Study of spatial distribution of sandy desertification in North China in recent 10 years显示文摘Sandy desertification is a land degradation characterized by wind erosion, mainly resulted from the excessive human activities in arid, semiarid and part of sub-humid regions in North China. It is one of main kinds of desertification/land degradation as well as water-soil erosion and salinization in China. Rapid and continuous spread of sandy desertification during last 50 years has created a major environmental and socio-economic problem in North China. Remote sensing monitored results in 2000 showed that the sandy desertified land area has been 38.57×104 km2. The area of potential to slightly sandy desertified land is 13.93×104 km2, moderately land 9.977×104 km2, severely land 7.909×104 km2 and very severely land 6.756×104km2. Sandy desertification mainly occurs in the semi-arid mixed farming-grazing zone and its northern rangeland zone, semi-arid dryland rainfed cropping zone and arid oasis-desert margin zone. The average annually developmental rate of sandy desertified land increased from 2,100tion in North China is 'overall deterioration, while local rehabilitation'. Already achieved rehabilitation results and monitoring assessment show that about 60% of desertified land in North China can be restored under the conditions of rational land-use ways and intensity. | WANG Tao, WU Wei, XUE Xian, SUN Qingwei & CHEN GuangtingKey Laboratory of Desert and Desertification, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, China Department of Environment Engineering, Peking University, Beijing 100871, China | 2004 | Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,z1: | 28
Reconstructing mean maximum temperature of growing season from the maximum density of the Schrenk Spruce in Yili,Xinjiang,China显示文摘To study the historical temperature variation in Yili of Xinjiang, the tree-ring chronologies of maximum density(MXD) and tree-ring width(TRW) were established with the Schrenk Spruce(Picea schrenkiana Fisch.et Mey) collected from six sites to analyze the characteristics and ability of response to climate change. The results suggest that the MXD chronology of the Schrenk Spruce from different sampling sites responded to climate change well and were positively correlated with the mean maximum temperature and the mean temperature from April to August in the study area. The mean maximum temperature anomaly from April to August, spanning the years from 1848 to 2000,was reconstructed by three MXD chronologies which were selected by stepwise regression. The reconstructed function was stable and explained 56.2% of the variance. The reconstructed results indicated a cold span of 153 years in spring and summer from the beginning of the 1950s to the beginning of the 1970s in the Yili valley. No strongly increasing tendency was detected in the mean maximum temperature anomaly from April to August during this reconstructed period. | CHEN Jin1,2,3,WANG LiLi1,4,5,ZHU HaiFeng1 & WU Pu1 1 Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100101,China 2 Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100049,China 3 Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100044,China 4 Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100085,China 5 Institute of Desert and Meteorology,China Meteorological Administration,ürümqi 830002,China | 2009 | Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,13: | 21
Temperature and precipitation trends in Minqin Desert during the period of 1961-2007显示文摘This paper analyzed the data of temperature and precipitation in Minqin, typical desert area in north-west China, during the period of 1961 2007 by linear regression. The result indicated that the increasing rate of the mean annual temperature in Minqin was higher than that of the average of China;and the temperature in February increased by 3.01oC averagely in the past 47 years. The climate in Minqin displayed an evident warming trend. However, there was no evidently increasing trend of precipitation in the past 47 years, and drought occurred during the whole growing season. | ShuJuan ZHU1,2,3,ZhaoFeng CHANG1,2,3 1 Gansu Minqin National Field Observation & Research Station on Ecosystem of Desertified Rangeland,Minqin 733300,China 2 Key Laboratory of Desertification Combating of Gansu Province,Lanzhou 733070,China 3 Gansu Desert Control Research Institute,Lanzhou 733070,China | 2011 | Journal of Arid Land2011,3,3: | 14
