1An Effective Method for Total RNA Isolation from Bamboo显示文摘Trizol reagent was used for RNA isolation from fresh leaves of Dendrocalamopsis oldhami, Bambusa ventricosa and Phyllostachys aureosulcata cv. Pekinensis. The extracted RNA from leaves had the normal ultraviolet absorption, the value of OD260/OD280 varied between 1.8-2.0. The 28s rRNA was more than two times brighter than 18s rRNA in electrophoresis. These results indicated that the total RNA was complete and not degraded. 2Sustainable Management of Planted Forests in China: Comprehensive Evaluation, Development Recommendation and Action Framework显示文摘China is one of the largest countries in the world in terms of planted forests area. Planted forests play an important role in soil and water conservation, food source, timber supply and energy security, but there are still many problems waiting for immediate resolution. Based on the current development status of planted forest in China, the paper made an comprehensive analysis for the positive impact and existing problems with regard to planted forests, and then came up with policy recommendations for promoting sustainable management of planted forests, mainly including: 1) to accelerate planted forests development and improve the quality; 2) to strengthen the protection and management, and quicken the development of planted forests; 3) to enhance the scientific planning for planted forests; 4) to reinforce the management for forests harvesting so as to promote the reasonable utilization of planted forests; 5) to perfect the management system for planted forest resources and improve the managerial capacity; 6) to complete related laws and regulations and improve the policy guarantee system; 7) to reinforce the forest tenure reform and establish a sound planted forest land transference system. 3Principles and Practice of Forestation in Saline Soil in China显示文摘With world population growth arable land area is decreasing. Saline soil is an important naturalresource. However it has not been well reclaimed owing to adverse conditions. Forestation is one way of saltysoil utilization; on the other hand, it can improve soil quality as well. The mechanism of salinity tolerance isthe basis for tree species selection when planting in salt affected soil. Different plants have various way ofsalinity tolerance, some are salt-exclusion, e.g. Elaeagnus angustifolia; some are salt-secretion, e.g. Tamarixspp.; some are salt-dilution, e.g. Hordeum vulgare; some are salt-avoidance, e.g. Rhizophora apiculata. Treesare favorable, which are salt tolerant and drought or waterlogging tolerant, as well as grow fast. After treespecies have been decided, site preparation including change or exchange of soil is necessary. Meanwhilesuitable density of trees and planting time must be carefully considered in terms of soil conditions andclimatic characteristics. 4Diurnal Variations of Greenhouse Gas Fluxes from Mixed Broad-leaved and Coniferous Forest Soil in Dinghushan显示文摘The subtropical mixed broad-leaved and coniferous forest, a typical successional monsoon forest, is one of the major forests in the subtropics of China. Therefore, it is very important to estimate the fluxes of the greenhouse gases from the forest soil in order to evaluate the impact of subtropical forests on the greenhouse gas emissions or absorptions. This study investigated the diurnal variations of fluxes of three greenhouse gases (CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O) from a mixed broad-leaved and coniferous forest soil. A static chamber-gas chromatograph technique was used to measure the fluxes of three greenhouse gases. By using the improved gas chromatography sampling system, the fluxes were analyzed with a single injection. In order to find out the effects of litter and seedling on the emissions or absorptions of these greenhouse gases, three treatments were set in the field:(1)bare soil surface (litter was removed previously); (3) litter + soil; (3) seedling + litter + soil. The experimental results demonstrated that the forest soil was a source of CO 2 , N 2 O and a weak sink of CH 4 .The daily fluxes of CO 2 , CH 4 , and N 2 O from the soil surface were in the range of 488.99700.57, 0.0490.108 and –0.025 –0.053 mg/(m 2 ·h ), respectively. CO 2 from the litter decomposition accounted for about 1/3 of the total CO 2 emission from the soil surface, while the litter and seedling had no significant effect on the fluxes of CH 4 and N 2 O. The fluxes of CO 2 and N 2 O measured at 9:00 11:00 a.m. were significantly different from their daily averages. 5Physical-Mechanical Properties of Sympodial Bamboo and Influence on Architecture Material Manufacture显示文摘Two kinds of big sympodial bamboo, D.Yunnanicus Hsueh and Whangee (D. Membranaceus Munro) andtheir physical and mechanical properties have been studied in the paper. The results showed that the whangee hasbetter physical properties than that of the Yunnanicus, such as higher density, lower tangential and longitudinal dryshrinkages. That also showed that Whangee has stronger mechanical properties in MOR and MOE, compressivestrength and shear strength parallel to the grain. 