Coding metamaterials, digital metamaterials and programmable metamaterials显示文摘Metamaterials are artificial structures that are usually described by effective medium parameters on the macroscopic scale, and these metamaterials are referred to as‘analog metamaterials’.Here,we propose‘digital metamaterials’through two steps.First,we present‘coding metamaterials’that are composed of only two types of unit cells, with 0 and p phase responses, which we name‘0’and‘1’elements,respectively.By coding‘0’and‘1’elements with controlled sequences(i.e.,1-bit coding),we can manipulate electromagnetic(EM)waves and realize different functionalities. The concept of coding metamaterials can be extended from 1-bit coding to 2-bit coding or higher. In 2-bit coding, four types of unit cells, with phase responses of 0,p/2,p,and 3p/2,are required to mimic the‘00’,‘01’,‘10’and‘11’elements,respectively.The 2-bit coding has greater freedom than 1-bit coding for controlling EM waves.Second,we propose a unique metamaterial particle that has either a‘0’or‘1’response controlled by a biased diode.Based on this particle,we present‘digital metamaterials’with unit cells that possess either a‘0’or‘1’state.Using a field-programmable gate array,we realize digital control over the digital metamaterial.By programming different coding sequences,a single digital metamaterial has the ability to manipulate EM waves in different manners, thereby realizing‘programmable metamaterials’.The above concepts and physical phenomena are confirmed through numerical simulations and experiments using metasurfaces. | Tie Jun Cui Mei Qing Qi Xiang Wan Jie Zhao Qiang Cheng | 2014 | Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1: | 130
水面无人船的发展与使命(英文)显示文摘The navy and other Department of Defense organizations are increasingly interested in the use of unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) for a variety of missions and applications. The term USV refers to any vehicle that operates on the surface of the water without a crew. USVs have the potential, and in some cases the demonstrated ability, to reduce risk to manned forces, provide the necessary force multiplication to accomplish military missions, perform tasks which manned vehicles cannot, and do so in a way that is affordable for the navy. A survey of USV activities worldwide as well as the general technical challenges of USVs was presented below. A general description of USVs was provided along with their typical applications. The technical challenges of developing a USV include its intelligence level, control, high stability, and developmental cost reduction. Through the joint efforts of researchers around the world, it is believed that the development of USVs will enter a new phase in the near future, as USVs could soon be applied widely both in military and civilian service. | 严汝建 庞硕 孙寒冰 庞永杰 | 2010 | Journal of Marine Science and Application2010,9,4: | 69

Optical vortices 30 years on:OAM manipulation from topological charge to multiple singularities显示文摘Thirty years ago,Coullet et al.proposed that a special optical field exists in laser cavities bearing some analogy with the superfluid vortex.Since then, optical vortices have been widely studied, inspired by the hydrodynamics sharing similar mathematics.Akin to a fluid vortex with a central flow singularity,an optical vortex beam has a phase singularity with a certain topological charge, giving rise to a hollow intensity distribution.Such a beam with helical phase fronts and orbital angular momentum reveals a subtle connection between macroscopic physical optics and microscopic quantum optics. These amazing properties provide a new understanding of a wide range of optical and physical phenomena, including twisting photons, spin–orbital interactions,Bose-Einstein condensates, etc.,while the associated technologies for manipulating optical vortices have become increasingly tunable and flexible.Hitherto, owing to these salient properties and optical manipulation technologies, tunable vortex beams have engendered tremendous advanced applications such as optical tweezers,high-order quantum entanglement, and nonlinear optics. This article reviews the recent progress in tunable vortex technologies along with their advanced applications. | Yijie Shen Xuejiao Wang Zhenwei Xie Changjun Min Xing Fu Qiang Liu Mali Gong Xiaocong Yuan | 2019 | Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1: | 77

