| 3 | Mineralogical and sink-float studies of Jajarm low-grade bauxite显示文摘Jajarm's bauxite deposits are mainly diasporic,and they have a low mass ratio of Al2O3/SiO2. It is necessary to increase the run-of-mine mass ratio before feeding the material to the Bayer process. Chemical analysis indicated that the low-grade bauxite sample from Jajarm contained 43.9wt% Al2O3 and 13.35wt% SiO2, resulting in a mass ratio of 3.29. According to mineralogical studies, the presence of aluminosilicate minerals such as kaolinite, illite, and quartz was the main reason for the decrease of the mass ratio. Microscopic observations revealed that, with the size reduction from -1000+710 to -38 μm, the liberation degree of diaspore increased from 10% to 60%, and that of aluminosilicates increased from 20% to 85%. Heavy liquids with the densities of 2.8, 3.0, 3.2, and 3.4 g/cm3 were used to evaluate the heavy media separation in three sizes, i.e., -3350+710, -710+212, and -212+125 μm. | 4 | Efficacy and safety of Amla(Phyllanthus emblica L.) in non-erosive reflux disease:a double-blind,randomized,placebo-controlled clinical trial显示文摘Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) is one of the most common gastrointestinal complaints. GERD, caused by the reflux of stomach contents into the esophagus, leads to troublesome symptoms such as heartburn and regurgitation. It is classified into two types: erosive esophagitis,characterized by visible esophageal mucosa erosion in endoscopy, and non-erosive reflux disease(NERD). GERD is a chronic and recurrent disease that impairs the quality of life and imposes socioeconomic and therapeutic burdens to both patients and society.Objective: Due to the failure of the conventional treatments for GERD and to the traditional use of Amla(Phyllanthus emblica L.), in addition to beneficial effects shown in recent studies, we evaluated the safety and efficacy of Amla tablet for improvement of symptoms of patients with NERD.Design, setting, participants and interventions: We designed a double-arm, randomized, double-blind,placebo-controlled clinical trial. Sixty-eight patients who had classic symptoms of GERD(heartburn,regurgitation and epigastralgia) for at least three months before the start of the trial were randomized in two parallel groups. Patients in the Amla group received two 500 mg Amla tablets twice a day, after meals,for 4 weeks. In the control group, patients received placebo tablets similar to the Amla prescription.Main outcome measures: The patients were visited at baseline, and at the end of the 2 nd and 4 th weeks of intervention; their symptoms were measured on a frequency and severity scale for the symptoms of NERD,according to the quality of life in reflux-associated disease questionnaire.Results: Frequencies of heartburn and regurgitation in both groups of the study were significantly reduced after intervention(P < 0.001). | 6 | Antibacterial activity of eight Iranian plant extracts against methicillin and cefixime restistant Staphylococcous aureus strains显示文摘Objective:To assess the antibacterial activity of eight Iranian plant extracts against Staphylococcus aureus(S.aureus) strains which were isolated from infected patients.Methods: The studied strains were isolated from urine,stool,blood and wound of infected patients and identified by biochemical tests.In further,the antibacterial activity of 8 ethanolic local plant extracts including Querqus brantii(Q.brantii),Ziziphus spina-christi(Z.spina-christi),Peganum harmala(P.harmala),Oliveira decumbens(O.decumbens),Galium tricornutum(G.tricornutum), Vitex pseudo negundo(Vi.pseudo negundo),Salvia officinalis(S.officinalis),Vaccaria pyramidata (V.pyramidata) were then evaluated using agar disc diffusion method.Results:A total of 9 isolates were isolated and identified as S.aureus.Antibacterial profile of the strains showed that the strains were resistant to methicillin and cefixime.The highest antibacterial activity against the studied strains were belong to Q.brantii,P.harmala,Z.spina-christi and O.decumbens vent extracts with 11-40 mm,15-28 mm,8-26 mm and 10-20 mm of diameters,respectively. Intermediate antibacterial activity was exhibited by G.tricornutum and Vi.pseudo negundo against some of the studied strains with 7-20 mm and 7-13 mm of diameters,respectively. | 8 | In vitro assay for the anti-brucella activity of medicinal plants against tetracycline-resistant Brucella melitensis显示文摘Brucellosis, a zoonosis caused by four species of brucella, has a high