| 1 | New eolian red clay sequence on the western Chinese Loess Plateau linked to onset of Asian desertification about 25 Ma ago显示文摘The expansion of inland Asia deserts has considerably influenced the environmental, social and economic activities in Asia. Aridification of inland Asia, especially timing of the initiation of Asian desertification, is a contentious topic in paleoclimatology. Late Cenozoic eolian loess-red clay sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau, which possess abundant paleoclimatic and paleo-environmental information, can be regarded as an indicator of inland Asia desertification. Here we present a detailed magnetostratigraphic investigation of a new red clay sequence about 654 m in Zhuanglang located at the western Chinese Loess Plateau. Sedimentological, geochemical, mineralogical, and quartz morphological lines of evidence show that the red clay is of eolian origin. Magnetostratigraphic correlations indicate that this core sequence spans from 25.6 to 4.8 Ma, and typical eolian red clay appears as early as 25 Ma. This extends the lower limit of the red clay on the Chinese Loess Plateau from the previously thought early Miocene back into the late Oligocene. This new red clay record further implies that the inland Asia desertification was initiated at least by the late Oligocene. | 2 | Tom20 senses iron-activated ROS signaling to promote melanoma cell pyroptosis显示文摘Iron has been shown to trigger oxidative stress by elevating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and to participate in different modes of cell death,such as ferroptosis,apoptosis and necroptosis. However,whether iron-elevated ROS is also linked to pyroptosis has not been reported. Here,we demonstrate that iron-activated ROS can induce pyroptosis via a Tom20-Bax-caspase-GSDME pathway. In melanoma cells,iron enhanced ROS signaling initiated by CCCP,causing the oxidation and oligomerization of the mitochondrial outer membrane protein Tom20. Bax is recruited to mitochondria by oxidized Tom20,which facilitates cytochrome c release to cytosol to activate caspase-3;eventually triggering pyroptotic death by inducing GSDME cleavage. Therefore,ROS acts as a causative factor and Tom20 senses ROS signaling for iron-driven pyroptotic death of melanoma cells. Since iron activates ROS for GSDME-dependent pyroptosis induction and melanoma cells specifically express a high level of GSDME,iron may be a potential candidate for melanoma therapy. Based on the functional mechanism of iron shown above,we further demonstrate that iron supplementation at a dosage used in iron-deficient patients is sufficient to maximize the anti-tumor effect of clinical ROS-inducing drugs to inhibit xenograft tumor growth and metastasis of melanoma cells through GSDME-dependent pyroptosis. Moreover,no obvious side effects are observed in the normal tissues and organs of mice during the combined treatment of clinical drugs and iron. | 4 | A Positioning System based on Communication Satellites and the Chinese Area Positioning System(CAPS)显示文摘The Chinese Area Positioning System(CAPS) is a positioning system based on satellite communication that is fundamentally different from the 3'G'(GPS,GLONASS and GALILEO) systems.The latter use special-purpose navigation satellites to broadcast navi-gation information generated on-board to users,while the CAPS transfers ground-generated navigation information to users via the communication satellite.In order to achieve accurate Positioning,Velocity and Time(PVT),the CAPS employs the following strategies to over-come the three main obstacles caused by using the communication satellite:(a) by real-time following-up frequency stabilization to achieve stable frequency;(b) by using a single carrier in the transponder with 36 MHz band-width to gain sufficient power;(c) by incorporating Decommissioned Geostationary Orbit communication satellite(DGEO),barometric pressure and Inclined Geostationary Orbit communication satellite(IGSO) to achieve the 3-D posi-tioning.Furthermore,the abundant transponders available on DGEO can be used to realize the large capacity of communication as well as the integrated navigation and communication.With the communication functions incorporated,five new functions appear in the CAPS:(1) combination of navigation and communication;(2) combination of navigation and high accu-racy orbit measurement;(3) combination of navigation message and wide/local area differen-tial processing;(4) combination of the switching of satellites,frequencies and codes;and(5) combination of the navigation message and the barometric altimetry.The CAPS is thereby labelled a PVT5C system of high accuracy.In order to validate the working principle and the performance of the CAPS,a trial system was established in the course of two years at a cost of about 20 million dollars.The trial constellation consists of two GEO satellites located at E87.5° and E110.5°,two DGEOs located at E130° and E142°,as well as barometric altimetry as a virtual satellite.Static and dynamic performance tests were completed for the Eastern,the Western,the Northern,the Southern and the Middle regions of China.The evaluation results are as follows:(1) land static test,plane accuracy range:C/A code,15~25m;P code,5~10 meters;altitude accuracy range,1~3 m;(2) land dynamic test,plane accuracy range,C/A code,15~25m;P code,8~10m;(3) velocity accuracy,C/A code,0.13~0.3ms-1,P code,0.15~0.17ms-1;(4) timing accuracy,C/A code,160ns,P code,13 ns;(5) timing compared accuracy of Two Way Satellite Time and Frequency Transfer(TWSTFT),average accuracy,0.068ns;(6) random error of the satellite ranging,10.7 mm;(7) orbit determination accuracy,better than 2 m.The above stated random error is 1σ error.At present,this system is used as a preliminary operational system and a complete system with 3 GEO,3 DGEO and 3 IGSO is being established. | Guo-Xiang Ai Hu-Li Shi Hai-Tao Wu Yi-Hua Yan Yu-Jing Bian Yong-Hui Hu Zhi-Gang Li Ji Guo Xian-De Cai | 2008 | Chinese Journal of Astronomy and Astrophysics2008,8,6: | 33 |