Climate instability in the Yili region, Xinjiang during the last glaciation显示文摘The climate is influenced by westerlies year in year out and the aeolian loess is widespread in the Yili region, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. Through the study of the loess section with a thickness of 21.5 m, much useful information about climatic change in this region during the last glaciation was gotten. Grain size analysis of loess samples in the section showed that the climatic change in the Yili region was of instability during the last glaciation and similar to those of the North Atlantic Ocean and Greenland. In correspondence with the Heinrich events, the percentage of the size fraction of loess with grain size less than 10 μm decreased in cold stadials in the Yili region. This result suggests that the westerly wind be strengthened during the cold periods. Compared with the stadials, the content of the loess with grain size less than 10 μm was increased in interstadials, which indicated that the strength of the westerly wind was weakened. It is obvious that the climate was instable | YE Wei, DONG Guangrong, YUAN Yujiang & MA Yingjie1. Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Urumqi 830011, China 2. | 5 | Sand harm in Taklimakan Desert highway and sand control显示文摘Re puted as a wonderful achievement of the world’s highway construction h istory, the Taklimakan Desert highway is now facing serious sand drift encroachment problems due to its 447-km-long passage of sand sea consist ing of crescent dunes, barchan chains, compound transverse dune ridges and co mplex megadunes. To solve some technical problems in the protection of the highway from sand drift encroachment, desert experts have been conductin g the theoretical and applied studies on sand movement laws; causes, severities and time-space differentiation of sand drift damages; and control ways in cluding mechanical, chemical and biological measures. In this paper the authors give an overall summary on the research contents and recent progress i n the control of sand drift damages in China and hold that the theoretica l research results and practices in the prevention of sand drift encr oachment on the cross-desert highway represent a breakthrough and has an epoch-making significance. Since the construction of protective forest along the cross-desert highway requires large amount of ground water, what will be its environmental consequence and whether it can effectiv ely halt sand drift encroachment on the highway forever are the questions to be studied urgently. | HAN Zhiwen,WANG Tao,SUN Qingwei,DONG Zhibao,WANG Xunming(Laboratory of Blo wn Sand Physics and Desert Environment, Cold and Arid Regions Environm ental and Engineering Research Institute, CAS, Lanzhou 730000, China) | 2003 | Journal of Geographical Sciences2003,13,1: | 13

Preliminary results of the study on wind erosion in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau using 137Cs technique显示文摘The worldwide fallout of caesium-137 (137Cs) associated with the nuclear weapon tests during the 1950s and 1960s has provided a valuable man-made tracer for studies of soil erosion and sediment delivery. But relatively few researchers have used it to estimate wind erosion. In this note, the 137Cs technique is introduced into the studies of wind erosion and its modern processes inthe Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Two 137Cs reference inventories of 982.11 and 2 376.04 Bq · m-2 wereestablished preminarily, distributed in the south and middle-north parts of the studied arearespectively. By analyzing the patterns of 137Cs depth profiles from sampling sites, the aeolianprocesses of erosion and deposition in nearly 40 years have been revealed, i.e. the shrub coppicedunes (S1) and semi-fixed dunefields (S3) experienced the alternation of erosion and deposition, while the grasslands (S4, S6 and S7) and dry farmlands (S5) suffered erosion only. | 8 | On the sand surface stability in the southern part of Gurbantünggüt Desert显示文摘Longitudinal dunes are the most widespread dune types in the world sand seas but comprehensive study on the sand surface stability is scarce. The southern part of Gurbantnggt Desert is mainly covered by longitudinal dune in which fixed and semi-fixed dunes occupy over 80% of the total area. Systematic analysis on the climatic conditions, the soil moisture and vegetation distributions, and the sand surface activities showed that the fixed and semi-fixed dunes are in a comprehensive low-energy wind environment. Snow cover and frozen soil provide a good protection to the ground surface in winter. The temporal distribution of precipitation and corresponding variation of temperature create a favorable condition for the desert plants growth, especially for the ephemeral plants. The occurrence of effective winds for sand moving in April to June coincides with the stage of relatively wet sand surface and good vegetation cover, which effectively keep the sand surface stable at the interdune and the plinth of the dunes. Activity sand surface appears only at the crest and the upper part of the sand dunes. | WANG Xueqin1,2, WANG Tao1, JIANG Jin2 & ZHAO Congju2 1. | 9 | Rainfall interception by sand-stabilizing shrubs related to crown structure显示文摘On the edge of the Tengger Desert in northern China, revegetation has