, Ming Chen, XiaoPeng Li, ShiJun Huang, FeiHe 2010Science China Chemistry2010,53,5:1