morbidity. Brucella melitensis is the main causative agent of brucellosis in both human and small ruminants. As an alternative to conventional antibiotics, medicinal plants are valuable resources for new agents against antibiotic-resistant strains. The aim of this study was to investigate the usage of native plants for brucellosis treatment. For this purpose, the anti-brucella activities of ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Salvia sclarea, Oliveria decumbens, Ferulago angulata, Vitex pseudo-negundo, Teucrium polium, Plantago ovata, Cordia myxa, and Crocus sativus were assessed. The activity against a resistant Br. melitensis strain was determined by disc diffusion method at various concentrations from 50-400 mg/ml. Antibiotic discs were also used as a control. Among the evaluated herbs, six plant (Salvia sclarea, Oliveria decumbens, Ferulago angulata, Vitex pseudo-negundo, Teucrium polium, and Crocus sativus) showed anti-brucella activity. Oliveria de- cumbens was chosen as the most effective plant for further studies. A tested isolate exhibited resistance to tetracycline, nafcillin, oxacillin, methicillin, and colistin. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) values for Oliveria decumbens against resistant Br. melitensis were the same (5 mg/ml), and for gentamicin they were both 2 mg/ml. Time-kill kinetics for a methanolic extract of Oliveria decumbens was 7 h whereas for an ethanolic extract it was 28 h. Also, Oliveria decumbens extracts showed a synergistic effect in combination with doxycycline and tetracycline. In general, the similar values of MIC and MBC for Oliveria decumbens suggest that these extracts could act as bactericidal agents against Br. melitensis. | 10 | Role of international criteria in the diagnosis of autoimmune hepatitis显示文摘AIM: To study the clinical and laboratory characteristics of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), and compare them with International Autoimmune Hepatitis Group (IAHG) criteria. METHODS: Sixty consecutive patients with AIH attended the University Clinic at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Iran for a 12mo period and were assessed in a case series study. Serological and biochemical evaluations were carried out in all patients. Autoantibodies, such as antinuclear antibody (ANA), anti-smooth muscle antibody (ASMA), anti-liver-kidney microsomal antibody (ALKM-1) type 1, and perinuclear anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (P-ANCA) were evaluated in these patients. A liver biopsy was performed after diagnosis of the disease. Patients were evaluated in terms of their signs and symptoms, and laboratory results and the degree to which they corresponded with the diagnostic criteria of IAHG. In this study, both a comprehensive diagnostic scoring system and a simplified diagnostic scoring system were employed for AIH.RESULTS: Sixty patients, 2-0 male, 40 female, mean age 39.45 ± 17.50 years, participated in the study. Treatment began immediately after enrolment into the study. The percent distribution of the study population into definite and probable did not change after the treatment. The most common symptoms in descending order were fatigue (100%), icter (66.7%), abdominal discomfort (33.3%), abdominal distension (2-8.3%), dark urine (2-3.3%), edema (2-3.3%), hematemesis (2-0.0%), pruritus (2-0.0%), melena (11.7%) and pale stool (10.0%). At the physical examination, splenomegaly, ascites, hepatomegaly, epigastric tenderness and an abdominal mass were found in 50.0%, 16.7%, 13.3%, 5.0% and 3.3% of patients, respectively. Hypergammaglobulinemia was detected in 95.0% of cases. ALKM-1, P-ANCA, ANA and ASMA were positive in 71.4%, 66.7%, 42-.4% and 19.4% of cases, respectively. Portal hypertensive gastropathy (45.0%), esophageal varices (41.7%) and cirrhosis (40.0%) were the most prevalent complications of AIH, and there was no evidence of primary sclerosing cholangitis, ulcerative colitis and overlap syndrome in these patients. According to IAHG criteria, 80.0% of cases had a definite diagnosis, 15.0% had a probable diagnosis and 5.0% had no AIH. The percent distribution of the study population into definite, probable and no AIH did not change after using the simplified diagnostic scoring system for AIH. CONCLUSION: This research showed that the majority of cases in our study were appropriately diagnosed according to the IAHG criteria and simplified scoring system. | 13 | Thermodynamic study and methanothermal temperature-programmed