changed the landscape from moving dunes to stabilized dunes covered by shrubs, which further modifies the pattern of rainfall redistribution. To study rainfall interception loss by shrubs and its relationship to rainfall properties and crown structure, throughfalls passing through crowns of Artemisia ordosica Krash.and Caragana korshinskii Kom.were measured using nine PVC cups under the canopy of each of the two shrubs during 73 rain events over a three-year period, with total rainfall of 260.9 mm.Interception losses of gross rainfall by A.ordosica and C.korshinskii account for 15% and 27% of the total on a crown area basis, and 6% and 11% on a ground area basis, respectively.Individual throughfall(T) and interception(I) were significantly related to rainfall amount(Pg),duration(D),and intensity(R).Ratios of throughfall to rainfall(T/Pg) and interception to rainfall(I/Pg) were not only significantly related to Pg,D,and R,but also to shrub species, and interactions of species with crown volume(CV) and leaf area index(LAI).Under most rain events, interceptions by C.korshinskii with greater CV and LAI were significantly higher than those by A.ordosica, and more rainfall interception occurred at locations closer to the stems of the two shrubs. For C.korshinskii,I/Pg had a significant positive linear relation with CV and LAI,while T/Pg had a significant negative linear relation with them.CV has a greater influence on T/Pg and I/Pg than does LAI.Using a regression method, canopy water storage capacities are estimated to be 0.52 and 0.68 mm,and free throughfall coefficient to be 0.62 and 0.47 for A.ordosica and C.korshinskii,respectively. | ZhiShan Zhang 1*,XinRong Li 1,XueJun Dong 2,XiaoHong Jia 1,MingZhu He 1,HuiJuan Tan 1 1.Shapotou Desert Research and Experiment Station,Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Lanzhou,Gansu 730000,China.2.Central Grasslands Research Extension Center,North Dakota State University,Streeter,ND 58483,USA. | 2009 | Research in Cold and Arid Regions2009,1,2: | 9
Magnetic characteristics of dustfall in urban area of north China and its environmental significance显示文摘Urban particulate pollutants not only affect urban air quality but also directly threaten public health. Lanzhou has been one of the most seriously polluted cities in the world due to its special geophysical location and weather conditions, which makes it an ideal place for urban particulate pollution study. In this study a set of environmental magnetic parameters (χlf, χfd%, χARM, SIRM, HIRM, SOFT and back field IRM) were measured and analyzed for the dustfall samples collected monthly during 1997.4―2000.5 and 2004.11―2005.10 at Lanzhou University campus (KLD and CCS) and at a clear site of Gaolanxian (GLX). Results demonstrate that the main magnetic minerals in the dustfall are magnetite, with some maghaemite and haematite. Cross plots of Mrs/Ms vs. Bcr/Bc and χfd% vs. χARM/SIRM indicate that the main magnetic grain sizes are pseudo-single-domain (PSD). The high concentration of magnetic min-erals in the dustfall indicates that Lanzhou is seriously polluted. The main pollution sources are an-thropogenic activities and nature dust, with the former posing a great threat during the whole year, which is different from the general view that the natural dust is the main contributor in summer. With great efforts of the government and local authority in the past decades, the air quality in Lanzhou has been improved in winter, but it is not so obvious in summer. This study also reveals that as a simple, rapid and accurate technology, environmental magnetism could be a valuable tool for urban pollution study. | XIA DunSheng1,2, YANG LiPing2, MA JianYing1, YU Ye1, WANG Guan2 & CHEN FaHu2 1 Key Laboratory of Desert and Desertification, Institute of Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, China 2 CAEP, Key Laboratory of West China’s Environmental System (Ministry of Education), Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China | 2007 | Science China Earth Sciences2007,50,11: | 8
Growth characteristics and response to climate change of Larix Miller tree-ring in China显示文摘As one of the earliest species used in dendrochronological studies, Larix responds sensitively to climate change. In this study, nine larch species and one variety from eleven sites were collected to study the growth characteristics of tree-ring width using dendrochronological methods. Ten residual tree-ring chronologies were developed to analyze their relationships with regional standardized anomaly series by Pearson’s correlation analysis. The results suggest that most of the chronologies had significantly positive correlations with the mean temperature and mean maximum temperature in May. The spring temperature evidently limited the radial growth of the larch species without precipitation control. The largest mean tree-ring width was found in Himalayan Larch