1Evolving concepts in bone infection: redefining “biofilm”,“acute vs. chronic osteomyelitis”, “the immune proteome” and “local antibiotic therapy”显示文摘Osteomyelitis is a devastating disease caused by microbial infection of bone. While the frequency of infection following elective orthopedic surgery is low, rates of reinfection are disturbingly high. Staphylococcus aureus is responsible for the majority of chronic osteomyelitis cases and is often considered to be incurable due to bacterial persistence deep within bone. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on clinical classifications of osteomyelitis and the ensuing treatment algorithm. Given the high patient morbidity,mortality, and economic burden caused by osteomyelitis, it is important to elucidate mechanisms of bone infection to inform novel strategies for prevention and curative treatment. Recent discoveries in this field have identified three distinct reservoirs of bacterial biofilm including: Staphylococcal abscess communities in the local soft tissue and bone marrow, glycocalyx formation on implant hardware and necrotic tissue, and colonization of the osteocyte-lacuno canalicular network(OLCN) of cortical bone. In contrast, S.aureus intracellular persistence in bone cells has not been substantiated in vivo, which challenges this mode of chronic osteomyelitis. There have also been major advances in our understanding of the immune proteome against S. aureus, from clinical studies of serum antibodies and media enriched for newly synthesized antibodies(MENSA), which may provide new opportunities for osteomyelitis diagnosis, prognosis, and vaccine development. Finally, novel therapies such as antimicrobial implant coatings and antibiotic impregnated 3D-printed scaffolds represent promising strategies for preventing and managing this devastating disease. 2Osteoclast fusion and regulation by RANKL-dependent and independent factors显示文摘Osteoclasts are the bone resorbing cells essential for bone remodeling.Osteoclasts are formed from hematopoietic progenitors in the monocyte/macrophage lineage.Osteoclastogenesis is composed of several steps including progenitor survival,differentiation to mononuclear pre-osteoclasts,fusion to multi-nuclear mature osteoclasts,and activation to bone resorbing osteoclasts.The regulation of osteoclastogenesis has been extensively studied,in which the receptor activator of NF-κB ligand(RANKL)-mediated signaling pathway and downstream transcription factors play essential roles.However,less is known about osteoclast fusion,which is a property of mature osteoclasts and is required for osteoclasts to resorb bone.Several proteins that affect cell fusion have been identified.Among them,dritic cell-specific transmembrane protein(DC-STAMP)is directly associated to osteoclast fusion in vivo.Cytokines and factors influence osteoclast fusion through regula-tion of DC-STAMP.Here we review the recently discovered new factors that regulate osteoclast fusion with specific focus on DC-STAMP.A better understanding of the mechanistic basis of osteoclast fusion will lead to the development of a new therapeutic strategy for bone disorders due to elevated osteoclast bone resorption.Cell-cell fusion is essential for a variety of cellular biological processes.In mammals,there is a limited number of cell types that fuse to form multinucleated cells,such as the fusion of myoblasts for the formation of skeletal muscle and the fusion of cells of the monocyte/macrophage lineage for the formation of multinucleated osteoclasts and giant cells.In most cases,cellcell fusion is beneficial for cells by enhancing function.Myoblast fusion increases myofiber size and diameter and thereby increases contractile strength.Multinucleated osteoclasts have far more bone resorbing activity than their mono-nuclear counterparts.Multinucleated giant cells are much more efficient in the removal of implanted materials and bacteria due to chronic infection than macrophages.Therefore,they are also called foreign-body giant cells.Cell fusion is a complicated process involving cell migration,chemotaxis,cell-cell recognition and attachment,as well as changes into a fusion-competent status.All of these steps are regulated by multiple factors.In this review,we will discuss osteoclast fusion and regulation.Lianping Xing Yan Xiu Brendan F Boyce 2012World Journal of Orthopedics2012,3,12:14