Massive individual orbital angular momentum channels for multiplexing enabled by Dammann gratings显示文摘Data transmission rates in optical communication systems are approaching the limits of conventional multiplexing methods.Orbital angular momentum(OAM)in optical vortex beams offers a new degree of freedom and the potential to increase the capacity of free-space optical communication systems, with OAM beams acting as information carriers for OAM division multiplexing(OAM-DM).We demonstrate independent collinear OAM channel generation, transmission and simultaneous detection using Dammann optical vortex gratings(DOVGs).We achieve 80/160 Tbit s^(-1) capacity with uniform power distributions along all channels, with 1600 individually modulated quadrature phase-shift keying(QPSK)/16-QAM data channels multiplexed by 10 OAM states,80 wavelengths and two polarizations.DOVG-enabled OAM multiplexing technology removes the bottleneck of massive OAM state parallel detection and offers an opportunity to raise optical communication systems capacity to Pbit s^(-1) level. | Ting Lei Meng Zhang Yuru Li Ping Jia Gordon Ning Liu Xiaogeng Xu Zhaohui Li Changjun Min Jiao Lin Changyuan Yu Hanben Niu Xiaocong Yuan | 2015 | Light(Science & Applications)2015,4,1: | 47
Generating optical orbital angular momentum at visible wavelengths using a plasmonic metasurface显示文摘Light beams with a helical phase-front possess orbital angular momentum along their direction of propagation in addition to the spin angular momentum that describes their polarisation.Until recently,it was thought that these two‘rotational’motions of light were largely independent and could not be coupled during light–matter interactions. However,it is now known that interactions with carefully designed complex media can result in spin-to-orbit coupling, where a change of the spin angular momentum will modify the orbital angular momentum and vice versa. In this work,we propose and demonstrate that the birefringence of plasmonic nanostructures can be wielded to transform circularly polarised light into light carrying orbital angular momentum.A device operating at visible wavelengths is designed from a space-variant array of subwavelength plasmonic nano-antennas.Experiment confirms that circularly polarised light transmitted through the device is imbued with orbital angular momentum of 62'(with conversion efficiency of at least 1%).This technology paves the way towards ultrathin orbital angular momentum generators that could be integrated into applications for spectroscopy, nanoscale sensing and classical or quantum communications using integrated photonic devices. | Ebrahim Karimi Sebastian A Schulz Israel De Leon Hammam Qassim Jeremy Upham Robert W Boyd | 2014 | Light(Science & Applications)2014,3,1: | 39
Ultrafast laser processing of materials: from science to industry显示文摘Processing of materials by ultrashort laser pulses has evolved significantly over the last decade and is starting to reveal its scientific, technological and industrial potential. In ultrafast laser manufacturing, optical energy of tightly focused femtosecond or picosecond laser pulses can be delivered to precisely defined positions in the bulk of materials via two-/multi-photon excitation on a timescale much faster than thermal energy exchange between photoexcited electrons and lattice ions.Control of photoionization and thermal processes with the highest precision, inducing local photomodification in sub-100-nm-sized regions has been achieved.State-of-the-art ultrashort laser processing techniques exploit high 0.1–1μm spatial resolution and almost unrestricted three-dimensional structuring capability.Adjustable pulse duration, spatiotemporal chirp, phase front tilt and polarization allow control of photomodification via uniquely wide parameter space.Mature opto-electrical/mechanical technologies have enabled laser processing speeds approaching meters-per-second,leading to a fast lab-to-fab transfer. The key aspects and latest achievements are reviewed with an emphasis on the fundamental relation between spatial resolution and total fabrication throughput.Emerging biomedical applications implementing micrometer feature precision over centimeter-scale scaffolds and photonic wire bonding in telecommunications are highlighted. | Mangirdas Malinauskas Albertas Žukauskas Satoshi Hasegawa Yoshio Hayasaki Vygantas Mizeikis Ričardas Buividas Saulius Juodkazis | 2016 | Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1: | 37
