Impact of postoperative omega-3 fatty acid-supplemented parenteral nutrition on clinical outcomes and immunomodulations in colorectal cancer patients显示文摘AIM: To investigate the effect of omega-3 fatty acid parenteral supplementation postoperatively on clinical outcomes and immunomodulation in colorectal cancer patients. METHODS: Forty-two patients undergoing radical colorectal cancer resection with an indication for total parenteral nutrition postoperatively were enrolled in this prospective, double-blind, randomized, controlled study. Patients received total parenteral nutrition supplemented with either soybean oil (LCT; Intralipid, Fresenius-Kabi, SO group, n = 21) or a combination of omega-3 fish oil and soybean oil (LCT:fish oil = 5:1, fish oil; Omegaven, Fresenius-Kabi, FO group, n = 21), up to a total of 1.2 g lipid/kg per day for 7 d postoperatively. A same volume calorie and nitrogen was administrated. Routine blood test, biochemistry, systemic levels of IL-6 and TNF-α, percentage of CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+ lymphocytes were evaluated preoperatively and on postoperative d 1 and 8. Patient outcome was evaluated considering mortality during the hospital stay, length of postoperative hospital stay, and occurrence of infectious complications. RESULTS: Both lipid regimens were well tolerated. No differences between the two groups were noticed in demographics, baseline blood test, biochemistry, serum levels of IL-6 and TNF-α, percentage of CD4+, CD8+ lymphocytes, and ratios of CD4+/CD8+. Compared with those on postoperative d 1, serum IL-6 levels onpostoperative d 8 were significantly depressed in the FO group than in the reference group (-44.43 ± 30.53 vs -8.39 ± 69.08, P = 0.039). Simultaneously, the ratios of CD4+/CD8+ were significantly increased in the FO group (0.92 ± 0.62 vs 0.25 ± 1.22, P = 0.035). In addition, depression of serum TNF-α levels (-0.82 ± 2.71 vs 0.27 ± 1.67, P = 0.125) and elevation of CD3+ and CD4+ lymphocyte percentage (12.85 ± 11.61 vs 3.84 ± 19.62, P = 0.081, 17.80 ± 10.86 vs 9.66 ± 17.55, P = 0.084, respectively) were higher in the FO group than in the reference group. Patients in the FO group trended to need a shorter postoperative hospital stay (17.45 ± 4.80 d vs 19.62 ± 5.59 d, P = 0.19). No statistically significant difference was found when stratified to mortality and occurrence of infectious complications. CONCLUSION: Postoperative supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids may have a favorable effect on the outcomes in colorectal cancer patients undergoing radical resection by lowering the magnitude of inflammatory responses and modulating the immune response. | Bin Liang, Shan Wang, Ying-Jiang Ye, Xiao-Dong Yang, You-Li Wang, Jun Qu, Qi-Wei Xie, Mu-Jun Yin, Division of Surgical Oncology and Division of Gastroenterological Surgery, Peking University People’s Hospital, Beijing 100044, China Author contributions: Liang B and Wang S contributed equally to this work Liang B and Wang S designed the research Liang B, Ye YJ, Yang XD, Wang YL, Qu J, Xie QW, Yin MJ performed the research and collected the data Wang S and Ye YJ supervised the research Liang B and Ye YJ analyzed the data Liang B wrote the paper and revised the manuscript. | 2008 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2008,14,15: | 31

Some open problems in granular matter mechanics显示文摘Granular matter is a large assemblage of solid particles, which is fundamentally different from any other type of matters, such as solid and liquid. Most models presented for granular matter are phenomenological and are only suitable for solving engineering problems. Many fundamental mechanical problems remain open. By analyzing characteristics of internal state structure, we propose that granular matter is intrinsically multiscale, i.e. microscale of particle size, mesoscale of force chain, and macroscale of the bulk of granular matter. The correlations among difference scales would be crucial. The mesoscale force chain network is determined by both particle properties and macroscopic boundary conditions. The evolution of the force the chain network contributes to macroscopic mechanical properties of granular matter. In addition, we discuss the drawbacks in simplifying contact forces in the current models, and the difficulties in analyzing the interaction of interstitial fluid in wet granular matter. As an appropriate application of granular matter, debris flow can be studied with granular matter mechanics; meanwhile, debris flow brings more challenges which certainly motivate future studies on granular matter. | Qicheng Sun a, Guangqian Wanga, Kaiheng Hub a Department of Hydraulic Engineering, State Key Laboratory for Hydroscience and Engineering, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China b Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chengdu 610041, China | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 25

