Early J_2 basalts in SE China:Incipience of large-scale late Mesozoic magmatism显示文摘Magmatism in SE China was dormant during 204―180 Ma, but was reactivated in 180― 170 Ma (early J2), and then became more and more intensive towards the end of early Cretaceous. The small-scale early J2 magmatism is the incipience to long-term and large-scale magmatism in this region. A near east-west (EW) trend volcanic belt was distributed across south Hunan, south Jiangxi and southwest Fujian was formed during early J2 time. Along this belt from the inland toward the coast, the lithology of basalts changes from alkali into tholeiite, and the amount of erupted volcanic rocks and the proportions of rhyolites coexisting with the basalts increase. On the basis of geochemical char- acteristics of these basalts, we infer that the melting degree of source rocks and the extent of frac- tional crystallization and crustal contamination all increased whereas the depth of mantle source de- creased from the inland to the coast, which led to the variations of geological characteristics of the volcanic belt. In early J2, the western spreading Pacific plate began to subduct underneath SE China continental block, reactivating near EW trend deep fault that was originally formed during the Indos- inian event. The stress of the western spreading Pacific plate and the extent of asthenosphere up- welling increased from the inland to the coast, which is consistent with the generation and evolution of early J2 basalts. | XIE Xin1, XU Xisheng1, ZOU Haibo2, JIANG Shaoyong1, ZHANG Ming3 & QIU Jiansheng1 1. | 2 | Modelling of multi-bodies in close proximity under water waves——Fluid resonance in narrow gaps显示文摘Viscous fluid model and potential flow model with and without artificial damping force(f=-μV,μ the damping coefficient and V the local averaging flow velocity) are employed in this work to investigate the phenomenon of fluid resonance in narrow gaps between multi-bodies in close proximity under water waves. The numerical results are compared with experimental data available in the literature. The comparison demonstrates that both the viscous fluid model and the potential flow model are able to predict the resonant frequency reasonably well. However the conventional potential flow model(without artificial damping term) significantly over-predicts the wave height in narrow gaps around the resonant frequency. In order to calibrate the appropriate damping coefficient used for the potential model and make it work as well as the viscous fluid model in predicting the resonant wave height in narrow gaps but with little computational efforts, the dependence of damping coefficient μ on the body geometric dimensions is examined considering the parameters of gap width Bg,body draft D,body breadth ratio Br and body number n(n = 2,3),where Br = BB/BA for the case of two bodies(Body A and Body B) with different breadths of BA and BB,respectively. It was confirmed that the damping coefficient used for the potential flow model is not sensitive to the geometric dimensions and spatial arrangement. It was found that μ∈ [0.4,0.5] may guarantee the variation of Hg/H0 with kh to be generally in good agreement with the experimental data and the results of viscous fluid model, where Hg is the excited wave height in narrow gaps under various dimensionless incident wave frequencies kh,H0 is the incident wave height,k = 2π/L is the wave number and h is the water depth. | LU Lin1,2,TENG Bin3,CHENG Liang 4,SUN Liang5 & CHEN XiaoBo6 1 Center for Deepwater Engineering,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China 2 State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China 3 State Key Laboratory of Coastal and Offshore Engineering,Dalian University of Technology,Dalian 116024,China 4 School of Civil and Resource Engineering,The University of Western Australia,Crawly 6003,Australia 5 Centre for Offshore Research and Engineering,Department of Civil Engineering,National University of Singapore,117576,Singapore 6 Research Department,Bureau Veritas,Neuilly-Sur-Seine,92570,France | 2011 | Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2011,54,1: | 29
A 60-year journey of mycorrhizal research in China:Past, present and future directions显示文摘The significance of mycorrhizas(fungal roots in 90% of land plants) in plant nutrient acquisition and growth, element biogeo-chemical cycling and maintaining of terrestrial ecosystem structures has been globally established for more than 120 years.Great progress in mycorrhizal research in the past 60 years(1950-2009,1981-2009 in particular) has also been made across China, particularly in the mainland,Hong Kong and Taiwan. For instance,a total of 20 new and ~120 records of arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM) fungal species,30 new and ~800 records of ectomycorrhizal(EM) fungal species,a dozen of new and ~100 records of orchid mycorrhizal(OM) fungal species have been isolated by morphological observation and/or molecular identification