Anisotropic coding metamaterials and their powerful manipulation of differently polarized terahertz waves显示文摘Metamaterials based on effective media can be used to produce a number of unusual physical properties(for example, negative refraction and invisibility cloaking)because they can be tailored with effective medium parameters that do not occur in nature.Recently, the use of coding metamaterials has been suggested for the control of electromagnetic waves through the design of coding sequences using digital elements‘0’and‘1,'which possess opposite phase responses. Here we propose the concept of an anisotropic coding metamaterial in which the coding behaviors in different directions are dependent on the polarization status of the electromagnetic waves. We experimentally demonstrate an ultrathin and flexible polarization-controlled anisotropic coding metasurface that functions in the terahertz regime using specially designed coding elements.By encoding the elements with elaborately designed coding sequences(both 1-bit and 2-bit sequences),the x-and y-polarized waves can be anomalously reflected or independently diffused in three dimensions. The simulated far-field scattering patterns and near-field distributions are presented to illustrate the dual-functional performance of the encoded metasurface, and the results are consistent with the measured results. We further demonstrate the ability of the anisotropic coding metasurfaces to generate a beam splitter and realize simultaneous anomalous reflections and polarization conversions, thus providing powerful control of differently polarized electromagnetic waves. The proposed method enables versatile beam behaviors under orthogonal polarizations using a single metasurface and has the potential for use in the development of interesting terahertz devices. | Shuo Liu Tie Jun Cui Quan Xu Di Bao Liangliang Du Xiang Wan Wen Xuan Tang Chunmei Ouyang Xiao Yang Zhou Hao Yuan Hui Feng Ma Wei Xiang Jiang Jiaguang Han Weili Zhang Qiang Cheng | 2016 | Light(Science & Applications)2016,5,1: | 36

Helicity dependent directional surface plasmon polariton excitation using a metasurface with interfacial phase discontinuity显示文摘Surface plasmon polaritons(SPPs)have been widely exploited in various scientific communities, ranging from physics, chemistry to biology, due to the strong confinement of light to the metal surface. For many applications,it is important that the free space photon can be coupled to SPPs in a controllable manner. In this Letter,we apply the concept of interfacial phase discontinuity for circularly polarizations on a metasurface to the design of a novel type of polarization-dependent SPP unidirectional excitation at normal incidence.Selective unidirectional excitation of SPPs along opposite directions is experimentally demonstrated at optical frequencies by simply switching the helicity of the incident light. This approach,in conjunction with dynamic polarization modulation techniques, opens gateway towards integrated plasmonic circuits with electrically reconfigurable functionalities. | Lingling Huang Xianzhong Chen Benfeng Bai Qiaofeng Tan Guofan Jin Thomas Zentgraf Shuang Zhang | 2013 | Light(Science & Applications)2013,2,1: | 31
Broadband diffusion of terahertz waves by multi-bit coding metasurfaces显示文摘The terahertz region is a special region of the electromagnetic spectrum that incorporates the advantages of both microwaves and infrared light waves. In the past decade, metamaterials with effective medium parameters or gradient phases have been studied to control terahertz waves and realize functional devices. Here,we present a new approach to manipulate terahertz waves by using coding metasurfaces that are composed of digital coding elements. We propose a general coding unit based on a Minkowski closed-loop particle that is capable of generating 1-bit coding(with two phase states of 0 and 180°),2-bit coding(with four phase states of 0,90°,180°,and 270°),and multi-bit coding elements in the terahertz frequencies by using different geometric scales. We show that multi-bit coding metasurfaces have strong abilities to control terahertz waves by designing-specific coding sequences. As an application,we demonstrate a new scattering strategy of terahertz waves—broadband and wide-angle diffusion—using a 2-bit coding metasurface with a special coding design and verify it by both numerical simulations and experiments. The presented method opens a new route to reducing the scattering of terahertz waves. | Li-Hua Gao Qiang Cheng Jing Yang Shao-Jie Ma Jie Zhao Shuo Liu Hai-Bing Chen Qiong He Wei-Xiang Jiang Hui-Feng Ma Qi-Ye Wen Lan-Ju Liang Biao-Bing Jin Wei-Wei Liu Lei Zhou Jian-Quan Yao Pei-Heng Wu Tie-Jun Cui | 2015 | Light(Science & Applications)2015,4,1: | 31

