In the presence of a latent curing catalyst, PIE can give a crosslinkable epoxy resin waterborne dispersion. | 7 | The Influence of Trans-1,4-poly(butadiene-co-isoprene) Copolymer Rubbers(TBIR) with Different Molecular Weights on the NR/TBIR Blends显示文摘The molecular weight of a polymer is of prime importance and greatly influences the processing and mechanical properties of the polymer. Trans-1,4-poly(butadiene-co-isoprene) multi-block copolymer rubbers(TBIR) exhibit outstanding fatigue resistance, low heat build-up and good abrasion resistance, and are expected to be desirable candidate for high performance tire. Study on the influence of TBIR with different molecular weights on the structure and properties of TBIR and natural rubber(NR)/TBIR blends is essential to understand its contribution to the greatly improved dynamic properties of the rubber vulcanizates. TBIR with different molecular weights characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, GPC, and DSC were highly trans-1,4-copolymers with similar chain sequence distribution and crystalline trans-1,4-polyisoprene(TPI) blocks. The green strength and modulus of TBIR increased with the increasing molecular weight.The NR/TBIR compounds filled with 40 phr carbon black were chemically cured by sulfur for the preparation of NR/TBIR vulcanizates.The compatibility between NR and TBIR, filler distribution, crosslinking bond and density, and properties of NR/TBIR vulcanizates were studied. The NR/TBIR vulcanizates showed increasing tensile strength, hardness, modulus, rebound, abrasion resistance, and flexural fatigue properties with increasing molecular weight of TBIR. Furthermore, they presented significant improvement in flexural fatigue resistance when compared with that of NR vulcanizate. The contribution mechanism of TBIR on the NR/TBIR blends was discussed. Compared to most other nanophase materials that derive from inorganic materials, our products are prepared from natural cotton fibers. The products are of spherical shape with mixed crystal forms of cellulose Ⅰ and Ⅱ. The preparation conditions determine the properties of the products. Prior treatment is a critical procedure. The properties of the products are also strongly affected by such conditions as the kinds of acids used, the ratio of the acid mixture, the acid concentration, the ultrasonic agitation time and hydrolysis temperature. The number average molecular weight of NCC is determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The particle size and shape were determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). | 10 | Synergistic Effects of Aluminum Hypophosphite on Intumescent Flame Retardant Polypropylene System显示文摘The effects of aluminum hypophosphite(AHP) as a synergistic agent on the flame retardancy and thermal degradation behavior of intumescent flame retardant polypropylene composites(PP/IFR) containing ammonium polyphosphate(APP) and triazine charring-foaming agent(CFA) were investigated by limiting oxygen index(LOI), UL-94 measurement, thermogravimetric analysis(TGA), cone calorimeter test(CONE), scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). It was found that the combination of IFR with AHP exhibited an evident synergistic effect and enhanced the flame retardant efficiency for PP matrix. The specimens with the thickness of 0.8 mm can pass UL-94 V-0 rating and the LOI value reaches 33.5% based on the total loading of flame retardant of 24 wt%, and the optimum mass fraction of AHP/IFR is 1:6. The TGA data revealed that AHP could change the degradation behavior of IFR and PP/IFR system, enhance the thermal stability of the IFR and PP/IFR systems at high temperatures and promote the char residue formation. The CONE results revealed that IFR/AHP blends can efficiently reduce the combustion parameters of PP, such as heat release rate(HRR), total heat release(THR), smoke production rate(SPR) and so on. The morphological structures of char residue demonstrated that AHP is of benefit to the formation of a more compact and homogeneous char layer on the materials surface during burning. | 11 | Poly(lactic acid)Nanocomposites with Improved Flame Retardancy and Impact Strength by Combining of Phosphinates and Organoclay显示文摘To minimize the loading level of the char-forming phosphorus based flame retardants in the poly(lactic acid)(PLA) with reduced flammability, we have developed the flame-retarded PLA nanocomposites by melt blending method incorporating organically modified montmorillonite(OMMT) and aluminium diethylphosphinate(AlPi) additives. The influence of AlPi and OMMT on flame retardancy and thermal stability of PLA was thoroughly investigated by means of the limiting oxygen index(LOI), UL94 test, cone calorimeter, X-ray diffraction(XRD), thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electronic microscopy(SEM). The experimental results show that the PLA/AlPi/OMMT system has excellent fire retardancy.The LOI value increases from 19% for pristine PLA to 28% for the flame-retarded PLA. Cone calorimeter analysis of the PLA/AlPi/OMMT exhibits a reduction in the peak heat release rate values by 26.2%. Thermogravimetric analysis and SEM of cone calorimeter residues indicate that OMMT significantly enhances the thermal stability, promotes char-forming and suppresses the melt dripping. The research of this study implies that the combining of the flame retardant and organoclay results in a synergistic effect. | 15 | A Review Featuring Fabrication, Properties and Applications of Carbon Nanotubes(CNTs) Reinforced Polymer and Epoxy Nanocomposites显示文摘Carbon nanotubes(CNTs) have long been recognized as