in China since the 1950s.Great accomplishment has also been made in the following area, including fungal species richness and genetic structure, relationships between species composition and plant taxa, effects of mycorrhizal fungi on plant nutrient uptake and growth, resistances to pathogens and interactions with other soil microorganisms, potential of mycorrhizal fungi in phytoremediation and/or land reclamation, alterations of enzymatic activities in mycorrhizal plants, and elevated CO2 and O3 on root colonization and species diversity.Unfortunately, the international community cannot easily appreciate almost all Chinese mycorrhizal studies since the vast majority of them have been published in Chinese and/or in China-based journals. The aim of this review is to make a comprehensive exposure of the past and present China's major mycorrhizal research to the whole world, and then to suggest potential directions for the enhancement of future mycorrhizal research within and/or between the Chinese and international mycorrhizal community. | HE XinHua1,2,3*,DUAN YingHua2,CHEN YingLong4 & XU MingGang2 1School of Life Sciences,Yunnan Normal University,Kunming 650092,China 2Key Laboratory of Crop Nutrition and Fertilization,Ministry of Agriculture of China,Institute of Agricultural Resources and Regional Planning,Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences,Beijing 100081,China 3Centre for Ecosystem Management,School of Natural Resources,Edith Cowan University,Joondalup,WA 6027 State Centre of Excellence for Ecohydrology,School of Plant Biology,University of Western Australia,Crawley,WA 6009,Australia 4School of Earth and Environment,University of Western Australia,Crawley,WA 6009,Australia | 2010 | Science China(Life Sciences)2010,53,12: | 23

Multislice CT angiography in coronary artery disease: Technical developments, radiation dose and diagnostic value显示文摘Multislice computed tomography (CT) angiography has been increasingly used in the detection and diagnosis of coronary artery disease because of its rapid technical evolution from the early generation of 4-slice CT scanners to the latest models such as 64-slice, 256-slice and 320-slice CT scanners. Technical developments of multislice CT imaging enable improved diagnostic value in the detection of coronary artery disease, and this indicates that multislice CT can be used as a reliable lessinvasive alternative to invasive coronary angiography in selected patients. In addition, multislice CT angiography has played a significant role in the prediction of disease progression and cardiac events. Despite promising results reported in the literature, multislice CT has the disadvantage of having a high radiation dose which could contribute to the radiation-induced malignancy. A variety of strategies have been currently undertaken to reduce the radiation dose associated with multislice CT coronary angiography while in the meantime acquiring diagnostic images. In this article, the author will review the technical developments, radiation dose associated with multislice CT coronary angiography, and strategies to reduce radiation dose. The diagnostic and prognostic value of multislice CT angiography in coronary artery disease is briefly discussed, and future directions of multislice CT angiography in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease will also be highlighted. | Zhonghua Sun, Discipline of Medical Imaging, Department of Imaging and Applied Physics, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western Australia 6845, Australia | 2010 | World Journal of Cardiology2010,2,10: | 19
Timing of Holocene sea-level highstands by mass spectro-metric U-series ages of a coral reef from Leizhou Peninsula, South China Sea显示文摘Systematic mass spectrometric 230Th ages are reported for a Ponies coral reef terrace from Dengloujiao, Leizhou Peninsula, South China Sea. Seven episodes of coral growth were recognized in this terrace: 7125±96, 6764±29, 5826±37, 5006±54, 2543±24, 1915±15, and 1513±22 calendar years before present (cal. aBP). 50% of the coral age popula-tion fall between 7200 and 6600 cal. aBP, marking post-glacial stabilization of global sea level. Considering the facts that (i) Dengloujiao reef flat was measured at 1.6-2.5 m above modern tidal datum plane; (ii) modern Parties corals in the South China Sea are living at least ~1 m below the modern tidal datum plane; (iii) the top 20-30 cm of the reef was eroded; and (iv) crustal subsidence in the region since mid-Holocene was negligible, we conclude that the above age groups record at least two major periods (7200-5000 and 2500-1500 cal. aBP) of high sea-level at least 2.9-3.8 m above the present-day level. | ZHAO Jianxin & YU KefuDepartment of Earth Sciences, University of Queensland, Brisbane, Qld 4072, Australia (e-mail: j.zhao@earth.uq.edu.au) South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 501301, China (e-mail: kefuyu@scsi | 2002 | Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,4: | 18

