Some open problems in granular matter mechanics显示文摘Granular matter is a large assemblage of solid particles, which is fundamentally different from any other type of matters, such as solid and liquid. Most models presented for granular matter are phenomenological and are only suitable for solving engineering problems. Many fundamental mechanical problems remain open. By analyzing characteristics of internal state structure, we propose that granular matter is intrinsically multiscale, i.e. microscale of particle size, mesoscale of force chain, and macroscale of the bulk of granular matter. The correlations among difference scales would be crucial. The mesoscale force chain network is determined by both particle properties and macroscopic boundary conditions. The evolution of the force the chain network contributes to macroscopic mechanical properties of granular matter. In addition, we discuss the drawbacks in simplifying contact forces in the current models, and the difficulties in analyzing the interaction of interstitial fluid in wet granular matter. As an appropriate application of granular matter, debris flow can be studied with granular matter mechanics; meanwhile, debris flow brings more challenges which certainly motivate future studies on granular matter. | Qicheng Sun a, Guangqian Wanga, Kaiheng Hub a Department of Hydraulic Engineering, State Key Laboratory for Hydroscience and Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China b Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chengdu 610041, China | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 25

Motion behavior of particles in air-solid magnetically stabilized fluidized beds for separation显示文摘In order to study the settling mechanism of particles in an air-solid magnetically stabilized fluidized bed(MSFB) for separation,we carried out free settling and quasi-zero settling tests on the tracing particles. The results show that the main resistance forces as the tracing particles settled in an air-solid MSFB were motion resistance force and yield force. The motion resistance and yield forces greatly hindered the free settling of the particles by greatly decreasing the acceleration for settling process of the particles. The acceleration decreased from 3022.62 cm/s 2 to zero in 0.1 s,and in the end,the particles stopped in the air-solid MSFB.The yield force on particles increased with increasing the magnetic field intensity, resulting in decrease of the quasi-zero settling displacement. However, the yield force on particles decreased with increasing the fluidized air velocity, leading to increase of the quasi-zero settling displacement. When the structure and operating parameters of the air-solid MSFB were set up,the yield stress on particles stopped in an air-solid MSFB was a function of diameter and density of particles. The settling displacements of equal diameter particles increased with increasing their densities, and the settling displacements of equal density particles increased with increasing their diameters. | Song Shulei a,,Zhao Yuemin a,Luo Zhenfu a,Tang Ligang b a School of Chemical Engineering and Technology,China University of Mining & Technology,Xuzhou 221116,China b Coal Mining and Designing Department,Tiandi Science & Technology Company Co.Ltd.,Beijing 100013,China | 2012 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2012,22,5: | 13
Research progress on electrical signals in higher plants显示文摘This review introduces the characteristics of electrical signals in higher plants and their corresponding physiological significance, and describes in detail the impact of environmental factors (e.g. light and temperature) on the electrical potential of the plants. Also, we evaluate the measurement techniques used for electrical signals in plants, including intracellular measurement, extracellular measurement, measurement of the ion channel based on the patch-clamp technique and on the non-invasive microelectrode vibrating probe technique. We also give a brief review of the applications of these methods for investigating electrical signals in plants. The ionic mechanism of electrical activity in plants is then discussed in terms of environmental response in higher plants, and this is used to provide a theoretical basis for quantitative description of the electrical signals in plants. A model for interpretation of the electrical signal mechanisms in higher plants is discussed, but further experiments are required for the verification of this model. | Xiaofei Yana, Zhongyi Wang a, Lan Huang a, Cheng Wang b, Ruifeng Hou b, Zhilong Xu b, Xiaojun Qiao b a College of Information and Electrical Engineering, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100083, China b National Engineering Research Center for Information Technology in Agriculture, Beijing 100097, China | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 13