6Effects of Ultra-drying on Viability and Physiological Characteristics of Platycladus orientalis Seed from Arid and Semiarid Areas of Northwest China显示文摘In order to supply quality seed for vegetation restoration in arid and semiarid areas of Northwest China, the effects of Platycladus orientalis seed storage under ultra-drying and accelerated aging were studied. The seeds were dried from 6.8% to 5.1%, 4.4%, 3.7% and 2.2% MC, respectively, in a desiccator with the silica gel. The germination energy, germination percentage, germination index and vigor index of the seed were investigated. After ultra-drying, groups of seeds were carried on the accelerated aging tests in an oven at 50 oC for 10, 20 and 30 d , respectively, and the physiological indexes, including relative conductivity, dehydrogenase activity and α-amylase activity were tested. The results show that the ultra-dried seeds with 3.7% MC have the highest germination energy, germination percentage, germination index and vigor index. After aging, the dehydrogenase activity and α-amylase activity of the group of seeds of 3.7% MC were higher than those of 6.8%, while the relative conductivity of the group of 3.7% is lower than that of 6.8%. 7Policies, Actions and Effects for China's Forestry Response to Global Climate Change显示文摘Climate change is a great concern of various countries, the public and science community, and forest plays an important role in mitigating climate change. The paper made a comprehensive analysis regarding the policy selections of China to promote forestry response to the global climate change, and elaborated the concrete actions and achievements in this regard. Policy selections include: 1) Reinforce tree planting and afforestation, increase the forested area and enhance the capacity of carbon sequestration; 2) Improve forest management and the quality of existing stands, and improve the carbon sequestration services provided by forest ecosystem; 3) Strengthen the soil protection on wetland and forestland, and exert the potentials of carbon sequestration; 4) Boost the nature protection, and conserve the biodiversity; 5) Vigorously exploit forestry bio-energy, and reduce the GHG emission; 6) Enhance the prevention and control of forest fires, diseases and pests as well as of illegal expropriation of forest land, and effectively control the GHG emission; 7) Appropriately increase the use of timber, further improve the utilization rate of timber, extend the use life-span of timber and strengthen the carbon-storing function of timber products; 8) Actively implement forestry programs for carbon sequestration and widen the financing channels for forestry development and carbon sequestration. Meanwhile, with the concrete actions in forestry response to climate change, e.g. setting up a specialized agency responsible for the response to climate change, establishing Asian-Pacific Network for Sustainable Forest Management and Rehabilitation, launching the national evaluation of preferential development areas for forestry CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) projects, initiating the pilot projects for Afforestation and Reforestation Project under the CDM, and creating and operating China Green Carbon Fund, China has made great achievements in her response to climate change. 8Structure and Property of Bamboo Fiber显示文摘The chemical composition, fiber characteristics, crystalline structure, mechanical properties and thermal behavior of the five species of bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis cv.Pachyloe, Bambusa tootisk, Arundinaia amabilis, B.vulgaris cv. Vittata, and Dendrocalamus affinis) were studied with IR, X-ray, DSC and chemical analyses. The results indicated that the benzene-ethanol extractive content of bamboo was higher than that of wood, the content of lignin and the content of pentosan were 19.1% - 25.3% and 14.9% - 22.6%, respectively. Except for Ph. edulis cv. Pachyloe, the cellulose content in the other 4 species was over 50%. The average length of fiber of D. affinis was the longest (1.861 mm). The length/ width ratio of bamboo fiber was also higher than that of wood, and it was the highest for B.tootisk, which reached 142. The results of IR and X-ray confirmed that crystalline structure of bamboo fibers was cellulose, and A. amabilis had the highest crystallinity index. The differential thermal analysis (DSC) can be one of the methods to identify various fiber materials. After steam explosive pretreatment, cellulose content of D. affinis had increased from 50.5% to 69.2%, the crystallinity index had increased and the breaking tenacity of bamboo fibers was suitable for producing textile products, indicating that steam explosion is an useful pretreatment for bamboo fibers made into composite materials and textiles.JIANG Jianxin1 YANG Zhongkai2 ZHU Liwei1 SHI Limin2 YAN Lijie1 1. 