Clinical features of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease-associated hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘BACKGROUND: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), especially nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, is a recognized risk factor for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, detailed analysis of the clinical features in patients with NAFLD and their association with HCC is lacking. This study aimed to update the clinical features of patients with NAFLD-associated HCC. DATA SOURCES: The clinical data of patients with NAFLD- associated HCC from 25 studies published between 1990 and 2010 in the Pubmed database were comprehensively reviewed. RESULTS: In a total of 169 patients with NAFLD-associated HCC, 72.8% were male. The median age at abnormal liver function tests and diagnosis of NAFLD and HCC was 60, 64 and 67 years, respectively. Most patients were obese (75%) and diabetic (59.8%), 32.3% had dyslipidemia, and 53% had hypertension. Nearly all patients (98.6%, 71/72) were complicated with at least one metabolic disorder. The majority (76%) of the HCC patients had a solitary tumor nodule, with the tumor size ranging from 0.8 to 20 cm in diameter (mean 3.4 cm). Most (61.1%) of the patients had moderately-differentiated HCC. In 40.2% of the patients, HCC occurred in the absence of cirrhosis. Among 130 patients, 57.7% underwent hepatectomy and 14.6% received liver transplantation. The mean follow-up of the treated patients for 25 months showed that 32.4% (24/74) died and 18.8% (9/48) had recurrence. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with NAFLD-associated HCC are usually accompanied with metabolic disorders. Regular surveillance in patients with NAFLD for HCC is necessary, especially for elderly men with metabolic syndrome. | Xiao-Yan Duan, Liang Qiao and Jian-Gao Fan Department of Gastroenterology, Xinhua Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai 200092, China Storr Liver Unit at the Westmead Millennium Institute, the University of Sydney at Westmead Hospital, Westmead, NSW 2145, Australia | 2012 | Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2012,11,1: | 16

The progress that has been made in the application of electrochemical measurement to monitor and control flotation plants is also considered. | R.Woods Faculty of Science and Technology, Griffith University, Nathan Campus, Queensland 4111, Australia | 2000 | 中国有色金属学会会刊:英文版2000,10,S1: | 12 |
Wide area real time kinematic decimetre positioning with multiple carrier GNSS signals显示文摘This paper presents the technical basis for wide area real time decimetre positioning services using multiple carrier signals transmitted by future GNSS such as modernized GPS and Compass systems. The first step is to form two ionosphere-reduced extra-widelanes (EWL) that have the minimal total noise levels in cycles, considering the effects of the ionospheric and tropospheric delays, orbital error, and phase noise terms in various observational environments. The proposed three carrier ambiguity resolution approach can determine the integer ambiguities of the selected EWL signals with geometry-free and geometry- based estimations respectively over the distances of typically hundreds of kilometres. With two ambiguity-fixed EWL signals, the kinematic positioning solutions can be achieved in decimetre level accuracy. A semi-simulation method is employed to generate three frequency Compass data to demonstrate the above expected performance for decimetre positioning services. Both theoretical and experimental results have demonstrated the overall 3D root mean square accuracy of better than 15 cm obtained through with a phase smoothing process over 120 epochs. The dominating error factor in this positioning result is the residual tropospheric biases, which would become less correlated as the baselines grow beyond hundreds of kilometres. With respect to dual-frequency based precise point positioning and wide area differential positioning solutions, a major advantage of using the third frequency signals is the convergence time being shorten from tens of minutes to a few minutes. In addition, due to the instant ambiguity resolution capability, phase breaks or cycle slips no longer affect the continuity of the solutions. This reliable decimetre positioning capability introduces a significant improvement to safety-of-life, liability-critical and professional applications. | FENG YanMing1 & LI BoFeng1,2 1 Faculty of Science and Technology, Queensland University of Technology, GPO Box 2434, QLD 4001, Australia 2 Department of Surveying and Geo-informatics Engineering, Tongji University, Shanghai 200092, China | 2010 | Science China Earth Sciences2010,53,5: | 11
