1Significance of hepatitis virus infection in the oncogenicinitiation of hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the most common causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Chronic infection of hepatitis B virus(HBV) and/or hepatitis C virus(HCV) is a major risk factor in the development of the HCC, independently from excessive alcohol abuse and metabolic disease. Since the biology of HBV and HCV is different, their oncogenic effect may go through different mechanisms, direct and/or indirect. Viral hepatitis infection is associated with cellular inflammation, oxidative stress, DNA damage, that may lead to subsequent hepatic injuries such as chronic hepatitis, fibrosis, cirrhosis, and finally HCC. Direct oncogenic properties of these viruses are related with their genotypic characteristics and the ability of viral proteins to interact with host proteins, thus altering the molecular pathways balance of the cells. In addition, the integration of HBV DNA, especially the gene S and X, in a particular site of the host genome can disrupt chromosomal stability and may activate various oncogenic mechanisms, including those in hematopoietic cells. Recently, several studies also had demonstrated that viral hepatitis could trigger the population of hepatic cancer stem cells. 2Potential therapeutic applications of mesenchymal stem cells for the treatment of eye diseases显示文摘Stem cell-based treatments have been extensively explored in the last few decades to develop therapeutic strategies aimed at providing effective alternatives for those human pathologies in which surgical or pharmacological therapies produce limited effects.Among stem cells of different sources,mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)offer several advantages,such as the absence of ethical concerns,easy harvesting,low immunogenicity and reduced tumorigenesis risks.Other than a multipotent differentiation ability,MSCs can release extracellular vesicles conveying proteins,mRNA and microRNA.Thanks to these properties,new therapeutic approaches have been designed for the treatment of various pathologies,including ocular diseases.In this review,the use of different MSCs and different administration strategies are described for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy,glaucoma,and retinitis pigmentosa.In a large number of investigations,positive results have been obtained by in vitro experiments and by MSC administration in animal models.Most authors agree that beneficial effects are likely related to MSC paracrine activity.Based on these considerations,many clinical trials have already been carried out.Overall,although some adverse effects have been described,promising outcomes are reported.It can be assumed that in the near future,safer and more effective protocols will be developed for more numerous clinical applications to improve the quality of life of patients affected by eye diseases.Giuliana Mannino Cristina Russo Anna Longo Carmelina Daniela Anfuso Gabriella Lupo Debora Lo Furno Rosario Giuffrida Giovanni Giurdanella 2021World Journal of Stem Cells2021,13,6:2

6Calcific left atrium:A rare consequence of endocarditis显示文摘Usually, cardiac calcifications are observed in aortic and mitral valves, atrio-ventricular plane, mitral annulus, coronary arteries, pericaridium(usually causing constrictive pericarditis) and cardiac masses. Calcifications of atrial walls are unusual findings that can be identified only using imaging with high spatial resolution, such as cardiac magnetic resonance and computed tomography. We report a case of a 43-year-old patient with no history of heart disease that underwent cardiac evaluation for mild dyspnoea. The echocardiogram showed a calcific aortic valve and a hyper-echogenic lesion located in atrio-ventricular plane. The patient was submitted to cardiac magnetic resonance and to computed tomography imaging to better characterize the localization of mass. The clinical features and location of calcified lesion suggest an infective aetiology causing an endocarditis involving the aortic valve, atrioventricular plane and left atrium. Although we haven't data to support a definite and clear diagnosis, the clinical features and location of the calcified lesion suggest an infective aetiology causing an endocarditis involving the aortic valve, atrio-ventricular plane and left atrium. The patient was followed for 12 mo both clinically and by electrocardiogram and echocardiography without worsening of clinical, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic data.