9Developing Agroforestry in Slopelands to Combat Non-point Pollution in China显示文摘The status of agricultural non-point source (NPS) pollution in China is quite austere owing to lots of factors, the characteristics of which include severe N, P eutrophications in water bodies, unsuitable structure of agriculture and the lack of reasonable management. It was well known that forest could play an important role to control soil & water erosion, uptake extra soil nutrients as well. However forest coverage is rather low in the headwaters region. The research on the causes of NSP pollution and the significance by developing agroforestry to deal with the problem is presented in the paper, as well as the function of agroforestry and the related measures of pollution controlling, e.g., riparian forest buffer zones building. As a conclusion, controlling the loss of soil and water is regarded as an important crucial action and major research direction in the field. 10Community Structure of Urban Forest and Disposition Characteristics of Trees in Hefei Ring Park显示文摘Themethods of vegetation ecology were used to analyze the community structure of Hefei Ring Park, andspecies composition, distribution patternoftree heightand DBH weredescribed.Through calculation of tree growth index and association correlation of component species, the community structures were analyzed. 11Study on Cultural Technologies and Salt-resistance of Nitraria sibirica in Coastal Areas with Serious Salt-affected Soil显示文摘In this research, five Nitraria sibirica provenances such as Dayilu were selected to do experiment of salt-resistance, combining fixed plots test with typical plot investigation, measuring survival rate and growth as main indicators. The experiments of main cultural technology were done on Nitraria sibirica in 4 types of site preparation, 3 types of planting, 3 designs for planting density. The Nitraria sibirica experiments for the effects of curbing salt and improving soil were done by testing soil nutrients, salt content, soil physical properties as focal points in typical site of 3-4 years woods. The experiment results showed that the Nitraria sibirica could survive well with soil salt content of 0.6%, and that survival rate declined distinctively as soil salt content exceeded 0.8%. However, high soil salt content did not influence growth in the year of planting. There were obvious differences in salt-tolerance among Nitraria sibirica provenances; Dayilu was the best on salt-tolerance, the other 4 provenances had no differences, and obviously inferior to Dayilu. The different types of site preparation clearly influenced planting survival rate, conserving rate and growth. The method of two-ploughing-two-harrowing was the best among all 4 types of site preparation. Seed forestation was largely limited, bared-rooted seedling forestation may be popularised when soil salt content was less than 1% and soil moisture content was better in spring. Forestation with container seedling was suited to coastal saline soil in rainy season. The optimum planting density of Nitraria sibirica was 2 505/ha in the Yellow River Delta area in view of coverage rate, yield of fruits and cost of planting. 12Quantitative Analysis on Measure Results by Resistograh for Wood Decay of Ancient Architecture显示文摘The air-dried density, bending strength (MOR) and compressive strength parallel to grain of different grades of rotten wood were measured with test specimens of 100-130 year-old larch (Larix sp.) collected in Wu Ying Dian, the Forbidden City. In addition, the MOR of specimens was measured by Resistograph and the correlations were analyzed between resistance value and mechanical properties of wood. The correlations are significant for quantitative evaluation of wood structural condition by Resistograph. The results showed that wood air-dried density, strength properties and resistance values decreased significantly with the increase of decay degree, and there were remarkable differences among various grades of wood. Based on the rotten degree, the attenuation rate is in the following order: MOR> compressive strength parallel to grain > air-dried wood density > resistance value, and the above 4 indexes were 32%, 53%, 73% and 74% of those of intact wood, respectively, when the degree of rotten wood reached grade 3. Significant positive correlation at 0.01 level was showed between the wave trough values and wood air-dried density, MOR, compressive strength parallel to grain. The correlations between the wave peak values and the average value and air-dried wood density, MOR reached 0.01 level, and the correlations between the wave peak values and the average value and compressive strength parallel to grain reached 0.05 level. One of the ways to realize it is to introduce the chemical plating which has already been developed in electron industry into wood processing. 14Effects of Different Covering Ways on Emergence Rate of Sophora japonica L.Afforested by Direct Seeding显示文摘In order to maintain higher emergence rate with direct seeding in Shandong rocky mountain, effects of different covering ways on emergence rate of Sophora japonica L. direct seeding were studied. The results showed that both mulching film and grass cover could effectively increase the moisture content of the soil at the depth of 0-30 cm, contributing to soil moisture conservation and the inhibition of soil evaporation, which created favorable moisture environment for the growth of S. japonica seeds. Both the emergence rate and the seedling height under mulching film had greater improvement and partly enhanced by 26.65% and 6.85 cm respectively, and mulching film also helped S. japonica seeds emerge and ensured the seedling growth. The emergence rate and the seedling height under grass cover had been also raised in some degree, but they were much worse than those under mulching film. The emergence rate and the seedling height under block cover were not significantly increased. 