Modeling of elastic wave propagation on a curved free surface using an improved finite-difference algorithm显示文摘Based on existing direct and imaging methods of a staggered finite-difference scheme, an improved algorithm for staggered finite-difference is proposed to implement rugged topographic free boundary conditions. This method assumes that the free surface can be implemented with horizontal and vertical free surface segments and their corners; the free surface passes through the grid points of shear stress components, instead of the normal stress components. Imaging is carried out for stress components in both horizontal and vertical directions, thus increasing the accuracy. To update particle- velocities, imaging and updating are first performed in the horizontal direction, and then in the vertical direction. The numerical results for elastic flat horizontal free surface with the imaging method and those for flat free surfaces of various slope angles with the proposed method are compared, and are shown to be in good agreement. The advantage of the proposed method is that only the stresses are dealt with in implementing the free surface into the staggered algorithm, which improves computation efficiency. | WANG Xiuming1,3 & ZHANG Hailan2 1. | 12 | Earthquake-controlled event deposits and its tectonic significance from the Middle Permian Wandrawandian Siltstone in the Sydney Basin, Australia显示文摘The Sydney-Bowen basin in eastern Australia is an elongate back arc-converted foreland basin system situated between the Lachlan Fold Belt in the west and the New England Fold Belt in the east. The Middle Permian Wandrawandian Siltstone at Warden Head near Ulla- dulla in the southern Sydney Basin is dominated by fossiliferous siltstone and mudstone, with a large amount of dropstones and minor pebbly sandstone beds. Two general types of deposits are recognized from the siltstone unit in view of the timing and mechanism of formation. One is rep- resented by the primary deposits from offshore to subtidal environments with abundant drop- stones of glacial marine origin. The second type is distinguished by secondary, soft-sediment deformational deposits and structures, and comprises three layers of mudstone dykes of seismic origin. In the latter type, metre scale, laterally extensive syn-depositional slump deformation structures occur in the middle part of the Wandrawandian Siltstone. The deformation structures vary in morphology and pattern, including large-scale complex-type folds, flexural stratification, concave-up structures, faulting of small displacements accompanied by folding and brecciation. The slumps and associated syn-sedimentary structures are attributed to penecontemporaneous deformations of soft sediments (mostly silty mud) formed as a result of mass movement of un- consolidated and/or semi-consolidated substrate following an earthquake event. The occurrence of the earthquake event deposits supports the current view that the Sydney Basin was located in a back-arc setting near the New England magmatic arc on an active continental margin during the Middle Permian. | DU Yuansheng1, G. | 13 | Experimental studies on perturbed acoustic resonant spectroscopy by a small rock sample in a cylindrical cavity显示文摘A measurement system for acoustic resonant spectroscopy (ARS) is estab-lished,and the effects of resonant cavity geometry, inner perturbation samples and envi-ronmental temperature on the ARS are investigated. The ARSs of the small samples with various sizes and acoustic properties are measured. The results show that at the normal pressure, the resonant frequency decreases gradually with the increase of liquid tem-perature in the cylindrical cavity, while the resonant amplitude increases. At certain pres-sure and temperature, both the resonant frequency and the amplitude decrease greatly when there exist air bubbles inside the cavity fluid. The ARS is apparently affected by the sample porosity and the sample location in the resonant cavity. At the middle of the cavity, the resonant frequencies reach their maximum values for all of the measurement samples. The resonant frequencies of the porous rock samples are smaller than those of the com-pacted samples if other acoustic parameters are the same. As the sample is moved from the top to the middle of the cavity along its axis, the resonant amplitude increases gradu-ally for the compacted rocks while decreases for the unconsolidated rocks. Furthermore, the resonant amplitude increases firstly and then decreases if the porosity of the rock sample is relatively small. In addition, through the comparisons between the experimental and theoretical results,it is found that the effects of the acoustic parameters and sizes of the samples and the size of the cylindrical cavity on the laboratory results agree well with the theoretical ones qualitatively. These results may provide basic reference for the ex-periment study of rock acoustic properties in a low frequency using ARS. | CHEN Dehua1,2,WANG Xiuming2,3,CONG Jiansheng1,XU Delong1,SONG Yanjie1 & MA Shuilong4 1. | 16 | An extended displacement discontinuity method for analysis of stress wave propagation in viscoelastic rock mass显示文摘An extended displacement discontinuity