reaction synthesis of molybdenum carbide显示文摘Nanostructured molybdenum carbide(Mo_2C) was successfully prepared from molybdenum trioxide(MoO _3) using methanothermal temperature-programmed reaction. Thermodynamic analysis indicated that in presence of methane, the formation of Mo_2 C from MoO _3 occurs through the path of MoO _3 → MoO _2 → Mo_2 C. The carburized MoO _3 was characterized using X-ray diffraction(XRD), CHNS/O analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller(BET) analysis, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy(FESEM). At final carburization temperatures of 700 and 800°C and at methane contents ranging from 5vol% to 20vol%, Mo_2 C was the only solid product observed in the XRD patterns. The results indicated that the effect of methane content on the formation of the carbide phase is substantial compared with the effect of carburization time. Elemental analysis showed that at a final temperature of 700°C, the carbon content of carburized MoO _3 is very close to the theoretical carbon mass percentage in Mo_2 C. At higher carburization temperatures, excess carbon was deposited onto the surface of Mo_2 C. | 14 | Modeling the effects of ore properties on water recovery in the thickening process显示文摘A better understanding of solid-liquid separation would assist in improving the thickening performance and perhaps water recovery as well. The present work aimed to develop an empirical model to study the effects of ore properties on the thickening process based on pilot tests using a column. A hydro-cyclone was used to prepare the required samples for the experiments. The model significantly predicted the experimental underflow solid content using a regression equation at a given solid flux and bed level for different samples, indicating that ore properties are the effective parameters in the thickening process. This work confirmed that the water recovery would be increased about 5% by separating the feed into two parts, overflow and underflow, and introducing two different thickeners into them separately. | 15 | Antimicrobial properties of Teucrium polium against some clinical pathogens显示文摘Objective:To explore the antibacterial effect of the alcoholic extracts of aerial parts of Teucrium polium,native in Iran on some pathogenic bacteria.Methods:Antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract(50 to 400 mg/mL) and methanolic extract(400 and 600 mg/mL) was evaluated by disc diffusion method.Results:The ethanolic extract results showed that Bacillus anthracis was the most sensitive species,while Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis were more resistant than others.In the case of the methanolic extract,Bordetella bronchiseptica was the most sensitive and Proteus mirabilis and Arcanobacterium pyogenes were the most resistant species.The hydroalcoholic extract of Teucrium polium had a relatively satisfactory effect on Salmonella typhi. | 16 | A survey on Hibiscus rosa-sinensis,Alcea rosea L.and Malva neglecta Wallr as antibacterial agents显示文摘Objective:To guide for selection of plants with antibacterial activity for further phytochemical works on the isolation and identification of the active compounds.Methods:Ethanolic extracts of 3 species from Malvaceae family were evaluated by agar disc diffusion method for antibacterial activity against some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria(Pseudomonas aeruginosa,Listeria monocytogenes,Staphylococcus epidermidis.Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae.Salmonella typhi,Bacillus cereus.Bacillus anthracis,Escherichia coli and Streptococcus pyogenes).The extracts were obtained from aerial parts of Hibiscus rosa(H. rosa)-sinensis(leaf and flower),Alcea rosea(A.rosea) L.(leaf and flower) and Malva neglecta(M. neglecta) Wallr(flower).Results:These extracts had inhibitory effects at different concentrations (0.05,0.10,0.20 and 0.40 g/mL) against above mentioned bacteria.Escherichia coli was the most resistant strain.The highest inhibitory zone was showed by ethanolic extract of M.neglecta against Staphylococcus epidermidis(22 mm) and followed by ethanolic extract from flower of H.rosa against Staphylococcus epidermidis and Staphylococcus aureus(20 mm).The Minimum Inhibitory Concentration(MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration(MBC) values against Staphylococcus epidermidis were equal(M1C=MBC=5 mg/mL for M.neglecta extract and for H. rosa extract MIC=MBC=20 mg/mL).Conclusions:These findings suggest that these native plants have good antibacterial properties that can be used for infection control and treatment and could also be as new source for antibiotics discovery and infection treatment. | Seyyed Mansour Seyyednejad Haniyeh Koochak Esmaeil Darabpour Hossein Motamedi | 2010 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2010,3,5: | 4 |