Clostridium difficile infections in China显示文摘Clostridium difficile (C. difficile) infection has become one of the major hospital-associated infections in West-ern countries in the last two decades. However, there is limited information on the status of C. difficile infection inChinese healthcare settings. Given the large and increasing elderly population and the well-recognized problem ofover-prescribing of broad spectrum antibiotics in China, it is critical to understand the epidemiology and potentialrisk factors that may contribute to C. difficile infection in China. A literature review of available published studies, including those in Chinese language-based journals, was conducted. A review of the currently available literaturesuggested the presence of C. difficile infections in China, but also suggested that these infections were not particu-larly endemic. This finding should lead to better designed and greatly expanded studies to provide a more reliableepidemiologically-based conclusion on the actual status of C. difficile infection in China, including the identifica-tion of any associated risk factors. Such information is ultimately valuable to develop appropriate strategies to pre-vent C. difficile infection and the vast negative impact of such infections in China and other developing countries. | Ke Jin a,b,c,Shixia Wang c,d,Zuhu Huang a,b,c,Shan Lu b,c,daDepartment of Infectious Diseases,bJiangsu Province Key Laboratory in Infectious Diseases,cChina-US Vaccine ResearchCenter, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University,Nanjing,Jiangsu 210029,China d Department of Medicine,University of Massachusetts Medical School,Worcester,MA 01655,USA. | 2010 | The Journal of Biomedical Research2010,24,6: | 14
Motion behavior of particles in air-solid magnetically stabilized fluidized beds for separation显示文摘In order to study the settling mechanism of particles in an air-solid magnetically stabilized fluidized bed(MSFB) for separation,we carried out free settling and quasi-zero settling tests on the tracing particles. The results show that the main resistance forces as the tracing particles settled in an air-solid MSFB were motion resistance force and yield force. The motion resistance and yield forces greatly hindered the free settling of the particles by greatly decreasing the acceleration for settling process of the particles. The acceleration decreased from 3022.62 cm/s 2 to zero in 0.1 s,and in the end,the particles stopped in the air-solid MSFB.The yield force on particles increased with increasing the magnetic field intensity, resulting in decrease of the quasi-zero settling displacement. However, the yield force on particles decreased with increasing the fluidized air velocity, leading to increase of the quasi-zero settling displacement. When the structure and operating parameters of the air-solid MSFB were set up,the yield stress on particles stopped in an air-solid MSFB was a function of diameter and density of particles. The settling displacements of equal diameter particles increased with increasing their densities, and the settling displacements of equal density particles increased with increasing their diameters. | Song Shulei a,,Zhao Yuemin a,Luo Zhenfu a,Tang Ligang b a School of Chemical Engineering and Technology,China University of Mining & Technology,Xuzhou 221116,China b Coal Mining and Designing Department,Tiandi Science & Technology Company Co.Ltd.,Beijing 100013,China | 2012 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2012,22,5: | 13
Research progress on electrical signals in higher plants显示文摘This review introduces the characteristics of electrical signals in higher plants and their corresponding physiological significance, and describes in detail the impact of environmental factors (e.g. light and temperature) on the electrical potential of the plants. Also, we evaluate the measurement techniques used for electrical signals in plants, including intracellular measurement, extracellular measurement, measurement of the ion channel based on the patch-clamp technique and on the non-invasive microelectrode vibrating probe technique. We also give a brief review of the applications of these methods for investigating electrical signals in plants. The ionic mechanism of electrical activity in plants is then discussed in terms of environmental response in higher plants, and this is used to provide a theoretical basis for quantitative description of the electrical signals in plants. A model for interpretation of the electrical signal mechanisms in higher plants is discussed, but further experiments are required for the verification of this model. | Xiaofei Yana, Zhongyi Wang a, Lan Huang a, Cheng Wang b, Ruifeng Hou b, Zhilong Xu b, Xiaojun Qiao b a College of Information and Electrical Engineering, China Agricultural University, Beijing 100083, China b National Engineering Research Center for Information Technology in Agriculture, Beijing 100097, China | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 13
Coupled modeling of tumour angiogenesis, tumour growth, and blood perfusion显示文摘This paper proposes a more realistic mathematical simulation method to investigate the dynamic process of tumour angio-genesis by fully coupling the vessel growth, tumour growth and associated blood perfusion. The tumour growth and angiogenesis are coupled by the chemical microenvironment and the cell-matrix interaction. The haemodynamic calculation is carried out on the new vasculature, and an estimation of vessel collapse is made according to the wall shear stress criterion. The results are consistent with physiological observations, and further confirm the application of the coupled model feedback mechanism. The model is available to examine the interactions between angiogenesis and tumour growth,to study the change in the dynamic process of chemical environment and the vessel remodeling. | Y.Cai,1,2 S.X.Xu,1,a) J.Wu,3 and Q.Long 2,b) 1) Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science,Fudan University,Shanghai 200433,China 2) Brunel Institute for Bioengineering,School of Engineering and Design,Brunel University,Uxbridge,Middlesex,UK 3) School of Naval Architecture,Ocean and Civil Engineering,Shanghai Jiaotong University,Shanghai 200240,China | 2011 | Theoretical & Applied Mechanics Letters2011,1,4: | 8