| 7 | Barometric altimetry system as virtual constellation applied in CAPS显示文摘This work describes the barometric altimetry as virtual constellation applied to the Chinese Area Positioning System (CAPS), which uses the transponders of communication satellites to transfer navigation messages to users. Barometric altimetry depends on the relationship of air pressure varying with altitude in the Earth’s atmosphere. Once the air pressure at a location is measured the site altitude can be found. This method is able to enhance and improve the availability of three-dimensional positioning. The difficulty is that the relation between barometric pressure and altitude is variable in different areas and under various weather conditions. Hence, in order to obtain higher accuracy, we need to acquire the real-time air pressure corresponding to an altimetric region’s reference height. On the other hand, the altimetry method will be applied to satellite navigation system, but the greatest difficulty lies in how to get the real-time air pressure value at the reference height in the broad areas overlaid by satellite navigation. We propose an innovational method to solve this problem. It is to collect the real-time air pressures and temperatures of the 1860 known-altitude weather observatories over China and around via satellite communication and to carry out time extrapolation forecast uniformly. To reduce data quantity, we first partition the data and encode them and then broadcast these information via navigation message to CAPS users’ receivers. Upon the interpolations being done in receivers, the reference air pressure and temperature at the receiver’s nearby place is derived. Lastly, combing with the receiver-observed real air pressure and temperature, the site’s altitude can be determined. The work is presented in the following aspects: the calculation principle, formulae, data collection, encoding, prediction, interpolation method, navigation message transmission together with errors causes and analyses. | 8 | Hes1,an important gene for activation of hepatic stellate cells,is regulated by Notch1 and TGF-β/BMP signaling显示文摘AIM:To determine the role of Notch1 and Hes1 in regulating the activation of hepatic stellate cells(HSCs) and whether Hes1 is regulated by transforming growth factor(TGF)/bone morphogenetic protein(BMP) signaling.METHODS:Immunofluorescence staining was used to detect the expression of desmin,glial fibrillary acidic protein and the myofibroblastic marker α-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA) after freshly isolated,normal rat HSCs had been activated in culture for different numbers of days(0,1,3,7 and 10 d).The expression of α-SMA,collagen1α2(COL1α2),Notch receptors(Notch1-4),and the Notch target genes Hes1 and Hey1 were analyzed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction.Luciferase reporter assays and Western blot were used to study the regulation of α-SMA,COL1α1,COL1α2 and Hes1 by NICD1,Hes1,CA-ALK3,and CA-ALK5 in HSC-T6 cells.Moreover,the effects of inhibiting Hes1 function in HSC-T6 cells using a Hes1 decoy were also investigated.RESULTS:The expression of Notch1 and Hes1 m RNAs was significantly down-regulated during the culture of freshly isolated HSCs.In HSC-T6 cells,Notch1 inhibited the promoter activities of α-SMA,COL1α1 and COL1α2.On the other hand,Hes1 enhanced the promoter activities of α-SMA and COL1α2,and this effect could be blocked by inhibiting Hes1 function with a Hes1 decoy.Furthermore,co-transfection of pc DNA3-CAALK3(BMP signaling activin receptor-like kinase 3) and pc DNA3.1-NICD1 further increased the expression of Hes1 compared with transfection of either vector alone in HSC-T6 cells,while pc DNA3-CA-ALK5(TGF-β signaling activin receptor-like kinase 5) reduced the effect of NICD1 on Hes1 expression.CONCLUSION:Selective interruption of Hes1 or maintenance of Hes1 at a reasonable level decreases the promoter activities of α-SMA and COL1α2,and these conditions may provide an anti-fibrotic strategy against hepatic fibrosis. | Kai Zhang Yan-Qiong Zhang Wen-Bing Ai Qing-Ting Hu Qiao-Juan Zhang Lin-Yan Wan Xiao-Lian Wang Chang-Bai Liu Jiang-Feng Wu | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,3: | 23 |