Coupled modeling of tumour angiogenesis, tumour growth, and blood perfusion显示文摘This paper proposes a more realistic mathematical simulation method to investigate the dynamic process of tumour angio-genesis by fully coupling the vessel growth, tumour growth and associated blood perfusion. The tumour growth and angiogenesis are coupled by the chemical microenvironment and the cell-matrix interaction. The haemodynamic calculation is carried out on the new vasculature, and an estimation of vessel collapse is made according to the wall shear stress criterion. The results are consistent with physiological observations, and further confirm the application of the coupled model feedback mechanism. The model is available to examine the interactions between angiogenesis and tumour growth,to study the change in the dynamic process of chemical environment and the vessel remodeling. | Y.Cai,1,2 S.X.Xu,1,a) J.Wu,3 and Q.Long 2,b) 1) Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science,Fudan University,Shanghai 200433,China 2) Brunel Institute for Bioengineering,School of Engineering and Design,Brunel University,Uxbridge,Middlesex,UK 3) School of Naval Architecture,Ocean and Civil Engineering,Shanghai Jiaotong University,Shanghai 200240,China | 2011 | Theoretical & Applied Mechanics Letters2011,1,4: | 8
Engineering of drug nanoparticles by HGCP for pharmaceutical applications显示文摘This paper reviews our work on the fundamental principles of high gravity controlled precipitation (HGCP) technology, and its applications in the production of drug nanoparticles, which was carried out in a rotating packed bed (RPB). Several kinds of drug nanoparticles with narrow particle size distributions (PSDs) were successfully prepared via HGCP, including the 300-nm Cefuroxime Axetil (CFA) particles, 200–400-nm cephradine particles, 500-nm salbutamol sulfate (SS) particles (100 nm in width), and 850-nm beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) particles, etc. Compared to drugs available in the current market, all the drug nanoparticles produced by HGCP exhibited advantages in both formulation and drug delivery, thus improving the bioavailability of drugs. HGCP is essentially a platform technology for the preparation of poorly water-soluble drug nanoparticles for oral and injection delivery, and of inhalable drugs for pulmonary delivery. Consequently, HGCP offers potential applications in the pharmaceutical industry due to its cost-effectiveness, efficient processing and the ease of scaling-up. | Ting-Ting Hua, Jie-Xin Wanga, Zhi-Gang Shena, Jian-Feng Chena,b, a Key Lab for Nanomaterials, Ministry of Education, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, China b Research Center of Ministry of Education for High Gravity Engineering and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, China | 2008 | Particuology2008,6,4: | 7

Effects of disinhibition on spatiotemporal pattern of neuronal first recruitment in neuronal networks显示文摘The propagation of neuronal activities is a key feature to understanding information processing in networks. The analysis based on first-spikes of bursts in turn plays an important role in the research of neuronal activity propagation. Our focus here is to investigate how spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal first-spikes are affected by disinhibition. Multi-electrode arrays were used to record stimulation-evoked bursts of multiple neurons in randomly cultured neuronal networks. Both the precise timing of and the rank relationships between first-spikes were analyzed. Compared with evoked bursts in the network's native state, the precise first-spike latencies in its dis-inhibited state are more consistent and the propagation of its bursting activities is much faster. Additional points of interest are that disinhibited neuronal networks can be evoked to generate stable and distinguishable neuronal first recruitment spatiotemporal patterns specific to the stimulation site, and that the disinhibition may cause the original spatiotemporal patterns to change in a heterogeneous manner with regards to different propagation pathways. | Liangbin Pana,b,c,1, Xindong Songa,b,c,1, Guangxin Xiang a,b,c, Jing Zhua,b,c, Jing Cheng a,b,c,d,a Medical Systems Biology Research Center, Tsinghua University School of Medicine, Beijing 100084, China b Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China c National Engineering Research Center for Beijing Biochip Technology, 18 Life Science Parkway, Beijing 102206, China d State Key Laboratory of Biomembrane and Membrane Biotechnology, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 6