Independent control of harmonic amplitudes and phases via a time-domain digital coding metasurface显示文摘Harmonic manipulations are important for applications such as wireless communications, radar detection and biological monitoring.A general approach to tailor the harmonics involves the use of additional amplifiers and phase shifters for the precise control of harmonic amplitudes and phases after the mixing process;however, this approach leads to issues of high cost and system integration.Metasurfaces composed of a periodic array of subwavelength resonators provide additional degrees of freedom to realize customized responses to incident light and highlight the possibility for nonlinear control by taking advantage of time-domain properties. Here,we designed and experimentally characterized a reflective time-domain digital coding metasurface, with independent control of the harmonic amplitude and phase. As the reflection coefficient is dynamically modulated in a predefined way,a large conversion rate is observed from the carrier signal to the harmonic components, with magnitudes and phases that can be accurately and separately engineered. In addition,by encoding the reflection phases of the meta-atoms,beam scanning for multiple harmonics can be implemented via different digital coding sequences, thus removing the need for intricate phase-shift networks. This work paves the way for efficient harmonic control for applications in communications, radar, and related areas. | Jun Yan Dai Jie Zhao Qiang Cheng Tie Jun Cui | 2018 | Light(Science & Applications)2018,7,1: | 29
A Parallel Algorithm for Adaptive Local Refinement of Tetrahedral Meshes Using Bisection显示文摘Local mesh refinement is one of the key steps in the implementations of adaptive finite element methods. This paper presents a parallel algorithm for distributed memory parallel computers for adaptive local refinement of tetrahedral meshes using bisection. This algorithm is used in PHG,Parallel Hierarchical Grid (http://gffzz8065c2988e934515hokx9wc9cvcu06u59.ffgz.tsg.suse.edu.cn/phg/),a toolbox under active development for parallel adaptive finite element solutions of partial differential equations. The algorithm proposed is characterized by allowing simultaneous refinement of submeshes to arbitrary levels before synchronization between submeshes and without the need of a central coordinator process for managing new vertices.Using the concept of canonical refinement, a simple proof of the independence of the resulting mesh on the mesh partitioning is given, which is useful in better understanding the behaviour of the bisectioning refinement procedure. | Lin-Bo Zhang | 2009 | Numerical Mathematics(Theory,Methods and Applications)2009,2,1: | 27
Passive technologies for future large-scale photonic integrated circuits on silicon: polarization handling, light non-reciprocity and loss reduction显示文摘Silicon-based large-scale photonic integrated circuits are becoming important, due to the need for higher complexity and lower cost for optical transmitters, receivers and optical buffers. In this paper, passive technologies for large-scale photonic integrated circuits are described, including polarization handling, light non-reciprocity and loss reduction. The design rule for polarization beam splitters based on asymmetrical directional couplers is summarized and several novel designs for ultra-short polarization beam splitters are reviewed.A novel concept for realizing a polarization splitter–rotator is presented with a very simple fabrication process.Realization of silicon-based light non-reciprocity devices(e.g.,optical isolator),which is very important for transmitters to avoid sensitivity to reflections,is also demonstrated with the help of magneto-optical material by the bonding technology.Low-loss waveguides are another important technology for large-scale photonic integrated circuits.Ultra-low loss optical waveguides are achieved by designing a Si3N4 core with a very high aspect ratio. The loss is reduced further to,0.1 dB m21 with an improved fabrication process incorporating a high-quality thermal oxide upper cladding by means of wafer bonding. With the developed ultra-low loss Si3N4 optical waveguides, some devices are also demonstrated, including ultra-high-Q ring resonators,low-loss arrayed-waveguide grating(de)multiplexers, and high-extinction-ratio polarizers. | Daoxin Dai Jared Bauters John E Bowers | 2012 | Light(Science & Applications)2012,1,1: | 28