3亚低温状态下大剂量硫酸镁治疗弥漫性轴索损伤的临床研究(英文)显示文摘目的 观察联合使用亚低温及大剂量硫酸镁治疗弥漫性轴索损伤的临床效果。方法 6 4例诊断为弥漫性轴索损伤 ,GCS评分为 3~ 8的患者被随机分为治疗组和对照组。治疗组的患者入院 2 0min后给予静注 2 4mmol硫酸镁 ,再用 80mmol持续 2 4h静滴 ,同时自伤后 6h开始联合用亚低温治疗 ,使直肠温度控制在 33~ 35℃ ,治疗时间为 3~ 5d ,对照组按普通常规治疗。两组患者均于入院当天、治疗后 3d和 7d测血清神经元特异性异烯醇化酶(NSE)和GCS ,出院和 3个月后测GOS。结果 治疗组和对照组的血清NSE ,GCS和GOS分别为 (2 4 . 8± 19. 2 )g L ,12 . 3± 3. 3,4 . 6± 1. 3和 (4 9. 7± 2 3. 1)g L ,9.8± 2 . 8,3. 0± 1. 5 ,两组差异有显著性 (P <0 . 0 1)。赵灵 林小华 Boyce C 欧兴义 梁小兵 兰蒙 招建华 丁轩 2005中华急诊医学杂志2005,14,2:9
4Predictors of suboptimal bowel preparation in asymptomatic patients undergoing average-risk screening colonoscopy显示文摘AIM To identify risk factors for a suboptimal preparation among a population undergoing screening or surveillance colonoscopy.METHODS Retrospective review of the University of Michigan and Veteran's Administration(VA) Hospital records from 2009 to identify patients age 50 and older who underwent screening or surveillance procedure and had resection of polyps less than 1 cm in size and no more than 2 polyps. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease or a family history of colorectal cancer were excluded. Suboptimal procedures were defined as procedure preparations categorized as fair, poor or inadequate by the endoscopist. Multivariable logistic regression was used to identify predictors of suboptimal preparation.RESULTS Of 4427 colonoscopies reviewed, 2401 met our inclusion criteria and were analyzed. Of our population, 16% had a suboptimal preparation. African Americans were 70% more likely to have a suboptimal preparation(95%CI: 1.2-2.4). Univariable analysis revealed that narcotic and tricyclic antidepressants(TCA) use, diabetes, prep type, site(VA vs non-VA), and presence of a gastroenterology(GI) fellow were associated with suboptimal prep quality. In a multivariable model controlling for gender, age, ethnicity, procedure site and presence of a GI fellow, diabetes [odds ratio(OR) = 2.3; 95%CI: 1.6-3.2], TCA use(OR = 2.5; 95%CI: 1.3-4.9), narcotic use(OR = 1.7; 95%CI: 1.2-2.5) and Miralax-Gatorade prep vs 4L polyethylene glycol 3350(OR = 0.6; 95%CI: 0.4-0.9) were associated with a suboptimal prep quality. 5美国优质紫花苜蓿在宁夏中部干旱带的适应性研究显示文摘以宁夏盐池县本地苜蓿XM及宁夏益科农业科技有限公司引进的15个美国紫花苜蓿品种为研究对象,综合考虑生育期、株高、密度、产草量、茎叶比、越冬率等指标,开展苜蓿引种适应性研究.结果表明,以本地种XM为对照,15个外引种紫花苜蓿在生长发育特性上存在显著差异.其中,以品种ZHM,E3006,D4,D2表现较优,其返青早,青绿期长,鲜草产量分别是对照的1.52,1.45,1.28,1.25倍,干草产量分别是对照的1.46,1.25,1.22,1.19倍,且抗旱性强,品质优良,适宜在宁夏盐池县等中部干旱带大面积推广应用.高婷 张晓刚 纪立东 Orson Boyce Stanford A.Young 朱建宁 彭文栋 2009宁夏大学学报(自然科学版)2009,30,3:6
6特大城市交通出行预测:中国面临的挑战与机遇显示文摘作为城市交通规划的一个重要组成部分,城市交通出行预测的发展已经走过了60年。最初的研究工作于20世纪50年代在北美展开,随后延伸到欧洲、澳大利亚、新西兰和南美洲以及中国等发展中国家。作为一个相对成熟的领域,交通规划依然包含着许多新的研究方向,同时专业人员在正确合理的使用商业软件方面还有一定的困难。中国正在经历高速的城市化进程,这意味着对道路、公交系统、机场以及城际间高速公路建设有大量的投资。合理的投资决策需要对未来中国交通拥挤的都市进行出行预测。为了更好的了解中国交通出行预测的发展现状,笔者和几个大城市的交通规划部门以及大学的相关院系进行了探讨和交流。此文的初衷是记录下从会谈中所获得的有普遍意义的发现与印象,以及提供给参加讨论者的意见。David Boyce 熊倩 聂宇(译) 沈未(译) 2006城市交通2006,4,6:5

8The pleiotropic vasoprotective functions of high density lipoproteins(HDL)显示文摘The pleiotropic functions of circulating high density lipoprotein(HDL) on peripheral vascular health are well established. HDL plays a pivotal role in reverse cholesterol transport and is also known to suppress inflammation,endothelial activation and apoptosis in peripheral vessels. Although not expressed in the central nervous system, HDL has nevertheless emerged as a potential resilience factor for dementia in multiple epidemiological studies. Animal model data specifically support a role for HDL in attenuating the accumulation of P-amyloid within cerebral vessels concomitant with reduced neuroinflammation and improved cognitive performance. 9Frame loss error concealment for SVC显示文摘Scalable video coding (SVC), as the Scalable Extension of H.264/AVC, is an ongoing international video coding standard designed for network adaptive or device adaptive applications and also offers high coding efficiency. However, packet losses often occur over unreliable networks even for base layer of SVC and have severe impact on the playback quality of compressed video. Until now, no literature has discussed error concealment support for standard SVC bit-stream. In this paper, we provide robust and effective error concealment techniques for SVC with spatial scalability.