in Jilong, whereas Master Larch in Si’er reflected the smallest mean value. Both species presented little climate information in this study. Chinese, Potanin, and Tibetan larches are significantly correlated with climate change, implying a huge potential for climate history reconstruction. The elevation of the sampling sites appears to be an important condition for tree-ring growth of larches responding to climate factors. | SUN Yu1,4, WANG LiLi1,2,3, CHEN Jin5, DUAN JianPing1,4, SHAO XueMei1,2 & CHEN KeLong6 1 Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100101, China 2 Institute of Tibetan Plateau Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100085, China 3 Institute of Desert and Meteorology, China Meteorological Administration, Urumqi 830002, China 4 Graduate University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100049, China 5 Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100044, China 6 School of Life and Geography Sciences, Qinghai Normal University, Xining 810008, China | 2010 | Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,6: | 8
Preliminary reconstruction of the desert and sandy land distributions in China since the last interglacial period显示文摘The desert and sandy land are the products of arid climate. The spatial distribution of modern deserts and sandy land in China and their relation to climate show following characteristics: arid and hyper-arid desert zones, at isohyet of less than 200 mm, are dominated by mobile dunes; semi-arid steppe and arid desert steppe with the precipitation between 200-400mm, are dominated by semi-fixed and fixed sand dunes; the precipitation of sub-humid forest grassland and humid forest zones with scattered fixed sand land is higher than 400 mm. With this as reference, in combination with considerable amount of paleoclimatic data in desert regions and adjacent regions, the distributions of desert and sandy land in China during the last interglacial period, the last glacial maximum (LGM), and the Holocene megathermal, were preliminarily reconstructed. The results compared with that of today show that the distribution of desert and sandy land in China was greatly dwindled during last interglacial period, and the mobile dune area was about two-thirds of that of today's, but greatly expanded during LGM. However, the dwindling area of desert and sandy land in the Holocene megathermal was smaller than that in the last interglacial period. The forcing mechanism was mainly related to the changes of East Asian winter and summer monsoon, south-northward swing of the westerlies and the variations of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau monsoon intensity caused by global climate changes during the cold and warm intervals since the last interglacial period. | CHEN Huizhong, SU Zhizhu, YANG Ping & DONG GuangrongKey Laboratory of Desert and Desertification, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, China State Key Laboratory of Loess Quaternary Geology, Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi’an 710075, China Institute of Loess Plateau, Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China | 2004 | Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,z1: | 6
Vicissitude of Sogo Nur and environmental-climatic change during last 1500 years显示文摘Lakes in arid zone are sensitive to climatic changes. The lacustrine sediment sequence in Sogo Nur has well and truly recorded climatic events such as the Sui-Tang Dynasty Warm Period, the Song-Liao Dynasty Cold Period, the Medieval Warm Period, the Little Ice Age and the 20th Century Warm Period. Commonly, the climate in warm Periods was relatively humid, accordingly the lake area extended and water level rose, and vice versa. Apart from climatic change, human activity is also an important factor of influencing lake vicissitude, and they played the dominant role alternatively during different periods; the factor of climatic change predominated in historical period, while since the beginning of the 20th century the utilization of water resources by human has became decisive. | JIN Heling, XIAO Honglang, SUN Liangying, ZHANG Hong, SUN Zhong & LI XiaozeKey Laboratory of Desert and Desertification, Cold and Arid Regions Environmental and Engineering Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lanzhou 730000, China School of Resources and Environment, Lanzhou University, Lanzhou 730000, China | 2004 | Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,z1: | 6