| 17 | CFD-DEM modelling of mixing and segregation of binary mixtures of ellipsoidal particles in liquid fluidizations显示文摘Solid-liquid fluidized beds of binary mixtures are widely used in many industries.Particle segregation may occur as particles can differ in size,density,or shape.Extensive studies have been conducted in the past to understand the effects of particlesize and density on the mixing and segregation,but the effect of particle shape has not been well addressed.Therefore,in the present work,CFD-DEM approach is employed to perform a numerical analysis of the effect of particle shape on the particle mixing and segregation phenomenon in liquid fluidization system.Different particle shapes from oblate to prolate are produced by varying aspect ratio of ellipsoids from 0.25 to 3,and eight binary mixtures of spheres and ellipsoids are examined.The results show that when oblate or prolate particles are added to spheres,the segregation takes place.The segregation degree increases with particle aspect ratio diverging from 1.0 and also liquid superficial velocity.The relationship of mixing index with aspect ratio under different liquid velocities is established,and a detailed explanation is given.It is revealed that increasing the projected area and hence the drag force results in the separation of ellipsoidal particles from spheres. | Esmaeil Abbaszadeh Molaei Aibing Yu Zongyan Zhou | 2019 | Journal of Hydrodynamics2019,31,6: | 3 |
| 18 | Effect of alumina content and heat treatment on microstructure and upconversion emission of Er^(3+)ions in oxyfluoride glass-ceramics显示文摘The effect of alumina content and heat treatment temperature and time, on microstructure and Er3+ (0.5 mol.%) emission of oxy-fluoride glass-ceramics were investigated in this research. Two values of 1.8 (SA1.8Er0.5) and 2.18 (SA2.18Er0.5) were selected in this re-search for SiO2/Al2O3 ratio. According to DTA results, precursor glasses were heat treated at 630, 660 and 690 °C for 4 h and some glasses were also heat treated at 630 °C for 48 and 72 h. The results indicated that alumina content had significant effect on phase separation and vis-cosity of the glasses. Therefore the size, size distribution, and volume concentration of nano CaF2 crystals which precipitated during the heat treatment depended on alumina content of the glass. Due to the much smaller size of the precipitated CaF2 crystals in the glasses of low alumina content, these samples maintained excellent transparency and had narrower crystal size distribution than the high alumina glasses. The crystal size was increased markedly with the temperature increasing from 630 to 690 °C. On the other hand a slight increase was observed in the crystal size by raising the heat treatment time in both glasses. Results indicated that in low alumina content glass (SA2.18Er0.5) the size of CaF2 nanocrystals was controlled in one order of magnitude. The increase of heat treatment time and temperature led to the incorporation of Er3+ ions into CaF2 crystalline phase, increasing significantly the upconversion intensity. | 19 | CELL ADHESION AND SURFACE PROPERTIES OF POLYSTYRENE SURFACES GRAFTED WITH POLY(N-ISOPROPYLACRYLAMIDE)显示文摘Cell adhesion plays a key role in various aspects of biological and medical sciences. In this study, poly(Nisopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM) was grafted on polystyrene surfaces using different solvents under UV radiation.Moreover, the relation between surface roughness and cell adhesion were evaluated by gravimetric, SEM, AFM, contact angle measurement and cellular analyses. The gravimetric analysis clearly indicated an increase in the grafting by adding10% methanol to water. The study of surface topography by AFM images showed an increase in the surface roughness and as a result of which, a decrease in wettablity was observed. At 37 C, epithelial cells were well attached and proliferated on the grafted surfaces, while these cells were spontaneously detached below 32 °C in the absence of any enzymes. Moreover,MTT assay and SEM images indicated good cell viability and an increase in cell adhesion caused by the roughness increase.