Internet-based collaborative pseudo-dynamic testing of multi-span bridge structure显示文摘In this paper, the first Internet-based collaborative pseudo-dynamic testing of a multi-span bridge system in China's Mainland is presented in detail, which has been carried out by the collaboration of Hunan University (HNU), Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and Tsinghua University (TU) in China's Mainland, and the University of Southern California (USC) in the USA. The prototype system of Russion River Bridge at Southern California in America is illustrated. Different testing specimens, testing equipments and substructure boundary conditions at HNU and HIT laboratories are described. A network protocol platform for collaborative pseudo-dynamic testing, called NetSLab, and some function modules developed on the use of its standardized interface are introduced. Aiming at the MTS system widely used in structural testing, two approaches are presented to implement the communication interface between NetSLab and testing equipment, respectively, studied by HNU and HIT. The integrated networked testing system and collaborative testing procedures are presented. The testing results manifest that the networked collaborative testing system with powerful capability provides a testing platform with good coordination for complex models or actual structures, and achieves remote sharing of testing equipments. | Dapeng Wang a, Shizhu Tiana, Xinjiang Caia, Yunlei Fan b, Yan Xiaob,c a School of Civil Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150090, China b School of Civil Engineering, Hunan University, Changsha 410082, China c Department of Civil Engineering, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089, USA | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 4
Epstein-Barr virus-encoded latent membrane protein 1 modulates cyclin D1 by c-Jun/Jun B heterodimers显示文摘In our recent studies, we found that LMP1 encoded by Epstein-Barr virus could accelerate the formation of active c-Jun/Jun B heterodimer. We studied the regulation of cyclinD1 by c-Jun/Jun B heterodimers by laser scanning confocal influorescence microscopy, Western blot, luciferase activity assay, super-EMSA and flow cytometry in the Tet-on-LMP1 HNE2 cell line, in which LMP1 expression was regulated by Tet-on system. c-Jun/Jun B heterodimers induced by LMP1 could up regulate cyclin D1 promoter activity and expression. Overexpression of cy-clinD1 accelerated the progression of cell cycle. | SONG Xin1, TAO Yongguang1, ZENG Liang1, YANG Jing1, TANG Faqing1, Leo M. Lee2, GONG Jianping3, WU Qiao4 & CAO Ya1 1. | 18 | A novel method for Co(Ⅱ) and Cu(Ⅱ) analysis by capillary electrophoresis with chemiluminescence detection显示文摘Based on the fact that some metal ions can catalyze the chemiluminescence(CL)reaction of luminol with K3Fe(CN)6,a novel capillary electrophoresis CL method was developed for the determination of Co(Ⅱ)and Cu(Ⅱ).The separation was carried out with a 10 mmol/L sodium acetate solution containing 0.8 mmol/L luminol and 2.0 mmol/Lα-HIBA(adjusted to pH 4.8 by HAc solution). The post-capillary reagent was 2.0 mmol/L K3Fe(CN)6 which was adjusted to pH 13.0 by NaOH solution.Under the optimum conditions, the detection limits(S/N=3)for Co(Ⅱ)and Cu(Ⅱ)were 7.5×10-11mol/L and 7.5×10-9mol/L,with the linear range of 7.5×10-9mol/L to 1.0×10-6mol/L and 7.5×10-8mol/L to 5.0×10-5mol/L, respectively. | Xiao Ming Guo~a Xiang Dong Xu~(a,b) Hui Jing Zhang~a Yong Gang Hu~(a,*) Jie Zhang~a a Institute of Environmental Science & Engineering,Huazhong University of Science and Technology,Wuhan 430074,China b Department of Chemistry,Huazhong University of Science and Technology,Wuhan 430074,China | 2007 | Chinese Chemical Letters2007,18,9: | 3
Removal of Nitrogen Oxides in Diesel Engine Exhaust by Plasma Assisted Molecular Sieves显示文摘This paper reports the studies conducted on removal of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from diesel engine exhaust using electrical discharge plasma combined with adsorbing materials such as molecular sieves. This study is being reported for the first time. The exhaust is taken from a diesel engine of 6 kW under no load conditions. The characteristic behavior of a pulse energized dielectric barrier discharge reactor in the diesel exhaust treatment is reported. The NOx removal was not significant (36%) when the reactor without any packing was used. However, when the reactor was packed with molecular sieves (MS -3A, -4A & -13X), the NOx removal efficiency was increased to 78% particularly at a temperature of 200 o C. The studies were conducted at different temperatures and the results were discussed. | B S Rajanikanth, V RaviDept. of High Voltage Engineering, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore 560012,INDIA | 2002 | Plasma Science and Technology2002,4,4: | 3