New views on age of the Salawusu Formation of Late Pleistocene in northern China显示文摘The Salawusu Formation in the Salawusu River basin of Inner Mongolia is a typical sequence of the Upper Pleistocene in northern China. However, there have been some different views about the division and age of stratigraphic facies since the establishment of the Salawusu Formation. According to the stratigraphic subdivision and dating of the Dishaogouwan section, it is thought that the fluviolacustrine-aeolian sand sequence from the Dishaogouwan section can be compared with loess, deep-sea deposit records and climatic fluctuations of glacial period. The Salawusu Formation of fluviolacustrine facies was formed in the last interglacial period from 140 to 70 ka BP, roughly corresponding to the fifth stage of deep-sea oxygen isotope, and developed in the same period as the palaeosol S1 on the Loess Plateau; the aeolian sand of the Chengchuan Formation was formed in the last glacial period from 70 to 10 ka BP, constituting the heteropic geological body along with the Malan Loess on the Loess Plateau; the | DONG Guangrong, SU Zhizhu and JIN Heling Institute of Desert Research , Chinese Academy of Sciences , Lanzhou 730000, China Xi an Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences , Xi’ an 710054, China Institute of Loess Plateau , Shanxi University, Taiyuan 030006, China | 1999 | Chinese Science Bulletin1999,44,7: | 5
The ecohydrology of the soil-vegetation system restoration in arid zones: a review显示文摘Arid zones, which cover approximately 40 percent of the earth's land surface, support complicated and widely varied ecological systems. As such, arid zones are an important composition of the global terrestrial ecosystem, and water is the key and abiotic lim-ited factor in ecosystem-driven processes in these areas. Ecohydrology is a new cross discipline that provides, in an objective and comprehensive manner, novel ideas and approaches to the evaluation of the interaction and feedback mechanisms involved in the soil-vegetation systems in arid zones. In addition, ecohydrology provides a theoretical basis of ecological restoration that is cen-tered on vegetation construction. In this paper, long-term monitoring and local observations in the transitional belt between a de-sertified steppe and a steppified desert at the Shapotou Desert Research and Experiment Station, Tengger Desert, in northern China, were evaluated. The primary achievements and related research progress regarding ecohydrology in arid zones were analyzed and summarized, as a keystone, and the response of soil ecohydrological processes to the changes in the species composition, structure, and function of sandland vegetation was discussed. Meanwhile, the long-term ecological effects and mechanism of regulation of vegetation on soil habitat and on water-cycling were considered. As a vital participant in the ecohydrological processes of soil-vegetation systems, the studies on biological soil crusts was also summarized, and related theoretical models of restoration based on the water balance was reviewed. | XinRong Li 1,2, ZhiShan Zhang 1,2, Lei Huang 1,2, LiChao Liu 1,2, XinPing Wang 1,2 1. | 16 | Aeolian Facies Belts in the Taklimakan Desert显示文摘At least at the beginning of the last glacial epoch, the facies belts of dune sand, sandy loam and loess formed by winds had existed in the Taklimakan desert and areas south of it. There were no appreciable changes in the NE and NW wind systems and their wind fqrces that deposited dune sand, sandy loam and loess in the global cold stage since the last glacial epoch (accordingly no marked shifts of the boundaries of these aeolian facies belts took place. In the global warm stage since then, the climate in the Taklimakan desert and areas south of it became warm and dry, resulting in ablation of substantial volumes of ice and snow in their surrounding mountains and thus forming alluvial and diluvial deposits in the region. The alluvial-diluvial actions, however, failed to change the general framework of aeolian facies belts. | Li Baosheng, Dong Guangrong, Zhang Jiasheng, Li Sen,Jin Heling, Chen Huizhong, Wen Xiangle, Wang Yao, Lanzhou Desert Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Lamhou, Gansuand Zhu YizhiXi’an Open Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Xi’an, Gansu Fei Zhenbi | 1995 | Acta Geologica Sinica(English Edition)1995,69,3: | 4

| 19 | ^(137)Cs tracing of lacustrine sediments in the Dalian Lake,Qinghai Province,China显示文摘Based upon the analysis of Cs and grain-size parameters, the total amounts of 137Cs deposition by wind and water in the Dalian Lake of Gonghe Basin, Qinghai Province are defined. The vertical profile of 137Cs in the lacustrine sediments exhibits three 137Cs activity maxima and one minimum. The major maximum corresponds to the global I37Cs fallout in 1963; the two secondary maxima correspond to the leakage of the Chernobyl reactor in 1986 and complete desiccation of the lake in 1994, respectively. The minimum corresponds to aeolian deposition caused by extensive reclamation in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The 137Cs data set was used to evaluate average sedimentation rate of the Dalian Lake since 1963. The deposition was stable in 1963-1986 and 1994-1998, and it was rapid during 1986?994.
