| 2 | A predictive score for retinopathy of prematurity by using clinical risk factors and serum insulin-like growth factor-1 levels显示文摘AIM: To detect the impact of insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1) and other risk factors for the early prediction of retinopathy of prematurity(ROP) and to establish a scoring system for ROP prediction by using clinical criteria and serum IGF-1 levels.METHODS: The study was conducted with 127 preterm infants. IGF-1 levels in the 1 st day of life, 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th week of life was analyzed. The score was established after logistic regression analysis, considering the impact of each variable on the occurrences of any stage ROP. A validation cohort containing 107 preterm infants was included in the study and the predictive ability of ROP score was calculated.RESULTS: Birth weights(BW), gestational weeks(GW) and the prevalence of breast milk consumption were lower, respiratory distress syndrome(RDS), bronchopulmonarydysplasia(BPD) and necrotizing enterocolitis(NEC) were more frequent, the duration of mechanical ventilation and oxygen supplementation was longer in patients with ROP(P<0.05). Initial serum IGF-1 levels tended to be lower in newborns who developed ROP. Logistic regression analysis revealed that low BW(<1250 g), presence of intraventricular hemorrhage(IVH) and formula feeding increased the risk of ROP. Afterwards, the scoring system was validated on 107 infants. The negative predictive values of a score less than 4 were 84.3%, 74.7% and 79.8% while positive predictive values were 76.3%, 65.5% and 71.6% respectively.CONCLUSION: In addition to BW <1250 g and IVH, formula consumption was detected as a risk factor for the development of ROP. | 3 | Investigation and modeling of water quality of Goksu River (Cleadnos) in an international pro- tected area by using GIS显示文摘Gksu Delta is an important wetland where the Gksu River reaches to sea in the eastern of the town Tasucu-Ice1. The delta is classified as a Wetland of International Impor-tance according to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The amount of fertilizers used in this area was 7200 tons in 2006. These pollutants affect the surface and groundwater quality negatively. The intensively used fertilizers and pesticides contain not only N- and P compounds but also some heavy metals. The contents of all pol-lutants in surface waters were determined for four different seasons between 2006 and 2008 and with these data a Geographic Information System (GIS) has been constructed by using Map Info. From the photometric heavy metal analysis, it is inferred that the excess concen-tration of Fe, Ni, Mn, Mo and Cu at some locations is the cause of undesirable quality for drinking purposes. The source of excess concentration of various heavy metals is the agri-cultural activities and fertilizers. It is determined that in all periods between 2006 and 2008 the heavy metals and other pollutants in the fertilizers and pesticides transported easily to river water with irrigation return flow. The organic pollutants, including COD, BOD, NH3 and NO3 followed the sharply increasing trends from Silifke city to Mediterranean Sea. | 4 | Airborne Pollen Grains Of Afyon, Turkey显示文摘The airborne pollen grains of Afyon have been studied for a two_year period (1999-2000) with a Durham sampler. A total of 14 367 pollen grains belonging to 40 taxa have been identified and recorded with some unidentified ones. Of them, 6 732 were identified in 1999 and 7 635 in 2000. Of the total pollen grains, 69.67% were arboreal, 26.64% non_arboreal and 3.68 % unidentified. The majority of the investigated pollen grains were from Pinus, Gramineae, Cupressaceae, Platanus , Chenopodiaceae/Amaranthaceae, Quercus, Ailanthus, Moraceae, Juglans , Salix, Cedrus and Rosaceae.