method (EDDM) is proposed to analyze the stress wave propagation in jointed viscoelastic rock mass (VRM).The discontinuities in a rock mass are divided into two groups. The primary group with an average geometrical size larger than or in the same order of magnitude of wavelength of a concerned stress wave is defined as 'macro-joints',while the secondary group with a high density and relatively small geometrical size compared to the wavelength is known as 'micro-defects'.The rock mass with micro-defects is modeled as an equivalent viscoelastic medium while the macro-joints in the rock mass are modeled explicitly as physical discontinuities.Viscoelastic properties of a micro-defected sedimentary rock are obtained by longitudinally impacting a cored long sedimentary rod with a pendulum.Wave propagation coefficient and dynamic viscoelastic modulus are measured. The EDDM is then successfully employed to analyze the wave propagation across macro-joint in VRM.The effect of the rock viscosity on the stress wave propagation is evaluated by comparing the results of VRM from the presented EDDM with those of an elastic rock mass (ERM) from the conventional displacement discontinuity method (CDDM).The CDDM is a special case of the EDDM under the condition that the rock viscosity is ignored.Comparison of the reflected and transmitted waves shows that the essential rock viscosity has a significant effect on stress wave attenuation. When a short propagation distance of a stress wave is considered, the results obtained from the CDDM approximate to the EDDM solutions, however, when the propagation distance is sufficiently long relative to the wavelength, the effect of rock viscosity on the stress wave propagation cannot be ignored. | L.F.Fan1,F.Ren1,G.W.Ma2 1 School of Civil and Environmental Engineering,Nanyang Technological University,Singapore,639798,Singapore 2 School of Civil and Resource Engineering,The University of Western Australia,Crawley,WA 6009,Australia | 2011 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2011,3,1: | 8
Simulations of explosion-induced damage to underground rock chambers显示文摘A numerical approach is presented to study the explosion-induced pressure load on an underground rock chamber wall and its resultant damage to the rock chamber.Numerical simulations are carried out by using a modified version of the commercial software AUTODYN.Three different criteria,i.e.a peak particle velocity (PPV) criterion,an effective strain (ES) criterion, and a damage criterion, are employed to examine the explosion-induced damaged zones of the underground rock chamber. The results show that the charge chamber geometry, coupling condition and charge configuration affect significantly the dynamic pressure exerted on the rock chamber wall. Thus the chamber is damaged. An inaccurate approximation of pressure boundary ignoring the influences of these factors would result in an erroneous prediction of damaged area and damage intensity of the charge chamber. The PPV criterion yields the largest damaged zone while the ES criterion gives the smallest one.The presented numerical simulation method is superior in consideration of the chamber geometry, loading density, coupling condition and rock quality. The predicted damage intensity of rock mass can be categorized quantitatively by an isotropic damage scalar.Safe separation distance of adjacent chambers for a specific charge weight is also estimated. | G.W.Ma1,H.Hao1,F.Wang2 1 School of Civil and Resource Engineering,The University of Western Australia,Crawley,WA 6009,Australia 2 Defense Science and Technology Agency,Singapore,109679,Singapore | 2011 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2011,3,1: | 7

| 20 | STUDY ON MICROWAVE DIELECTRIC PROPERTIES OF EPOXY RESIN MIXTURES USED FOR RAPID PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT显示文摘This paper presents a preliminary study on the dielectric properties and curing of three different types of epoxy resins mixed at various stoichiometric mixture of hardener, flydust and aluminium powder under microwave energy. In this work, the curing process of thin layers of epoxy resins using microwave radiation was investigated as an alternative technique that can’ be implemented to develop a new rapid product development technique. In this study it was observed that the curing time and temperature were a function of the percentage of hardener and fillers presence in the epoxy resins. Initially dielectric properties of epoxy resins with hardener were measured which was directly correlated to the curing process in order to understand the properties of cured specimen. Tensile tests were conducted on the three different types of epoxy resins with hardener and fillers. Modifying dielectric properties of the mixtures a significant decrease in curing time was observed. In order to study the microstructural changes of cured specimen the morphology of the fracture surface was carried out by using scanning electron microscopy. | P.K.D. V.
