1Applications of stable isotopes to study plant-animal relationships in terrestrial ecosystems显示文摘As natural tracers, stable isotopes have been extensively used in plant physiological, ecological and envi- ronmental research. Recently, animal physiological ecologists have also applied stable isotope techniques to study plant- animal relationships. The isotopic compositions of animal body generally reflect and integrate their diets over a time period ranging from hours to years to the lifetime of an indi- vidual. When animal living habitat changes or animals move to a new environment, the animal isotopic compositions will shift accordingly. Thus, stable isotope signatures of an ani- mal can truly reflect its food sources, habitat, distribution and movement patterns during a given time period. More- over, by analyzing animal-tissue isotopic compositions at different temporal scales, we can improve our understanding of animal adaptation to environmental changes. Stable iso- tope technique also provides an ideal tool to study animal foodweb relationship and community structure because of isotopic fractionation during the processes of nutrient as- similation by animals. Stable isotope technique can continu- ously measure animal trophic position in a foodweb, which can eventually reveal the predator-prey relationship and its role in determining matter balance and energy flow in the entire ecosystem. Stable isotope technique has been one of the most important and efficient tools in studying plant-animal relationship. 2Synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction in situ study of fine-grained minerals in shock veins of Suizhou meteorite显示文摘The synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction technique developed for in situ study ahigh pressure and temperature has also been used to investigate microscopic mineral inclusionsin ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic rocks and deep-mantle samples. Present study added twomore examples of successful utilization of synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction technique for insitu investigations of fine-grained (0.5―30 μm in size) minerals in very thin shock melt veins othe Suizhou meteorite: ( i ) X-ray diffraction measurement of extremely small-sized vein matrixminerals, and (ii) identification of the micron-sized new mineral tuite embedded in the vein matrixIt has been revealed that the fine-grained vein matrix consists of well crystallized garnet, kamacite and troilite, and the powder diffraction pattern consisting of 17 lines with d-values, intensities( I ), relative intensities (I/Io) and Miller indices, as well as the cell parameters for the new mineratuite has also been successfully obtained. 13Giant resonant light forces in microspherical photonics显示文摘Resonant light pressure effects can open new degrees of freedom in optical manipulation with microparticles,but they have been traditionally considered as relatively subtle effects.Using a simplified two-dimensional model of surface electromagnetic waves evanescently coupled to whispering gallery modes(WGMs)in transparent circular cavities,we show that under resonant conditions the peaks of the optical forces can approach theoretical limits imposed by the momentum conservation law on totally absorbing particles.Experimentally,we proved the existence of strong peaks of the optical forces by studying the optical propulsion of dielectric microspheres along tapered microfibers.We observed giant optical propelling velocities,0.45 mm s21 for some of the 15-20 mm polystyrene microspheres in water for guided powers limited at,43 mW.Such velocities exceed previous observations by more than an order of magnitude,thereby providing evidence for the strongly enhanced resonant optical forces.We analyzed the statistical properties of the velocity distribution function measured for slightly disordered(,1%size variations)ensembles of microspheres with mean diameters varying from 3 to 20 mm.These results demonstrate a principal possibility of optical sorting of microspheres with the positions of WGM resonances overlapped at the wavelength of the laser source.They can be used as building blocks of the lossless coupled resonator optical waveguides and various integrated optoelectronics devices.Yangcheng Li Oleksiy V Svitelskiy Alexey V Maslov David Carnegie Edik Rafailov Vasily N Astratov 2013Light(Science & Applications)2013,2,1:1
