| 3 | Metallurgy, the Father of Materials Science显示文摘The evolution of the discipline of materials science during the second half of the twentieth century is outlined. The concept emerged in the USA, almost simultaneously in an academic metallurgy department and in an avant garde industrial research laboratory, and its development subsequently all over the world has been a joint enterprise involving universities, industrial laboratories and government establishments. The initial impetus came unambiguously from the well established discipline of physical metallurgy, but from the 1960s onwards, the input from solid state physicists grew very rapidly, while materials chemistry is a later addition. Of all the many subdivisions of modern materials science, polymer science has been the slowest to fit under the umbrella of the broad discipline; its concepts are very different from those familiar to metallurgists. Two fields have contributed mightily to the creation of modern materials science: One is nuclear energy and, more specifically, the study of radiation damage, the other is the huge field of electronic and opto electronic materials in which physics, chemistry and metallurgy are seamlessly combined. | Robert W. Experimental and numerical results agree and show a thickening of the boundary layers, both dynamic and thermal. The thermal protection effectiveness has been quantified for the two geometries, and comparisons between discrete injection and blowing, in the case of the flat plate, were carried out, showing a stronger impact of the latter. | 9 | Transient Behaviour of a Heat Pipe with Extracapillary Circulation显示文摘Heat pipe devices, for their typical working mode, are particularly suitable for zero gravity applications, and have also been considered for applications in space satellites with nuclear generators because of the absence of active systems for the coolant circulation. The present work reports the results of experimental tests carried out on a heat pipe facility designed to investigate the thermal hydraulic performance of a water heat pipe. The device layout, configuration and geometry, simulate a heat pipe working mode utilizable in space applications under zero gravity conditions. The evaporating section, completely lined (covered) with wicks (sintered stainless steel), and nearly plane shaped, is housed in a cylindrical container. The obtained results show that the system can approach steady state conditions, at a pressure of 4 bar and with a heat flux transferred of about 150 W/cm 2, supporting an electric power step of about 1.8 kW. | G. | 12 | Water Quality Management of Beijing in China显示文摘At present, Beijing’s water resources are insufficient and will become the limiting factor for sustainable development for the city in the near future. Although efforts have been made to control pollution, water quality degradation has occurred in some of the important surface water supplies, aggravating the water resource shortage. At present, approximately three quarters of the city’s wastewater is discharged untreated into the urban river system, resulting in serious pollution and negatively influencing the urban landscape and quality of daily life. To counteract these measures, the city has implemented a comprehensive “Water Quality Management Plan” for the region, encompassing water pollution control, prevention of water body degradation, and improved water quality. The construction of municipal wastewater treatment plants is recognised as fundamental to controlling water pollution, and full secondary treatment is planned to be in place by the year 2015. Significant work is also required to expand the service area of the municipal sewage system and to upgrade and renovate the older sewer systems. The limitation on available water resources has also seen the emphasis shift to low water using industries and improved water conservation. Whilst industrial output has increased steadily over the past 1015 years at around 10% per annum, industrial water usage has remained relatively constant. | 13 | Assessing Mine Water Pollution: Geochemical Principles显示文摘The relative abundance and weathering rate of minerals that produce and consume acidity dictates whether a mine water discharge will be acidic or alkaline. Because metal ion solubility generally decreases with increasing pH, acidic waters are associated with greater risk from dissolved metals loads, while alkaline waters area associated with environmental degradation due to the oxidative precipitation of iron as ochrous deposits in surface water channels. Pyrite weathering produces acidity and dissolved iron loads, while calcite and, to a lesser extent, alumino silicate minerals, provide neutralising capacity that helps maintain circumneutral pH. Relating the relative abundance of these source minerals in the mining environment, and their relative rates of weathering, provides a conceptual framework within which to develop risk assessment and risk management approaches to minewater pollution. In particular the lifetime of contamination, and time scales to reach improved or detereorated mine water discharge quality is critical when assessing environmental impacts and risk, and when choosing treatment technology or selecting other approaches to handling minewater pollution. | Steven A. | 14 | Natural Biodegradation of Phenolic Compounds in Groundwater显示文摘A combination of field data and theoretical approaches is used to assess the natural attenuation and status of a complex plume of phenolic compounds (phenol, cresols, xylenols) in a deep, consolidated, UK Permo Triassic sandstone aquifer. Biodegradation of the phenolic compounds at concentrations up to 12500mg·L -1 is occurring under aerobic, NO - 3 reducing, Mn/Fe reducing, SO 2- 4 reducing and methanogenic conditions in the aquifer, with the accumulation of inorganic and organic metabolites in the plume. An electron and carbon balance for the plume suggests that only 6% of the source term has been degraded in 50 years. The residual contaminant mass in the plume significantly exceeds estimates of electron acceptor inputs, indicating that the plume will grow. Two detailed vertical profiles through the plume show that contaminant distributions are controlled more by source history than by biodegradation processes. Microbiological and mass balance studies show that biodegradation is greatest at the plume fringe where contaminant concentrations are diluted by transverse mixing. Active bacterial populations exist throughout the plume but biodegradation is inhibited in the plume core by high contaminant concentrations. Stable isotope studies show that SO 2- 4 reduction is particularly sensitive to contaminant concentration. The aquifer is not oxidant deficient but natural attenuation of the phenolic compounds in this system is limited by toxicity from the pollutant load and the bioavailability of electron acceptors. | 15 | Nonlinear Bubbling and Micro-Convection at a Submerged Orifice显示文摘The present paper describes the nonlinear behavior of bubble formation from a single submerged orifice and induced liquid motion (micro convection) surrounding the bubble. The experimental data reveals that departing periods of successive bubbles evolve multiple periods from single to triple periods when the gas flow rate is increased and that the micro convection evolves bifurcation phenomena similar to the so called 'period doubling' in chaos dynamics. The photographic observation using high speed video movies and data analysis indicate that the nonlinear features come from the deformation of the bubble and also the interaction between consecutive bubbles. A new comprehensive theoretical model is developed for describing the instantaneous bubble behaviors during formation and ascendance processes and for predicting the departing periods and sizes of successive bubbles for constant flow rate conditions. Owing to the estimation of instantaneous interactions between successive bubbles and the incorporation of the wake effect of previous bubbles, the present model describes the evolution process and mechanisms of bubble departing periods corresponding to different gas flow rate regimes. | 16 | Heat Transfer Characteristics of Wavy-Wall Channels in Micropolar Fluids显示文摘Forced convection flow through a sinusoidally curved converging diverging channel in micropolar fluids has been investigated numerically. A simple coordinate transformation is employed to transform the complex wavy wall channel to a parallel plate channel, and the cubic spline alternating direction implicit method is then used to solve the flow patterns and heat transfer characteristics. The effects of the wavy geometry, vortex viscosity parameter and Reynolds number on skin friction coefficient and Nusselt number have been examined in detail. Results show that the flow through a sinusoidally curved converging diverging channel forms a strong forward flow and a reticular vortex within each wave for larger Reynolds number and wavy amplitudes. The heat transfer rate of a micropolar fluid is smaller than that of a Newtonian fluid, but the skin friction of a micropolar fluid is larger than that of a Newtonian fluid.