the stiffest and strongest man-made material known to date. In addition, their high electrical conductivity has roused interest in the areas of electrical appliances and communication related applications. However, due to their miniature size, the excellent properties of these nanostructures can only be exploited if they are homogeneously embedded into light-weight matrices as those offered by a whole series of engineering polymers. In order to enhance their chemical affinity to engineering polymer matrices, chemical modification of the graphitic sidewalls and tips is necessary. The mechanical and electrical properties to date of a whole range of nanocomposites of various carbon nanotube contents are also reviewed in this attempt to facilitate progress in this emerging area. Recently, carbonaceous nano-fillers such as graphene and carbon nanotubes(CNTs) play a promising role due to their better structural and functional properties and broad range of applications in every field. Since CNTs usually form stabilized bundles due to van der Waals interactions, they are extremely difficult to disperse and align in a polymer matrix. The biggest issues in the preparation of CNTs reinforced composites reside in efficient dispersion of CNTs into a polymer matrix, the assessment of the dispersion, and the alignment and control of the CNTs in the matrix. An overview of various CNT functionalization methods is given. In particular, CNT functionalization using click chemistry and the preparation of CNT composites employing hyperbranched polymers are stressed as potential techniques to achieve good CNT dispersion. | 16 | Preparation of Poly(phosphoric acid piperazine) and Its Application as an Effective Flame Retardant for Epoxy Resin显示文摘A phosphorus-nitrogen containing flame retardant additive of poly(phosphoric acid piperazine), defined as PPAP, was synthesized by the salt-forming reaction between anhydrous piperazine and phosphoric acid, and the dehydration polymerization under heating in nitrogen atmosphere. Its chemical structure was well characterized by Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopy, ^(13)C and ^(31)P solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The synthesized PPAP and curing agent m-phenylenediamine were blended into epoxy resin(EP) to prepare flame retardant EP thermosets. The effects of PPAP on the fire retardancy and thermal degradation behavior of cured EP/PPAP composites were investigated by limiting oxygen index(LOI), vertical burning(UL-94), thermogravimetric analysis/infrared spectrometry(TG-IR) and cone calorimeter tests. The morphologies and chemical compositions of char residues for cured epoxy resin were investigated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS), respectively. The results demonstrated that the flame retardant EP thermosets successfully passed UL-94 V-0 flammability rating and the LOI value was as high as 30.8% when incorporating 5 wt% PPAP into the EP thermosets. The TGA results indicated that the synthesized PPAP flame retardant additive possessed high thermal stability and excellent charring capability. Meanwhile, the incorporation of PPAP stimulated the epoxy resin matrix to decompose and charring ahead of time due to its catalytic decomposition effect, which led to a higher char yield at high temperature. The morphological structures and the analysis results of XPS for char residues of EP thermosets revealed that the introduction of PPAP benefited the formation of a sufficient, more compact and homogeneous char layer containing phosphorus-nitrogen flame retardant elements on the material surface during combustion. | 19 | INVESTIGATION ON SOUND ABSORPTION PROPERTIES OF KAPOK FIBERS显示文摘Sound absorption properties of natural kapok fibers have been investigated. Kapok fibrous assemblies with different bulk density, thickness, fiber length and orientation were manufactured, and their acoustical performances were evaluated by using an impedance tube instrument. Results show that the kapok fiber has excellent acoustical damping performance due to its natural hollow structure, and the sound absorption coefficients of kapok fibrous assemblies are significantly affected by the bulk density, thickness and arrangement of kapok fibers but less dependent on the fiber length. Compared with assemblies of commercial glass wool and degreasing cotton fibers, the kapok fiber assemblies with the same thickness but much smaller bulk density may have the similar sound absorption coefficients. Theoretical modelling of the acoustical damping performance of kapok fibers shows a good agreement with the experimental data. | 20 | Fluorinated Polyimide/POSS Hybrid Polymers with High Solubility and Low Dielectric Constant显示文摘A series of fluorinated polyimide/POSS hybrid polymers(FPI-4-FPI-16) were prepared via a facile synthetic route using 2,2'-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzidine, 4,4'-oxydiphthalic dianhydride and monofunctional POSS as starting materials. The hybrid polymers showed excellent solubility and film formation ability. Flexible and robust hybrid films could be conveniently obtained via solution-casting. The hybrid films demonstrated low dielectric constants and high thermal stability. Their dielectric constants were in the range of 2.47–2.92 at 1 MHz measured for their capacitance, and were tunable and decreased with an increase of POSS content. Their 10% weight loss temperatures were in the range of 539-591 ℃ and the weight residual at 800 ℃ ranged from 48% to 53% in nitrogen atmosphere. These hybrid films also possessed good mechanical properties and hydrophobic characteristics.