15Global Planted Forest Development: Opportunities,Challenges and Policy Choices显示文摘In recent decades, there has seen a dramatic expansion of global planted forest area and their great impact on human life. It is reported in Forest Resource Assessment 2010 that the current area of global planted forests is about 264 million ha, representing only 7% of the total forest area but able to meet the two thirds of the global demand for logs. Planted forests can not only provide timber, fiber, fuel and non-wood forest products, but also contribute to carbon sequestration, restoration of degraded land, landscape rehabilitation and watershed protection. Besides, planted forests can also provide the recreation and amusement for people. In such sense, in the coming decades, planted forests, driven by various factors such as social- economic conditions, market, consumers' demand and new technologies, will have good opportunities for development, and will also increase their contribution to achieving the series of development objectives worldwide. In the meanwhile, the development of planted forests is also constrained by the factors like policies, laws, regulations, technologies and funds, and therefore faced with the challenges in terms of eco- environment preservation, economic development and protection of community interests. 17Effect of Nanocomposites Coatings on Exterior Performance of Bamboo during Aging显示文摘Bamboo deterioration caused by light becomes a significant problem as application of bamboo extends from indoor to outdoor.The color and roughness of bamboo are two important exterior performances.This study focused on UV resistant nano composites coatings for exterior use and what aimed to find a formulation which could enhance the durability of bamboo.Four kinds of film-forming materials and four kinds of nano particles were used to improve bamboo exterior performance.The color and roughness of nano composites coatings were measured during accelerated weathering.Artificial aging time was 174 h at the temperature of 50 ℃.The experiment showed nanocomposites coatings had significant improvement in UV-shielding and nearly all the samples presented a darkening tendency in ΔL* and increasing tendency in Δa*,ΔE* and ΔRa.The orthogonal experiment obtained the least change in color and Ra which could be achieved with nano composites coating made by melamine resin and TiO2 when a* was considered as an important index.Film-forming material was the only factor which had significant influence on color and roughness when a* was not considered as important index,then melamine resin was the best choice.LI Neng CHEN Yuhe BAO Yongjie ZOU Yijia CAI Hanjiang 2012Chinese Forestry Science and Technology2012,11,Z1:4
18State and Potential of Forest Carbon Market in China显示文摘China has been making efforts to improve climate changes which have drawn international attentions since China formally signed UN Climate Change Framework in 1992 and ratified Kyoto Protocol in August 2002. The area of China’s forest plantation ranks the first at present so global close attention is paid to forest carbon market in China. The result showed that China shall establish her own forest certification scheme, with the focus on the improvement of forest sustainable management concept through forest certification, the promotion of forest certification through the leadership of large companies and the strengthening of capacity building. 20Review on Agroforestry Systems in China显示文摘China is one of the countries with the lowest forest cover on the earth. Thereby Chinese peoplehave been facing the dilemma of much more wood demand and more food consumption for a long time dueto the population growth. Agroforestry as an integrated land-use system is an obvious means of fulfillingmultiple objectives. The advantages and implications of agroforestry are numerous. Its activities have hada long history in China since ancestry residents began to settle and live on cultivated farming. Agroforestrysystems can conveniently be grouped into 5 categories: agroforestry with crops dominating, with forestdominating, with pasture-husbandry dominating, with aquiculture dominating and agroforestry withhomestead and “four-side” management (the productive use of road-sides, river-sides, village-sides andfield sides). Modern agroforestry is based on a biological production principle, from which economicgrowth can be achieved through the processing industry and the marketing system. Thereby a whole ruraleconomy which combines agriculture, industry and trade as a trinity is formed, which can increase outputsper unit area of land, augment general biomass, create employment opportunities, raise total incomes,improve living standard, and promote rural development in these areas.ZHANG Jianfeng SUN Qixiang 2005Chinese Forestry Science and Technology2005,4,3:4