Engineering of drug nanoparticles by HGCP for pharmaceutical applications显示文摘This paper reviews our work on the fundamental principles of high gravity controlled precipitation (HGCP) technology, and its applications in the production of drug nanoparticles, which was carried out in a rotating packed bed (RPB). Several kinds of drug nanoparticles with narrow particle size distributions (PSDs) were successfully prepared via HGCP, including the 300-nm Cefuroxime Axetil (CFA) particles, 200–400-nm cephradine particles, 500-nm salbutamol sulfate (SS) particles (100 nm in width), and 850-nm beclomethasone dipropionate (BDP) particles, etc. Compared to drugs available in the current market, all the drug nanoparticles produced by HGCP exhibited advantages in both formulation and drug delivery, thus improving the bioavailability of drugs. HGCP is essentially a platform technology for the preparation of poorly water-soluble drug nanoparticles for oral and injection delivery, and of inhalable drugs for pulmonary delivery. Consequently, HGCP offers potential applications in the pharmaceutical industry due to its cost-effectiveness, efficient processing and the ease of scaling-up. | Ting-Ting Hua, Jie-Xin Wanga, Zhi-Gang Shena, Jian-Feng Chena,b, a Key Lab for Nanomaterials, Ministry of Education, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, China b Research Center of Ministry of Education for High Gravity Engineering and Technology, Beijing University of Chemical Technology, Beijing 100029, China | 2008 | Particuology2008,6,4: | 7

Effects of disinhibition on spatiotemporal pattern of neuronal first recruitment in neuronal networks显示文摘The propagation of neuronal activities is a key feature to understanding information processing in networks. The analysis based on first-spikes of bursts in turn plays an important role in the research of neuronal activity propagation. Our focus here is to investigate how spatiotemporal patterns of neuronal first-spikes are affected by disinhibition. Multi-electrode arrays were used to record stimulation-evoked bursts of multiple neurons in randomly cultured neuronal networks. Both the precise timing of and the rank relationships between first-spikes were analyzed. Compared with evoked bursts in the network's native state, the precise first-spike latencies in its dis-inhibited state are more consistent and the propagation of its bursting activities is much faster. Additional points of interest are that disinhibited neuronal networks can be evoked to generate stable and distinguishable neuronal first recruitment spatiotemporal patterns specific to the stimulation site, and that the disinhibition may cause the original spatiotemporal patterns to change in a heterogeneous manner with regards to different propagation pathways. | Liangbin Pana,b,c,1, Xindong Songa,b,c,1, Guangxin Xiang a,b,c, Jing Zhua,b,c, Jing Cheng a,b,c,d,a Medical Systems Biology Research Center, Tsinghua University School of Medicine, Beijing 100084, China b Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China c National Engineering Research Center for Beijing Biochip Technology, 18 Life Science Parkway, Beijing 102206, China d State Key Laboratory of Biomembrane and Membrane Biotechnology, Tsinghua University, Beijing 100084, China | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 6

Comparison of chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay based on magnetic microparticles with traditional colorimetric ELISA for the detection of serum α-fetoprotein显示文摘A chemiluminescence enzyme immunoassay based on magnetic microparticles (MmPs-CLEIA) was developed to evaluate serum a-fetoprotein (AFP) in parallel with traditional colorimetric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).A systematic comparison between the MmPs-CLEIA and colorimetric ELISA concluded that the MPs-CLEIA exhibited fewer dosages of immunoreagents, less total assay time, and better linearity, recovery, precision, sensitivity and validity.AFP was detected in forty human serum samples by the proposed MPs-CLEIA and ELISA,and the results were compared with commercial electrochemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA) kit.The correlation coefficient between MPs-CLEIA and ELISA was obtained with R 2 0.6703;however,the correlation between MPs-CLEIA and ECLIA (R 2 0.9582) was obviously better than that between colorimetric ELISA and ECLIA (R 2 0.6866). | Qian-Yun Zhang a,b,Hui Chen a,Zhen Lin a,Jin-Ming Lin a a Beijing Key Laboratory of Microanalytical Methods and Instrumentation,Department of Chemistry,Tsinghua University,Beijing 100029,China b Institute of Biophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences,Beijing 100101,China | 2012 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2012,2,2: | 5