| 9 | The principle of the positioning system based on communication satellites显示文摘It is a long dream to realize the communication and navigation functionality in a satellite system in the world. This paper introduces how to establish the system, a positioning system based on communication satellites called Chinese Area Positioning System (CAPS). Instead of the typical navigation satellites, the communication satellites are configured firstly to transfer navigation signals from ground stations, and can be used to obtain service of the positioning, velocity and time, and to achieve the function of navigation and positioning. Some key technique issues should be first solved; they include the accuracy position determination and orbit prediction of the communication satellites, the measur- ing and calculation of transfer time of the signals, the carrier frequency drift in communication satellite signal transfer, how to improve the geometrical configuration of the constellation in the system, and the integration of navigation & communication. Several innovative methods are developed to make the new system have full functions of navigation and communication. Based on the development of crucial techniques and methods, the CAPS demonstration system has been designed and developed. Four communication satellites in the geosynchronous orbit (GEO) located at 87.5°E, 110.5°E, 134°E, 142°E and barometric altimetry are used in the CAPS system. The GEO satellites located at 134°E and 142°E are decommissioned GEO (DGEO) satellites. C-band is used as the navigation band. Dual frequency at C1=4143.15 MHz and C2=3826.02 MHz as well as dual codes with standard code (CA code and precision code (P code)) are adopted. The ground segment consists of five ground stations; the master station is in Lintong, Xi’an. The ground stations take a lot of responsibilities, including monitor and management of the operation of all system components, determination of the satellite position and prediction of the satellite orbit, accomplishment of the virtual atomic clock measurement, transmission and receiving navigation signals to and from each satellite. In the north, the south, the east, the west and the center of Chinese main land, the function of CAPS demonstration system is checked and measured. In cars and on board the system is also checked and measured. The results are as follow: CA-code, horizontal positioning accuracy, 15-25 m (1σ), vertical, 1-3 m; P-code, horizontal positioning accuracy, 8-10 m (1σ), vertical, 1-3 m; velocity accuracy, CA-code, 0.13-0.30 m/s, P-code, 0.15-0.17 m/s; time accuracy, CA-code, 160 ns, P-code, 13 ns; determination accuracy of orbit ≤2 m. About 20 million US $ and two years are spent for the development of demonstration. METHODS From March 2014 to January 2015, 356 patients with CRC from four different hospitals in China were enrolled in the study, and all patients self-administered the EORTC QLQ-CR29 and the quality of life core questionnaire(EORTC QLQ-C30). Evaluation of the scores was based on the Karnofsky Performance Scale(KPS). The reliability and validity of the questionnaires were assessed by Cronbach's α coefficient, the Spearman correlation test and Wilcoxon rank sum test.RESULTS The EORTC QLQ-CR29 showed satisfactory reliability(α > 0.7), although the urinary frequency and blood and mucus in stool dimensions had only moderate reliability(α = 0.608). The multitrait scaling analyses showed good convergent(r > 0.4) and discriminant validity. Significant differences were obtained for each item in the different KPS subgroups(KPS ≤ 80; KPS > 80). body image and most single-item dimensions showed statistically significant differences in patients with a stoma compared with the rest of the patients. | 19 | Changes in Climate Factors and Extreme Climate Events in South China during 1961-2010显示文摘Daily climate data at 110 stations during 1961-2010 were selected to examine the changing characteristics of climate factors and extreme climate events in South China. The annual mean surface air temperature has increased significantly by 0.16℃ per decade, most notably in the Pearl River Delta and in winter. The increase rate of the annual extreme minimum temperature (0.48℃ per decade) is over twice that of the annual extreme maximum temperature (0.20℃ per decade), and the increase of the mean temperature is mainly the result of the increase of the extreme minimum temperature. The increase rate of high-temperature days (1.1 d per decade) is close to the decrease rate of low-temperature days (-1.3 d per decade). The rainfall has not shown any significant trend, but the number of rainy days has decreased and the rain intensity has increased. The regional mean sunshine duration has a significant decreasing trend of -40.9 h per decade, and the number of hazy days has a significant increasing trend of 6.3 d per decade. The decrease of sunshine duration is mainly caused by the increase of total cloud, not by the increase of hazy days in South China. Both the regional mean pan evaporation and mean wind speed have significant decreasing trends of -65.9 mm per decade and -0.11 m s-1 per decade, respectively. The decrease of both sunshine duration and mean wind speed plays an important role in the decrease of pan evaporation. The number of landing tropical cyclones has an insignificant decreasing trend of -0.6 per decade, but their intensities show a weak increasing trend. The formation location of tropical cyclones landing in South China has converged towards 10-19°N, and the landing position has shown a northward trend.