Three-dimensional chiral microstructures fabricated by structured optical vortices in isotropic material显示文摘Optical vortices,a type of structured beam with helical phase wavefronts and‘doughnut’-shaped intensity distributions, have been used to fabricate chiral structures in metals and spiral patterns in anisotropic polarization-dependent azobenzene polymers. However,in isotropic polymers, the fabricated microstructures are typically confined to non-chiral cylindrical geometry due to the two-dimensional‘doughnut’-shaped intensity profile of the optical vortices. Here we develop a powerful strategy to realize chiral microstructures in isotropic material by coaxial interference of a vortex beam and a plane wave, which produces threedimensional(3D)spiral optical fields. These coaxial interference beams are generated by designing contrivable holograms consisting of an azimuthal phase and an equiphase loaded on a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. In isotropic polymers,3D chiral microstructures are achieved under illumination using coaxial interference femtosecond laser beams with their chirality controlled by the topological charge. Our further investigation reveals that the spiral lobes and chirality are caused by interfering patterns and helical phase wavefronts, respectively. This technique is simple, stable and easy to perform, and it offers broad applications in optical tweezers, optical communications and fast metamaterial fabrication. | Jincheng Ni Chaowei Wang Chenchu Zhang Yanlei Hu Liang Yang Zhaoxin Lao Bing Xu Jiawen Li Dong Wu Jiaru Chu | 2017 | Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1: | 28
Dielectric metasurfaces for complete and independent control of the optical amplitude and phase显示文摘Metasurfaces are optically thin metamaterials that promise complete control of the wavefront of light but are primarily used to control only the phase of light. Here,we present an approach, simple in concept and in practice, that uses meta-atoms with a varying degree of form birefringence and rotation angles to create high-efficiency dielectric metasurfaces that control both the optical amplitude and phase at one or two frequencies. This opens up applications in computer-generated holography, allowing faithful reproduction of both the phase and amplitude of a target holographic scene without the iterative algorithms required in phase-only holography. We demonstrate all-dielectric metasurface holograms with independent and complete control of the amplitude and phase at up to two optical frequencies simultaneously to generate two-and three-dimensional holographic objects. We show that phaseamplitude metasurfaces enable a few features not attainable in phase-only holography;these include creating artifactfree two-dimensional holographic images, encoding phase and amplitude profiles separately at the object plane, encoding intensity profiles at the metasurface and object planes separately, and controlling the surface textures of three-dimensional holographic objects. | Adam C.Overvig Sajan Shrestha Stephanie C.Malek Ming Lu Aaron Stein Changxi Zheng Nanfang Yu | 2019 | Light(Science & Applications)2019,8,1: | 27
Augmented reality and virtual reality displays:emerging technologies and future perspectives显示文摘With rapid advances in high-speed communication and computation, augmented reality(AR)and virtual reality(VR)are emerging as next-generation display platforms for deeper human-digital interactions.Nonetheless,to simultaneously match the exceptional performance of human vision and keep the near-eye display module compact and lightweight imposes unprecedented challenges on optical engineering.Fortunately, recent progress in holographic optical elements(HOEs)and lithography-enabled devices provide innovative ways to tackle these obstacles in AR and VR that are otherwise difficult with traditional optics. In this review,we begin with introducing the basic structures of AR and VR headsets, and then describing the operation principles of various HOEs and lithography-enabled devices.Their properties are analyzed in detail, including strong selectivity on wavelength and incident angle, and multiplexing ability of volume HOEs,polarization dependency and active switching of liquid crystal HOEs,device fabrication, and properties of micro-LEDs(light-emitting diodes),and large design freedoms of metasurfaces.Afterwards,we discuss how these devices help enhance the AR and VR performance, with detailed description and analysis of some state-of-the-art architectures. Finally,we cast a perspective on potential developments and research directions of these photonic devices for future AR and VR displays. | Jianghao Xiong En-Lin Hsiang Ziqian He Tao Zhan Shin-Tson Wu | 2021 | Light(Science & Applications)2021,10,11: | 27