Ribosome Biogenesis Factor Bmsl-like Is Essential for Liver Development in Zebrafish显示文摘Ribosome biogenesis in the nucleolus requires numerous nucleolar proteins and small non-coding RNAs.Among them is ribosome biogenesis factor Bmsl, which is highly conserved from yeast to human. In yeast,Bmsl initiates ribosome biogenesis through recruiting Rcll to pre-ribosomes.However,little is known about the biological function of Bmsl in vertebrates. Here we report that Bmsl plays an essential role in zebrafish liver development. We identified a zebrafish bms1l^(sq163) mutant which carries a T to A mutation in the gene bmsl-like(bms1l).This mutation results in L^(152) to Q^(152) substitution in a GTPase motif in Bmsll.Surprisingly,bmsll^(sq163) mutation confers hypoplasia specifically in the liver, exocrine pancreas and intestine after 3 days post-fertilization(dpf).Consistent with the bmsll^(sq163) mutant phenotypes,whole-mount in situ hybridization(WISH) on wild type embryos showed that bmsll transcripts are abundant in the entire digestive tract and its accessory organs.Immunostaining for phospho-Histone 3(P-H3) and TUNEL assay revealed that impairment of hepatoblast proliferation rather than cell apoptosis is one of the consequences of bms1l^(sq163) giving rise to an under-developed liver. Therefore, our findings demonstrate that Bmsll is necessary for zebrafish liver development. | Yong Wanga,Yue Luoa,Yunhan Hong(b,),Jinrong Peng(a,),Lijan Lo(a,b,) a College of Animal Sciences,Zhejiang University,Hangzhou 310058,China b Department of Biological Sciences,National University of Singapore,Science Drive 4,Singapore 117543,Singapore | 2012 | Journal of Genetics and Genomics2012,39,9: | 4
Internet-based collaborative pseudo-dynamic testing of multi-span bridge structure显示文摘In this paper, the first Internet-based collaborative pseudo-dynamic testing of a multi-span bridge system in China's Mainland is presented in detail, which has been carried out by the collaboration of Hunan University (HNU), Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT) and Tsinghua University (TU) in China's Mainland, and the University of Southern California (USC) in the USA. The prototype system of Russion River Bridge at Southern California in America is illustrated. Different testing specimens, testing equipments and substructure boundary conditions at HNU and HIT laboratories are described. A network protocol platform for collaborative pseudo-dynamic testing, called NetSLab, and some function modules developed on the use of its standardized interface are introduced. Aiming at the MTS system widely used in structural testing, two approaches are presented to implement the communication interface between NetSLab and testing equipment, respectively, studied by HNU and HIT. The integrated networked testing system and collaborative testing procedures are presented. The testing results manifest that the networked collaborative testing system with powerful capability provides a testing platform with good coordination for complex models or actual structures, and achieves remote sharing of testing equipments. | Dapeng Wang a, Shizhu Tiana, Xinjiang Caia, Yunlei Fan b, Yan Xiaob,c a School of Civil Engineering, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin 150090, China b School of Civil Engineering, Hunan University, Changsha 410082, China c Department of Civil Engineering, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089, USA | 2009 | Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2009,19,5: | 4
High performance liquid chromatographic separation of thirteen drugs collected in Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2010(Ch.P2010) on cellulose ramification chiral stationary phase显示文摘The enantiomers separation of thirteen drugs collected in Ch.P2010 was performed on chiral stationary phase of cellulose ramification (chiralpak OD and chiralpak OJ) by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) methods, which included ibuprofen (C1), ketoprofen (C2), nitrendipine (C3), nimodipine (C4), felodipine (C5), omeprazole (C6), praziquantel (C7), propranolol hydrochloride (C8), atenolol (C9), sulpiride (C10), clenbuterol hydrochloride (C11), verapamil hydrochloride (C12), and chlorphenamine maleate (C13). The mobile phase consisted of isopropanol and n-hexane. The detection wavelength was set at 254 nm and the fiow rate was 0.7 mL/min. The enantiomers separation of these thirteen racemates on chiralpak OD column and chiralpak OJ column was studied, while the effects of proportion of organic additives, alcohol displacer and temperature on the separation were studied. And the mechanism of some of racemates was discussed. The results indicated that thirteen chiral drugs could be separated onchiral stationary phase of cellulose ramification in normal phase chromatographic system. The chromatographic retention and resolution of enantiomers could be adjusted by factors including column temperature and the concentration of alcohol displacer and organic alkaline modifier in mobile phase. It was shown that the resolution was improved with reducing concentration of alcohol displacer. When concentration of organic alkaline modifier was 0.2% (v/v), the resolution and the peak shape were fairly good. Most racemates mentioned above had better resolution at column temperature of 25 1C. When racemates were separated, the temperature should be kept so as to obtain stable separation results. | Ying Zhoua,b, Chao Maa, Yan Wanga, Qi-Ming Zhangb, Yi-Ying Zhanga, Jie Fua, Hong Gaoc, Li-Xun Zhaoc aState Key Laboratory of Bioactive Substances and Functions of Natural Medicines, Institute of Materia Medica, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100050, China bNational Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products, Beijing 100050, China cInstitute of Medicinal Biotechnology, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, Beijing 100050, China | 2012 | Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2012,2,1: | 4
